I have a laptop with Windows 7 and Ubuntu installed in seperate partitions. When I boot up the computer I get options to boot either in windows 7 or Ubuntu. Yesterday I updated Ubuntu to 10.4 version. I have been having issues with grub rescue, which was rectified an hour ago. View 1 RepliesI have proftpd set up on my linux home server. As I have a dynamic IP at home, I am using DynDns.org to provide a hostname for me. I have told proftpd to use this address as the MasqueradeAddress, to allow passive FTP connections through my NAT router.
However, whenever I boot my server, proftpd fails to start saying it cannot resolve this address. I assume this is due to the boot order, as something network or DNS related hasn't started up by then and it can't find the address. How should I deal with this problem? Can I get proftpd to do its checking for the address later on? Or can I change the startup order so that proftpd is started as the final item in the boot sequence?
I'm having a strange issue with Filezilla that doesn't affect any other apps.I know my network isnt IPv6 friendly, so I've disabled it in Firefox and in Ubuntu - everything bar Filezilla finds and resolves addresses properly. Filezilla just gives me the responses below, trying to connect to 1.0.0.0:21 for any domain I try to FTP to. If I then go to terminal and do an ftp ftp.asdad.com etc, once terminal has resolved the domain, filezilla works - very odd. how I can stop having to do this step in terminal?

Did a new install of F14 on a T61 Thinkpad w/ Motorola DSL router (ATT supplied). The install was smooth and had no indications of problems.
When I went to use the browser, it showed a functional Fedora website. But if I try to go to goggle or any other web address, the browser complains that it can't resolve the web address.?

I have been using 8.04 for a year & it's been wonderful. Recently I saw the invitation on 'update manager' to upgrade to 10.04 & went ahead wih the download, but when the system tried to reboot the problems started &, I see from the forums, this seems to be a widespread problem. You get as far as UBUNTU & 5 dots then nothing. I have read as much as I can, understood a little but got nowhere so I thought I'd recover my files (hopefully) with the 8.04 CD using photorec & then reinstall my 8.04. Problem is the CD will not boot. I've used 'help' & installed the boot helper but I get the BusyBox message and don't know what command to put in.

I bought a new hard drive (has not arrived yet) and getting ready to install it when it arrives.
My computer/workstation has a number of hard drives installed inside that are all SATA drives.
The boot drive (Ubuntu only, I do not use Windows) is a 500GB USB notebook drive installed in an external case.
I have an 80GB internal drive with an old Ubuntu install. I decided to remove that drive (pulled the drive) to make room for the new drive.
But the new drive did not come in the mail, so I put the computer back together without the old 80GB drive (SATA 0).
To my surprise it would not boot to the 500GB USB drive?

Removed every drive but the USB 500GB drive and the CD from the BIOS boot menu. Made the USB THE drive to boot to.

Using a 10.10 LiveCD I can access that 500GB drive.
Thus, it is hooked up and works but does not boot. Gparted says there is a BOOT FLAG in the Linux partition of the 500GB drive.
My only conclusion was I altered the boot order for GRUB so I put the 80GB drive back in the computer.
I did not edit GRUB in any way, I simply physically pulled the drive when the computer was off.

I am building a 10.04.1LTS server. I am putting the /root filesystem into a Software RAID1 partition. I want to keeo my /boot partition outside of RAID.Is there a way to have a boot partition on both sda and sdb so if one drive fails the second boot partition will work away - or should this be kept in with RAID also.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI was upgrading our lab's dhcp server to Lucid and it totally died. I have it running on a Debian recovery cd right now. I ran into a bug in gtk which I seem to have fixed, but now I have more serious errors. If I boot without a CD, I get dumped into a busybox shell after the machine fails to boot. From the live CD, I tried dist-upgrading again and it dies trying to build and install rsyslog with a broken pipe error. I am at a loss as to what to do from here short of reinstalling (which is the last option as this server has a lot of custom configs on it)

I am a total noob, and have installed Xubuntu as a sort of dual-boot backup on my winXP machine.
I've never used Ubuntu before and I was having some trouble booting. I've tried both installing with Wubi and also the full installation, but using either method I get the same result:
After selecting Ubuntu on the boot menu it says its finishing installing and then my laptop precedes to practically "shut off." The screen goes blank and the light on my optical mouse goes off. Only the fan runs and it begins to go very quickly. At one point I even left it on for several hours like this to make sure I wasn't being too impatient, but nothing happened.
Currently I have a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6033 with an i7 processor and 4GB of ram. I also only have one hard drive which may have complicated my problem.

