I have updated Ubuntu all the way to 10.04, but the desktop environment still keeps its old looks. For example, the GNOME panel has the old, light grey colour rather than the new, dark grey. The new greyscale icons for battery and wireless aren't in place either.
What shall I do to bring it up to date either immediately or when 10.10 comes out?
My desktop (the system AIDE runs on) is reguarly updated, and the file output can become enormous, making it hard, if not impossible, to track down out of place files. I have recently thought of uninstalling it since I can't tell what is out of place and what isn't, but before I do that I wanted to ask everyones opinion regarding what would be the best way to handle such a program on a desktop that has some core files changed reguarly. This sytem is running Gentoo, so updates affect a number of directories.

View 3 Replies View RelatedHey everyone I'm pretty new to ubuntu/linux so please bear with me . I recently installed 10.10 on my new htpc. The initial install went great, until I went to install the updated driver for my graphics card. What I did was I downloaded the driver off of nvidia. Then I did these steps:
1. ctrl-alt-f1
2. logged in
3. sudo services gdm stop
4. I then located the driver package that I downloaded and ran it, it seemed to install fine (except for an error about some install script? but it let me proceed)
5. sudo services gdm start
It went to the gdm/ubuntu desktop. However I then connected it via HDMI, and the resolution was way off (top bar was not even displayed on TV) and I tried many different settings but no luck in fixing it. Next after restarting it did not automatically boot to the gdm/desktop. Instead it stayed at the command line login (the ctrl-alt-f1 screen).

2. How to fix the resolution for HDMI from my gpu to my TV. (DVI works fine
I get the "Could not download all repository indexes" error whenever I check for updates in update manager. In the error window it says this:
"Failed to fetch [URL] 404 Not Found. Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
I'm not sure what this repository is for, so I can remove it, but I just want to make sure this is not the "main" repository that I get updates from. Will I still keep getting my system updates if I remove it?
I have a nVidia GeForce4 MX 4000 graphics card. How do I install the updated nVidia drivers so I can use the desktop effects in KDE?

After a reboot, I no longer have desktop icons and I'm seeing the default Fedora wallpaper. Also, if I right-click on the desktop, I get a standard openbox menu instead of the LXDE one.
I would like to get my old desktop back.
I have a RHEL 3 server that I just tried to install updates on, but up2date kicked back the following message and no updates. Is redhat not offering updates for version 3 anymore?

It boots up into kde 4.3.5 and then right when its just finishing it freezes everytime and I hear that last tone of the bootup sound ring continually until I force a shutdown. Anyone else have this issue with the update?
I am unable to get a Brother MFC-5460CN printer to print on a fully updated F12 system. Everything looks normal in Administration | Printing. All fields match the format shown on the Brother site. The printer status is updating correctly so there is communication to the printer. But jobs just queue and eventually show as printed but nothing is actually printed. There are no other printers. I followed the instructions on the Brother Linux drivers page and all the rpms loaded without error. But the log is showing some type of key problem.
I am using the default CVS available in Fedora 9. I initiated the CVS server by

To check-in and check-out the following exports commands are used

I shall explain problem by taking an example. A project was checked in long before (for example the checkin date is 25 Feb 2010). And today (i.e. 21 June 2011) I checked out the project from the repository. After checkout, the date of the project in the repository is changed from 25 Feb 2010 to 21 June 2011. This date is set to all the subfolders in that project. But the files in the project retains the checking date i.e. 25 Feb 2010. Why the check-in dates are getting updated/changed to the system time after doing check-out.

I have the new gnome ubuntu desktop installed on virtualbox but because that I only have 512mb of ram I have to share the amount of ram they use. That makes ubuntu very slow and I cant play video's on ubuntu because of the lack of video memory again, so is there anyway I could boot ubuntu from my desktop but instead of my windows vista and ubuntu running it will only be ubuntu running so It can get all the ram,video memory and that stuff? I need a answer quick because I have to be installing this program that takes up alot of ram on windows and I need to get to my work on open office on ubuntu!!!

View 4 Replies View RelatedThe screen will show a blinking cursor for a few seconds. The keyboard works and a signal is found for the speakers. Then the 'Ubuntu' loading screen will show but at this point the screen would freeze and the keyboard will cease to function. At this point I have to reboot from the on/off switch. It can take several attempts before the desktop will load, or if I'm lucky, it'll load up first time. I've had this problem since 9.10. I'm not quite sure why it's taken me this long to attempt to sort it out.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm looking to load Ubuntu 10.10 on my old school system. It's a PIII 600 with about 512MB of memory. I did a quick search and was quite surprised to see Ubuntu 10.10 requires 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM. And, apparently it only runs on x686 processors?
Is this true? Anyone running it on an older system? I ran Ubuntu on my dual-core laptop back in the 7.x and 8.x days and loved how it was self-maintaining and worked quite well! If anyone can suggest a good Linux distro for my older sys I'd appreciate it. I was going to look into slackware or Gentoo. Thanks for any info/tips.

I have netbook 10.10 installed on a Acer Aspire One on part of the disk and Windows 7 on another part. (There is no information worth saving in the 10.10 "home" file.)
Can I just install Ubuntu 10.04 as if I were doing it for the first time (as I did with netbook 10.10)? Will 10.04 simply replace 10.10?
Is the kernel and core system same in server and desktop 9.10? How do I update/upgrade server similar to what update manager does in desktop?

I removed apache2 and deleted /etc/apache2, but if I install apache2 it doesn't bring the files back.
