Software :: USB Key Fails Booting / Resolve This?
Apr 19, 2010
I followed the following two articles to create a bootable USB key that will run the Kaspersky Rescue Disk, but both methods fail, using two different USB keys:
UNetbootin - Create Bootable Live USB Disks For A Variety Of Linux Distributions From Windows Or Linux : "Determining root device: Could not find the root block device in ."
Creating Bootable Kaspersky Rescue USB Disk : "Could not find kernel image linux"
Kaspersky only provides support for when trying to boot from a CD. Does someone know what I could try to get this to work as shown in the articles?

I have a laptop with Windows 7 and Ubuntu installed in seperate partitions. When I boot up the computer I get options to boot either in windows 7 or Ubuntu. Yesterday I updated Ubuntu to 10.4 version. I have been having issues with grub rescue, which was rectified an hour ago. Now I can boot up into windows 7, but when I try to boot into Ubuntu, I get a GRUB screen as below code...

I'm having a strange issue with Filezilla that doesn't affect any other apps.I know my network isnt IPv6 friendly, so I've disabled it in Firefox and in Ubuntu - everything bar Filezilla finds and resolves addresses properly. Filezilla just gives me the responses below, trying to connect to 1.0.0.0:21 for any domain I try to FTP to. If I then go to terminal and do an ftp ftp.asdad.com etc, once terminal has resolved the domain, filezilla works - very odd. how I can stop having to do this step in terminal?

Did a new install of F14 on a T61 Thinkpad w/ Motorola DSL router (ATT supplied). The install was smooth and had no indications of problems.
When I went to use the browser, it showed a functional Fedora website. But if I try to go to goggle or any other web address, the browser complains that it can't resolve the web address.?

So when i initially boot (both using wubi and a usb stick.) it will start to go and then do the alternative boot option with a 5 second count down. Then if I'm lucky it will get passed that then either a black screen with just a flashing _ on it and it will freeze there. Or it will go to the ubuntu opening with the little dots for initial boot and it freezes there. (the dots don't move more then two and then it really freezes.) My specs are
i5 750
Nvidia Geforce GTS 250
1.5 TB harddrive
ASUS P7P55-M LGA 1156 Intel P55 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
Windows XP home edition 2006 with SP3.

Sometimes the screen displays four miniature versions of itself. Sometimes there is no display of the pre-boot message. When normal boots occur, often the screen display disappears entirely and irrevocably after about ten or twenty minutes.Sometimes everything behaves well with no troubles.

I've just migrated to Debian from Ubuntu on my server. So my first post here. I've had some problems and questions when installing and configuring Debian, now everything seems very smooth, but still I can't find answer to one question. My machine is headless and I allways use SSH to it. I have several partitions on machine so if one of them fails on booting time with fsck, I need to press CTRL+D combination to continue. In that case I need to go to the machine with monitor and keyboard and press that combination. Is there any way to automatically continue for example after 30 seconds ? Then I could log in to the system and check log files what is wrong. How can I do that ?

I have a problem booting anything from USB stick on my IBM Thinkpad T42. It used to run normally, I could even install Windows or Linux from it, but now it stopped working. This particular concern is about booting freshly installed Xubuntu version 9.04 off a Kingston 4GB flash stick. I've installed Xubuntu using usb-create program directly from a booted live cd. Installation went fine and all the options in BIOS are setup correctly (I think). In boot menu in BIOS the stick is recognized correctly and + appears in front of it. Stick is selected as primary boot device. BIOS usb support is also enabled.
Now when I power on the computer, it reads something from the stick and stops right after displaying:
SYSLINUX 3.63 Debian-2008=07=15 EBIOS ... etc...
Then nothing happens and the text stays on like this.

I'm writing this post from the BT5 Live CD. However, after install and reaching a CLI (on the HDD), when I run startx, my monitor simply displays 'invalid format' (obviously this works fine via the LiveCD)... I've installed Ubuntu and Fedora a few times on a few machines, and have never had any issues with the display... not sure where to start troubleshooting.

