Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Install GRUB In /dev/sda - Enable This?

May 3, 2011

Ok so recently a friend recommended I try Ubuntu. So I downloaded and ripped 11.04. Reset PC went to install and got to about 95% then got an error that said "Unable to Install GRUB in /dev/sda" then downloaded 10.04 LTS and got same issue along with 10.01 (friends disc) and same issue. I have tried both 64 and 32bit, have tried iso and usb. I was able to install it on an older machine of mine and enjoying it. But I really want it on my main machine. Here are the specs of my main.
MOBO = X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard code...

Number 8 and 9 are the issue and choices after words. I am unable to select any choice on step nine. when i hit OK it wont do anything.
I hope this is all enough info and would love any help that is given. My friend who is an Ubuntu user is throwing his hands in the air at this point lol.
While doing research I found a few ppl with similar issues. And one person said when he made his own /root and /home partitions it worked. I get similar issue even if I take those steps.
Ive collected as much info for you guys as I can think of if you need more info plz let me know.

Ubuntu :: GRUB Leaves Win7 Unable To Boot / Enable This?

Jan 2, 2011

I am able to get into GRUB and boot Linux, but whenever I select Windows, all I get is an error about a missing boot loader.

After the Windows install disk failed to repair it, I reinstalled the Windows system and then used the Ubuntu live-CD to restore GRUB in order to be able to boot into Linux again. Now I have the same problem as when I started (although the error screen is somewhat different now).

Does anyone know how to break this "evil circle" of mine?

I am using the 10.10 (GRUB 2 in other words).

Server :: Unable To Enable Write Access To Samba Share

Aug 14, 2010

Hi,

I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out what is wrong with my Samba share. I have set up a directory /samba to serve up some movies, music, etc, on an Ubuntu 10.04 Server box. For now, I have given that directory 777 permissions, along with the subfolders:

Code:
drwxrwxrwx 4 michal michal 4096 2010-06-22 18:02 Apps
drwxrwxrwx 3 michal michal 4096 2010-06-22 19:02 Music
drwxrwxrwx 3 michal michal 4096 2010-08-14 19:27 Pics
drwxrwxrwx 5 michal michal 4096 2010-06-22 19:48 Video
This is how my smb.conf file looks like for this particular share:

Code:
[share1]
comment = share1
browsable = yes
path = /samba
write list = michal
Furthermore, I went ahead and mapped the Samba user to my Linux user account in /etc/samba/smbusers:

Code:
michal = "michal"
When I try to login from a Windows machine using michal as the username, I can see the folders, but I am unable to create new files on the share. Considering that the file system permissions are liberal on the share directory, I have no clue as to why I'm still getting denied write permission.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Ubuntu Installation :: Only Booting Windows7 - Configure Grub

Nov 21, 2010

My system set-up is one HDD that is partitioned having two Windows7 bootable partitions, and Ubuntu. I originally had Windows7 and Ubuntu, but I wanted to have another Windows7 OS to keep clean for gaming. Of course, when installing Windows7 it wiped out Grub2. I've reinstalled Grub2, but now I'm having a problem in that when I choose Windows7 in the Grub menu, it directs me to the windows boot manager to choose one of my Windows7 partitions to boot. I'd like to configure Grub so I can choose which Windows7 installation I'd like to boot from there. I've tried added custom scripts to point grub directly at the partition where each installation is located, but it always directs me to the windows boot manager. How can I bypass that?

Ubuntu :: New Dual-boot But Cannot Load Windows7(grub)?

Apr 12, 2011

Finally made the switch over to ubuntu, but I needed to keep my windows7 for several reasons. Let just start by saying I have two hard drives, a 200gig(which holds my windows7 partition) and a 500gig(has a 100gig partition which has ubuntu on it). After finally getting 10.04 to install on the 100gig partition and everything running right, I tried to load up windows7 and got an error.

