how to set the tcp ip parameter while linux boots up in my board.
Currently i am giving it like : tcp ip=:::::eth0:dhcp
If i have my own static ip and its corresponding mac-id can i change it for my board when i boot up.
So I decided to try Ubuntu from a live USB drive 10.04 LTS on my Toshiba laptop as the windows Vista SP2 was running really slow. I liked it and clicked on the install icon. From there I set it for duel boot and off it went. The install worked great. I then downloaded the startup manager and changed the start up to be default of windows loader. Now when it boots into windows it goes to the windows recovery thing and won't start windows.

After selecting my USB device from the startup menu, I see a black screen with the following information:

With a blinking cursor. I cannot enter any input, but my keyboard has lights on as normal, so I assume it's working.
The following is a list of my hardware:
Processor: Intel Core2 Duo E6750
Motherboard: MSI nForce 650i P6N SLI-FI
Graphics: nVidia GeForce GT 240
HDD: Western Digital Raptor 150 GB
USB: Memorex Mini TravelDrive 2GB
I am trying to create a dual-boot system, and currently have Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit installed.
I'm using the Ultimate Boot CD, and I've added a bunch of customized .iso's to it. I can boot into those .iso files fine, but most of them are mini-versions of Linux that are designed to run off of a CD. When they try to boot, they try to run off the CD (which obviously isn't there since they're on a USB drive) and then either freeze, or don't work in some other way.
Is there any way to edit the .iso files to tell them they're booting off of a USB drive? I'm assuming there'd be something somewhere in the boot configuration files to do this. Where would that be? I would think it'd be different for different ones, but are there some places that are standard for live CDs? What would I have to change? EDIT: Just to make exactly what I'm asking clear...I know there's stuff all over the place on how to boot a .iso from USB. That's not the problem, I can already do that. What I'm wondering is how to make the OS stored in the .iso realize that it's booting from USB and not CD?
I'm trying to get back into Linux after a few years off.
I have tried booting from a Live CD using Flash Linux and Damn Small Linux.
Flash Linux reports unable to mount CDROM and then provides a command line - I assume I have the kernel, a shell and little else at this point? Can I mount the CD and continue?
DSL seems to do something similar but freezes with a blank screen. I have the option of entering parameters prior to booting with DSL (but not with Flash) I have tried the parameter which copies the CD to RAM and then boots without success.
I plan on installing Debian to my HD in the near future but felt like playing around with Live CDs prior to this in order to get reacquainted.
I have googled this issue and it seems there are other noobs out there with the same model of PC (HP DV6) who are having similar problems but I could not find a solution.
As an aside - this is the kind of issue that IMO, still prevents Linux from becoming a mainstream OS.

I'm an experienced Linux developer who has run into a little problem. I'm using a National Instruments 8170 chassis, among the normal ports, it has a FDD and USB port but this model does not allow booting from a USB CDROM ( I tried a BIOS update, that didn't help either ). I made this cool customized 550MB FC8 LiveCD wtih X, GCC, various apps, etc. and a kernel 2.6.30 & 2.6.18 boot floppy disk with all the needed drivers. The floppy boots to a shell with all the busybox utils, etc. and detects the USB CDROM media and all its files.
My Question is: How do I get the kernel and initrd on the Live CD to start or boot after booting from the Floppy disk ?, I mean, I want to load linux again but this time from the CD after booting linux from floppy, if that makes sense. I'm just using the floppy to boot and recognize the USB CDROM. This can be done with MSDOS and loadlin but loadlin has an issue(it hangs) with the newer kernels (2.6.18 and greater). I searched for the loadlin source code to port it to linux but was unable to find it on the net.
I am using a linux kernel 2.6.36 using mips architecture. I have succesfully booted the machine through Flash memory, but it is not booting through nfs. It is getting stuck at the stage where the image starts loading. In short the vmlinux.img file is being copied properly to nfsroot but the image is not loading.

(this statement gets repeated like four times with different logical block id.

It is not the first time i install operating systems on virtual box though it is the first time i receive such an error with backtrack.

I've been working on creating a Live CD with the tools I want, just for my use with system recovery and repair. For the most part, things have gone very well. The Live CD actually works fine, somewhat. I have run in to a problem where it doesn't actually boot on a lot of hardware.
What happens is during boot, while the modules are loading, the boot process hangs and the disc drive spins down. While I thought it might be a kernel problem, I'm using the .config from the latest gentoo Live CD, which boots fine on the same hardware.
When I boot from the CD, it starts to boot and then continously repeats:

It stops on boot for about 10 seconds each time then gfxboot for not even a second before the cycle continues. I have tried more than one CD, so I don't think that is the issue. It even did the exact same thing when I tried it on PCLOS 2010.10. Both versions I tried were KDE. trying to figure out how to get past this.
I have a computer with 2 HD. In one of them there are installed XP and F14. In the other there are several XP files and Mandriva (the last installed distro). At booting, the grub window I see is the Mandriva's one, where I can select F14 or XP. I should like to see at booting the Fedora's grub.conf window with selecting options for XP or Mandriva. How can I change this?

