Is it possible to install ubuntu 10.04 on a second partition without overwriting the windows7 bootloader and boot it using grub on a usb stick?

I would be happy with just the second option as I could fix mbr if I have to, I just don't want it to easily visible that linux is installed as well as windows.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 On HP Pavilion Preloaded With Windows7?

Apr 23, 2010

Recently I tried to install openSUSE 11.2 on my HP Pavilion dv6-2125tx notebook PC which comes preloaded with Windows7. I used a DVD to install the openSUSE. Before installation, I created partitions on my hard drive for root, /home and swap by shrinking the C volume. This is the only way to create partitions on my laptop. I used NTFS filesystem during format of these partitions. During installation, the first error message that appeared was YaST error saying that it could not format the partitions though it was allowing me to set mount points and filesystems for the partitions I had created. The next problem was swap. I was not able to see the mount point and F (for format) for the swap partition. However when I continued by ignoring the warning for swap there was a partition for swap and it was the same partition I wanted to have for swap. So, I clicked the Install button. The next problem was grub error 17: cannot mount the partition. And then when I continued ignoring this too, the computer did not get any of the OSes saying that BOOTMGR (BOOT MANAGER) is missing. I had no options left but to recover it using recovery disks of my laptop.I searched a bit on the internet and found that grub error 17 happens if the corresponding partition exists but the filesystem is not recognized by the GRUB.

I concluded that it was happening bacause YaST was unable to format any of partitions with the filesystem selected. So in my next attempt, I formatted the partitions in FAT32 filesystem in Windows which I think GRUB can recognize. I did that because even if YAST would be unable to format the partition the filesystem could be recognized by GRUB.And I think that happened but I got a new error this time. The grub error 22.Now I don't know what to do. One thing that I am expecting is that my hard drive cannot be partitioned in the correct way for linux. I can only shrink the volume and create logical partitions only from one dynamic partition c. And that may be the reason YaST could not format the partitions in the correct filesystem and inturn the grub error is happening.

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Access Encrypted Partition With The YaST Practitioner Tool

Feb 13, 2010

I encrypted my home partition with the YaST Partitioner tool, but now I can't access it anymore. After I encrypted it I rebooted the machine and thought that it would prompt me a password field to access the partition, but now I can't access it at all. I tried "mount -t ext4 /dev/sda7 /home" which gives me that error after I entered the password: "mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda7, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so"

The info I get from "dmesg | tail" is: "EXT4-fs (sda7): VFS: Can't find ext4 filesystem" Before I encrypted it I converted the /home partition from ext3 to ext4 without any problems and it worked properly. After playing around with it I also discovered that /dev/sda7 got wiped out of /etc/fstab, but I entered it again.

OpenSUSE Install :: View/access/read The Files From Data Partition?

Dec 1, 2010

I am a total noob when it comes to opensuse. I just read the reviews and comments from forums taht's why I wanna try this alternative. I have 1 physical drive that has two partitions. 1 is dedicated for my windows OS (20 GB) and the other for my data (approx. 100GB).

How can I install opensuse 11.3 to just 1 partition (20GB) and leave my data partition (approx. 100GB) as it is? Can I still view/access/read the files from my data partition after I have successfully install opensuse 11.3 to my Os partition?

Ubuntu Installation :: Fix Non Booting Windows7 Partition After I Installed 10.04?

Apr 17, 2010

I installed 10.04 and Grub won't boot into Windows7. I attempted to fix the problem through several different methods and nothing worked and I fear I made the booting problem worse than it was to begin with. I can boot into Ubuntu just fine, just not Windows7. Black screen with a cursor upper left hand. Windows7 repair disk does not help and using Windows7 command line repairs did nothing.

So here is an idea I came up with: Is there any way I can back up the Windows partition exactly the way it is, reinstall Windows7, and then somehow lay down all that information directly over the install to make it exactly like it was?

I doubt it is that simple, but is that possible? Like basically unhiding all the hidden files, copying them into a folder on my Ubuntu installation, reinstalling Windows7 and just copying them all back?

I am new to installing Ubuntu and cannot get it to install on my desktop windows7 and can't see any obvious reasons why it won't work.

