General :: How Do I Install / Partition Kubuntu 10.10 From CD

Feb 3, 2011

I recently received my Kubuntu 10.10 Desktop Edition Install CD and I'm trying to install it to dual boot with Windows 7. I used Wubi and it gave me two options: Install inside from Windows, and Demo and Full Installation. I picked Demo and Full Install and tried to install from inside the Kubuntu Demo. When I do and it gets to the "Disk" section of the install, it gives me two options to install. The first option is to erase and partition the whole drive, which I understand as it would erase my whole hard drive and partition the whole thing for Kubuntu, not allowing me to use Win7. The second option was to manually select partitions, but since I'm a noob to this, I dont know how to set partitions. I need to know how to install Kubuntu where I can dual-boot with my Win7.

I had 5.4 machine. Upgraded to 5.5 today via yum upgrade. All went fine. Rebooted. Wanted to convert root partition to ext4 (I have three partitions: /boot, / and swap). All of them on software RAID 1 (root is /dev/md2). I did the following for converting

yum install e4fsprogs
tune2fs -O extents,uninit_bg,dir_index /dev/md2
nano /etc/fstab # I indicated here that my /dev/md2 is of ext4

Ubuntu Installation :: Downloading Kubuntu - 6.06.1-dvd-i386.iso

Mar 11, 2010

I have an old laptop, on which I want to Install kubuntu 6.06.1

So, I downloaded kubuntu-6.06.1-dvd-i386.iso

Unfortunately, for some strange reason the file has been corrupted. Fortunately, the corruption is limited to several bytes.

I know this because I downloaded the torrent and "checked" the file hashes. A total of 5 "pieces" are missing.

Unfortunately, there is no one to seed. None! I am the only guy sharing 99.8%.

share this DVD? I just need to download 5 MB (1 MB for each piece).

OpenSUSE Install :: Repairing A Corrupt EXT4 Partition?

Mar 24, 2010

After installing the recent kernel update and rebooting my machine I have found a horrible fact, my computer won't boot anymore. It seems my root partition was corrupted, and running fsck on it just sends me through a endless loop of "Ignore Errors {y}:" and "Force overwrite {y}:". I have already tried the use the repair system on the installation DVD but that doesn't do anything, the pop up asking if I want to repair the file system keeps coming up when I click repair.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.0 - Cannot Increase Ext4 Partition Size

Nov 11, 2010

I have done it quite often. Inserted and run the computer from a live CD so that the hard drive is not mounted an changed the partitions. It worked on the old reiserfs when I wiped the windows partition on my laptop to increase the space, it worked on ext3 partitions. Now I resized the swap partition and reduced the NTFS partition on my desktop - no problem. But it does not increase the ext4 partition. No error message it just does not do it. I tried several times with the suggested maximal setting, with a custom setting, etc. It just does not change size. Just for interest I booted into Suse11.0 live CD and tried from there. There I get the answer cannot resize partition as the file system does not allow resizing. Is something wrong with the system or does the partitioner not work with ext4?

OpenSUSE Install :: All Data From Ext4 Partition Missing

Jan 1, 2011

I have a system running OpenSUSE 11.3 using the bare server configuration.I had a partition for my /srv directory. All was fine until earlier today. I shutdown my system (to remove an old floppy drive from it). When I rebooted, /srv is emtpy (no files nor directories). This is somewhat vexing, as I had several sites running from there, as well as a fair amount of data. The appropriate partition (/dev/sda3) appears using fdisk. However, there is no mention of it in /var/log/messages.Does anyone know how to recover an Ext4 partition?

OpenSUSE Install :: Access Files From Windows From An Ext4 Disk?

Feb 5, 2010

I am dual booting OpenSUSE and Windows 7 Pro x64. Each OS is installed on a separate 1Tb hard drive. One question that I have tried to Google for a solution with no success is, how do you access ext4 from Windows? Shortly after I installed OpenSUSE, my OpenSUSE hard drive "vanished" from Windows 7. aturally, I can access all my hard drives from OpenSUSE, which does support the NTFS. I am quite sure that I am not the only person who has this problem as I know that dual booting Linux and Windows is quite common.

OpenSUSE Install :: Unaccessible And Not Used 1.2 Tb Ghost Ext4 Partition Made During Installation?