Something along to lines of "the partition does not exist". I believe I messed up on the last step on the install, as I might of just been careless. I remember reading somewhere that if using multiple hard drives grub may get messed up in one way or another. IS there a way to fix this and make grub realize that window7 is on another partition, or am I out of luck?edit: Id like to add that grub is recognizing windows7, it just will not load off the other partition(I think)

Ubuntu :: Grub Won't Load / Enable This?

Aug 6, 2011

So a few days ago I was running windows clearing things out and decided to not have ubuntu anymore. What I did was uninstall wubi and then went into disk manager and deleted the corresponding partitions. And a long time ago i decided to upgrade from 10.x LTS to 11.04 again still having windows and that messed with my grub. I phoned a "friend"(we aren't anymore I forgot to pay him for his service) and he had a grub image or something and set that up after the bad install of 11.04.

Anyway back to the main problem. After deleting the partitions I realized OMG i may have subsequently did what every he did to make grub work so i could get into windows. My fears were right apon reboot i didn't have grub and it went into rescue mode. So i took my seemingly "bad burn" of 11.04 live CD image and installed it thinking since the conflicted partitions have been removed and it actually worked! But alas no grub to load it just boots into 11.04. code...

none of them worked because i kept getting errors of directories not found, no specified area, ect. And my only other solution is to reload windows but OH NOES!! I lost my product key for XP pro. This is what prompted me to fix grub in the first place since thats all i need to get into XP! So please, PLEASE! give me a hand here i'll tell you anything you need to know to help me fix this, monday august 8th is my project deadline and all my work was on windows.

Ubuntu Networking :: The Phone Can Access The Internet Through The Computer Unable To Get Access To Https Sites, Like Webmails

Dec 31, 2010

I managed to configure my W890i phone to get access to internet through an ubuntu-based computer. It's very easy to use the phone to give internet access to the computer, but the opposite is quite more tricky. For that I've done the following

----On the phone---

-Set the USB network option to "through computer", so that the phone uses the computer's internet connection and not the opposite.

-Decide and set "Shared Network" parameters: user, pasword and workgroup.

-In "conectivity-> internet connection" set "allow local network" to "yes"

----On Ubuntu 10.04---

-Install samba, samba-client, smbfs, smbclient, firestarter and dhcp3-server

-Configure Samba (System-> Administration-> Shared folders): same workgroup as in the phone, add new user (the phone), passwd this new user. In my case the user was called "w890i" and the password given was the same.

-Once the phone is connected to the computer through USB (then select "phone mode"), a new connection appears in NetworkManager: usb0.The aim is to create a shared network that gives internet access to this device. Edit the IPv4 parameters of this new connection, set them to Manual and give an IP adress (192.168.0.1) and a subnet mask (255.255.255.0); the rest of the fields are left empty.Connect this network.

-Set firestarter to use dhcp3: sudo ln -sf /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server /etc/init.d/dhcpd

-Launch firestarter and follow the wizard. Set "allow internet shared connection", choose the device for the primary internet access, and then the device for the shared network (usb0). Then change the settings for firestarter: activate DHCP for local network, set IP to the one we gave before (192.168.0.1).

-Open dhcp3-server config file sudo gedit /etc/default/dhcp3-server And set INTERFACES="usb0"

-Set the policies of firestarter: in incoming connections, allow connections from the IP adress given to the phone (192.168.0.1). Then add rules for the ports that need to be open for this connection. I opened HTTP, HTTPS, SMB, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, IMAPS, DHCP for all the connections in the local network.

-Apply policies and start the firewall.

------------

After all this, the phone can access the internet through the computer. Two problems appeared:

1. I couldn't get access to https sites, like webmails. The phone gave a "communication error". But then I tried with Opera instead of the browser built in the phone's firmware, and I could finally get to https sites.

2. I couldn't retrieve mail, neither POP nor IMAP nor IMAPS. I thought it was a firmware problem again, and I tried out several mobile phone email clients written in java, but none of them worked.

So this is at the moment the problem. If I connect from the phone to the internet directly through 3G, the email clients work for all my accounts. I don't think it's a firewall problem, because the ports are opened for this connection