The Ubuntu home page led me to believe that the wubu download would be the easiest way to download and install ubuntu side-by-side with my windows7, but I'm not finding that to be true. Know I have now tried to download that windows ubuntu installer 3 times now and it fails every time.

I have complete admin rights to my desktop. After over an hour of dowloading I keep getting message "Permission denied" and it refers me to the log file.

The last few lines of the log files states:

Ubuntu Installation :: Default Partition Installation Overwrites Windows7?

Feb 2, 2011

Sorry my previous question wasn't that informative so adding more. I had windows partition and free partition for Linux installation. I got installed windows7 and it installed fine, When I tried installing Ubuntu, I remember selected default options. I gave me default option as it clearly said "1. If you have another operating system (e.g. Windows XP) and you want a dual boot system, select the first option: "Install them side by side, choosing between them at each startup." I thought it would keep Windows as it is and I hit proceeded for installation.

first option: "Install them side by side, choosing between them at each startup." refer [URL] step #4. At the end I am disappointed that I cannot see Windows boot option (Dual boot) It just gives Ubuntu option. I kept 50 GB free space for Ubuntu. Is there any option to recover/switch to windows booting? Or I have lost Windows installation overwritten by Ubuntu?

OpenSUSE Install :: Deleting One Logical Partition Changes Partition Numbers Of The Others?

Oct 9, 2010

I started withsda1 windows restore sda3 extendedsda5 swapsda6 /mandrivasda7 /SUSE 11.3
sda8 /SUSE 11.2I then made some changes with gparted (from PartedMagic 5.5) to create an ntfs partition to simulate a condition where someone may want to delete that partition and use the free space for linux. I then deleted that partition, sda2 then sda5 (swap) and taking some screenshots, went about resizing partitions to use that free space and then recreate swap. the intention being to create a basic guide on how to go about this.I have previously only had my swap at the end of the extended partition, deleting itand recreating it later had caused little trouble.I realize that a resize/move operation would have been a better choice. What I was not expecting was the partition number changes that occurred.

Code:
root@PartedMagic:~# fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes

[code]...

Fedora Installation :: Boot Windows7 After Install 12

Dec 31, 2009

I have a laptop that has multiple partitions and was running Windows 7. I installed Fedora in a area of free space in the extended area, thus in a logical partition. Fedora is now running on the laptop. But, at boot time, there is NO BOOT MANAGER. The laptop just boots straight away to Fedora.

I know this has probably been covered, but is there an "official" procedure or document available to us newbies that I can use to recover my system such that it boots all of my installed bootable partitions (including Windows7)?

OpenSUSE Install :: Trying To Add Partition With XP Partition Mgr

Apr 21, 2010

I have little experience with Linux, took a course, read bulletproof linux. That was several years ago. My friend convinced me to set up opensuse kde with him, so I did.Set it up a few days ago on my semi-new Hitachi 1TB drive. XP was installed first, cloned from the previous (failing) drive, and took me forever to get it working. It was set up as:

Hitachi HD:
1st part: XP (250gb)
2nd Part: opensuse system
3rd Part: opensuse swap
4th Part: opensuse data

(2/3 may be swapped)
I still had 600GB unpartitioned and went to add a new 250GB partition via windows xp disk manger.Next thing I know, disk manager freezes and errors. I reboot for other reasons, and am greeted by grub (never used it before) stating ..well stating nothing.I tried the opensuse install DVD repair option and got corrupted video at first. Then I tried safe settings for booting the installer.I'm now in the YaST2 repair manager.I tried to recover partitions, but it's locked to scan only Partition 1, which is my XP partition. It says no valid linux root partitions exist.

I also tried loading the linux root partition with grub (didn't know the namescheme for the HD's, but I think it's devsda for HD0), no dice. I can't seem to find any hard drives through grub, but I'm unfamiliar with it.My goal is to get my xp back up and running. My guess is that XP tried to edit the partition table and screwed up something. The partition listing through YaST2 partmanager shows all my partitions.A good walkthrough would be great too, but at the moment I'm just going Really? It was that easy to annihilate all my bootable systems? I could also nuke the linux partition and use XP's recovery console and fixboot, then worry about the linux later. I haven't gotten it set up completely yet.
