CentOS 5 Networking :: Point Blank Refusal To Pickup Signal From Router
Aug 9, 2009
I've just installed CentOS 5.3 on a Shuttle PC with an Atheros AR5001X+ Wireless card, and although the card is properly recognised and correctly identified by the OS, there seems to be a point blank refusal to pick up a signal from my network router, which is a Be*Box branded Thomson 585v7. I've previously successfully managed to get this PC and wi-fi card to pick up the signal from that router under other OSes including Kubuntu, openSUSE, Windows XP Pro and Windows 7 RC, but no luck with CentOS 5.3.
Clicking on Scan for Networks... in KWiFiManager doesn't even bother to scan for a network signal. From the very split second I take my finger of the mouse button, it instantly displays a dialog box which tells me . . . "The scan is complete, but no networks have been found."
How on earth can it actually find a network signal, when it doesn't even bother looking for any?! Wireless access is the only way I can get that machine online. A wired connection is not a realistic option, since the ADSL modem/router is in a front room downstairs, and all my PC's are in a back room upstairs, and would require about 10-20 meters of RJ45 ethernet cable and a lot of unnecessary extra work. The PC I'm currently typing this message on (running W7RC) is picking up the wi-fi signal with no problem.

I recently moved to Beijing and am having trouble with my apartment's wireless setup. My laptop can connect to any wireless network I find out in Beijing but not our home network. My Roommate has a mac laptop and has no issues connecting to our wireless router. It appears to connect but receive no signal, which is frustrating me to no end. Here is my spec list and the model of wireless router we are using.

I have a wireless network in my house through a Zyxel P-320W router, and I've noticing that the signal strength isn't very good in the basement. Now I have this old D-Link-624+ router lying around for a long time and I've been hoping to get it to work as an access point, that way I can move freely around the house without changing which router I'm connected to.

I'm sure that some of us techies have found the need from time to time to have a portable wireless bridge (see ascii art below) on our jaunts into the big bad user-woods, and I am here to ask the question of HOW to pull this off, with the least installation/configuration possible, as my tech lappy is also my main computer. What I want to do is this:
Code:
(ISP) -> (wlan0 - [MyLappy] - eth0) -> (Client computer)
Basically, thats a mess, so i'll explain it further:
wlan0 grabs the netz, and a computer connected to eth0 via switch/router/crossover cable can access those netz.
1. No configuration on the client would be prime choice rib for me.
2. Client should be any OS/Arch.
Any grand ideas out there? Currently using FC10, with various extra repos enabled.
Oh, and N00by alert, I'm learning quick, and am not shy to try new/complicated things, just bear with me!

The garage in my house is a dead spot for my current wifi router.I can't get a signal there.Moving my router within the limits of my cabling doesn't fix it. But I have two other routers I'm no longer using. Is it possible to use one of them as a wireless access point to extend the range of my current router? If so, what is the general procedure for doing that? My main router is a Verizon Actiontec M424WR. My other unused routers are a D-Link and a Netgear, both of which have wireless capability. The Netgear had a superior range, as I recall.

Does anyone have experience with the D-LINK DIR-655 gateway OR router OR wireless access point? On the surface, I like this box, but it is giving me grief. First, it wants me to use a win-dose CD configurator application. I use the embedded web page configurator. Next, there are several configuration wizards at the embedded web page. After trying the wizards, I went to the manual screens to tinker to get something working.
So what is going on? When a LAN client connects, I want DHCP to present at least two "nameserver" values ... which then make their way into /etc/resolv.conf The DIR-655 plays some nameserver games like caching and blacklisting and other things. However, I get some ad-vert page from "dnssearch" or "yahoo" or similar when names don't resolve. I really don't want this behavior. Network-manager does not report the connection down, however streaming anything stops or "reconnects", browsing times out, LAN side traffic seems to stop as well.

