May 30, 2010I now have a working (almost!) Slackware 13 install on my Samsung R60+ laptop "startx" gets me into KDE no problems, so there's a reasonably familiar GUI to muck around in, but I think that I'll need help getting the wireless networking going. It would be nice to do this in KDE, but I don't think it's going to be possible at the moment. Running netconfig was confusing, as I've never had to do it before. So imagine if you will:
I've just booted Slackware. I'm sitting, logged in as root for the time being, at the command prompt. I'd like to get my wireless card (Atheros AR5007EG) working. Can anyone walk me through the commands I'll need to execute (bear in mind that I don't even know how to edit a config file yet) in order to get this thing on the internet? I've tried reading the docs (slackbook) and googling, but with no luck so far - I don't understand what they're on about! Win7 does this for me.

May 8, 2010Using a Eee 900A netbook by Asus. By pressing Fn + F2, I can disable or enable the wireless chip on the netbook, a blue LED indicates the status. I've been able to connect to wireless networks just fine with this netbook. However, if the wireless chip ever becomes disabled, I have to reboot to get my network connection back. This generally happens when suspending. For some reason the LED will be off and I have to hit Fn + F2 for it to light up again.
However, after doing so, Linux will not reconnect to the network. It simply changes the wireless status from "wireless is disabled" to "device not ready". Even worse, I've recently had issues with the chip being enabled at boot, thus making it nearly impossible to get connected. I've searched around on-line but haven't found much of anything useful on this. This happens on all kinds of different distros including Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook, EeeBuntu 4 beta, Jolicloud and Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook.

Apr 17, 2010I installed 10.04 and Grub won't boot into Windows7. I attempted to fix the problem through several different methods and nothing worked and I fear I made the booting problem worse than it was to begin with. I can boot into Ubuntu just fine, just not Windows7. Black screen with a cursor upper left hand. Windows7 repair disk does not help and using Windows7 command line repairs did nothing.
So here is an idea I came up with: Is there any way I can back up the Windows partition exactly the way it is, reinstall Windows7, and then somehow lay down all that information directly over the install to make it exactly like it was?
I doubt it is that simple, but is that possible? Like basically unhiding all the hidden files, copying them into a folder on my Ubuntu installation, reinstalling Windows7 and just copying them all back?

Jul 20, 2010I just installed Linux Mint 9 as a dual boot install with Win XP. Trying to activate wireless network card driver and video driver. Pops up: "You are not authorized to perform this action".How do I get authorized?
Now every time I boot Win XP, the Internet Explorer menu bar is all blacked out and goofy. If I log out and back in it corrects itself. If I reboot it's blacked out again. Re-installed IE8. Still blacks out.Also Firefox in Win XP crashes expectantly. It has NEVER crashed on me previously.

I got installed windows7 and it installed fine, When I tried installing Ubuntu, I remember selected default options. I gave me default option as it clearly said "1. I thought it would keep Windows as it is and I hit proceeded for installation.

Oct 8, 2010I recently installed Linux for the first time because my Dell Inspiron 1525 got a virus and would not boot windows anymore. Everything works great. The only thing is that no my internal wireless card won't work and when I try to activate the drivers they just freeze. I have Linux Mint 8 Helena. I go to Menu-->Administration--> Hardware Drivers and attempt to activate the Broadcom STA and the screen just freezes. I have tried this several times with no luck. Feb 4, 2010I am using Linux Mint 8 Helena x64 Edition on Dell Studio 15 laptop which has Dell 1520 Wireless-N Mini Card. It does work when I boot from Live CD of Helena, connect to a wired network and download & install the proprietary drivers when prompted. But on the installed system, I am unable to activate the Broadcom STA driver. I tried completely removing and then reinstalling bcmwl-kernel-source and dkms packages from package manager.When I go to Administration -> Hardware Drivers and click on Activate for Broadcom driver, at first there used to be a window which said Downloading and it used to go away after few seconds and nothing used to happen. Then I installed few updates. At the time of writing, I have installed all the available updates. Now after clicking on Activate, I get this error :

Sep 26, 2010I'm been wanting to try Ubuntu for a while now, and when my mom's netbook started to get insanely slow with WinXP, I tried the Netbook Remix on a USB stick. I LOVE it, except I am unable to get the wireless working, which is the only thing stopping me right now from a full install.
I believe my problem is that I need to activate the two drivers "Broadcom B43 wireless driver" and "Broadcom STA wireless driver" which appear as unactivated when I go into the hardware drivers admin tools. Unfortunately this netbook (HP Mini Netbook FW376UA) does not have an Ethernet port, so I can't just temporarily hard wire it to activate these drivers.
So my main questions are: 1) How can I activate those drivers without an internet connection?, and 2) Do you think that activating these drivers is indeed the answer to getting the wireless working?
