Software :: HDD Recovery (Invalid B-Tree Node Size Error)
Mar 25, 2010
Basically, I am running diskwarrior on my mac now to try and fix invalid b-tree node size error. It is my boot drive and therefore cannot get onto the operating system. I have used live linux distros to try and get at the hdd that way, I have installed HFStools and testdisk and tried almost everything possible from within Linux itself to recover this HFS+ drive, but they were all a no go. My last resort was to try diskwarrior and it is rebuilding the drive now, well it has been for about 38 hours now but doesn't give any indication as to how long it will take.
I am pretty sure I am right in thinking data is never truly deleted until it is overwritten, is that right? Even if reformatted, would I be correct in thinking that if I were to format the drive and install linux on my machine, some of the data on the Drive would still be technically recoverable, even though the file system has changed? i.e. from HFS to EXT3. If this is technically possible what software would I need to try and recover files from a drive that has been formatted from HFS+ to EXT3?
It doesn't matter if I cant get it all, or might be more hassle than its worth, my girlfriend has another laptop to use for now and is in no hurry and I like getting to play around with Linux. The data is somewhat important but not enough so to go through the whole sending off the drive and paying hefty fees, it would be very nice to get back and I enjoy working in linux and learning more about software/hardware etc.

I've set up DRBD on 2 machines, 1 of them is the master, another is the slave.
After each bootup, I need to run the following on the master machine:
Code:
drbdadm -- --overwrite-data-of-peer primary all
Do we need to specify which machine should be the primary node every time? Is there any method to make the machine "know" it's itself the primary node?

I have created a simple menu driven script for our Operations to take care of the basic monitoring and managing of our production application from the back-end. Now, the script when tested in UAT environment was fine, but when deployed to production it kind of behaved oddly.hen the Operator chooses an option from the menu he is given the output and at the end is prompted to return to the main menu by using ctrl+c. In production, this return does not occur for some strange reason and the program just sits there. The session becomes unresponsive after that and I'm forced to terminated it by closing the PuTTY.I tried enabling the debug mode too (set -x) and still was not able to find any useful hints/trails as to why.

I am familiar with windows 2008 cluster servers, and I just started testing with centos cluster. I am creating a simple 2-node cluster, for a simple ping test.
Node 1: 10.0.0.1
Node 2: 10.0.0.1
Virtual ip: 10.0.0.10
So far, I can ping a virtual ip, and manually relocate it between the nodes, but I didn't figure out, how to do this automatically. So this is my question: How can I setup the cluster, to it automatically failover the a service to another node case one node fails?

I have an 80GB Intel X25-M SSD drive installed on a Linux box running Debian 5.0. The file system on the SSD is ext4. I've had no problems with the drive, and have been using it for quite some time as both swap file storage as well as a place to store a few large database files which require random access.
However, I noticed this odd size readout from ls:
> ls -lh /ssd
total 34G
-rwx------ 1 root root 23G 2010-12-11 18:00 file1.dat
-rwx------ 1 root root 22G 2010-12-11 18:00 file2.dat
I changed the names of the files here for security reasons, but other than that this is exactly what ls has output. Obviously, the total size readout is incorrect.
Here is the corresponding output from df
> df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 74G 35G 36G 50% /ssd
Despite this incorrect readout, the drive seems to be working fine, and diagnostic utilities turned up nothing wrong with the drive. Is this some sort of known bug in ext4, or is it more likely there's something physically wrong with the drive?

I am having an issue with LVM on a 2 node cluster. We are using powerpath for external drives. We had a request to increase /apps filesystem which is EXT3.
On the first node we did:
pvcreate /dev/emcpowercx1 and /dev/emcpowercw2
Then....
vgextend apps_vg /dev/emcpowercw2 /dev/emcpowercx1
lvresize -L +60G /dev/apps_vg/apps_lv
resize2fs /dev/apps_vg/apps_lv
Everything went on well , we got the /apps increased. But on the second node when I do pvs.
I am getting following error:
WARNING: Duplicate VG name apps_vg: RnD1W1-peb1-JWay-MyMa-WJfb-41TE-cLwvzL (created here) takes precedence over ttOYXY-dY4h-l91r-bokz-1q5c-kn3k-MCvzUX
How can I proceed from here?

