I have some program that I want to run but I am not sure if it is going to do anything malicious. I have an old ubuntu pc which I am using to run it.
I know in Windows you have save a restore point where the registry and some other stuff (it's all mysterious to me) gets backed up and can be restored to later. Is there a similar concept in Linux? Can I bring my filesystem to where it was before I ran this program?
are there any sweeper / cleaner apps which can take back my installation as to when it was new. I know home directory could have config files etc..but that doesnt matter, i want all packages and applications reset to how it was when i had a clean install. I am using Natty

Something went wrong with my video driver to the point that the X will not load any more. I am using my live CD. Is there a way to back up all my prefs and software installs, so I do not have to reset it all up after re-installing.

Am quite new to Ubuntu (10.04) and have recently reinstalled XP. I want to make an image of my windows partition to save time and effort when wanting to restore this. I read the Ubuntu documentation on Drive Imaging [URL]..community/DriveImaging and am wondering if I've done things ok?
I've booted using the Live CD. Windows is on sda1 and is a 50GB partition. I have a hidden ntfs partition on the same hard drive at sda9 of 10GB. The first time I tried this I got an error regarding my output file saying "Not a directory". I'm assuming that was because I hadn't mounted sda9. It also reported an error saying permission denied on sda1. I then mounted sda9

The terminal window is just showing a flashing cursor in the bottom left corner under the above command line input. Is the fact that my mount partition being smaller than my windows partition going to cause a problem or will gzip solve that? My Windows install occupies about 7.5GB of the 50GB partion.
I'm not sure if dd is just taking a long time to complete the task???
I am unable to restore my iptables from iptables-save after upgrading Fedora. I cannot get iptables-restore to work, and I have resorted to entering rules manually using the GUI.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if there is any way to SSH from one computer to another and completely bypass a router or any other network infrastructure. The reason I ask is because my robot ( same one in this post ) often needs to change which wireless network it automatically connects to, however it is getting annoying to have to drag out a monitor and plug it in along with a keyboard and mouse every time this needs to happen. Instead I'd much rather just plug my laptop into the other computer, SSH in and change the network myself.
So I thought I would ask you kind people if this is possible. The robot's computer has unused ethernet and USB ports, and I'd like to use those if at all possible (and with linux, anything is possible! -- sorta). I thought about doing something with ad-hoc, but this would limit my range (in infrastructure mode I can control the thing anywhere there is internet), and is to be avoided.

Packets from my local network are just routed through ppp0 and now the fun part starts: I want to MARK (netfilter...) all packets originating from one specific user on that box in order to use another routing table that will contain a default route via the ppp1 interface.Marking seems to work fine as does the second routing table. I'm working on a Soekris net4801 that is running an unknown distro of Linux. The kernel is 2.4.29, and iptables is v1.3.4.
I can't work out how to save the iptables. I searched the whole system for files/folders containing the name "iptables" and got 3 results:
/user/local/lib/iptables
/sbin/iptables
/lib/iptables
I've tried iptables save, iptables-save and iptables save active.
"iptables save" and "iptables save active" give me an invalid argument error. "iptables-save" isn't a valid command. "iptables --help" gives me a list of valid switches, none of which have to do with saving.

I have Ubuntu 9.10 dual booting with Windows7.My ext3 /home is mounted as F: in windows.I share a firefox profile between them so that when i am in Windows my firefox uses the same profile as it does when in Ubuntu.It all worked great until recently. I am unable to save files by right clicking and save as. In the config i am unable to set a directory to save to. It neer asks me where to save to. Just nothing happens. some off my book marks are all messed up as well, my rss feeds have the same post on some random website every time i log on and i have to manually refresh to get the correct feeds back. I am unable to delete the random bookmark.

I tried moving /dev/random to /dev/realrandom and symlinking /dev/random to /dev/urandom, but lsof /dev/realrandom still shows processes using it.
In Does urandom share the same entropy of random?, the suggestion is to use mknod /dev/random 1 9. Will this hold across restarts? Should I be using udev somehow?

Is the mount point for external media (like USB) always /media?
Because in a Debian system, if I plug in any USB device that goes to the /media folder. So is it the case with all the other Linux flavors like Fedora, Ubuntu, etc. If a USB device is automatically mounted will it always go to the /media directory?
I am not concerned about the name of the devices. I am looking for every external media (like USB) to be listed under /media directory so that my code can run on any flavor of Linux.