I enter this from the enchanting Ubuntu 11.04, which I installed some time ago. It loads up happily from the top of my grub 1.99 menu.
The grub menu had the following entries:

All of these menu options loaded their kernels correctly from the grub menu.

No. In fact, when I finally needed XP, I selected its menu option in grub 2, and the menu disappeared.
In its place, a single, blinking caret appeared. Just blinking, and blinking. Taunting me. Threatening me with the prospect that it might take away my pirated starcraft games forever. Windows had run perfectly before.
After installing Ubuntu on a hardrive that already had XP on it, when I get to the part where I choose what OS to boot, and I select XP, all I see is the Windows loading screen for about 3 seconds, then the pc shuts down and restarts itself, and goes back to the OS options code...
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've had a lot of success over the past year with Ubuntu 10.4; however, recently I've been experiencing nothing but problems. It all started with an upgrade a month ago that caused me to experience a boot error. Now every time I re-install the system, I will have a random boot error. I have been trying to install the system on a friend's computer and getting the same thing. I've tried a different download and burned different discs, but I am still experiencing problems with the system having a boot error. Sometimes it is immediate after installation and other times it might boot fine for a day or two and then suddenly it will no longer boot. Is there some kind of bug with 10.4 now? I never, never had this hard of a time with Ubuntu. I've installed it on several computers for myself and other people.

On the plus side, Ubuntu 9.04 is unaffected once I had Knoppix 6.02 LiveCD correct the boot manager, so it can boot Ubuntu.
My Internet connection works fine when I boot Ubuntu with the CD and it does not work when I boot from the Hard Drive. It was working then it stopped. I tried to diagnose the problem but I am not familiar with Linux.
I opened a Terminal window and entered ipconfig (don't laugh ... sadly, i've been in Windows for too long) ipconfig was something that could not be found in my terminal window so i exited.
Next it was System->Administration->Network Tools. I ping'd www.yahoo.com and it said it could not find it. hmmmm. Let's see if restarting the system will fix it.
I did a shutdown and when it came back up; same problem. Ok, i really didn't think it would magically correct itself; this is Linux after all. Windows? Well sometimes you can fix things by turning them off and on. Next, another shutdown and I rebooted with the CD instead of the Hard drive and here I sit entering this help question in.
I am guessing that a file or setting got changed in /etc/someplace and I am not even sure of that. Can anyone point me in the correct direction? I am assuming that there is a setting which is correct in the CD version that is not not correct in the HD version and somehow i need to find what it is and synchronize it with the CD version.
I downloaded ubuntu 10.10 iso, made CD, installed as dual-boot with win Vista home premium and used it for a week to access the 'net and email. Yesterday, while deleting an email, the "d" key stuck down while I was issuing <CTRL>D and the cursor froze. I then rebooted by using the reset button and saw many lines of text including "kernel panic". so I reset and booted into 'repair boot'. Again, many lines of text which stop at the same place if I try this twice.
I assume I've fried my ubuntu install and would like to fix or re-install it. When I installed it, I let the [wubi?] installer make decisions except choice of drive because it picked the external, USB drive. It appears to've used about 80 G on internal drive D: I could boot from the distro CD and see if it will re-install but I'm concerned that I may not fix my problem or that it may mess up my windows installation.
I'm trying to dual boot 9.10 with Vista on an HP Pavilion Slimline (AMD64). I've tried both booting from a disk and using Wubi, and neither has worked. Booting from the disk takes me through the screen where I can choose to try Ubuntu without installing, but after selecting that, the desktop didn't load, the screen just went to black.
I decided to try Wubi, and it went well enough. Everything in windows worked, and upon rebooting, it was able to finish checking the installation. After one more reboot, I selected Ubuntu from the Windows boot manager, and then the grub command prompt appears. I can't seem do anything after that except reboot.
I have no idea what's going on with this computer.
I have an Acer Aspire 5810T which came with Windows Vista. I prefer Ubuntu but I need some windows applications so I dual-booted Vista and 9.10.
There was a few minor problems with the Vista side but I didn't use it enough to care. A few weeks ago Vista would not open some programs and others would shut down automaticly and some would open but not connect to the internet like they should. This happened on my previous laptop and when I used the system recovery discs to restore the computer all those issues were gone.
I used the recover discs to restore everything to its original factory settings, it said everything was successful so I restarted. My computer got to the grub menu but when I chose Windows Vista as my operating system it goes black for half a second then returns to the grub menu.
I can get into Ubuntu fine, and I can see the Vista files when I mount the drive to Ubuntu. When I look at the files everything is the way it should be if I had restored it but I can't boot it..
I've just updated (through Update Manager) to the latest Linux kernel, (2.6.32-23, I believe) and now Ubuntu will not boot to the desktop.
It gets as far as finishing fsck on all of the drives, and successfully completes checks if necessary, but after that it just comes to a halt and won't proceed any further.
The last messages on screen when it freezes are (ignoring the fsck success reports):

