Ubuntu Installation :: System Seems To Freeze While Booting / Resolve This?

So when i initially boot (both using wubi and a usb stick.) it will start to go and then do the alternative boot option with a 5 second count down. Then if I'm lucky it will get passed that then either a black screen with just a flashing _ on it and it will freeze there. Or it will go to the ubuntu opening with the little dots for initial boot and it freezes there. (the dots don't move more then two and then it really freezes.) My specs are
i5 750
Nvidia Geforce GTS 250
1.5 TB harddrive
ASUS P7P55-M LGA 1156 Intel P55 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
Windows XP home edition 2006 with SP3.
I'm very new to Linux and have installed debian Lenny. but I have met some problems. The biggerst one is that I cant start debian. To be more exactly, debian freeze after i come to the loggin scean, I cant move the mouse and i cant wright.
You may say that this is hardwear error but its not, cus i can run grubs singel-user-mode and do whatever i want in the shell.
so my question is, how do i fix this from shell. I think maby I shld change something in xorg.conf but not sure what, and how.
I have a problem with getting my Linux distribution (Debian amd64-bit) to install. Everything works the way it should - from booting a live CD/DVD (any distro) to running the text-based or gui installation right after bootup. Up until the Linux installation gets to the step for detecting my SATA hard disk drive(s), but before (or at the same time as) initiating the partitioning step, it'll freeze/hang my screen and my CD/DVD drives instantaneously - and the only fix is a forced shutdown and/or hard reboot.
I don't know what causes this, but I tried googling online and all that I really found out was that it might be an issue with running 32-bit vs 64-bit installations - but this is not the case; from running Gparted on Knoppix 32-bit or the partitioning step during a Debian 64-bit installation. Also, I read a random post online related to running kernel commands / parameters alongside the installation (e.g. acpi=off or something similar) stating that it might help?
Anyone got any ideas or solutions? I'm a real newbie when it comes to Linux (though, I'm quite knowledgeable when it comes to computers and technology, and Windows) - else I wouldn't be posting in this forum sub-section, hehe. I can't quite get my head around this one - despite trying my best to find a solution online beforehand.
[I'm not sure if this is the right forum. This is the closest I've found]. I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (dual boot with Windows XP SP3). After Ubuntu starts, it takes about 10 seconds, and the computer halts. No screen/mouse/keyboard activity. If I start Ubuntu under Recovery Mode, with failsafeX, it doesn't happen.
In the Windows all is fine. What did I wrong? [My CPU is: Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU E2140 @ 1.60GHz, if it matters...]
I updated 9.10 and system crashed during update and is now unbootable. It seems to freeze (or is just taking a really long time) at fsck. Is there any way to make my computer usable again without reinstalling the whole OS?
I just recently notice that my Fedora 13 is randomly stop at boot. This is a fresh install less than a week and with all the updated kernel and software as of today. I could not get much information from /var/log/messages (only about 3 lines at the time it froze).
It froze straight after it finishes the boot sequence. I can see a mouse cursor but that's about it. The last init sequence I could see before going to X was "atd" (if that helps at all)
This install is on a single Seagate 1.5TB drive without any other drives attached to the system (I rule out if that's problem with the other hard drives) on Gigabyte P35DS3 mobo on ICH9 port the mobo has AHCI mode for the hard drive I got some bad sector on the hard drive (40 sectors)
For some reason, it kept stopping when I cold boot. Once it stop and I press the reset button it normally works.
I found another forum mentioning it can be issue with the video driver. So I here's further information of my system code...
I just bought a Intel D525MW ITX board, a PicoPSU and a stick of 2GB ram. I burned the new stable debian netinst to a disk and booted it up from a usb cdburner. At this point I had a usb keyboard and a usb kingston pen drive (temporary / ) connected. The computer would freeze whenever I chose a menu item. I rebooted a couple of times, same thing. I disconnected the usb pen and were finally able to start a graphical install. I quickly reconnected the pen and the install went fine as far as I could see. Now. When I boot from the pen it just freezes showing "GRUB lading. Welcome to GRUB!" and a blinking underscore.
I were able to boot the usb pen on my Alienware laptop just fine - although it wanted a reboot after it ran a fsck.
I have intel motherboard(d102ggc2) and 4Gb flash drive. I've created live USB using usb-creator-gtk(ubuntu 10.04) There is no option "all fixed disks" in BIOS settings (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1616610) Drive is formatted into FAT32 using GParted (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1167803)

Problem I get "Boot error" when booting using live USB. There are only two words(please let me know if i can get any other logs). Issue is not reproducible on other env(hp625 and other desktop).
I recently updated my 10.04 (se remix,I guess it's only preinstalled language support and some other thinks like link to ubuntu se homepage; http://ubuntu.se/content.php/322-Ubu...it-uppdatering!) to 10.10.
I now I'm stuck with a quite annoying (but not sever) error. When I shut down the computer doesn't turn of it just restart?!
I know I had some similar issue with my old EEEPC but that was a GRUB 1 error and now I'm running the latest GRUB so ...
I hadn't done any major updates for about a couple weeks, and then I downloaded a whole bunch - 100+ mb worth. One of these updates was the new kernel 2.6.32-23 (I'm now on the 2.6.32-24 kernel with no improvement). After doing these updates my computer froze at the point where the 5 white dots (10.04) became red upon booting. Since then it generally crashes about every 2nd boot. Also, the times when it does boot, it takes a bit longer to boot (maybe 5-10 secs).
It's no longer snappy like the 10.04 it was just prior to doing the updates.Today it seemed to freeze during login with the prompt still showing once I'd put in my details. When I say it freezes, nothing is happening but I can still do CTRL+ALT+DELETE to reboot the computer, so it's not a full freeze. I've been asked does the old kernel crash it and having tried it once or twice I think it still crashed once. So perhaps it's not the kernel.
I received a laptop that was running XP home that had crashed. MY son was not able to determine if it was hardware or software. So He installed Linux Ubuntu 9.10 Gnome desktop 2.28.1. Often I have to reboot because freezes. Once I get online, the mouse freezes I have tried an external mouse, it does the same. The Laptop model is a Sony model PCG- 6F1L.
I'm trying to boot ubuntu 11 from pen drive but all i get is a blinking cursor prompt on booting. I've tried Unetbootin and UltraISO but both give the same blinking cursor. Please suggest a solution.
I just installed 2.6.35.12-88.fc14.x86_64 via Software Update and rebooted. When selecting new kernel to boot from, the boot sequence doesn't finish. I am not sure how t o troubleshoot; I am prompted for the PassWord for encrypted /home, but after that, it freezes.
I followed the following two articles to create a bootable USB key that will run the Kaspersky Rescue Disk, but both methods fail, using two different USB keys: UNetbootin - Create Bootable Live USB Disks For A Variety Of Linux Distributions From Windows Or Linux : "Determining root device: Could not find the root block device in ." Creating Bootable Kaspersky Rescue USB Disk : "Could not find kernel image linux" Kaspersky only provides support for when trying to boot from a CD. Does someone know what I could try to get this to work as shown in the articles?
Just upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10. upgraded from update manager. System would not boot. Booted live cd and used the 9.10 menu.lst. Now boots but takes a long time. I don't know much about the kernel. I assume they are listed in the /boot directory and are called by menu.lst (dual boot w/ XP) (btw: I am ready to get rid of XP once I get this fixed). 9.10 appears to use 2.6.31-20-generic, therefore, I assume 10.04 uses 2.6.32-25-generic.
I have a Dell Studio laptop, which I am trying to make dual boot and in big trouble. These are the steps I completed.
1. Backedup all my important data on a USB drive. 2. Prepared a Ubuntu LiveUSB and booted in Ubuntu. 3. Used GParted tool to repartition my hard drive (320GB) as follows,
4. Accepted all these changes in GParted and restarted the machine. 5. Used VISTA installation disk to start VISTA installation on 1st NTFS partition (Partition 1).
-Everything was fine until now -
6. The VISTA installer took a really long time (around half hour) just showing copying files with 0% completion status message. 7. Somehow I got impatient and tried to cancel the installation.
Now, the problem is the system does not boot up even with my USB LiveCD or Windows VISTA installer. It just shows blank screen and nothing appears.
I have a dual boot machine with WinXP/Linux Mint on it. I am looking to erase both of them and put up Ubuntu 11.04.
I have chosen to go with a live USB install for this. The live USB boots fine and everything seems usable. However, when I tried to install it would tell me that I do not have 4GB available for the install which seemed a bit weird since I have a 160GB Maxtor HDD.
After digging around a bit I realized that the system does not see my hard drive. Running fdisk -l would only show the USB drive that I am booting from and not the main HDD.
I tried to have a look in /dev to see if my HDD is there and not mounted. But aside from sda which is the USB I did not find an sdb or hd entry.
Has anyone encountered a similar problem while trying to install Ubuntu 11.04?
P.S.: The HDD works fine, I can see it in BIOS and in the other 2 OS-es that I have installed.
I recently recieved Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop Edition CD-ROM through snail-mail after requesting a copy online and I want to install it on my laptop, although I wish to keep Vista which is on it now.
My laptop has a 250GB hard drive. Although when in Vista this is represented as two separate drives each of 110GB, (C or ACER and (D or DATA.
Using the CD, I start the installation and everything is straightforward and self explanatory, until I get stuck at step 4...
Where I am told by the ubuntu installer: "This computer has several operating systems on it." (I'm confused now, I thought it had one, Vista.)
Beneath I am shown a bar representing my disk space which is divided between...
I am given the option to use the entire disk: 'SCSI1 (0,0,0)(sda) - 250.1GB ATA WDC WD2500BEVT - 2', (and from the mention of 250BG in the name I'm assuming this is one disk and not the two separate drives named C: & D: in Vista.) ...along with a warning - "This will delete Windows Vista (loader), Windows Vista (loader), Microsoft Windows XP Embedded and install Ubuntu 9.04". (The aforementioned "several operating systems" obviously.)
But I wish to keep Vista, so I select the option to "specify partitions manually" and am brought to a screen named 'Prepare Partitions', where there is a table somewhat like this:
I am then given the option for "New partition table", and if I select any of the bottom four devices I can 'edit partition' or 'delete partition'.
Selecting the device /dev/sda3 (because it is the one that I'm guessing has no operating system data on it, judging by the previous screen) and choosing 'edit partition', allows me the following options...to create a new partition size, to select what I want to use the partition as. (There are also two options for formating a partition, which is a checkbox, and Mount point. These are both greyed out.)
When I look at the 'Use as:' option, within 'edit partition', the drop down box allows me to use the partition in the following ways: - do not use the partition - swap area - NTFS - FAT 32 file system - FAT16 file system - XFS journaling file system - ReiserFS journaling file system - Ext2 file system - Ext4 journaling file system - Ext3 journaling file system
am running fc10 and windows xp on my laptop.As usual my windows got crashed.When i inserted windows xp cd, the system is not booting from disc properly. It shows inspecting systems hardware and then turns into a blank screen.
This is a bit of an odd problem that's been happening to me recently. My home folder is a version of Fedora old, I've been using the same one between Fedora 11 and 12 (which I'm now using).
When booting up, I notice that my system fonts are not the ones I have manually set. They're the ugly version, whatever exact font it is. It's only when I select System->Appearances from the menu that the system seems to detect my seletions to use Liberation fonts in all areas, and then everything instantly switches to the more visually pleasing Liberation fonts. This is a strange bug, I was wondering if anyone has experienced this or can point me in the right direction?
Im probally just being a noob here but for the projects sake I thought it would be good to identify this problem. I have an old advent laptop and I tried to install Opensuse from DVD on it. I followed the installation as normal but when I tried to boot it said some sort of check was forced and then I have to enter the admin/root password upon doing this I got the message system repair # in red. I have tried to repair the system through the installation DVD and tried re-installing it but I still get the same message.
I'm running ubuntu 10.04 as a mythtv box and it works mostly fine. But occasionally the system will hang during booting and the last messages I can see are code...
So, I don't know. What is the problem? This system is supposed to run mostly unattended, I can't check all the time whether it booted alright.
Although I'm a linux user, I don't know much about the whole booting process myself. I normally have a friend that I can consult when things don't go the way I expected. But here's the thing: he updated my computer and went away. And of course I can't reach him and I really need it to work. And moreover, I want to be able to sole things myself.
The booting process stops halfway. The last thing it says is: can't access tty: job control turned off (initramfs) ...
Well i just installed ubuntu and its amazing but after playing around a little i installed compiz and when i restarted my laptop it just wont let me log on it keep freezing. i dono what to do how do i over write it or replace it or fix this problem?

My partner and I share the computer, so we are normally both logged in.
When we come to turn the computer off, one of us will log out then the other shuts down (to have a clean shutdown), but when either one of us uses 'Logout' the system just freezes, no response, nothing, have to turn the machine off via power button.
We can 'switch user' fine, and everything else appears ok but log out fails, I did try reporting a bug on this, but seems to have got taken over with people with dual screens / SLI cards, taking it over and its not the same thing.
I get the 'impression' its a graphics driver issue, I'm using the 'recommended' Nvidia driver (am at work and can't remember which version sorry).
I'm putting this in general, because I'm not sure if many of the specifics are relevant.I have an everex cloudbook which I purchased from eBay with hardy herron on it.I finally got around, today (I've had it for a year), to installing netbook remix 9.10 with a usb key I had also purchased from eBay.Now, during the upgrade (using update manager) from 9.10 to 10.04, the system appears to have frozen.(desktop frozen, no response to keyboard or mouse).Now, I'm not sure if something could still be happening inside there, and if it would be a good idea to let the machine site overnight before rebooting it. Frankly, it happened once already, and I rebooted, and update manager just took up where it left off once I logged in.
I have not determined what's causing these freezes. It's not a new machine, of course (everex, afaik, doesn't even exist now), so maybe netbook-remix is too taxing on the hardware? I installed xfce to get away from the bloated netbook-remix graphical menu garbage, which did seem to allow the system to run faster. Anyway, the real question here is, while the interface appears frozen, could the upgrade still be developing under the surface? (I hear a fan running in there. There is no hdd to spin, but flash memory, so I don't know if the fan is any indication of internal activity). Would you wait to reboot it? (update mgr indicated 4 hrs remaining to upgrade, in the installing upgrades phase, not downloading, appears it froze during "Running post-installation trigger install-info"). Or just reboot it and see what happens (get update mgr to start again?)? The system never froze on me with hardy. It was pretty quick and snappy, in fact.
Running Ubuntu 10.4 32bit (only) on my system with ati graphics card. I just ran a software update, and I believe a new kernel was installed. When I rebooted, I saw the "Ubuntu" loading screen, but then the system froze up and the screen went completely blank. Thinking it was a graphics issue, I tried to press escape to get into the grub bootloader. However, when I pressed escape at the proper time, the system just rebooted.
Thinking that grub was broken, I used a live cd to purge grub from my system and re-install it. When I rebooted, I got the same initial problem: I get the "Ubuntu" loading screen, but then the screen goes black and the system appears to be frozen. Again, if I press escape to try the grub bootloader, the system just reboots.
