Ubuntu Installation :: Booting From Grub2 LVM In A KVM Guest Fails When Using - Virtual Package

Jun 7, 2010

I switched a working Lucid KVM guest from linux-server to linux-virtual and it could not mount root at boot time and issued a panic instead. Switching back (booted from CD and used "rescue a broken system") revived the VM.

My first guess is that some DM driver module needed for LVM is missing from the linux-virtual package.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Install Virtual Box Guest Additions When Guets Is 10.10?

Nov 16, 2010

I have installed 10.10 as a virtual machine under my 10.04 host installation. I have then attempted to install the guest additions to make it more integrated with the host. When I start the autorun of the guest additions, it tries to compile some programs. This seems to be a feature of the VBox in 10.04 and worked with 10.04 was also the guest. However, with 10.10 as the guest, I get a compile error, specifically this at the end of vboxadd-install.log:

Ubuntu Installation :: Booting 10.04 With GRUB2?

Oct 16, 2010

I have Win 7 in my hard drive (sda) and I installed Ubuntu 10.04 in other hard disk (a usb disk), but when I try to boot my pc from the usb disk (sdb), the grub shell is displayed. No menu is displayed. When I boot Windows 7 from sda, it runs correctly. The problem it's when i wanna boot Ubuntu. I ran bootscript on the live CD and this is what I've obtained:

Code:
Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010
============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================
=> Windows is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda

Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB2 Fails To Load?

Aug 31, 2010

I am a long time ubuntu user (4.10) and have had a fair bit of experience installing ubuntu and the many mishaps along the way.

So after having no internet for a year I decide to try the new 10.04 flavour by ordering the cd from the site.

Installation went well, no hiccups. But when I restarted the comp it went straight to Xp, so I thought I'll just use the SGD to boot the partion anyway and fix this small problem later.

After SGD confused sda with sdb, I figured out that GRUB2 is now the standard boot loader.

So thats where I am lost, I have searched the forums quickly (25 pages or so..) and realise that I am not going to fix this easily or by trial and error.

here's some info

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
WinXP SP3
Intel P4 3.0

Using bcdedit from within windows to edit the boot menuClick Start -> Type Cmd.exe run it in elevated mode (as an administrator) by right clicking it and selecting "Run As Administrator" Inside the console type bcdedit, notice that the ubuntu boot entry is still there, for example i use three o/s , windows 7 professional x64, windows 7 ultimate x64 and Kubuntu and it looks like this

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows Not Booting From GRUB2 After Upgrade?

Jul 18, 2010

My girlfriend upgraded from Karmic 9.10 to Lucid 10.04 when the upgrade became available. She did it from Update Manager as opposed to a clean install.

I have no idea what she did, or how the process works (I installed from a Live CD on my own computer) and ever since she did it, she hasn't been able to boot into Windows XP from GRUB2.

GRUB2 loads up fine, with Ubuntu and Windows listed. It'll boot into Ubuntu with no problems. Selecting Windows will just re-load GRUB2.

I've tried re-installing GRUB2 but that hasn't worked. My lack of imagination means I have no idea what to type in to Google, or the forum search.

Ubuntu Installation :: GeeXboX With 9.10 - Dual Booting And Editing Grub2?

Feb 8, 2010

9.10 uses GRUB2, so the instructions below are obsolete. Is there anyone here who could provide instructions for adding Geexbox into the GRUB2 menu? If you already have a Linux OS installed on your system, you might just want to add a GeeXboX entry to your existing bootloader. This allow you to install GeeXboX very easily. From GeeXboX CD, simply copy the GEEXBOX folder into your Linux / partition (we suppose it to be /dev/sda1 here).

Modify the /boot/grub/menu.lst file to add:
title GeeXboX
root (hd0,1)
kernel /GEEXBOX/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram0 rw rdinit=linuxrc boot=UUID=$my_uuid lang=en keymap=qwerty splash ...
initrd /GEEXBOX/boot/initrd.gz
quiet

Just take are about two things:
- the field root (hd0,1) is to be adapted according to the rest of your GRUB's configuration.
- the $my_uuid value is the unique ID of your partition. Check within your GRUB config file, which value is set for other OS on the same partition or use ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/ to see which uuid matches your partition.

Fedora :: Dual Booting - Grub2 To See F15 Or Be Installed Using Grub2?

