Feb 11, 2011I was running 10.04 LTS and had decided to stick to the LTS versions as I'm now running my machine as a server and don't want to be updating regularly.Every time I logged in via SSH I got a message telling me there where packages to update including a security update. So I did a search to find out how to perform an update on Ubuntu server from the command line.What I found was to do this:sudo apt-get updatesudo apt-get dist-upgradeAfter doing that I rebooted but now my machine gives me this message:

Sep 23, 2010We're having an issue with HTTP POST file uploads on our two Ubuntu PCs. For some reason, whenever one of our users attempts to submit a file in an HTML form, the request times out, usually with a 500 Internal Server Error message. This problem is not limited to one site, but occurs on all sites that use file uploads. Also, the problem does not appear to be with our network, as a Windows 7 PC on the same network can upload files to the same sites without any difficulties. The problem is not browser-specific; we have tested with Firefox, Epiphany, and Google Chrome and all produce the same results. The issue is relatively new, and was first observed within the last month; before this time, both machines had no problems uploading files.
Does anyone have ANY idea what could be causing this? I've tried a number of things, including rebooting the PCs, rebooting the network, disabling IPv6, etc. I'm not very experienced in Linux system administration, but I can use the terminal and am familiar with some terminal-based diagnostic tools, so if you need any additional info or want me to try something, please let me know! I've exhausted my own computer knowledge with regards to finding a solution to this problem.

So is the only solution to subscribe to the individual mailing list for each piece of software, or is there a more automatic way?
Ubuntu Installation :: Packages Marked As Updated Actually Not Installed
May 8, 2011I did a clean install of 11.04 this morning. Upon logging in, Update Manager appeared, telling me there were 67 packages to upgrade. I obliged, and the update progress window appeared, as usual. At this point I realized it was not a convenient time to install the updates. No progress had yet been made; Update Manager had not downloaded anything, the progress bar had not moved, and the status was "waiting". I canceled the update and closed Update manager. However, upon running it again, it thinks that it successfully installed all the packages. In the "Ubuntu Software Center" Update history, it shows all those packages as having been updated with a timestamp of when I canceled the update. Apt-get and aptitude will not update the packages either. It seems like the packages have been marked as updated even though no update was installed. How can I rectify this problem and get the package managers to actually install the updates?

Jul 15, 2010I did my update back when F13 was first out. A lot of the F12 packages are still on the machine. Should I be concerned. My latest thing was dealing with the Kmod-Nvidia packages left behind from F12. Someone suggested removing them and once I did my updater did its job perfectly.
So, the question is do I need to remove all the F12 packages or should I wait until there is another conflict? Secondly, if I should remove them, is it a search and destroy mission or can I simply nuke them all in one grouping?

1)Is there a way to keep these packages updated via a program? (If not I guess I am obliged to check manually for each of them.) 2) Also, sometimes when we build a package via sbopkg it is necessary to build other packages. Is there an option to install via sbopkg and the package and its dependencies required through just one command?

Jun 24, 2010I did the UPGRADE from Karmic Koala to Lucid, and everything was going well. But now I've been having problems with the UBUNTU UPDATE tool for the last 2 weeks. Every time I try to do an update check on the packages, I get the following message:Failed to fetch http:[url]....Release Unable to find expected entry deb-src/binary-i386/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.I've tried changing the servers to MAIN and others, and still no way to solve it. I've also checked for other posts, but haven't found a solution yet. Ubuntu :: Can't Login Since I Updated / Fix It?
Jun 7, 2010I'm using xubuntu 9.10 and yesterday (6/7 2010) there were 5 important updates which required restarting. So I restarted my computer and found out that I can no longer log in. I got to the login screen where I wrote write my password and it started the logging in but then the screen went black and I came back to the log in screen just like nothing had happened.
I can log in in safe mode but not in the normal GUI boot up. How do I fix this?(sorry for my rusty English btw)

