General :: After Installing BackTrack5 / Booting To HDD Fails To Display GUI

Aug 1, 2011

I'm writing this post from the BT5 Live CD. However, after install and reaching a CLI (on the HDD), when I run startx, my monitor simply displays 'invalid format' (obviously this works fine via the LiveCD)... I've installed Ubuntu and Fedora a few times on a few machines, and have never had any issues with the display... not sure where to start troubleshooting.

General :: Grub All Over Display While Booting With USB

Jan 7, 2010

I am trying to boot linux kernel from a USB stick. I performed following steps:

1. wrote Grub stag1 to MBR of USB with this command on my linux host.
dd if=/boot/grub/stage1 of=/dev/sdb1 bs=512 count=1

2. Mounted the USB and I copied the following files in my USB.
boot/grub/stage1
boot/grub/stage2

3. Plugged in the USB in the the target machine. Rebooted and changed the booting sequence to boot from USB

My problem is that instead of getting a boot prompt, iIam getting GRUB GRUB GRUB all over the display. I googled out for it and found that if we change the auto-detection oh HDD in bios to manual that may solve the issue, but that did not help. If you happen to know that I am following the correct steps and in right order please point me how can I resolve this issue of GRUB.

General :: Boot - Display A Static Image While Debian Is Booting Up?

Aug 19, 2011

I need to show a static image with the logo of our department while Debian boots. Is there any easy way or tool to do this? (Any parameter of the kernel maybe?) It doesn't have to be anything fancy (like a progress bar)... just a plain an simple image.

I've seen many bootsplash projects..but most of them are broken. I tried splashy (which is available on the repo), but by the time it loads, my system is already booted, so I don't really like it. note that I don't have any Xorg server installed.

i installed Ubuntu 9.10 on an external hard-drive according to an online guide i found. The first problem i ran into was that Grub takes ages to load, however, after it's loaded, i am able to choose what OS to start(i have windows vista of my computers hard-drive). The second problem is that i am now unable to start windows vista without having my external hard drive (the one that Ubuntu is installed on) connected to my PC, it just says something like "Loading grub....no such disk". Im really worried that i've done something irriversible.

General :: Wrong Display After Installing GeForce GT 335M

I bought a new laptop 2 months ago, with a GeForce GT 335M VGA and win 7 preinstalled. I installed in parallel Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit but face the following problem When I activate nvidia driver from the "hardware drivers" tab ( it gives me only one choice ,to install :version current" driver ), I get after restarting, my screed divided in 4 quadrants with something like a corridor in the middle ,each quadrant showing a tiny ubuntu log screen Only after uninstalling it or booting in graphics fail safe mode I get a normal screen again but then, google earth e.g runs slowly and complains that it works in open gl mode or something like that.

May be its only that the VGA card is new and there is not yet a proper driver for it? Or should I try some changes in some configuration file? I have tried the advices from [URL] but it didnt help . In win7, the card works fine but ....

General :: Installing Ubuntu 10.10 On A Windows 7 System (Dual Booting) With Radeon X300/X550/X1?

Oct 29, 2010

just like most Linux distributions, will happily co-exist on a hard disk with just about any version of Windows. This is a concept known as dual-booting. Essentially, when you power up your PC you will be presented with a menu which provides the option to boot either Ubuntu Linux or Windows. Obviously you can only run one operating system at a time, but it is worth noting that the files on the Windows partition of your disk drive will be available to you from Ubuntu Linux regardless of whether your windows partition was formatted using NTFS. To day I have installed Latest Windows 7 and Latest Ubuntu 10.10 on my office system (Dual booting). This two operating system which I installed in HP dx 7200 micro towers.

System Information
Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (6.1, Build 7201) (7201.winmain_win7ids.090601-1516)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)

Install :: Display Fails In Opensuse 11.4 / What To Do?

Mar 25, 2011

I have been with opensuse from 10, and I currently run 11.3 on my desktops. My attempt to install 11.4 failed. It produced a display with many tiny rectangles instead of a gui. I guess there is a discrepancy between the times produced by the x and the y display drivers and the times expected by the display hardware. I can't blame it on the display hardware, though, because I switched to another monitor and got the same error. I did the usual tests from the install screen, and there are no errors. If I run the program in fail-safe mode, the display is text only. In this case there is no x-server. I have not observed that in 11.3 fail-safe.

Debian :: Automatically Continue Booting After Fsck Fails?

I've had some problems and questions when installing and configuring Debian, now everything seems very smooth, but still I can't find answer to one question. My machine is headless and I allways use SSH to it. I have several partitions on machine so if one of them fails on booting time with fsck, I need to press CTRL+D combination to continue. In that case I need to go to the machine with monitor and keyboard and press that combination. Is there any way to automatically continue for example after 30 seconds ? Then I could log in to the system and check log files what is wrong. How can I do that ?