init: ureadahead-other main process (970) terminated with status 4
These messages were appearing before, though.
The only way I seem to be able to boot now is by selecting the previous kernel (2.6.32-22) in GRUB.
Is anyone else seeing this, and does anyone know how to fix this Ubuntu update problem?
I've seen similar posts but nothing that's been able to solve my issue.

Upon boot I can see the Ubuntu splash with the 6 white progress dots. No GDM or X11 session is started automatically with the progress screen simply remaining on display.
Temporary Solution
Stop GDM on vty7 and start it on vty1 or anywhere else for that matter - just not vty7 as this won't work. code...

Well i have two hard drives, i used wubi on windows (which is on my c: drive) to put ubuntu 10.10 on my d: drive. Everything was running smoothly until the update manager uptated ubuntu. When the installation was completed, i was told to restart. So i did. When it restarted, nothing happened. My computer froze and i cant access windows or ubuntu, and i cant change anything.
My old computer started randomly rebooting so I went out yesterday and bought a new one. It's a standard Intel 64 architecture with 2gb ram etc.The old computer was running Lenny however I'm happy to upgrade, so I just went to the main Debian download site and downloaded:debian-6.0.1a-ia64.netinst.iso (this didn't work, apparently ia64 is for itanium and my machine is definitely not that), so I downloaded: debian-6.0.1a-amd64-netinst.iso, burnt the CD and ran the install. First time through I had a power failure.
Second time through (a complete fresh start - new partition and everything) it went all the way through to completion and reboot.Clicked 'Continue' to reboot and the machine reset as it would normally and the Grub loader started okay, prompted for the "Debian amd64" standard boot image, selected that and the first 6 lines appeared normal, then the messages wizzed by so fast that only superman could read them. Then they stop - here is some of the content...

Is the amd64 the wrong image? Should I try i386? Is it a blip and I should just rerun the entire install again?
I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop and it was running all smoothly, but all of a sudden when i booted, the only thing i could see were the desktop wallpaper and mouse icon, no panels, no shortcuts, nothing, meaning i can do pretty much nothing, i can move the mouse but can't click anything, the last thing i did was download and goof around with compiz and i was too happy because it worked and looked really great, even though i didn't want to activate restricted drivers for my ATI video chipset, but again, it was working cool and then boom, only wallpaper and mouse, nothing more

I just updated my kernel to kernel-2.6.29.5-191.fc11.x86_64 on my x64 system, after I reboot my machine, the Fedora loading bar comes up and finishes but then no gui comes up. I attempt to issue commands at the hanging prompt that comes up but nothing happens. I can boot into my older kernel just fine but not the updated one.
What can I do?
I've just updated my desktop to F13 using preupgrade but now grub won't boot it. The upgrade seemed to go OK, and none of the disk partitions should have changed as far as I'm aware, but now I get an error

I have recently created a KDE 4 desktop using suse studio, it boots up fine on my machine, but doesn't shutdown!!
On my mum's laptop, which I will be using it most on, (it's windoez) it won't start KDE 4 at all! I can use the console, but I wanted to impress her with the amazing GUI and Compiz. And you can't make presentations or browse the web in a console, can you?
And sudo poweroff and sudo shutdown -h now don't work either!
