Fedora :: Gnome 3 - Error Message - System Can't Recover
Aug 16, 2011
After I installed the "GNOME Software Development" group with yum, I couldn,t log into the Gnome desktop. An error message says "Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. log out and try again", and it repeated every time I tried to log in. I created a file "gnome-shell.desktop" in the ~/.config/autostart directory, the error message no longer appears, but I get only a wallpaper which means no top bar or else. The file's content is as follows:

For several weeks now I have been experiencing a problem with GNOME keyrings in Fedora 10 x86. Here is the thing: somehow out of the sudden GNOME started requesting the "Default Keyring" in order to connect to protected wireless networks it already knows. I don't remember having set one, maybe I did, and just in case I tried all my passwords to no avail.
On the other hand, XFCE, the desktop environment I use the most in that machine, has lost its ability to 'remember' passwords, which is a little painful in the long run.
I wouldn't want to just delete the keyrings because there are many stored already, and I want them back. Needless to say I have root access to the machine. Is it possible somehow as root (or as user) to fix that problem and restore both access to the stored passwords and the ability for Network Manager to remember them?
Just to be on the safe side I created another user and that one 'remembers' the stored passwords and is not prompted for the "Default Keyring".

I have upgraded my EeePC from 9.10 to 10.04 and got now a black screen after I can login. On the right upper corner, I find an error message:
Quote:
Install problem! The cnfiguration defaults for GNOME Power Manager have not been installed correctly. On the bottom bar I selected English / USA / GNOME for Language / Keyboard and Session Above is the best I ever could come, but most of the time I only can type in the password, and it stops there, without bottom bar (language/keyboard/session), but with the Error.

When i shutdown my SuSE 11.2 box with all current updates i have started to notice an error message.Something about failed to unmount, trying remount as read only or something like that. The trouble is its almost the very last message that appears and its not on the screen long enough to read properly.Somewhere is there a logfile that i can recover this error message from so that i can make some sort of an attempt to resolve the issue, post the whole message here in more detail?

Using the ubuntu live cd 9.10 I get weird error messages when shutting down the system, sometimes it is this one:
device removed: /freedesktop/Hal/devices/net_80_00_60_0f_e8_00
Other times it is bunch of errors saying something like:
i/o error/end request/dev/sector ****, with all different sector numbers..
These happens even when I have not installed anything, not using any flash drives etc...

which log file should i look at to debug problem with system sleep or anything to do with the system won't return back after goes to sleep.
Basically i got my system running from the night before. No problem until this evening around 5pm. (i realised the problem at 5pm) my monitor goes to sleep. My system power still on. It won't respond to monitor/mouse movement. i can't ssh in.
After reboot, check /var/log/messages. The only message there before reboot was at 9am. I am pretty sure everything worked fine around 2pm.

I am getting an error message at step 5 of 8 in the installation process. I am using Ubuntu LiveCD. The caption of the error is 'No root file system' and the message itself says 'No root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu.' I enclose a screenshot of this. I had also problems with booting Ubuntu and Windows after installing Ubuntu to an external hard disk so I probably have to also create a new boot menu (may be it is differently called, 'grub' possibly, I am not really sure).

There is a centralized FTP server which are accessed by clients to develop some web development project and to achieve this the clients are using ftp service. The problem is when they are trying to copy any files and directories they are getting the following error: "Message reported from the file system: FTP copy not supported, use move instead"
I've checked all the permissions and they are all OK. I don't know why this is happening. they can create and move files and folders but can't copy files and folders.

I just installed Squeeze on an older PC. Installation seemed to go fine. But when it booted up on the installed system for the first time, I could not login - username/password failure. I tried every possible typing error and CAP LOCK error I could have made - still nothing.
I brought up a console window and tried logging in as root - same problem.
I booted into single user mode and entered passwd command to set new root password - I got a SYSTEM ERROR message from the passwd command.
I booted to a Live CD, went to /etc/shadow and deleted the encrypted password. Rebooted on the hard drive, went to console window and logged in as root, with no password required. So far so good. I entered passwd command to set new password and got the same SYSTEM ERROR message.
The machine seems fine when running on the Live CD, and the install seemed to go fine.

I can use Ubuntu from my flash drive, but I want to install it in a partition alongside windows. When I try to do this, I come to an 'allocate drive space' window, but whatever I do I get the error message: 'No root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu.' I just don't know what this means, or what to do next. I'm loathe to ditch windows, and I don't want to have to use a flashdrive all the time.

I am running F10KDE, and I got fed up with K3b. I am dual-booting with WinVista. I want to upgrade to F11KDE, and keep Vista, too. So, I went to Vista and ran Roxio to make a bootable iso image of the F11 file. Success. Went to boot with the DVD I had just created as a supposed bootable DVD, and got a message: "Missing operating system."