Ubuntu :: Booting From USB Memory Stick Fails On Thinkpad T42

Feb 28, 2010

I have a problem booting anything from USB stick on my IBM Thinkpad T42. It used to run normally, I could even install Windows or Linux from it, but now it stopped working. This particular concern is about booting freshly installed Xubuntu version 9.04 off a Kingston 4GB flash stick. I've installed Xubuntu using usb-create program directly from a booted live cd. Installation went fine and all the options in BIOS are setup correctly (I think). In boot menu in BIOS the stick is recognized correctly and + appears in front of it. Stick is selected as primary boot device. BIOS usb support is also enabled.

Now when I power on the computer, it reads something from the stick and stops right after displaying:
SYSLINUX 3.63 Debian-2008=07=15 EBIOS ... etc...
Then nothing happens and the text stays on like this.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Display Booting After Upgrading?

Jun 26, 2010

I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop and have tried booting the ISO from a USB stick and also installing it to my HD with Wubi.Unfortunately my experience hasn't been any better than when I tried Ubuntu 8.10When booting the Live iso from my USB stick, my display goes into sleep mode (IE is receiving no signal) from the momentUbuntu begins booting until eventually the desktop appears several minutes later. If I was the average punter I would probably have assumed nothing was happening and rebooted.

As I have some experience with Linux (barely), I thought to try Ctrl-Alt-F1, which brought the monitor back to life and showed the terminal. As soon as I switched back to the main window (Ctrl-Alt-F8 I think) the display went back into sleep mode.Once it had booted, I did "sudo apt-get update", which worked and then "sudo apt-get upgrade", which did a lot of updates and then sent my monitor back into sleep mode, requiring me to reboot! When I tried to boot the Wubi install, again the display went into sleep mode as soon as Ubuntu started booting but this time the desktop never appeared and after about 5 minutes I rebooted. My motherboard is a Gigabyte MA780G-UD3H and I'm using the onboard HD3200 IGP and a Phenom II X3 720 and 4GB DDR2 1066Mhz RAM.

Ubuntu :: 64 Bit 10.04 On Radeon HD 5750 - Display Fails During Installation

Aug 31, 2010

I just finished building my new machine. I've got windows 7 running just fine on it, but I wanted to dual boot Ubuntu 10.04. I downloaded the 64 bit iso and tried installing it from both a live cd and a usb drive. When I boot from either (cd or usb), I see the Ubuntu loading/boot screen, but after the data is loaded, my display goes black and seems not to be able to find a signal. I assumed initially that it was probably due to the fact that I was connecting to my tv by HDMI cable. I guessed that Ubuntu did not have HDMI drivers for my video card, ATI Radeon HD 5750, by default. Then today, my new monitor arrived and I switched to the DVI output on my video card. I assumed that this would allow me to boot and install. I was wrong. I experienced the same symptoms on my monitor via DVI as I did on my TV via HDMI. why my monitor drops the signal as soon as it leaves the loading/boot screen?

OpenSUSE Install :: Booting From Ext4 Fails - SDA2 Is Not Reiserfs

Feb 14, 2011

I'm migrating my OpenSuse 11.3 (which was update from 11.2, 11.1 ........ ) to a new hard drive. My partitions were reiserfs and in the migration I'm "converting" them to ext4, the conversion process is simple and it works fine for all of them except the root one:
1) I create a new partition on the new hard disk (bigger than the original one)
2) I format it with ext4
3) I copy all the data with cp -a from the original partition to the new one

I already have all the partitions migrated to the second disk, then I have tried to do it with the root partition:
-I've booted with a system rescue CD and I've done !9 2) and 3) with no problems.
-I've edited and changed al entries in fstab and grub conf (menu.lst) to point the new partitions
-I've reinstalled grub and it seemed It will be no problems booting, but

It begins booting, the grub menu appears, It begins booting the kernel, but suddenly:
waiting for /dev/root to appear: OK
fsck.reiserfs -a /dev/sda2
........
mount -o ro,ad,user_xattr -t reiserfs /dev/root /root
and it fails, because sda2 is not reiserfs, but why does it try to mount it as reiserfs if I'm not saying anywhere it is reiserfs?

This is my fstab:
Code:
#/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST3160211AS_6PT0V05Y-part2 / reiserfs acl,user_xattr 1 1
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD5000AADS-00S9B0_WD-WCAV91599607-part2 / ext4 acl,user_xattr 1 1
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD5000AADS-00S9B0_WD-WCAV91599607-part1 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD5000AADS-00S9B0_WD-WCAV91599607-part3 /home ext4 defaults 1 0
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST3500630A_9QG94AT1-part1 /mnt/backup auto noauto, defaults, users, exec .....

I've booted it also with SuperGrub2 disk and the same thing happened, so I think it's not a grub problem but I don't wknow why it tried to mount the root partition as reiserfs.

Plus an old case and PSU and an old 18gb IDE drive, and an old CD-RW drive

I put the CD in and boot the machine. The initial Ubuntu screen comes up ("Ubuntu" with the line of dots below it) for a few seconds, and then it disappears and I see this text:

At that point it hangs and will proceed no further. I've tried this with the latest Mythbuntu Live CD and the latest Ubuntu Desktop Edition Live CD. Both were x64 versions.
