Is it possible to install ubuntu 10.04 on a second partition without overwriting the windows7 bootloader and boot it using grub on a usb stick?
I would be happy with just the second option as I could fix mbr if I have to, I just don't want it to easily visible that linux is installed as well as windows.
I just installed it. On the dual boot screen my windows7 partitions show up but nowhere on openSUSEI haven't checked if my windows7 partition boots though,

"The bootloader is installed on a partition that does not lie entierly below 128 gb. The system might not boot if BIOS support only lba24(result is error 18 during install grub MBR)"
What should I do before click next step to install? I installed opensuse with this error and some times opensuse can boot and some not. At least I was able to boot safemode.
Well i have Debian on, and have been using Wine to use some windows applications, unfortunately the 2 main games i wanted to use don't work on it, and a variety of other applications don't work either. XP is a bit intensive for my laptop, so even though i own it, i can't install it. I wanted to install Windows 98 to my laptop, but there are some issues, and i have no idea how to get around them.
1. My laptop has no CD/DVD drive (has one but doesn't seem to read any disk), it has no floppy drives, and the BIOS does not support booting from USB.
2. When trying to create a seperate partition on my HDD with linux on to try and make room for Windows, it stops me saying the drive is busy.

ATI Radeon Mobility 7000 IGP 32MB Shared memory
256MB of RAM (217MB due to shared memory)
40GB HDD
2GB USB Storage Device which currently has Windows 98 SE setup files on it.
Has an internet connection via ethernet cable to my brothers laptop. Also have GRUB installed, asks me which OS to boot. Debian Squeeze.
Ideally i wanted to wipe debian off, as its putting my laptop under a bit of strain and can't run what i want it too, or if thats not possible, just split the HDD in 2 and have Windows 98 as my main OS.
I have a major problem installing opensuse 11.3 on my computer( hp pavilion dv6).I downloaded openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-x86_64 from software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 11.3 and made a live usb.I'm a newbie at using linux infact i never used another operating system beside windows.Now i have installed windows 7 (on c disk 100gb).My first problem when i am trying to install opensuse is that he dosn't automatic choose to make my partitions so i have to do it manualy.I was searching how to make it the best way so i desited to make 4 partitons one for ' /boot' one for ' / 'one for '/home' and a swap partition/In windows7 i made 4 new partitons
3:10 gb for /boot
4:10 gb for/
5:70 gb for /user
6:10 gb for /swap
My first question is :Is this right to make 4 paritions in windows (opensuse can't format or resize my partitions it just can edit it ) so it's my only way to make partitions( If this is wrong how can i make partitions then)
My second question is how to change the bootloader configurtation because everytime when ii try to install opensuse it stops at about 96% and it says to reconfigure the bootloader options.
If i skip this i get the folowing message

I installed 10.04 and Grub won't boot into Windows7. I attempted to fix the problem through several different methods and nothing worked and I fear I made the booting problem worse than it was to begin with. I can boot into Ubuntu just fine, just not Windows7. Black screen with a cursor upper left hand. Windows7 repair disk does not help and using Windows7 command line repairs did nothing.
So here is an idea I came up with: Is there any way I can back up the Windows partition exactly the way it is, reinstall Windows7, and then somehow lay down all that information directly over the install to make it exactly like it was?
I doubt it is that simple, but is that possible? Like basically unhiding all the hidden files, copying them into a folder on my Ubuntu installation, reinstalling Windows7 and just copying them all back?

borked the bootloader by my own doing. When I got this machine, I had a single HDD. I partitioned it with a primary partition for Windows, followed by an extended partition with swap, /home/ and /, as well as a FAT32 partition for "general" data. (this was before NTFS write support was common) This worked well with the Win2K install. Eventually, I added a second HDD, which became part data storage, and part Windows XP install. I eventually put Win7 on it, and pulled the other HDD during setup so that the boot order of the drives determines whether I boot Win7/XP or get GRUB.
However, my "data" partition was not visible in Win7... It shows up as an unknown FS in the disk management. OK, I thought. I used Paragon partitioning software to move the "data" partition out of the extended partition and make it a primary. I could now access it from Win7. I didn't realize I had GRUB set to boot from the extended partition, so now when I boot from that HDD, I get "no operating system". No problem, I thought. I'll pop in the install CD (NET), use it to boot the installed 11.3, and run the boot loader setup. Nope- setup just hangs. Tried it with an 11.2 DVD... doing a "boot installed system" nets me a few moments of searching, "evaluating root partition", and then "no valid linux install found". Trying the boot loader reinstall from there nets me an "error changing to target environment" and the install fails.
I can still mount the / partition via rescue mode and all files appear to be intact, so I don't think I've lost any data... just grub/the MBR is borked. I've already moved the data partition back in to the extended partition but no luck. Still the same story... thus I'm stuck booting Windows until I fix this.
I have a desire to boot Tripel windows7 arch and Slackware but unsure how to partison my hard drive??