I have a new server running on xubuntu 9.10 behind a "Check Point Safe @ Office security appliance" (a LAN switch with an obnoxious firewall), and cannot make ssh, ftp, telnet, or vnc connections to it from outside the network. All I get are "connection refused" errors. I've made sure sshd, x11vnc, and proFTPd are running when I test the connections, and that ufw (firewall) has all of their default ports completely unrestricted. I've set a rule on the router to allow and forward all connections and all ports to the server, and I've also also put it on the exposed machines list, which reads like it should provide full access to any incoming connection. I still can't make connections to it, and it's driving me nuts. Does anyone have suggestions (or requests for more information)?
(ps- The router isn't really a choice: even if I bought another, I'd have to hide it and hope no one notices the policy breach)

when trying to startup Ubuntu 10.04 the screen goes blank and says no signal. But there are three Ubuntu's to chose from. the middle one will boot-up and works all right. But for when it is starting up the screen flashes and comes back on. the top one doesn't work at all screen goes blank but the lights on tower stay on.
the bottom one starts to boot but when it gets to the screen for your id and pass. it goes all blank but for a white line on the right side of the screen. this is on an old e-machine with a dual boot windows xp home. currently with 1g of ram and a 160gb hard drive split in two. with an AMD processor and ATI graphics on board. cant remember the numbers after that come after Ubuntu on the grub it is listed three times. how do you remove the other. let me know if you need more info.

I have a Centos 5.6 Linux Server configured as Router with NAT for my LAN. There are currently 2 NIC's on my server. One is connected to WAN , a PPOE connection (eth0) and eth1 is connected to a switch which supports my LAN. I have enabled NAT and configured iptables on my server and I am able to access internet from LAN and everything is working fine.I have a Belkin F5D8233-4v3 Wireless router and I need to configure wireless on my network so that I can access internet from my Laptop. The issue is that I have only 2 NIC's on my server, one Gigabit NIC integrated with my motherboard and another NIC which I am currently using for WAN access and LAN. I need to setup the Belkin as an wireless Access Point.
Can I connect my Belkin to my switch and set it up as a Wireless Access Point?? I have read about setup using 3 Nic's.Any ideas on how to configure my Belkin as Wireless Access Point with my existing setup? Is Belkin F5D8233-4v3 supported on Linux.

I have a complicated situation due to my goals and network structure. I have in mind a potential solution, a bridge, but I do not know whether it is feasible or what hardware it will require.
The network:
My apartment community provides residents with free Internet access through an ancient T1 line. We do not have the option of other Internet providers, so having a router and modem in the home are not an option. The T1 line is split among some 24 switches, one for each building, and each switch has one port per floor. At each floor, there is a D-link WAP, and each has a separate SSID and WEP key. Additionally, they control access at the switch level using Access Control.
My goals:
I'm used to being in control of my networked environment. I like to have friends over often, and most of them have a laptop, a smart phone, or both, which makes Access Control a pain. I don't want to have to think ahead and get their MAC addresses to the IT consultant while he's here during business hours. My wife and I have 6 devices, two of which require an Ethernet connection.
I use a few applications for streaming that utilize UDP (I'm not sure if the WAPs are smart enough to even handle this) and I don't like having my traffic muddled with my neighbors.
I should note that I tried extending the network with my Airport Extreme router, which apparently only works with other Apple devices. I've also looked into WDS, but that seems to require an unlikely amount of cooperation from the IT consultant on site.
The potential solution: a Linux server that acts as a router. Ideally, it could act as a webserver for a small static site as well, but let's focus on the routing. I'd like to bridge two NICs and use masquerading (Internet Connection Sharing). The public interface would connect to the WAP using WEP. The private interface would allow up to 8 devices to connect to the server.
It seems easy enough to configure the public interface, and even to bridge the connections. What I've never done before is purchase a wireless card that can accept multiple clients. Maybe they can all do this?

This one has been driving me nuts for some days now:My Gentoo box which is acting as an internet gateway has two point-to-point interfaces, ppp0 (PPPoE to my ISP) and ppp1 (PPTP VPN link to IPREDator). Packets from my local network are just routed through ppp0 and now the fun part starts: I want to MARK (netfilter...) all packets originating from one specific user on that box in order to use another routing table that will contain a default route via the ppp1 interface.Marking seems to work fine as does the second routing table. But quite mysteriously (at least for me), the packets sent out on ppp1 contain the wrong source IP address, namely the address associated with ppp0.So here is what ifconfig and friends tell me:Network interfaces:
Code:
# ifconfig ppp0
ppp0 Protokoll:Punkt-zu-Punkt Verbindung

I was wondering if there is any way to SSH from one computer to another and completely bypass a router or any other network infrastructure. The reason I ask is because my robot ( same one in this post ) often needs to change which wireless network it automatically connects to, however it is getting annoying to have to drag out a monitor and plug it in along with a keyboard and mouse every time this needs to happen. Instead I'd much rather just plug my laptop into the other computer, SSH in and change the network myself.
So I thought I would ask you kind people if this is possible. The robot's computer has unused ethernet and USB ports, and I'd like to use those if at all possible (and with linux, anything is possible! -- sorta). I thought about doing something with ad-hoc, but this would limit my range (in infrastructure mode I can control the thing anywhere there is internet), and is to be avoided.

