Server :: Cannot Save CNAME - System Config Bind

Mar 15, 2011

I'm trying to create a cname in system-config-bind. I can create the record but when I go to save it I get a "Zone file save error".
Here's the full output:
Save of Zone file var/named/chroot/var/named/plantsareperfect.com.db failed
dns_master_load_/var/named/chroot/var/named/plantsareperfect.com.db:10lantsareperfect.com:cname and other data (sorry, the rest is off the page and I cant see it)
Why I can't save this cname?

Server :: System-config-bind Unable To Save ?

Aug 16, 2010

Not sure why but I keep on getting the ERROR: Path is not writable when I'm trying to add a Slave Zone.

The server was commissioned by someone else and I remotely installed GNOME group, and vncserver as per the official CentOS instructions here.

Initially I tried using a normal (ie non root) user's credential for my VNC session. However, instead of asking me for my root password when I tried to open system-config-bind, it just doesn't load up. I ended up allowing the user "root" to connect to the server remotely via VNC, and was able to get system-config-bind to start.

However, I am now unable to save the settings, despite having done:

Slackware :: How To Save Needed Modules Config To Create .config?

Apr 9, 2011

I am running a server with a GRSecurity patched Kernel 2.6.32.36. I've tried to optimize the kernel as much as I can and know it (removing options, not needed drivers and so on) and compiled the modules into the kernel (no loadable modules anymore). I've started with Slackware 13.0 and the default config for 2.6.29.6-huge. Still I am not sure what to remove/optimize further now.

My question: Is there a way to boot with a kernel with loadable modules, check which modules are really needed for this hardware, (do something like lsmod) and save the running configuration modules for a next kernel compile to be the default .config instead of writing them down by hand and search for the appropriate names in .config or during menuconfig? (Note: zcat /proc/config.gz > .config is NOT the way I want, as it gives me just the current kernel config)

Maybe I waited not long enough (5 minutes), but the screen was blank, then I gave up.Anyone has an explanation. I can always re-install everything, but then what went wrong with the nVidia package

OpenSUSE Install :: Blank Screen After Upgrade From 11.2 To 11.3 (NVIDIA FX3800)

Jul 16, 2010

I have just performed an upgrade from OpenSUSE 11.2 to 11.3. My Machine is a Lenovo W701DS laptop which uses an NVIDIA FX3800M graphics card. The system was working fine under 11.2 before the upgrade.

After upgrading to 11.3 the splash screen after GRUB comes up for about 1 second before the screen goes blank. After about 5 mins I am able to SSH to the Laptop and access the system. Doing this I created an xorg file using "X -configure" and copied the new file to the /etc/X11 directory and renamed to xorg.conf.

If I SSH to the laptop change run levels to init 3 then init 5 the Gnome comes up and I have graphics the system works However I am unable to access the text consoles using alt+f1, f2 etc. If I restart the system it is back to the blank screen.

I have attempted to install the NVIDIA drivers however the installation fails due to an error with gcc or kernel source versions. Error log reports that the kernel was complied using a different version of gcc.

What have I done here and how do I get that session back? I've cleared the /tmp/.X11-unix entries but that did no good. Could I have checked something in Yast that is launching an invisible session?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Nvidia Twin View Config Not Staying After X Restart/reboot?

Jan 16, 2010

When I set up Twin View in the nVidia config tool (as either a regular user or as root), it only lasts until I log out and log back in (i.e. restart x) or until I restart the machine. In either case once I get to the log in splash screen again, it is only operating on one monitor, and when I log in I have to reconfigure in order to get Twin View back. How can I get the configuration to stay?

More info below:

I just installed opensuse 11.2 on an AMD 64 bit 3800. It has an nVidia GeForce 7600 GS card. I installed the nVidia driver no problem and can access the nVidia config app as a regular user or as root. Both access via KDE run level 5. That is, in a GUI desktop environment. I set up Twin View fine (it is kind of clunky process, but it does recognize my monitor resolutions fine) and click apply and I get the twin view I want. I clicked on save x config but all it does is bring up a file save dialog with a 'browse' button. Isn't this supposed to automatically know where the X config file is and update it? If it isn't, what file am I supposed to look for to save over? I looked in /etc/X11 and only found the following files:

./rstart/config
./xdm/xdm-config
./xdm/SuSEconfig.xdm
./fs/config
./proxymngr/pmconfig

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Blank Screen Using Nvidia Drivers - Nv Driver Works Fine

Dec 10, 2009

I have just installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on an Intel DQ35JO motherboard and XFX 9500GT 512MB video card. After installation the desktop looked fine on the Sony LCD TV I have connected to the 9500GT via a DVI to HDMI cable.

After the first reboot after installation I added the Nvidia repository via the add community repository function in the software sources option in YaST2. I then proceeded to install the Nvidia G02 drivers and the nvidia-settings package. At this point after a reboot I would get a blank screen. Hitting ctrl-alt-F1/F2/F3/F4/F5/F6 has no effect, I could not get any of the virtual consoles to appear. I had to SSH into the box and reboot into runlevel 3.

Once I had rebooted into runlevel 3 I logged in as root and executed "sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia" and got an error message that the configuration server could not be started. I tried executing "sax2 -r -m 0=vesa" and received the same error:

Let's start with "/etc/*.conf", of course ... but is this enough ?

The server basically runs a DHCP server and a DNS server

CentOS 5 Networking :: Point Blank Refusal To Pickup Signal From Router

Aug 9, 2009

I've just installed CentOS 5.3 on a Shuttle PC with an Atheros AR5001X+ Wireless card, and although the card is properly recognised and correctly identified by the OS, there seems to be a point blank refusal to pick up a signal from my network router, which is a Be*Box branded Thomson 585v7. I've previously successfully managed to get this PC and wi-fi card to pick up the signal from that router under other OSes including Kubuntu, openSUSE, Windows XP Pro and Windows 7 RC, but no luck with CentOS 5.3.

Clicking on Scan for Networks... in KWiFiManager doesn't even bother to scan for a network signal. From the very split second I take my finger of the mouse button, it instantly displays a dialog box which tells me . . . "The scan is complete, but no networks have been found."

How on earth can it actually find a network signal, when it doesn't even bother looking for any?! Wireless access is the only way I can get that machine online. A wired connection is not a realistic option, since the ADSL modem/router is in a front room downstairs, and all my PC's are in a back room upstairs, and would require about 10-20 meters of RJ45 ethernet cable and a lot of unnecessary extra work. The PC I'm currently typing this message on (running W7RC) is picking up the wi-fi signal with no problem.

I can save the IP address and changes to DHCP and Static, but when I enter in the information for the Domain Name and Host Name, I click next, it saves, but when I go back in to it, the items I set are blank again. The boxes are not greyed out, you can type information in without error. When entering YAST, it requests the root pw which also works fine. I am not using any strange characters other than letters/numbers. I am going in to the screen by clicking network devices-->Netword Card-->Host Name and Name Server.