I'm just a little bit concerned about the versions of Grub overwriting the openSUSE version or theme or something.
Would it work okay if I just shrink my openSUSE partition and then set the Ubuntu installer to install Ubuntu to the free space only or do I need to edit the grub file and stuff?
I had opensuse/winxp running.
First windows xp wouldn't boot - then opensuse **** out and I had nothing but a black screen. I spent about two days trying to figure out what in god's name happened. I finally got a copy of winxp recovery disk and it couldn't find the partition that windows was on. That gave me some idea of what was going on. So I tried to fix the matter from partitionmagic. I reinstalled grub making sure that everything was associated properly. I still couldn't get either opensuse or windows to boot after many many different trial and error attempts.
After deciding there was no help for it. I decided to slave my hard drive and wipe to start over. So I booted partition magic from USB and deleted my opensuse partition and -what do you know - windows booted right up. Aside from feeling windows xp's smug grin as the logo appeared - i am perplexed as to how this happened. My guess is that MBR tried to overwrite grub. But I think that the loader was confused and trying to boot from the wrong partition.
I want to reinstall opensuse again. However I want to make sure that this doesn't happen. I need my xp partition for examsoft because wine doesn't seem to work for it and I can't vbox it. So is there some way to make sure that when I do install from DVD on my USB that:
1) repositories are correct
2) MBR doesn't overwrite grub (should I install Grub2 or LILO?)
I am new to installing Ubuntu and cannot get it to install on my desktop windows7 and can't see any obvious reasons why it won't work.
The Ubuntu home page led me to believe that the wubu download would be the easiest way to download and install ubuntu side-by-side with my windows7, but I'm not finding that to be true. Know I have now tried to download that windows ubuntu installer 3 times now and it fails every time.
I have complete admin rights to my desktop. After over an hour of dowloading I keep getting message "Permission denied" and it refers me to the log file.
The last few lines of the log files states:
I installed Mint 8 on my sister's laptop (after her existing Vista, and I did so on a separate partition created during the normal setup process in Gparted) and she now wants to try out another distro and take off Mint, so how would I go about this? Would I boot from the distro's live CD, determine the correct partition, (I'm thinking of Gparted here) and then... what?
- Would I have to mark the partition to be deleted, delete it, then ask it to install on a similar-sized partition?
- Or would I not delete it, just mark to format it as ext4 or some other file system and it would then just install the OS of that live CD over the existing partition?
- What about the swap partition - does that need any changes at all?
- Will Grub/Grub2 et al normally be updated to reflect the replaced OS?
- I may do this on my own desktop machine in the future: I may want to consolidate all my existing partitions into one easy to manage massive partition. Is this also easy to do?
- How can I determine which OSs are on which partitions?
I have installed unbuntu 10.04.. since i dont want grub to boot my linux distros , i have installed the bootloader in the root partition (sda9 in my case with no separate partition for boot). Subsequent to successful ubuntu installation i booted using the live cd and extracted the boot loader using the following.
dd if=/dev/sda9 of=/ub.bin bs=512 count=1
Finally i edited the boot.ini (win xp) to show ubuntu in the menu which points to ub.bin.
But this doesnt seem to work... the same had worked with Mandriva 2010
Where did i go wrong ?
Sorry my previous question wasn't that informative so adding more. I had windows partition and free partition for Linux installation. I got installed windows7 and it installed fine, When I tried installing Ubuntu, I remember selected default options. I gave me default option as it clearly said "1. If you have another operating system (e.g. Windows XP) and you want a dual boot system, select the first option: "Install them side by side, choosing between them at each startup." I thought it would keep Windows as it is and I hit proceeded for installation.

At the end I am disappointed that I cannot see Windows boot option (Dual boot) It just gives Ubuntu option. I kept 50 GB free space for Ubuntu. Is there any option to recover/switch to windows booting? Or I have lost Windows installation overwritten by Ubuntu?

