I installed the latest version...Everything works like a charm. I have Windows Home Server 2003 running and would like to access all of my folders. How can i setup OPENSUSE to find/access my Windows Home Server 2003. Can you help me with this. Just to let you know. Am i missing something so i can access them locally.

OpenSuse version 11.2 There are twelve workstations from which users will login using the NIS authentication. I have succeeded in setting up NI server. However login fails as the home directory is not accessible.
I have a hardisk shared on my windows machine. And I would like to be able to access this on my opensuse notebook. Just cant figure it out. Dont have much experience in opensuse. I just need to know the best way to do this. Also, can opensuse read/write NTFS? Also I have a printer on my moms machine that runs XP home. The printer is shared I would like to be able to print but its no biggie. It some type of HP 3 in 1. I just wnat it to print, I dont care about the scanner and stuff.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've recently setup a custom home server running openSUSE 11.3 64-bit in terminal mode. I've since successfully setup and configured it to act as an iSCSI target using the iscsitarget package and the corresponding kernel module, along with the YaST module for the configuration. Prior to setting up my hard drive accordingly, however, I noticed that when I ran 'zypper up' in a terminal I got the following:

At the time I accepted, and found later that it removed the setup I had, meaning I had to start over. However when I ran YaST in a terminal it then wanted to re-install the iscsitarget package, which subsequently removed the tgt package, and so this continued for a bit. (Thankfully no actual data was stored on the target at this stage .) For the time being I've locked the iscsitarget package and the kernel module to prevent zypper from wanting to remove it and install tgt instead since I now have my target working as I want.
The question I have is why zypper was trying to remove iscsitarget and install tgt, and yet the corresponding YaST module was wanting to do the opposite. Is tgt considered a better option by the openSUSE developers, in some way, for setting up an iSCSI target? Is iscsitarget development/availability being ceased by them in favour of tgt? Is there something else I'm missing? Neither of these packages seems old to me: the latest version of iscsitarget was released on SourceForge last July, while tgt was only updated this month.
I am trying to connect to a Windows 7 PC through Samba, and while samba can find the Windows 7 PC, it cannot access it, asking for a username and password instead. However, I can access the another Windows XP share perfectly fine.
View 2 Replies View Relateda friend of mine is doing a small website-project in school (group of ~6 people). They want to use git as VCS and need acces to a server. I have an account on the server from university, but - of course - no root access.
I could create private/public keys for them, to SSH into my account, but I don't want them to have this power I found 'git-shell', which seems to be used for restricted access with git (although I'm not sure whether I understood the functionality).
My question is: Is it possible to configure SSH keys in that way, that the server runs them (and only them) in git-shell in a specified directory (using ~/.ssh/{config,authorized_keys})?
So that they can
- log in with their SSH key
- use git, execute scripts etc.
- use git push/pull from their private+school PC
- work only in a specific directory (like chroot) eg. ~/web-project/

right now, my machine runs ubuntu 10.10 due to work issue, i need to use windows server 2008 R2 (its a windows exclusive company) but i never used any of the active directory or anything from the windows server (only experience with windows is visual studio and those GAMES!), so i figure i need to practice a bit on my own b4 starting the job and just at the same time I found out as a univ student i get it for free! And plus, I am finding opensuse a better option for me than ubuntu So im wondering what i should do regarding these 2 systems here s some option
1). Install openSuse 11.4, and install VirtualBox and use windows server 2008 R2 on vbox
2). Install windows server 2008 R2 and then install openSuse alongside with it
3). Install windows server 2008 R2 and install openSuse in virtualBox
I have been using linux as my primary OS for more than a year now and I rlly need it for both school and my own entertainment. So wondering which option would best work out for me
wat are your opinions? PS: my machine is about 2 years ago a Dell laptop, with core 2 duo p8700 (2.53ghz) 4GB ram, and nvidia gfx, which even tho is still fast, but isnt rlly that snappy when it comes to virtualization even running xp in a virtual machine is quite laggy at times :S
i work in an office with individual p/c's (all with windows xp) connected to a windows server. i have installed opensuse 11.2 on my work's p/c (as a dual boot) but have no idea what to do so that i can access files on the windows server. can some kind person point me in the right direction.

