The default partition manager which OpenSUSE DVD 11.4 uses (Expert Partitioner) is not creating any logic partition with / mount because another system is already using it, is there anyway to fix this?

When i install, the partition manager wont allow me to shrink the windows partition to fit ubuntu in, and when i go to gparted to do it manually, it says that there are damaged sectors. is there a way to force ubuntu to install?

I upgraded opensuse to its latest version. After the upgrade I can not any more mount my remote folder.I contacted network administrator and informed that there was no change in the network operation.

I surely installed linux (now on opensuse 11.4) as quickly as possible. mounting this hidden recovery partition under linux? All I can see is this from "fdisk -l"printout:

I'm having some problems with a hosted openSUSE 11.2 server. It was running fine until I did a "zypper up" to apply patches. This included a kernel update.
On reboot the root partition does not mount the / partition giving the following error:
Unrecognized mount option "defaults.noatime", or missing value mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/md2.
Through an Ubuntu rescue disk (this is what Hetzner provides) the disk can be mounted without problems.
( I installed a fresh openSUSE 11.2 with a similar configuration and got the same results after the update)
The server is a hosted installation from Hetzner in Germany with just the basics for LAMP setup.
The disk setup is as follows using software raid1:
swap /dev/md0 (/dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1)
/boot /dev/md1 (/dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2)
/ /dev/md2 (/dev/sda3 /dev/sdb3)
I would like to ask you if there is a robust way to mount as a drive a ext4 partition inside windows 7 and if it is possible to use it also to storing window's 7 data.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just looked at the "posting permissions" and unfortunately I'm unable to insert the screen copy of the kde manager's representation of the goal I want to hit.I got a dual boot system with 4 hard disks and grub installed on /dev/sdd1. Windows xp sp2 (only used for professional audio tools, don't whip me ^^) is installed on /dev/sdc1. The disk sdc is partitioned with the following settings:

When I partitioned the disk I was believing 4 Go were sufficient for windows xp but after years I realized that many applications were using the C: by default (no way to change it thru regedit or another workaround, hard-coding probably) installing stuffs and under windows this is impossible to use such blessed things like the unix's symbolic links !So right now I'm a little tight with the remaining space to work with windows xp. (Of course the swap file has been moved to another partition since the first day I installed xp...)
I have is to use the 7Go of unused space on this disk to size up the /dev/sdc1 partition. When using kde partition manager I noticed that there is no way to use the unused disk space to size up /dev/sdc1 directly.Do you think if I create a partition with the 7 Go of unused space that there is a way to size up /dev/sdc1 without messing up the bootloader ? I don't think GRUB matters about the new partition, it should get the /dev/sdc7 entry. For the backup there is no problem this partition is completely backed up every two weeks (as an image) so the datas may not be lost as a real catastrophic... but if there is danger for the other partitions... that's will be more annoying... but solvable ^^
Once partitioned I believe that there will be a way to "merge" the /dev/sdc1 and /dev/sdc7 partitions and then I would enjoy a new xp partition with 7Gb of free space (it would change from my actual 300Mb !!).Technically it would be possible this is just a question of chaining the different blocks each others and refer to the new space added.The last block in /dev/sdc1 would point to the first block that starts /dev/sdc7 and "that's all"... and /dev/sdc7 would disappear as a partition.
I was installing opensuse 11.2 in parallel with windows xp.but during installation suddenly power has gone and after that opensuse is giving me the error message corrupt partition.i am also not able to login in xp. so I decide to reinstall windows, I got the error saying "invalid partition table" after the first restart of windows xp installation.
I tried to use windows system recovery console and committing fixmbr and fixboot commands, but didn't work.
i have 2 window partition(1 for windows and 1 for data).i do,nt want to format 2,nd partition.
How can I installed windows?My plan was first to install windows xp, then opensuse again.

sda8 /SUSE 11.2I then made some changes with gparted (from PartedMagic 5.5) to create an ntfs partition to simulate a condition where someone may want to delete that partition and use the free space for linux. I then deleted that partition, sda2 then sda5 (swap) and taking some screenshots, went about resizing partitions to use that free space and then recreate swap. the intention being to create a basic guide on how to go about this.I have previously only had my swap at the end of the extended partition, deleting itand recreating it later had caused little trouble.I realize that a resize/move operation would have been a better choice.What I was not expecting was the partition number changes that occurred.