Sep 16, 2010

I am not sure this is the right forum, its more about partitions, but it is a bit like it. This is the problem; I have a problem concerning my partitions; I run Opensuse 11.3 KDE 4.4.4 (standard issue) 64 bit. When I installed suse I had only attached one harddisk. A 1.5 Tbhardisk. In that I had made a 50 Gb partition and installed Windows. I tried out linux mint, just for the fun, and thenI installed Opensuse, let it erase mint and gave it another 50 Gb In that it made home etc. The rest Suse also formatted in ext4. Somehow it didn't get a mount point.I then attached second and third harddrive, and gave them mount points Windows/E and F respectively. (They are formatted in ntfs-3g)Yesterday I decided to give it a mountpoint, and gave it /windows/DI changed my mind and changed it to /home2In both these places I could access it but only as read only. And most weird of all, it had a lot of files in them, very much looking like root.

My questions are; How can I access and use that partition? What might these files be? Can I delete them? How would I best mount them? This is a picture of yast expert partitionerImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting and Photo Sharing

Ubuntu Networking :: When Install Into A Clean Ext4 Partition, Have Zero Internet Support?

Jul 26, 2011

I have tried countless things and am at a complete loss. I'm pretty new to Ubuntu and Linux in general, just so everyone knows. Here's my problem: I can run the 10.10 install disc as a Live CD and have perfectly functional internet. However, when I install into a clean ext4 partition, I have zero internet support. I have Googled the heck out of this problem, too.I've tried tinkering with IPv6 settings, I've tried scouring my BIOS for anything relating to "Wake-on-LAN" (It's enabled in Windows 7, by the way, which is what I dual-boot into), and several other network-related ideas I've read online. None have had any effectEDIT: Additional details: ethernet worked like a champ in 10.04, and in 10.10 when I did an upgrade instead of a clean install. I had this same ethernet problem in a clean 11.04 install (which also worked in Live CD form), too, which is why I tried 10.04 to begin with.

Software :: Kubuntu Install Corrupts NTFS Partition

Feb 5, 2010

I convinced my sister into trying linux instead of windows. When she agreed, I messed things up for her in the install and now her files are gone. I was trying to install Kubuntu. I had backed up all of the data into one partition (hda7 ... which is the last partition) and restructured the other partitions. When applying changes, it crashed in the middle so I had to start again and redo things.

Finally when everything was installed, I tried mounting the NTFS hda7 partition but to no success. Upon checking in fdisk, it was listed as ext3 but even could not mount it with ext3. I checked in windows and the partition is marked as "unknown". what has changed is that instead of hda7 being logical, it is now marked as primary. I have checked testdisk and I am not able to recover any files from it. Any ideas?

1. Testdisk ... did not find any files from that partition
2. Partition magic ... got some messages that something wrong with the partition table, it fixed that, but get Error 17 and partition magic cannot start
3. chkdsk ... did not find anything

I read something about DD but I have never tried it and I am worried I might mess up things.

General :: Sharing An Ext3/ext4 Partition On External Drive?

Aug 30, 2011

is there a way of sharing an ext3/ext4 formatted partition on an external USB drive between different users (uids) on different Linux machines without creating a group for this purpose, setting the group ownership of the partition to this group and adding each respective user to the group on every machine? This would mean that I need to have root privileges on every machine... which I may not have in some cases.I'm using the partition to store the code I'm developing on Linux and I would like the option to be safe... if possible.I could use a vfat partition but then I have no control of the rw rights + I cannot develop directly in the dir: I would always have to tar.gz the directory, extract, work, tar.gz, copy to the external drive.

Slackware :: Install The I386 Build On One Partition And The 64-bit Build On Another

Sep 16, 2010

Trying to install SW 13.1 (on DVD) on the following system: M/B Intel: DX38BT Processor Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 - 2.66GHz, 8MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB, Socket 775 Memory Corsair Dual Channel 8192MB PC10600 DDR3 1333MHz Memory (4x2048MB) Graphics Diamond Radeon HD 3850 Video Card - Viper, 512MB GDDR3, PCI Express 2.0 P/S Ultra 1000W

My goal is to install the i386 build on one partition and the 64-bit build on another. I have been away from Linux for a while and am sick to death of Win7, want to come home. :-}

Booted on i386 side of DVD, system freezes after a couple of lines that start with ATA2. Does not respond to 3 finger salute, ctrl-c, nothing. Have to press reset. I have tried both huge.s and hugesmp.s kernels

Booted on 64-bit side, comes up fine. I performed the install, selected for automatic lilo install. Lilo install hung but I was able to reboot. I booted off the 64-bit side again, entered the following: huge.s root=/dev/sde3 rdinit= ro It booted fully to the login prompt but the keyboard does not work, no input.