I have tried several different programs and none seem to work. Go figure. Anyone know of any recovery disks for windows xp that can be booted from a USB?

Now I installed from the Live-CD and everything went fine, only problem came after the installation when I noticed GRUB didn't find windows at all.
Now I did fdisk -l and here's the result:

I am dual booting OpenSUSE and Windows 7 Pro x64. Each OS is installed on a separate 1Tb hard drive. One question that I have tried to Google for a solution with no success is, how do you access ext4 from Windows? Shortly after I installed OpenSUSE, my OpenSUSE hard drive "vanished" from Windows 7. aturally, I can access all my hard drives from OpenSUSE, which does support the NTFS. I am quite sure that I am not the only person who has this problem as I know that dual booting Linux and Windows is quite common.

I managed to get it working in 11.2 but 11.3 is giving me some trouble.I am able to access the printers and use them but I have to enter my network credentials each time I print. In 11.2 I was able to "save" my username/password and was not required to do this. Are there any Samba packages I need to add in addition to the basic ones? There seems to be a lack of documentation on this particular subject, most is concerning Windows clients printing on Linux print servers.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'd like to reinstall openSUSE 11.3 on a pc and would like to preserve the /home partition. The current partiton structure is
sda1 /boot
sda2 /swap
sda3 /extended partition
sda4 /
sda5 /home
When the installer gets to the point to set up the partitions it offers something like
sda1 /
sda2 /swap
sda3 /home
I'm not sure which option to take now. I assume I choose the option to edit the partitions but I'm not clear how to preserve the /home as it's now got a different partition number or does that no matter as long as I choose not to format it? Also, to replicate the original partition structure I'd need to delete the partitions and add them in the correct order but would that destroy the /home?I'm a bit confused with how it will work.
I am wondering if there is a good application that would allow me to setup a webcam at home, so that if I am at work, I could launch an application my android phone (or via a web browser) that would allow me to view & HEAR what is going on. It would also be neat if the application running on the home computer could be smart... ie: start recording if there was a loud noise & send an email alert ... or similar I havent purchased any hardware... but was thinking a (USB) for the main and an additional wireless (w/infrared) for being able to move around.

I set up Evolution, and it's working, but sometimes Gnome wants me to allow it to access the default keyring to get the email password. It takes 3 cancel-deny tries to finally dismiss this dialog box, after which Evolution is working fine. I see that this is not an Evolution thing. Other users report the same thing in VINO, and on wireless access. The GNOME forum seems to think there is a bug when accessing severs, and has a bug and milestone. Some other distros have the same problem.
One user says that they were able to Delete the default keyring (which must have had an unknown default password) and then create a New default keyring with thier own password. This seems to have solved that user's problem. However there were no instructions on how to do it. I think someone else was able to just stop the default keyring daemon. That would work too, although it's not as elegant. I'm now unable to find instructions.
I just had one hell of an experience trying to get openSUSE 11.2 to run on VMware server 2.0 on a Windows XP host. I am posting some instructions on how I finally got things working.
1) Download the openSuse iso image (and add-on CD if needed)
2) Download and install the VMWare server
3) Before you try to start the server console, you will need to configure the web access to allow you to log on. go to press Start->Programs->VMware->VMWare web access->Configure Tomcat
4) on the logon tab check logon as: option
5) add your account there and set the password
6) Now in your web browser (I use firefox) access the console via: [url] [url]
7) Before you start to create a virtual machine, you will want to set up the server to have access to your iso's. The server will only allow VM's access to specific directories through "datastores". You can either move the iso images to what has been specified as the default datastore... or create another datastore that points to the where you have the iso's.
8) Now we can create our virtual machine. This is simple, just press the button and follow the prompts.
a) at some point it will ask about an CD-Rom, you will want to use your suse DVD iso image. Select the option and then navigate the datastore that contains the image. Once found click and continue.
b) Network interface has 3 choices:
Bridged - the virtual machine will appear on the network as any other computer. Allows the VM to host server applications. User needs to have control over the network to ensure DHCP requests are handled (or static IP is assigned).
NAT - VMWare server will manage a virtual router, the VM is then connected to this router. On this router, the hosts internet is used as the WAN. Users do not have to have control of the network, but will have to setup port forwarding in VMWare to host server applications
Host Only - This means that the virtual machine can only talk to the host. The only way to get networking is to have a proxy through the host machine. This is setup on the host independent of VMWare. Users do not need control of the network, but control over the host. I doubt you could host server applications though.
9) With the VM created we can start it up. We can open a window to it through the console tab of the VMWare server console. When I first started it, it was stuck looking for an OS once the console finally rendered the graphics. A reset, an F2 at the post and selecting the appropriate boot media for boot got the installation started.
10) Install Suse as you would any other suse installation. I added a separate partition for swap, but kept the rest on one big one. Others may still want to maintain the separation of home and root
11) ---- Important Error/Solution ----
Once the installation has completed many will notice that the mouse or keyboard does not work! This was the source of my biggest head-ache. Some may think it was a problem with VMWare tools... I tried that to fix that and found the tools were working properly.
I am trying to install openSuse 11.2 from netinstall disk into a vmware virtual machine under vmware server 2 (free edition). The installation process starts ok, but later i receive a warning indicating that the opensuse repository can not be found. (download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.2/repo/oss /)I have checked the network setup and works perfectly, also i can ping download.opensuse.org from console successfully.