I'm migrating my OpenSuse 11.3 (which was update from 11.2, 11.1 ........ ) to a new hard drive. My partitions were reiserfs and in the migration I'm "converting" them to ext4, the conversion process is simple and it works fine for all of them except the root one:
1) I create a new partition on the new hard disk (bigger than the original one)
2) I format it with ext4
3) I copy all the data with cp -a from the original partition to the new one
I already have all the partitions migrated to the second disk, then I have tried to do it with the root partition:
-I've booted with a system rescue CD and I've done !9 2) and 3) with no problems.
-I've edited and changed al entries in fstab and grub conf (menu.lst) to point the new partitions
-I've reinstalled grub and it seemed It will be no problems booting, but
It begins booting, the grub menu appears, It begins booting the kernel, but suddenly:
waiting for /dev/root to appear: OK
fsck.reiserfs -a /dev/sda2
........
mount -o ro,ad,user_xattr -t reiserfs /dev/root /root
and it fails, because sda2 is not reiserfs, but why does it try to mount it as reiserfs if I'm not saying anywhere it is reiserfs?
This is my fstab:
Code:
#/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST3160211AS_6PT0V05Y-part2 / reiserfs acl,user_xattr 1 1
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD5000AADS-00S9B0_WD-WCAV91599607-part2 / ext4 acl,user_xattr 1 1
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD5000AADS-00S9B0_WD-WCAV91599607-part1 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD5000AADS-00S9B0_WD-WCAV91599607-part3 /home ext4 defaults 1 0
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST3500630A_9QG94AT1-part1 /mnt/backup auto noauto, defaults, users, exec .....
I've booted it also with SuperGrub2 disk and the same thing happened, so I think it's not a grub problem but I don't wknow why it tried to mount the root partition as reiserfs.

Plus an old case and PSU and an old 18gb IDE drive, and an old CD-RW drive
I put the CD in and boot the machine. The initial Ubuntu screen comes up ("Ubuntu" with the line of dots below it) for a few seconds, and then it disappears and I see this text:
(initramfs) mount: mounting /dev/loop0 on //filesystem.squashfs failed: Input/output error
Can not mount /dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs
At that point it hangs and will proceed no further. I've tried this with the latest Mythbuntu Live CD and the latest Ubuntu Desktop Edition Live CD. Both were x64 versions.

I switched a working Lucid KVM guest from linux-server to linux-virtual and it could not mount root at boot time and issued a panic instead. Switching back (booted from CD and used "rescue a broken system") revived the VM.
My first guess is that some DM driver module needed for LVM is missing from the linux-virtual package.

I have proftpd set up on my linux home server. As I have a dynamic IP at home, I am using DynDns.org to provide a hostname for me. I have told proftpd to use this address as the MasqueradeAddress, to allow passive FTP connections through my NAT router.
However, whenever I boot my server, proftpd fails to start saying it cannot resolve this address. I assume this is due to the boot order, as something network or DNS related hasn't started up by then and it can't find the address. How should I deal with this problem? Can I get proftpd to do its checking for the address later on? Or can I change the startup order so that proftpd is started as the final item in the boot sequence?

I'm trying to install a dual booting machine with OpenSUSE v11.1 32bit and CentOS v5.2 64bit. I installed OpenSUSE first and allowed it to install and configure grub in the MBR and after that I wanted to proceed with CentOS v5.2. The installation went fine with two notable exceptions:- when I had to configure grub installation parameters, CentOS offered me only 2 solutions: either install it on the MBR of the first hard disk or not installing it at all. Other distributions are more flexible allowing you to install it in the boot sector of the root partition for example. Because I didn't want to ruin the existent grub onfiguration, I reluctantly accepted not to install it for CentOS assuming that I could manually configure the entry later in grub's menu.lst file.
- when I was presented with the options for software components installation, I've clicked on virtualization category/function because I intend to use the machine as a VMware host. There was no guidance on screen at that point and I blindly assumed that by choosing the virtualization function I would get necessary tools and drivers that will help me further on. It seems that this was a wrong move as you can see it below.
After completing the installation, I tried to search for a template or guiding on how the menu entry in menu.lst should look like but the grub directory was empty, not surprisingly because I've told CentOS earlier not to install it. Using the files in the /boot directory from the CentOS installation I tried to improvise a menu entry but it's not working. The boot stops with famous Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format. Using the file command to check what kind of files I'm trying to load as kernels I'm getting :
marte:~ # file /mnt/vmlinuz-2.6.18-92.el5xen
/mnt/vmlinuz-2.6.18-92.el5xen: gzip compressed data, from Unix, last modified: Tue Jun 10 19:20:51 2008, max compression

i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup, when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because, again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then, instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing, once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup, then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process, once i finished i continued to the next part, the installation, but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data, after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot, appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line, since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]

I've been searching the forums for any posts that cover my problem, but most of the booting problems I've found are different from mine.Anywho, the situation:ell laptop, 2 partitions, first is Windows XP, second is Ubuntu Karmic.Whenever I turn on my computer the first loading screen that shows up (is this the BIOS? Excuse my little knowledge of this stuff), before GRUB loads, is really slow. It takes about a minute to load. However, whenever I restart from my XP partition, it suddenly loads fast! After trying a "fix" I found on another thread, nobody can log into my laptop! After each attempt, a single message shows up in /var/log/messages code...
This worked for me:
Use a Ubuntu Live CD to boot up, and choose a command-line (shell) option.
With this, set your $HOME directory (/home/username) permissions to something appropriate (I used 755) and make sure all directories can be listed with the "ls" command. Then remove nautilus with code...
The only thing I did differently was I booted into recovery mode from the grub menu rather than from live CD.