But I'm currently tinkering with an old laptop I got as a "gift" which doesn't have an ethernet port, And if I wanted to use my cable modems usb connection to apt-get etc for the installed Ubuntu Lucid, I had to disconnect my router. This pc isn't yet configured with my mail client etc... So I thought I'd try the forum again...I noticed that using: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100423 Ubuntu/10.04 (lucid) Firefox/3.6.3 Which has not been modified yet (except to add the scroogle search bar) I keep timing out.
IEI logged in to ubuntu forums, found an existing thread related to something I'd like to do with it.clicked on quote, and began composing a followup. When I was ready to preview the thread I got an error that said I wasn't logged in. and suggested I use some included form to try again. The form looked like it wanted my username and password but wouldn't let me enter the required info into the blank fields... I had to simply log in again with the login link at the top of the forum page, and use the back button (alt+leftarrow) several times until my reply was recovered so that I could preview, fix typos & submit..I searched the forum for "forum login timeout" and found one relevant post which appeared to say the only reason it's OP had a problem was do to making changes to his copy of firefox but that it was fixed ([solved]) without saying how he fixed it. There was a reference to using about:config which is beyond my skill level...How does one keep the from login session from timing out while one's browser still has an open window to what was a logged in forum page anyway

May 15, 2011When restarting my dual boot system I wanted to start Win XP. Scrolling down the list I think I hit the left arrow key by mistake. I got what I think is the recovery menu. I chose #1, Continue Normal Boot (at least that's what I think it was). Then I was prompted for my login and password. The system accepted those and seemed happy but will go no further.
I've tried entering 'exit'. This simply causes the system to ask for login and pword again. see the attachment of my screen. I've searched the forum and haven't found a similar situation with a solution.I am reluctant to pull the power to shut down. Until this my system has been very stable and reliable.

Fedora Installation :: Update Media's Repo Information To Reflect Some Of Updated Packages
May 13, 2011I am creating custom install media using the Fedora Core 14 DVD as a base and I have gathered all of the packages and their dependencies I require using the yumdownloader command.I made sure to download the @core group along with the ones listed above. The problem I'm running into is that I don't know how to update the media's repo information to reflect some of the updated packages I have downloaded. So when I go to install on the device, it's saying it can't read/open a certain package and you can see that it's looking for an older version because I'm guessing its repo is telling anaconda that this is the specific version to look for. I'm looking for a way to "update" the repo found on the installation media.

Nov 27, 2010My system is Dell 4300S with 1.4 GHz Pentium processor, recently upgraded to 1 GB RAM,120 GB WDC1200JB hard drive Sony DRU-720A DVD/RW drive, ATT plugandshare wireless adapter with Atheros AR5001X chip, ATI Rage 128 Pro Ultra TF video card, and Actiontec V90, and 56KFlex modem (Agere System Venus). I attempted to use preupgrade to upgrade from Fedora 12 to 14 using wireless connection. It seems, that upgrade finished successfully, except I am not unable to get to a GDM login. I updated SElinux to selinux-policy-3.9.7-10 and selinux-policy-targeted-3.9.7-10, and touch /.autorelabel overnight, I was able to login using GDM once. And that is all. After I boot, after Ctrl+Alt+F4, I can login to terminal.

Jan 16, 2010I am using Ubuntu 9.10. I currently have two users myself and my wife. Yesterday morning when I tried to log in I receive the following messages:
"Could not update ICEauthority file /home/david/.ICEauthority"
then
"There is a problem with configuration server /usr/lib/libgonf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 with status 256"
and finally
"Nautilus could not create the following required folder /home/david/Desktop/.nautilius"
I searched the forum and followed some stuff about chmod 755 for the gconf file etc but still have the same problem. My wife can still log in with no problem by the way.
General :: Openfiler Post Install - Login As Root And Configure Everything Within The GUI
Feb 1, 2011I downloaded the lastest x86 stable release of openfiler and installed it on VBOX durring the install I selected to manually do the partitions and added a
/boot
swap (x2 ram)
/
Partition scheme. I selected DHCP client on the network configuration. Now from what I understand once I have done that I should be able to point my browser to https:<IP>:446 and login as root and configure everything within the GUI. But when I log in there is nothing to configure. My host system is Ubuntu x86_64 4GB Ram amd dual core processor.
