I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 and after the upgrade
- the system boots,
- the grub menu appears,
- the splash screen comes up and then
- I have a black screen and that's it!
I saw, at the end of the installation process, that the driver for the nVidia video card was removed.
I can't seem to get Ubuntu to run on my old Dell Dimension 2300. It boots to a purple screen then it goes to a black screen with a load of writing nothing else happens after this screen. [URL] Could someone advise how I can get it to work?

Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit deployed to USB stick using Universal USB Installer 1.8.2.2.Searching around seems the problem is the way Nvidia graphics card is handled. I found a recommendation to set 'nosetmode' option, but found no easy way to do this on the current USB boot menu.Currently tried pressing TAB on the boot menu option and adding '--nosetmode' to command line, but result is the same.Does anyone have any suggestion about what I should try next?
I downloaded and burned Ubuntu from ubuntu.com (64bit version) while in windows 7 64 i popped the install disc in, and it went into a setup in which it installed it asked to reboot, and I allowed. upon reboot boot I could choose either Windows or Ubuntu, so I picked ubuntu and off it went. It started to boot into the (Ubuntu) OS, it shows the little ubuntu thing, then the display goes black, like there is no signal to the monitor. The PC still runs, and reconizes when I plug in an iPhone or something, there is just a black screen though. I would like to know how to go about fixing this?

I have 4 HD. Primary drive has Windows Vista, Secondary no OS installed. Sata1 HD Ubuntu 10.04, Sata2 Windows 7. Prior to installing windows 7 all was perfect but once I did it, grub got all screwed up. The only way I can boot into grub is if I manually select my Sata1 which has Ubuntu on it and only then it allows me to select Linux or Windows OS. How can I change that so it can boot up normally as before? I'm assuming that grub was installed in the primary drive which has vista on it, but once I installed windows 7 it got deleted and when I tried reinstalling Ubuntu, the grub was not installed in the primary drive.
Well, it's a long story, but to make it short I foolishly upgraded my wife's netbook many months ago to 10.04, not knowing that the new xserver version will cause me lots of grief with the gma500 driver. Back then, I ran an update that completely borked my system, and my only fix was to do another clean install. Since the, I just did not do any more upgrades.
So, months have gone by, and the netbook has not had any upgrades. I've read some instructions in the gma500 megathread on how to safely upgrade the system. To start, I had to purge the psb-kernel-source, do upgrades, and reinstall the psb-kernel-source and the other poulsbo drivers. I did all that, and now it boots to a black screen. I can't ctrl-alt-f1 to a terminal session either.
I really don't want to do another clean install. With the crappy broadcom driver as well, it's a real chore. And because of the crappy broadcom driver, I can't figure any way to get a wifi connection from the command line either.
After my upgrade the bootup seems to take a long time.I am dual booting with XP.From the boot menu when I select Ubuntu it takes 35 seconds before I get the login screen.Is this normal?Also, other apps seem to be running slow. Running Win 7 under VMWare Workstation 7.1.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI just set up a ubuntu 11.04 Desktop 32-bit installation on an older pc that I found in the basement. It was running xp before and had 2 hard drives so I left the xp install alone and installed ubuntu on the second hard drive. It all booted up and worked fine until I rebooted it for the 2nd or 3rd time, now after I select ubuntu from grub it just loads to a black screen. Even in recovery mode if flashes the text across the screen and then also goes to a black screen. Now what seemed really wierd is that the same thing occurs if I try to boot from the usb drive i used to install it the first time, but win xp boots fine.

Everything is great and all but today when I booted into Ubuntu everything was going well--the splash screen appeared and the dots were doing their thing and all--but then there was just a blank screen. Some people have had this problem after a fresh install of Lucid, but its been working for a while so I don't get why it isn't working... I didn't do anything to the system except run some updates before I turned off the computer.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my machine to F15. I was asked to reboot. From that point on, the system will not boot. I get to the blue screen with the 'egg', about 1/3 of the 'egg' turns white, then the screen goes black. No cursor, nothing.
I hit shift to get the Grub menu, tried booting my old kernel. Same result.
I tried burning a F15 live cd and booting that, but I get a desktop background with no mouse, no docks. It doesn't seem to respond to anything I do. I can boot it in the "basic graphics" mode, or whatever you call it, but I would rather not overwrite my entire hard drive with a fresh install.
I have seen references to some kind of recovery mode provided on the live cd that might repair my install without wiping my data, but I can't find it anywhere.