I have the ISO (that I had previously) on a USB courtesy of UNetBootIn. All appears well until, quite quickly, I receive an error after the loading process which goes something like:

Error: cannot find disk at [hash-code - looks like 0ace5f etc etc, is about 12 char's in length.]Something very similar (but not same error I think) happened when I tried to do the same with my OpenSolaris or Fedora install. I.e., gets as far as the very beginning of the loader and then: bork.
At least one of them said "will reboot in 120 secs". Saves me the trouble!
I'm using a system with nvidia graphics card gt220 with driver version 190. I tried installing mplayer and that installation procedure upgraded my nvidia driver. The installation was not successful and it gave an error that there are some broken packages. I ignored that warning and shutdown the system. When i tried to boot again after some time, it took me to a terminal instead of login screen.
I tried to recover the system using "report broken packages" option from recovery mode. I could able to delete all the broken packages. After removing all the broken packages, i tried to install nvidia drivers using command "apt-get install nvidia-glx-190".
I deleted the partition I had grub installed on.
I have a partition that I want to install grub on... it is SDA5. how to do this booting from a live Ubuntu 10.04 cd?
I have tried other methods I have found on google, but it keeps coming back to grub rescue.
I am on my new HP envy 14, and I have both a USB drive and a Live CD with the latest version of 64 bit ubuntu.
When I run the Live CD, it takes me to a purple screen with a keyboard and person symbol at the bottom, and after a minute it opens up a black window that looks like a command prompt, and then the screen goes black.
When I try to run the USB, either selecting the "install" option or the "run from USB option", it goes through the boot processes like everything is working, and then the screen goes black.
The same thing happened on my main computer with a 32 bit live CD.
I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a machine with a dodgey graphics card. This machine will break on normal graphics mode but run fine in failsafe graphics mode. I need this machine to be able to be controlled remotely and this is where the problem comes in.
If this machine is being controlled remotely, it may need to be rebooted remotely. Rebooting it into failsafe mode at the moment consists of two prompts: one to put it into failsafe, and the other to "keep it for one session". Does anyone know how to reconfigure Grub or whatever else so it will automatically go into Failsafe Graphics mode without any user interaction? (BTW, where it asked me to "keep for one session" or "reconfigure now", I clicked reconfigure and it didn't do anything. So I need to do it manually)
Does any one know how to force the usb ports to work under low graphics boot mode? The mouse and usb memory stick both do not work.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup,when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because,again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then,instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing,once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup,then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process,once i finished i continued to the next part,the installation,but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data,after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot,appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line,since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]
my system crashed and so i tried booting from a live usb pen drive. but i get the following error messages (see picture). does this mean that my hard drive is curruped? what can i do? i alreadys tried booting from different live medias, but i cant get anything to run (gparted and system recovery live).
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am not too new to the Linux scene, I mainly use CentOS on a day to day basis on my server, however, I would like to start using Ubuntu on a full time basis, I am sick of how slow Win7 can be and all of the bulk. Sooo, I downloading ubuntu, burned it, verified it, y'know, the usual.Backed up everything I needed and restarted pc. The purple splash screen came up and started to load. After about 3 minutes I see a very distorted version of my Win7 desktop! I am then unable to Ctrl+Alt+F1 as my keyboard becomes unresponsive. I have disabled my graphics card (Nvidia 240 GT (I think)) and just used the on board Intel chipset but still this happens. What is going on? I am desperate to use it and I am finding this really frustrating.Also I did manage to ctrl alt f1 at one point and I tried to restart gdm but it errored out on me

View 1 Replies View RelatedWell, I noticed this by accident while trying to use dash for the rc.d scripts. I messed up and forgot to link it to /bin, and as such, the system failed to boot properly and would not respond. I rebooted (forcefully), but this messed up the filesystem. I booted the sw64 install DVD and tried to mount it, and it would not mount.
I tried to run fsck on it, but it said that fsck.jfs in NOT available. Eventually I booted my old slamd64 12.1 DVD and it had fsck.jfs. Any reason why this rather useful program was removed ? Or is it a bug, or is my DVD messed up? I guess I should just keep around another live CD, I do keep knoppix, but it boots so slow and I don't understand it at all, it's so hard to do anything with it.
When I attempt to boot from the new Fedora 10 Live CD, it comes up with the initial screen, then gives me an error message saying something like, "Error with intranfs/init," and then it drops to bash, which I do not know how to use. I have P4 HT @3 GHZ., 2GB of RAM, a 400GB primary HD split between Windows XP and Mythbuntu 8.10 (dual boot), a 200 MB secondary HD (the primary is SATA, the other IDE), etc. I wanted to try the Live CD before deciding whether to change over to Fedora. I burned the ISO image of the Live CD to a CD-RW myself.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI cannot get my driver to work in 10.04 LTS. I've googled all around and still can't fix this. Randomly when I boot up it says ubuntu is running in low graphics mode. It was working yesterday. I had this problem before and it just randomly fixed its self. I have an Nvidia 320m graphics card with drivers from the hardware drivers program.

I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10. When booting, there is this "Ubuntu" writing on purple background and dots which are lighting up in order. On my machine this is in text mode. In 10.04 it was graphical. What can I do to have it again graphical?

I can login and everything but I'm a noob and don't know what to do. I booted to recovery mode and selected fix broken packages but this didn't fix the problem. is there anything else I can try?