Jul 11, 2011

I installed Fedora 15, which was my first real departure from Debian based Linux OSs. I absolutely love the new Gnome 3, and was able to configure F15 to work as I wanted it to. On rebooting I realized that there was no boot loader screen, that F15 just booted and didn't give me a choice as to which OS I wanted to use. Eventually I was able to configure grub to let me see the boot loader and added my old boot loader as a choice. This worked well, maybe not a perfect solution, but it worked. This weekend I installed LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) to another HDD. LMDE uses grub2 and after the install F15 was not recognized.

Two questions: Is there a way for grub2 to see F15? or Can F15 be installed using grub2? I really don't mind re-installing from scratch.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub2 External Hard Drive - Fails And I Get A Grub Rescue

Feb 8, 2010

I've tried to be clever but as usual I didn't think before acting and missed a small detail.

I have recently installed karmic (dual booting with Vista) on my dell xps laptop. The install went fine, I'm very happy with my new OS.

I bought a new Seagate 500GB portable external HDD. I got a bit over-excited and installed karmic on the external drive. This worked fine and I got a lovely (but slow to appear) Grub2 menu showing my vista and both ubuntu options.

My problem is that now, when I unplug the external drive, Grub fails and I get a grub rescue> prompt. So I need the external drive to be plugged in if I want to boot.

It seems I have done something to the grub configuration. I have read around the subject but I am not confident about how best to proceed.

I understand there is an 'advanced' option in the installer which will allow me to choose where to install grub. Presumably I want it on the internal drive so that I can boot without the external one plugged in.

Am I right in thinking I can just pop in my install disk and redo the installation?

If I indicate I want to install Grub on the internal drive, which partition should I aim for?

Will I get a grub option for booting to the external drive?

Will I be able to plug the external drive into a different machine and boot from it?

I haven't done anything with the fresh install on the external drive so I don't mind losing that.

Fedora Servers :: LAMP Package Installation Fails / What To Do?

Mar 7, 2011

I have a desktop running on Fedora 14. I installed LAMP by using scripts for package installation. That works fine. Also, I have a virtual environment (Virtual Machine Manager), in which I installed Fedora 14 as well. I tried to install LAMP by the same scripts and the same packages as on my desktop, but strangely - it does not work.

I figured out that in both cases two instances of httpd.conf are installed, one residing in /etc/httpd/conf/, the other one in /usr/local/apache2/conf. The first one seems to belong to the server that is by default installed together with Fedora 14. The second one is the result from the package installation.

For a reason unknown to me, the second one (/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf) is always activated on my desktop, while the first one (/usr/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf) is activated by default in my virtual computer. I have been able to change the DocumentRoot with succes.

I know how to install LAMP with yum, I have a second virtual computer with LAMP installed by yum, and the whole question is not an urgent one, but... I am just curious... what could have caused the difference? And what would I have to do whenever I would like to use the package installation or vice versa?

Is there a way to continue the installation process afterwards, instead of always trying to reinstall and hoping to find out the name of the failing package?

Debian Installation :: Dpkg-scanpackages Fails When Package Limit Exceeded

Nov 2, 2015

After receiving no response either here or on IRC, I copied 80 package files to a temporary directory and ran dpkg-scanpackages . /dev/null > Packages with the expected result. The curious part is the delay when output redirection is not used: nothing appears until the script completes, when the result is dumped to the screen. It therefore appears that there is an upper limit to the number of packages that the script can handle, somewhere between 80 and 42,474.

Is this an undocumented feature, or just a peculiarity of my system?

I'm new to Debian and wanting to set up a local repository on my work drive. After following instructions online and copying all packages (~43,000) from the DVD set into /work/Debian/8.2/packages/ I ran dpkg-scan-packages as instructed:

Code: Select all# dpkg-scan-packages . /dev/null | gzip -9c > Packages.gz

This produced an empty file. I then ran dpkg-scanpackages with no output redirection expecting to see a flood of text on the screen, but all I got were error messages suggesting that it can see the .deb packages but is not parsing them:

Code: Select allroot@qbx:~# dpkg-scanpackages /work/Debian/8.2/packages
dpkg-deb: error: invalid character ' ' in archive '/work/Debian/8.2/packages/libshhopt1_1.1.7-3_i386.deb' member 'debian-binary' size
dpkg-scanpackages: error: couldn't parse control information from /work/Debian/8.2/packages/libshhopt1_1.1.7-3_i386.deb

[Code] ....

This all seems in accord with the man page, and it's so simple I'm wondering what I'm missing.