Getting the following errors on a new server:
They appear randomly while the system is idle and in use. The system configuration is as follows:
Running the latest Centos 5.5plus kernel (b/c we are using XFS)
The errors appear randomly several times a day. Tried removing some memory, but no combination sees to cause the error to stop.
I see this error posted in many places all over the web - some claim faulty Ram, faulty CPU, faulty mobo, and kernel bug.
Has anyone seen this error and been able to nail it down?

I'm building a 3-node cluster. I have created ocfs filesystems and mounted them on the first two nodes. But while mounting them on the third node , i'm getting this error for 8 of the total luns. all these 8 luns are of 1GB size.
I've unmounted these 8 luns from the other node and tried to mount in the third node ... and then it was working and again the error occurs in the second node. My observation was for some reason these particular luns are not allowing the third node.
mount.ocfs2: Invalid argument while mounting /dev/mapper/voting1 on /voting1. Check 'dmesg' for more information on this error.
dmesg output was :

Bottom Line: Dvd Drive died in my toshiba laptop and it was replaced (not before tech for some reason reformatted the Win7 partition... which was 100% un-needed, but thats beside the point now. I redid win7 (the tech installed vista) and am TRYING to "redo grub". Facts: The Slackware AND Ubuntu Partitions ARE STILL THERE and when i use SuperGrub Boot CD (which doesn't restore my grub by itself) to boot into slackware, i can see ALL THE CONTENT of both Linuxes still there including grub on ubuntu partition
(Tri-Boot: Ubuntu, Slackware, and WIn7) I had it working for two years or so, SO i know this "setup" works fine. I am A) Trying to do this as simply as possible. B) Trying to avoid the need to download a 800MB ISO (as seen for this issue on this forum) and trying not to have to reformat Ubuntu Partition (though I have the .Debs I have downloaded for it backed up ... all 1.7GB of them) I have /dev/sda1 as win7, /dev/sda2 as Slack and /dev/sda3 as Ubuntu (which contains Grub Legacy).. Every command I do seems to result in an error like "invalid command" or "invalid Execution format " (i think that second one is right) type errors. I compiled (awhile back) a few kernels for Slackware, but feel goofy that I cant figure what i this out (what i thought was going to be a "2 minute" fix)

I am running Red Hat with 2.6.18-194.8.1.el5PAE kernel version. I am trying to run encryptfs to encrypt a partition on my hard drive. One of the kernel modules necessary is the md5.ko. I noticed it wasn't loaded in when doing an lsmod. I tried running modprobe md5 and it fails to load:
[root@ ~]# /sbin/modprobe -v md5
insmod /lib/modules/2.6.18-194.8.1.el5PAE/kernel/crypto/md5.ko
FATAL: Error inserting md5 (/lib/modules/2.6.18-194.8.1.el5PAE/kernel/crypto/md5.ko): Invalid argument
I ran dmesg and grepped for md5, but I didn't see anything in there.

I have installed Windows 7 followed by Fedora 11. Everytime I install Fedora 11 with Win 7, the first to boot, I get BOOTMGR missing. Later I used "df -h" command to see the disk file usage fdisk -l" to see the info regarding Disk Partitions. Went into the /boot/grub/menu.lst and modified the order. I set the partition where I find the bootmgr.exe.mui, there was another file named "memtest.exe.mui in the same file.
I navigated to the above said through Fedora 11. Located inside the Win 7 installed directory /boot/en-US/
When I changed the menu.lst file, I get a new error Error 12: Invalid device requested when I tried to boot Win 7. Does that mean that Fedora 11 GRUB is not getting the bootmgr.exe.mui since its 2 levels inside the boot directory ??

After updating from 11.3 to 11.4 the networkmanager stopped working for me. When I hover over the KDE NetworkManager icon it says Error: Invalid state. I already tried removing /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state and restarting the network management (/etc/init.d/network restart). Also reinstalling the NetworkManager package.

I have just started using Valgrind, which really is great. Most of the reported errors look kinda weird, though I can't really understand what's going on here, for example:

sMsg=0x6974320 "blablabla"...) at MyCls.cpp:270

Basically, Valgrind reported the "Invalid Read" error at line 270 of file MyCls.cpp, which is simply a cout of the m_FilePtr variable, which is a member variable of the MyCls class. It's a FILE* variable I use to write repeatedly on a text file. The address reported (0x47a5ee8) is 296 bytes after the "this" pointer (0x47a5dc0),as Valgrind correctly tells me but I honestly don't understand that. And of course, I need to read that variable, not only for the cout (indeed, the error is reported at every reading attempt). Besides, the application doesn't crash, but still I would like to understand if I really have to worry about this "error".