I have come across the following statement: " When a FAT32 partition is mounted at '/media/windows', all access to '/media/windows' and everything below it is transparently handled by the Linux kernel using the 'vfat' module. Applications need not know they're dealing with anything else. However, mounting a partition at a location inside of another mounted partition is unpredictable, unstable, and generally a bad idea. "
Is it correct? Most of my partitions are mounted on /home, which is on a separate partition; and I have one "level 3" partition. I have been using Ubuntu for nearly three years so far with no problems (except for /home losing it's format once).
I have around 30gb of free space in my partition table immediately before the Linux partition. I want to resize my linux partition to take up this space.
I tried booting with live cd, sucessfully umounted the hard drive but found I could not resize the partition. On clicking the 'edit size' button, partition manager recognised the free space before the partition but when i reduced this, the 'ok' button was greyed out. (it was not greyed out for the windows partition so I could, in theory, increase the windows partition to take up the free space but this is not what i wanted to do).
I am pretty sure that I had managed to unmount the drive correctly as the padlock symbol had dissapeared (I took the attached screenshot, which does show the lock symbol, after rebooting into my normal system).
Anyone got any ideas as to why it wont allow this? There is no reason why i can resize the partition to take up the free space BEFORE it is there?
I have a pendrive formatted with NSS. It have important info and I need it. I can mount this drive with Open Suse?

My friend convinced me to set up opensuse kde with him, so I did.Set it up a few days ago on my semi-new Hitachi 1TB drive. XP was installed first, cloned from the previous (failing) drive, and took me forever to get it working.It was set up as:
Hitachi HD:
1st part: XP (250gb)
2nd Part: opensuse system
3rd Part: opensuse swap
4th Part: opensuse data
(2/3 may be swapped)
I still had 600GB unpartitioned and went to add a new 250GB partition via windows xp disk manger.Next thing I know, disk manager freezes and errors. I reboot for other reasons, and am greeted by grub (never used it before) stating ..well stating nothing.I tried the opensuse install DVD repair option and got corrupted video at first. Then I tried safe settings for booting the installer.I'm now in the YaST2 repair manager.I tried to recover partitions, but it's locked to scan only Partition 1, which is my XP partition. It says no valid linux root partitions exist.
I also tried loading the linux root partition with grub (didn't know the namescheme for the HD's, but I think it's devsda for HD0), no dice. I can't seem to find any hard drives through grub, but I'm unfamiliar with it.My goal is to get my xp back up and running. My guess is that XP tried to edit the partition table and screwed up something.The partition listing through YaST2 partmanager shows all my partitions.A good walkthrough would be great too, but at the moment I'm just going Really? It was that easy to annihilate all my bootable systems? I could also nuke the linux partition and use XP's recovery console and fixboot, then worry about the linux later. I haven't gotten it set up completely yet.
Trying to clean install 11.2 dual boot with Win xp already installed. How do I create a new home partition, don't want to preserve the existing home partition from a previous attempt. DVD installation and automatic config keeps saving the thing.

An Objective are follow:
1/ To figure out how many partitions are on the hard disk
2/ Create a extra partition about 10GB size on the hard disk
3/ Format the partition and mount var on that partition
Only utility to perform above operations I have "sfdisk" utility from BusyBox collection. Which get installed at the time of image flash in to ROM (8mb ROM size). The following is the root directory structure where hdd as a directory mounted /mnt/hdd1

Within /bin sfdisk utility can be used which I tried but no avail.