I have an opensuse 11.3 install which I want to set up as a network boot server to install Solaris 10 on a Sun Ultra 10 client. According to what I've read, this requires rarpd and tftpd which I've set up on opensuse, but also bootparamd which I can't find for 11.3. It seems it was last included with opensuse 9.2. Does anyone know if it's available, if I could use the suse 9.2 version, or any alternative?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed opensuse in my laptop in which I already installed opensuse.Now the grub shows first, on boot up. I want to set windows bootloader in front. In order to do that, I did the following,
1. unmount all devices "umount /windows/*"
2. my hard disk partition:- see the link cfdisk /dev/sda | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
3. mount the C drive (where win 7 is installed)
"ntfs-3g /dev/sda3 /mnt/windows -o force "
4. dd if=/dev/sda8 of=/mnt/windows/suse.bin bs=512 count=1
5. kwrite /mnt/windows/boot.ini and write the following,
[boot loader]
timeout=15
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)c: suse.bin
[operating systems]
c: suse.bin="openSUSE"
6. change the boot to sda3 using "sudo /sbin/cfdisk /dev/sda"
Problem is,
now windows bootloader shows when boot up, showing two options,
windows
openSUSE
windows option works normally; but openSUSE option doesn't work.
I tried to search the internet to find out the documentation for setting up rsh on my opensuse 11.1 but was unable to find one. So i 'm posting this to help others. I know it is preferrable to use ssh instead of rsh but oracle requires use of rsh. So please dont get back to me saying "use ssh".Note to moderator: I tried to add this to "how to" section but in vain due to "no permissions error".
View 5 Replies View RelatedI want to dual boot openSUSE 11.2 and Windows 7. I already have Windows 7 installed but I have encountered multiple issues in the past with trying to make dual boots. Usually when I install Linux, GRUB decides it wants to go into world domination mode, and "breaks" my Windows installation. I have reason to believe this is because the distros I use come with legacy GRUB, (v0.97) and for some odd reason it lacks commands such as "update-grub" etc. This means I cannot add Windows 7 to the boot menu without going into extreme complications, which have NEVER, I repeat NEVER succeeded. When I boot the Windows drive directly, I get some error about GRUB not finding the device, and it puts me into a grub rescue command line. Now I am no expert in this field at all, but wouldn't that mean that GRUB wrote itself to the MBR of...oh I don't know, ALL of my hard drives? I really want to install openSUSE 11.2, but from bad experience I am really put off as I know that it ships with legacy GRUB v0.97.I am also running Fedora 13 at the moment, I have quite an experimental dual boot running..been trying to get GRUB 2 for hours now, it is definitely there but no commands work, "upgrade-grub-from-legacy" and "update-grub" return with command not found. I've heard this is just a bug but can anybody confirm that there will definitely be a way for me to "fix" my windows installation after it gets "broken" by GRUB?Second idea, unplug my windows hard drive while openSUSE installs?

Can someone explain me how to use a partition from the 320 IDE to install openSuse, and how to setup grub so I wouldn't have any problems booting to Windows?