I'm having an issue installing Ubuntu with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit through Wubi. The Wubi installation works great and Ubuntu seems to install after the first reboot after selecting Ubuntu from Windows' boot menu, however whenever I select Ubuntu from Windows' boot menu after Ubuntu installs and it reboots for the second time, it loads the GRUB bootloader, however Ubuntu isn't listed at all.
Windows 7 is listed twice and Windows Vista is listed (seems it picks up the recovery partition for Windows 7 as Vista) and when I select the first Windows 7 from the GRUB bootloader, it just goes back to Windows' boot menu with Windows 7 and Ubuntu as the selections. If I select the second Windows 7 from the GRUB bootloader, it'll boot Windows 7 like normally. It looks like Ubuntu is nowhere to be found. Because of that, I just ended up uninstalling it.
I have a laptop that has multiple partitions and was running Windows 7. I installed Fedora in a area of free space in the extended area, thus in a logical partition. Fedora is now running on the laptop. But, at boot time, there is NO BOOT MANAGER. The laptop just boots straight away to Fedora.
I know this has probably been covered, but is there an "official" procedure or document available to us newbies that I can use to recover my system such that it boots all of my installed bootable partitions (including Windows7)?
Recently I tried to install openSUSE 11.2 on my HP Pavilion dv6-2125tx notebook PC which comes preloaded with Windows7. I used a DVD to install the openSUSE. Before installation, I created partitions on my hard drive for root, /home and swap by shrinking the C volume. This is the only way to create partitions on my laptop. I used NTFS filesystem during format of these partitions. During installation, the first error message that appeared was YaST error saying that it could not format the partitions though it was allowing me to set mount points and filesystems for the partitions I had created. The next problem was swap. I was not able to see the mount point and F (for format) for the swap partition. However when I continued by ignoring the warning for swap there was a partition for swap and it was the same partition I wanted to have for swap. So, I clicked the Install button. The next problem was grub error 17: cannot mount the partition. And then when I continued ignoring this too, the computer did not get any of the OSes saying that BOOTMGR (BOOT MANAGER) is missing. I had no options left but to recover it using recovery disks of my laptop.I searched a bit on the internet and found that grub error 17 happens if the corresponding partition exists but the filesystem is not recognized by the GRUB.
I concluded that it was happening bacause YaST was unable to format any of partitions with the filesystem selected. So in my next attempt, I formatted the partitions in FAT32 filesystem in Windows which I think GRUB can recognize. I did that because even if YAST would be unable to format the partition the filesystem could be recognized by GRUB.And I think that happened but I got a new error this time.The grub error 22.Now I don't know what to do. One thing that I am expecting is that my hard drive cannot be partitioned in the correct way for linux. I can only shrink the volume and create logical partitions only from one dynamic partition c. And that may be the reason YaST could not format the partitions in the correct filesystem and inturn the grub error is happening.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using Truecrypt to encrypt my Windows 7 OS. I also have unencrypted Ubuntu 10.04 installed on /dev/sda6 on the same hard drive. Since Truecrypt bootloader must be installed in MBR, I have GRUB2 installed on /dev/sda6, so I can use TC bootloader to load GRUB2. When I first install GRUB2 on /dev/sda6, I can use TC bootloader to load Ubuntu. But, if I boot into Windows via TC bootloader, and then later try to boot into Ubuntu, I get the message "no bootable partition found". I have to reinstall GRUB2 onto /dev/sda6, every time after I use windows in order to be able to boot into Ubuntu. It seems that starting Windows somehow overwrites GRUB2. Is there a fix for this?

I have several distro's and just let them install their bootloaders, but always on hd0 mbr. I installed Debian 5.0.1 this way and it wouldn't boot, so I got SGD to "fix" it, which it said was successful, but all I get is a partition doesn't exist when I try to boot. I put Debian on /dev/sdb3, I loaded Linux Rescueand mounted sdb3 and verified that its menu.lst had the right boot numbers (hd1,2). fdisk even showns /dev/sdb3 as boot as shown by the asterisk under the boot column. Should I do a complete reinstall of grub, maybe using one of the other distro's as the holder of grub? At one time they did all the grub launching as each addition was made

I have 3 Linux partitions (swap, root, and home). Obviously I am running GRUB to boot, but this seems to be impacting my ability to install Windows 7 SP1. I would like to revert back to the Windows boot loader, install the Service Pack, and then revert back to GRUB. How do I do this?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu no problem, except for when it came to picking the location for GRUB2 to go, the bootloader.It error'd out on me, and would not let me select a single location, so I clicked continue without, and I'd install it manually. Well, once it got to the manual part, it said everything was kosher, but when I reboot, I am greeted with a black terminal screen.It tells me to hit tab for commands. What exactly did I do wrong, and how may I fix this? Do I need to reinstall ubuntu? I'm running off the LiveCD right now, and it's ok, but I really hate having to use a CD to even boot up.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've got a pc which used to have windows xp on it but i totally wiped the hard drive so its got nothing on it. i downloaded ubuntu 10.10 from the ubuntu website and burnt the image to a cd. i boot from this cd on the pc and it comes up with ubuntu try now or install. so i go install, wipe harddrive and install over it.
everything installs great until the very end, where it says fatal error, grub-install could not install boot loader. the pc has 40gb hdd (plenty of room), is connected to the internet so i dont know what is wrong. something with partitioning?
I am installing version 10.10. Does it matter where I install the bootloader? There are selections for the entire device and each partition. I have Windows 7 on /dev/sda1 and Ubuntu on /dev/sda3. The last time I tried this I couldn't go back to Windows 7 even after using the grub-update commands.