just finished installing Centos5 and I had no problems installing it. But when I tried to connect to the internet, the trouble began. My network card is installed and the status is "OK". The network card is a "Realtek RTL 8168C(P)/8111C(P)".The status of the device said "Inactive" and when I tried to activate it, it came with an error: Failed; no link present. Check Cable? Now the cable is connected as it should be.So next step I did is put in a static IP. Now the activation works fine. However I still have no internet. I can't even ping to my router!I need some new drivers for my graphics card too, but first I need the network to work, than I can download other stuff..

But after this point the reboot operation has failed and gave a blank screen.
At the end the installation failed.I started the machine vaio boot logo comes and stops. i can't even enterbios setup or change boot options.I have unplaged the hd reset the partions, pluged it again and recovered win7So i think the installation damaged the file system.i have tried the above steps 2 times and came up with the same result.I have installed fedora 13 before with no problem.

I want to use centos as a developer server on my desktop before deploying my stuff to the internet.
I have a netgear DG834G router. It's IP address on my local network is 192.168.0.1 and connected to the adsl line. The router is set up to act as an dhcp server too. On the router I have reserved ip address for the nics per their mac addresses.
My server is on a dual boot desktop. The other boot is XP and works fine, picks up dhcp.
I don't know how to connect Centos to the router.
I have tried to play with the network manager but to no avail.
I can ping localhost, interface eth0 is there, but i can't ping to the router.
I have set the manager system/administration/network to get dhcp automatically.
I can't activate the eth0 although the hardware device says it is OK.
I've looked at firewall and iptalbes.

I have a CentOS server that has some problems with the network configuration. I can't find the correct settings / help on internet
The computer has 3 network connections. ETH0 is connected to a router (a FritzBox 7050 with IP address 192.168.178.1). The ETH0 card has a fixed IP-address 192.168.178.22 - gw 192.168.178.1. Firefox as well as the webserver are working fine. ETH1 is not working (and not activated) because of problems with the drivers. ETH2 should be the intranet connection. This interfacecard has IP-address 192.168.17.1 and is connected to a switch. After the switch I have 1 computer attached with IP-address 192.168.17.3 - gw 192.168.17.1 A ping from the server to this computer gives good results and a ping from the computer to the server also. trying to ping to the fritz-box or to the internet constantly fails. As far as I can search, I'm certain that the failing is caused by routing-problems on the CentOS server.
the command 'ifconfig' of the server results :
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1E:E5:D5:F1:C4
inet addr:192.168.178.22 Bcast:192.168.178.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

As I was following a guide @ engineertim.com to securing the box, it asked me to: wget [URL], But I get: Resolving engineertim.com... failed: Temporary failure in name resolution. I searched around and tried configuring resolv.conf to no resolve - :) unintended pun
I changed /etc/sysconfig/network to include GATEWAY=192.168.1.1 From the internet I have a modem-192.168.2.1, a telecom voip box-192.168.15.1, and then my router 192.168.1.1 I'm able to ping machines attached to the router but nothing beyond that. I tried to get the results for ifconfig via putty on this machine but it says command not found. I can get it when I log in at the box in question though.

I have been searching the forums for quite a while, to add extra Loopback adapter in Centos 5.1, but no success! Could you please suggest me the steps? in Windows, it is quite easy to add as many adapters as you want. wondering, if this is even possible in Linux? I have to run GNS3/Dynamips for router emulation and bind those Loopback adapters to virtual routers!

I want to set up a Linux box as a wireless router to replace our existing Netgear WNR1000 router, as I believe the Netgear does not support the coming IPv6 protocol. Unfortunately, it is not flashable with OpenWRT or DD-WRT presently.
As we have Comcast, our cable modem acts as a dumb modem according to the customer support guy I talked to, and our router is the one that asks for the IP address from DHCP. Thus, when Comcast switches over to IPv6, I don't believe my existing router would work, correct?
My idea is to take a Linux box and put two NICs and a wireless adapter in it, using IPCop or Smoothwall to set up a router. I could then enable IPv6 support for when we have IPv6 with Comcast. Is that possible? Would there be a way to get BIND to hand out private IP addresses in the same subnet on the both the LAN NIC and the wireless card?