I don't think that the KDE Partition Manager works well on my PC. When I have used it, it often says that there was some sort of error; details escape me. But, if I do the exact same thing with Parted Magic Live CD, I get no errors. SlackBuilds has gparted with 6 dependencies. If I use sbopkg, do I select the last dependency first, the second to last dependency second and so on, or does order matter? Finally, and I am embarrassed to ask this in a Slackware forum but, is there an easier way to get a different partition manager? Is there a better partition manager?
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen I installed fedora I told the installation routine to use the free hard disk space. I had 98gb of free space. After the installation I look under the MyComputer icon checked the free space which is 45gb. Well I have a hard time believing that I have used half of 98gb already. There must be something going on here.Also.. With regards to the boot manager. It made Fedora the default OS. While I don't really have a problem with that is there a way to change it so that my other OS is the default? I use two operating systems and sometimes one week I'm using one primarily and then things will change.
View 5 Replies View Relatedi want to install windows 7 and ubuntu studio on the same hard drive(dual boot) but that is not a problem for me.since ill be using both i want a third partition to store all music images etc from both the OS's.i think the 3rd partition should be fat32 so that both windows and ubuntu can access it.but windows needs a system reserved partition nowadays and ubuntu a swap.so that makes a total of four partitions.So how can i make my fat32 partition?

I want to create an extra partition on the SATA disk without re-installing RHEL5. Is this possible?
I have a BIG extended partition. It's at about 750Gb. Aside from that, I have 2 unallocated spaces, one at 240Gb and one at 5Gb. I want to make one of my storage drives bigger, and so that I can take advantage of all the space I have. (Those 250Gb have been unused for ages. I want to use them for my growing libraries.) So I wonder: would it be safe to put these smaller "chunks" into the extended partition, and still have a working systen? I don't want to mess it all up.
Also, can I safely resize a partition, like adding the extra space, without touching the existing data? I'm not exactly sure how the resize/move function in GParted works. Will it wipe and extend or only extend it by adding it? It would be nice to have these questions answered. Also, if it's to any help, this is my partition table as of now:

As for the first entries, they're unallocated. They're the primary drives, but they don't exist. I'm actually considering to move my partitions out of the extended one, because I only have 3 partitions that I use and will ever use. But if the extended partition is not a problem, I will just keep it this way.
I'd imagine that I first extend the extended partition to consume the unallocated space, and then I move it all to the end of the partition, and then resize sda7 to consume it, and get a 750Gb partition. Can this be done without loss of data?

KDE 4.6 - opensuse 11.4.
I have a separate ext4 partition which contains all my data (music, movies, etc). When I delete files from this partition it is very slow because it copies files from my data partition to the Trash folder in my home partition. How can I avoid this? Can't the trash be configured so that it uses a trash folder in each partition instead of copying files to another partition (which is slow).
Trying to install Centos 5.2.i386 from DVD in text install (I'm assuming I need to do text install as I'm setting up raid arrays)

In the last attempt I did, sdb,sdc and sdd all had the correct ordering of partitions, but sda looked like above, which means I would need to assemble by boot array partition array as /dev/md0 = /dev/sda3, /dev/sdb1, dev/sdc1, dev/sdd1
Why is the partition numbering moving around as I create them?
Just installed 11.3 on my computer, however when I connect an external NTFS harddisk I receive an error message. When I open dolphin to connect to an internal NTFS partition I receive the message:

I have a dual-boot setup with winXP and openSUSE 11.2. I have both XP and SUSE partitions on a 160g HDD and then a Hardware RAID 1 array of 2 320g HDDs. The RAID arrray contains all my media/data files on an NTFS partition. For some reason SUSE shows both individual 320g disks mounted in the file system, but not the RAID array. If I attempt to browse either of the disks, I get an error and can't view them. How do I mount the RAID NTFS partition?

Fedora has grown up quite a bit since FC9 and I'm here to stay. I keep all of my media and documents on a seperate partition on my disk and am wondering how I can have it set to automatically mount it upon startup. It gets kind of annoying having to re-enter my password every reboot just to mount the partition that 90% of my time is spent on.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have the swap partition configured normally in fstab but it doesn't automount when I boot up. Not only that but I can't manually mount it either (ie with 'swapon -a', 'swapon -L /dev/sda7' etc). When I try I get this error -