Intel NM10 chipset
I am getting a black screen on the latest kernel upgrade 2.6.31-20. My computer completely boots up, but goes black after a minute or two. For now, I am booting up with the previous kernel.

Yesterday I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 via Update Manager. But when the upgrade procedure was finished and I made a reboot, I only come to the Ubuntu logo appears for a second, then the screen turns completely black and nothing happens. I then have to reboot via the power button.
But I can get it working with so far no problem, by booting to the third option in the boot options list. In the list there are several options, something like this code...
Now the question is; what does this mean when there are several alternatives with the same name? What is the difference between alternative 1 and 3, other than 3 is working and 1 is not? Is there any problem running alternative 3 instead of 1, and if so how do I get it to boot from alternative 3 as standard?
If this is not the right way to do it, how can I figure out what the error is on alternative 1?
Recovery mode doesn't work, same problem. Taking the older kernel gives no problem. I have no 3rd party graphics driver installed. 10.04 was a fresh install on this machine. I cannot get a commandline, the screen just shuts down because of a lack of input.

I) Just started Computer normally, using new Kernel and 11.04 then the screen became black as before. Waited until Harddisk (Light) wouldn't work too much and boot seemed to be over.
II) IN BLIND FLIGHT (without seeing anything, since screen is black):
1) opened the Terminal using Ctrl+Alt+F2
2) typed my "Username" (enter)
3) typed my "Password" (enter)
4) typed "sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=30" (enter)
5) typed my "Password" (enter)
III) Now it is not really satisfactory to do this over and over again each time restarting my computer. Is there any way to use a batch or use the grub to setpci ? I'd like to install 11.04 with an USB Stick on a similar computer - how do I setpci there?
I am booting XP and Opensuse 11.4 all was ok until I changed my old monitor for a widescreen monitor, Xp works ok but when I select Opensuse from the menu it just boots to a black screen.

So, I went into the grub edit screen, and I tried every variation of the nomodeset fix I could find. So far, nothing has worked. So I decided to see if the problem persists or not when I completely upgrade my ubuntu to the latest version. So I downloaded the latest ubuntu iso from the site, burned it, and booted from CD and I see several selections to choose from the menu list. The second one was "Install Ubuntu". What I'm worried about is I don't know whether selecting 'Install Ubuntu' will erase all my previous data, or there will be an option to upgrade Ubuntu without erasing all the data. Is it safe to install from the live disk? Will my data be safe? Is there any way to upgrade my Ubuntu on the HD to the latest Ubuntu from a live disk?

Everything was working fine until one day when I went to switch it on and it shows up everything its suppose to, the blue logo etc but then it loads upto a black screen with the mouse poitner. View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running ubuntu 10.4, windows 7, and I had ubuntu 10.10 on a single hard drive. I upgrade the 10.10 system to 11.4 and now my grub menu which is on the 10.4 system shows two windows and two 11.4 installations.
How can I clean this up? Also I have tried to start with the grub 1.99 on the 11.4 system and all I get is a black screen at startup. I am happy with grub on 10.4 except for the extra lines.

Don't know if this is a coincidence, but the other day we had a power cut and my laptop went off. When I tried to reboot it got to the ubuntu start up screen, but when it tries to get to the "desk top" screen it all goes blue and black flashes. I have XP and Vista on the same machine and these both start up ok
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am been trying to install Ubuntu 10.04.1 x86 for 4 days now.I have installed and reinstalled over two dozen times.I have tried 3 different live cds. I have tried usb install with both the x86 and with the x86 alternate cd.
I can boot the live cd just fine. However when I try to install, it goes though the entire process and seems to have worked. It then boots to a black screen.I have searched and searched without avail for a solution to this problem.I forget everything I have tried or I would list it all here.I should mention that I am a linux noob.
I'm under Kubuntu 10.04 and I upgraded kde from 4.4 to 4.5. via apt-get. After KDM login, I got a black screen with the mouse cursor visible and active.

Yesterday I attempt to use update-manager to do a distribution update. all was going good. i went to the kitchen to get a coffee and returned to a black screen with no cursor. the install couldnot have finished as it was still downloading updates i believe.
on reboot gnome did not respond so my last resort was to use kde for the time being. by running update-manager through kde I successfully updated to ubuntu 10.10. After completion of the update i restarted and gnome still had a non respinsive black screen on login.
Kde is still working fine.
Or at least how can I completely reinstall gnome.
