View 1 RepliesI get the "Could not download all repository indexes" error whenever I check for updates in update manager. In the error window it says this:
"Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found. Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
I'm not sure what this repository is for, so I can remove it, but I just want to make sure this is not the "main" repository that I get updates from. Will I still keep getting my system updates if I remove it?

View 1 Replies View RelatedUsing the ubuntu live cd 9.10 I get weird error messages when shutting down the system, sometimes it is this one:
device removed: /freedesktop/Hal/devices/net_80_00_60_0f_e8_00
Other times it is bunch of errors saying something like:
i/o error/end request/dev/sector ****, with all different sector numbers..
These happens even when I have not installed anything, not using any flash drives etc...
Every time I boot up FC13 I get a boot message which is showing a failed task. The line is as follows:

Everything appears to be running fine on my system. This message is more nuisance that a functionality message. But I could be wrong.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter I installed the "GNOME Software Development" group with yum, I couldn,t log into the Gnome desktop. An error message says "Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. log out and try again", and it repeated every time I tried to log in. I created a file "gnome-shell.desktop" in the ~/.config/autostart directory, the error message no longer appears, but I get only a wallpaper which means no top bar or else. When i shutdown my SuSE 11.2 box with all current updates i have started to notice an error message.Something about failed to unmount, trying remount as read only or something like that.The trouble is its almost the very last message that appears and its not on the screen long enough to read properly.Somewhere is there a logfile that i can recover this error message from so that i can make some sort of an attempt to resolve the issue, post the whole message here in more detail?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed ubuntu 10.04 although everything works fine I have a problem related to sound, When I click Preferences/Sound I get the message "waiting for sound system to respond" and actually it does not respond at all. Although, I have downloaded, compiled and installed linux drivers from realtek website it did not fix the problem. internet which is simply deleting .pulse folder and restarting it didnt work either.At the moment I am using terminal alsamixer for controlling sound level but even the maximum attainable volume is too low.

The caption of the error is 'No root file system' and the message itself says 'No root file system is defined.Please correct this from the partitioning menu.' I enclose a screenshot of this. I had also problems with booting Ubuntu and Windows after installing Ubuntu to an external hard disk so I probably have to also create a new boot menu (may be it is differently called, 'grub' possibly, I am not really sure).

I've checked all the permissions and they are all OK. I don't know why this is happening. they can create and move files and folders but can't copy files and folders.
my iwlist scan is normal. ethernet connection ok, wirless not working but does seem to receive. wifi radar lists my router ssid. View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed Squeeze on an older PC. Installation seemed to go fine. But when it booted up on the installed system for the first time, I could not login - username/password failure. I tried every possible typing error and CAP LOCK error I could have made - still nothing.
I brought up a console window and tried logging in as root - same problem.
I booted into single user mode and entered passwd command to set new root password - I got a SYSTEM ERROR message from the passwd command.
I booted to a Live CD, went to /etc/shadow and deleted the encrypted password. Rebooted on the hard drive, went to console window and logged in as root, with no password required. So far so good. I entered passwd command to set new password and got the same SYSTEM ERROR message.
The machine seems fine when running on the Live CD, and the install seemed to go fine.
I can use Ubuntu from my flash drive, but I want to install it in a partition alongside windows. When I try to do this, I come to an 'allocate drive space' window, but whatever I do I get the error message: 'No root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu.' I just don't know what this means, or what to do next. I'm loathe to ditch windows, and I don't want to have to use a flashdrive all the time.

View 14 Replies View RelatedSome of my Ubuntu 9.10 (64 bit) applications close right after they pop up on the screen.I have this problem with the Software Center and the Update Manager. If I try to open the Software Center in the terminal it does the same but I get a message "Segmentation fault".

Basically, I am running diskwarrior on my mac now to try and fix invalid b-tree node size error. It is my boot drive and therefore cannot get onto the operating system. I have used live linux distros to try and get at the hdd that way, I have installed HFStools and testdisk and tried almost everything possible from within Linux itself to recover this HFS+ drive, but they were all a no go. My last resort was to try diskwarrior and it is rebuilding the drive now, well it has been for about 38 hours now but doesn't give any indication as to how long it will take.
I am pretty sure I am right in thinking data is never truly deleted until it is overwritten, is that right? Even if reformatted, would I be correct in thinking that if I were to format the drive and install linux on my machine, some of the data on the Drive would still be technically recoverable, even though the file system has changed? i.e. from HFS to EXT3. If this is technically possible what software would I need to try and recover files from a drive that has been formatted from HFS+ to EXT3?
It doesn't matter if I cant get it all, or might be more hassle than its worth, my girlfriend has another laptop to use for now and is in no hurry and I like getting to play around with Linux. The data is somewhat important but not enough so to go through the whole sending off the drive and paying hefty fees, it would be very nice to get back and I enjoy working in linux and learning more about software/hardware etc.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was in the process of installing something via apt-get. The laptop crashed halfway through, and now I cannot install anything new, do any updates/upgrades. I also cannot open Synaptic.When running apt-get in the terminal I get the following error:

I have updated Ubuntu all the way to 10.04, but the desktop environment still keeps its old looks. For example, the GNOME panel has the old, light grey colour rather than the new, dark grey. The new greyscale icons for battery and wireless aren't in place either.
What shall I do to bring it up to date either immediately or when 10.10 comes out?
I am runing debian-5 (lenny), the default kernel 2.6.26 was unable to start the x so i installed the new kernel linux-image-2.6.32-5-686_2.6.32-28_i386.deb, now x works, but there is problem building modules for the intel soft modem linux driver hsfmodem-7.60.00.00oem which is supplied in the modem cd by the intel company.
I installed these kernel packages for this purpose:
