I'm trying to boot ubuntu 11 from pen drive but all i get is a blinking cursor prompt on booting.
I've tried Unetbootin and UltraISO but both give the same blinking cursor.
Please suggest a solution.
So when i initially boot (both using wubi and a usb stick.) it will start to go and then do the alternative boot option with a 5 second count down. Then if I'm lucky it will get passed that then either a black screen with just a flashing _ on it and it will freeze there. Or it will go to the ubuntu opening with the little dots for initial boot and it freezes there. (the dots don't move more then two and then it really freezes.) My specs are
i5 750
Nvidia Geforce GTS 250
1.5 TB harddrive
ASUS P7P55-M LGA 1156 Intel P55 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
Windows XP home edition 2006 with SP3.
I followed the following two articles to create a bootable USB key that will run the Kaspersky Rescue Disk, but both methods fail, using two different USB keys:
UNetbootin - Create Bootable Live USB Disks For A Variety Of Linux Distributions From Windows Or Linux : "Determining root device: Could not find the root block device in ."
Creating Bootable Kaspersky Rescue USB Disk : "Could not find kernel image linux"
Kaspersky only provides support for when trying to boot from a CD. Does someone know what I could try to get this to work as shown in the articles?
I am running a hp dv701175nr laptop and am booting ubuntu 11.04 from a usb flash drive. I can not seem to find my internal drive that has windows 7 stored on it. I tried to mount it but it give me this error:

mount failed
I can't use this operating system if I can't access my windows 7 drive and I really want to use this OS .
EDIT: Okay, so I think I have found my problem, but I don't know how to fix it, there are differences in my mtab and fstab commands, I will post what they say in a second, but I do not know how or what I need to do to change and make the settings right

Problem
I get "Boot error" when booting using live USB.
There are only two words(please let me know if i can get any other logs).
Issue is not reproducible on other env(hp625 and other desktop).
I browsed through the forums last night for several hours looking for a solution to this and nothing specific to 10.10 came up but i tried several of the methods suggested for previous versions yet none of them seemed to help. the disk spins up when inserted but ubuntu doesn't even show that the drive exist .

Everything works on the CD's writing/reading. I can play DVD movies, but thats it.

I purchased four different purchases of DVDs to make sure the problem was not the disks. I had that happen to me a few time with CDs.
I do not get any errors of any kind. The drive light goes on and off like it should.
I am trying to install opensuse on an IBM 8188 desktop with a single SATA hdd. The software appears to load just fine.. standard install but when I reboot the box .. believing it should just boot from the hard drive I get the message no OS installed. I've adjusted the bios and the drive order and I have changed to install parameters for APC or APIC.... you know what I mean... doesn't matter NO JOY IN MUD VILLE.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to partition/format a new external hard disk for backup and have run into a snag that now prevents my computer from booting. In the description below of what happened please bear with me as I do my best to remember the commands and screen output (which for obvious reasons I don't have in front of me).As root.The disk was subsequently writable. However, I then realized that the default start and end cylinders had resulted in a very small partition apparently occupying some free cyclinders in the beginning of the disk.
So next I ran fdisk again, deleting the sdc4 I had just created and creating a new one instead, this time using the cylinders at the end of the disk. When I exited fdisk I got a message something like that the new tables can only be read upon a subsequent reboot. I ran mkfs again, but not e2label. Indeed using /sbin/fdisk -l, sdc4 still had the small size as defined initially. So I rebooted.
Now when it comes up I get something like "checking filesystems. fchk.ext3: can't resolve 'LABEL=/media/LaCie2TB1'" and am prompted to login as root to correct. I tried to simply delete sdc4 again but that didn't help. I also tried to edit /etc/fstab (using vi, which I don't know at all) but it kept telling me that this is a read only file, even though permissions are rw for root.Can anyone out there help me so that (1) I can boot into my computer, and (2) I can correctly partition and format the hard drive??

I have a micro-atx box with a CF reader that pretends it's an IDE HDD. You can boot off this thing and this is intended to be a "diskless" system. The vendor claims only 17 watts when at rest.My plan is that this will be a printer & backup server but the backup drive will be a USB drive that will only be turned on when needed so I want the box run without a HDD if possible.
My concern is the limited write cycle life of FLASH drives. I bought the best quality I could but I still want to preserve it as long as possible.I formatted it as ext2, for example, to stop the journeling writes of ext3 or ext4.Has anyone created a check list of configuration settings that will give the flash the longest life possible.
I have been having trouble with my latest LinuxMCE core server (based on Kubuntu 8.10). It will load the OS with no problems on the IDE drive, unless I have another, or multiple, hard drive installed. It doesn't matter if I loaded onto the IDE or SATA drives, it gives me the "ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid....does not exist. Dropping to shell." I thought it might be the loader, as just to get it into 'live' mode I need to enter 'pci=nomsi'. I tried to load Fedora (to try AMAHI), but it just sent me into a grub loop. If I try to have the second disk installed while running the install, it gets frozen at the busybox. The whole reason for going to this combo of system and OS was to be able to have multiple pci/e cards for security, TV tuning, etc, and have a minimum of 8TB onboard which can stay on 24/7/365. 120 gig just won't cut it!

I downloaded the desktop edition and created a USB drive. Then I started to reboot my computer, but after it got past the screen where I can edit the BIOS settings, it just went to a black screen and said "Boot error" or something like that. I made the USB drive first in the Boot Order.

I have a new hard drive on which I want to install ubuntu (IDE, with an adapter for USB), and another computer running ubuntu. How can I prepare this new hard drive so that a computer can boot from it and install Ubuntu? I don't wish to complete the install from another computer, because I want all the hardware detection and drivers to correct upon install.
All of this is using Ubuntu 10.04 Things I've tried already:
fai network boot - made some progress but have not found a set of instructions that clearly explains how to do this all the way through with ubuntu.
installing grub - it seems to be difficult to install grub on a new hard drive with no OS, but if I could get grub working, ubuntu can be installed from there.
I was given an external USB drive which has Windows XP Pro on the first partition. I can mount and access the partition with no problem. When I run update-grub, it finds the XP partition and creates a menu entry for it. But when I select it from the Grub menu, I get an error that the device is not found.

i recently made a startup disk for 10.10 on my external usb drive. i booted up using the usb drive and installed as normal except now when i want to use ubuntu it only works if i select to boot using the same external usb drive. i made sure to select the laptop's HDD for installing ubuntu, so i'm not sure why this would be.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI believe I successfully installed Debian onto my external hard drive, but when I try to boot to it from grub I get "unrecognized device string". My HD install of Ubuntu works correctly. From a running system I get:

So I am at my wits end trying to figure out why this won't work. I am trying to install ubuntu 9.10 on my netbook (I hear it runs better than remix) but an running into a wall. I am already using Jolicloud as my main os on my main partition. I have used Unetbootin to get the 9.10 iso on my re-movable media. I have gone into the bios and chose to have it look at the re-movable first, then my 1st partition on the HD. For some reason it never looks at the USB drive. I have disabled everything on boot except for the media and i get a screen that says "insert bootable media or restart" then i have to go back into bios and enable the HD again.
Side note, the media I am using might not be in fat 32 because I haven't figured out how to format in linux but, I have formatted in windows so that it is fat 32 and got the same problem.
I have an 8GB Sandisk Cruzer, which reportedly works just fine booting Linux. It does have U3 still present on one of the partitions, but this should not pose any problems either. I also have a 2GB FAT32 partition for storing Windows stuff. The rest (5.7GB) I have reserved for Ubuntu. Windows reports this as an active partition, and the Ubuntu boot CD reports this partition as dev/sdb5. I have installed Ubuntu from the Desktop CD to the USB partition using the guided install (largest continuous free space) and selected the boot (grub) location on the same partition (sdb5), as I'd rather not modify my existing windows bootloader. A 300MB swap partition also exists on the drive. When I attempt to boot the USB drive from either my laptop (Inspiron 1505) or desktop (Abit IP35 Pro), only a blinking dash (or underscore) appears with no LED activity on the flash drive. Could it be that the MBR of the flash drive needs to be aware that the grub install is located at sdb5?
View 1 Replies View RelatedDrive will not read on the Mac after booting in Ubuntu!I haven't booted Ubuntu in months (October?), but no hardware changes except for the expresscard. Ubuntu runs nicely in a virtual machine from the Mac side, so I made a fresh VM with Karmic. Couldn't remember the cool apps I had running before (it's been a while), so I booted into Ubuntu to check it out. The HDD was connected and on. (Oops.)It was fine last night on the Mac. I did not notice if it mounted this morning (still in OSX, 10.6.2, Mac sleeping overnight and HDDs on for an unrelated backup). So there is a very slim possibility this has nothing to do with Ubuntu.
Back to Ubuntu, the other external (Firewire 800, HFS+) mounted as usual. Again, I cannot recall if the Fantom mounted. I have not installed drivers for the expresscard/eSATA in Ubuntu (separate driver install is required on the Mac a rarity). I scribbled down the names of the apps I was looking for, and rebooted the Mac to OSX. Where's my HD? Disk Utility sees it as unformatted, and oddly enough, SCSI. If I plug it in via USB, it simply sees an unformatted disk. eSATA is OK with another drive on the Mac.DiskWarrior failed to see the disk entirely with either connection, same in Leopard and even Tiger.Could Ubuntu have confused the partition maps or something? Any thoughts on how I might get it running before I give up and restore the backup?
installed Ubuntu 9.10 in an internal SATA drive and used it for quite a while, but yesterday my laptop's graphics card decided to die, and it looks like it will be a full month until I get replacement m/b. Therefore, I bought an external USB SATA Hub for my laptop's drive, but I can't seem to be able to boot ubuntu from this drive. I'm trying to boot with this external usb hub attached to an old P4 machine with USB booting enabled.I get till the grub screen, but as soon as the message "Grub loading" appears, I get a message saying:error: no such partitionand I get a prompt as follows:grub-rescue>I guess grub is trying to boot to a different device name... It's weird, I thought Ubuntu should boot irregardless of which interface I use, be it SATA or USB.

For some reason, every entry below gives me the error "you must load the kernel first" when I try to boot it. I have checked in the grub command line and it appears that grub sees my flash drive as the first drive when booting. This is what my grub.cfg looks like.

I have a Dell Dimension 690 with a LSI raid controller. I just added two 2Tb drives to the 2 160Gb drives that I currently have. The 160Gb drives used to be set up in a redundant raid configuration and are now set up as stand alone drives. The 2Tb drives are redundant raid. I installed Zentyal server software (formally eBox). It seems that the system is starting up OK but on booting I am getting the following errors:

I installed a new hard drive to my system. I use a program called R-Drive image to copy all my os to my new drive. It done a pretty good job too, its an exact copy. I deleted the old one. But obviously now I cant boot. I had a look at the menu.lst file i dont know what to change it to. heres my drive setup,
C: - Windows Vista - Ubuntu
D: - Documents - Swap File
E: - Games
I have managed to get a system going where I have kubuntu installed on a partition of my external hard drive. When the ehd is plugged in, everything works well. I have the option to boot into vista (my main os) or kubuntu. However, I see no reason why it won't let me have some kind of fallback mechanism that would let me boot into vista if the ehd is not found, instead I end up with the grub rescue prompt.
If not then I'm going to have to look at other options, perhaps booting into vista by default unless I hold down escape or whatever other key my bios expects to override, because there will be times that my ehd won't be plugged in. This is the only little niggle, as apart from that everything is working great.
I have installed F11 on a secondary partition on an external hard drive (secondary drive is M:, I have put F11 on X: )
I also said to put the MBR (or maybe it's the grub stuff) on that partition with F11. I used ext3 as my Linux file system type.
But when I boot from that drive or even boot normally, I come back to Windows automatically.
I don't want to mess with my C: drive at all plus I want to keep most of that M: drive away from Linux.
I have two 3 hard drives, one with Linux Mint, one with Fedora, one with Windows. For some reason, I can only choose Mint or Windows in the menu at the start. Also, when I boot on mint, I see my hard drive with Windows:
320 GB Hard Drive: 320 GB Filesystem.
But for the hard drive with Fedora I only see:
1.0 TB Hard Drive: 524 MB Filesystem.
From Mint I can go in this filesystem and there is a folder name Grub, can I take the info there and paste it into Mint's grub ? If so, how ?
I have a new Giada cube with no hard drive, so my plan is to simply run a Linux/MythTV distro called MythDora from a Patriot 8GB USB stick (this Giada does not PXE boot). I am having trouble figuring out exactly how to make this work. Yesterday, although I have forgotten exactly how, I was able to put a MythDora Live image on the stick and boot up. I went through the initial setup, and then, when I was all done, I rebooted, and..it started all over again...as if I was doing it for the first time.
