So once i read that suse was a better bet i installed that. the nvidia drivers have installed fine and i can get my required resolution of 1440x900 if i use an old saved xorg.conf file i managed to randomly cobble together a few years ago .. this is it ..

I am having the same problem, as soon as X tries to load my screen just goes blank. I have an ATI Radeon 9550. At first I tried switching between VGA and DVI as well but upon ruling that out, I switch to my on-board video card and that is working thus far, but I'm trying very hard to figure out a way to be able to switch back. Anyways I'll check back in later on if I have any new information I will post.

I installed Chrome straight from the Google webpage. But, it kept crashing. So I've uninstalled it to go back to Firefox, which I never uninstalled. Problem is, now, links in Evolution and Gwibber no longer work! It's still trying to open Chrome. Presumably I have to edit a variable or config file with the path to the browser in it? Where would I find this?

now i tried connecting to this server by vnc vnc viwer from my windows Vista machine..But only getting blank screen without a terminal window or anything opened.
I've installed 10.04 Server on a desktop three times. The install goes well and after the installation, the server reboots and I can login with no problems. I can also look around the file system and run some of the utilities. My network can also see the server. The problem comes when I restart the server for the first time after the installation restart. The system starts to come up and then the screen goes blank. The computer is still running but there is no video signal to the monitor; and the network cannot see the system. I believe this has something to do with the master boot record but I'm not sure.

I booted it up and get to the ubuntu install menu, were my first choice is "English" as language. Then I get to an installation menu were I proceed to "Install Ubuntu Server", but when doing so the screen just go blank and nothing happens. I've searched around for a solution but can't seem to find one.(Note: I've installed Ubuntu Server on other computers without facing this issue, so I don't know what went wrong this time.)

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install 10.04 Server on an old Dell Poweredge 600SC I had lying around, and I'm having an issue with the installation. I can boot from the disk without any issues, I select a language for the installer, and I get to the main menu (Install Ubuntu Server, Check Disk for defects, Test Memory, etc). When I select Install Ubuntu Server, it waits a couple of seconds and then goes straight to a blank screen. No flashing cursor or anything.
I've tried some digging on the issue and another thread from a while back said to add "vga=771" to the installer line and when I did that, I got an error from my monitor itself complaining about an incompatible video mode.I know I'm not the only one who has had this issue, I just don't know how to address it. This is the first problem I've ever had on an installation.
I have reinstalled the OS a couple times now. Not sure what else to check.(noobie)Its on a RAID 1 controller, so I'm wondering if that has something to do with it

When the installation completes, I boot up and first I update Fedora with "yum update". Then I install a nvidia driver with "yum install kmod-nvidia". Then I run nvidia-xconfig to make a config file. If I try to suspend on console without the X server running, the laptop wakes up to a blank screen. My laptop has an NVIDIA graphics card and I'm using the proprietary driver from NVIDIA. Thus I reinstalled the driver after the update and tried to launch X.org with "startx". After a short while the NVIDIA logo appears for some hundred milliseconds and disappears then. But now the screen is blank and it is not possible to switch to another VT via Ctrl+Alt+Fx. But it is possible to login from another computer and restart everything, so that I conclude that the system does not hang.
It is even possible to do work normally with the laptop from remote. If I try to kill the X-server, it ignores SIGTERM and has to be terminated by SIGKILL. But the laptop's screen stays black and empty and does not allow to switch to another VT (chvt terminates with "interrupted system call."). dmesg does not give any errors.

When i use my computer (whether it's going online, typing, playing a flash game, or coding) I get these "Black Flashes" that are becoming longer and more frequent. A "Black Flash" is when my computer screen turns blank (but you can still see the backlight) and i have to press the NUMpad ENTER button, shake my mouse furiously, or click my mouse, which sometimes causes undesired actions, but gets me my screen back. sometimes the Black Flashes last a milisecond or 5 seconds or i have to hold the power button and restart because it won't come back on.

Ive recently built a music server with the following configuration:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200 processor
Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 Motherboard with 2GB ram
Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB SATA Hard Drive
Samsung 22X CD/DVD Burner IDE
I would like to be able to run Fedora 10 (and Vortexbox, an application to burn and store CD�s) but have been unsuccessful in getting F10 to load. I am a novice Linux/Fedora user. I've been able to load and run Windows XP on the server with no problem. I have downloaded and verified both the x86_64 DVD and the x86_64 Live CD from the Fedora website. With the live CD, the last thing that appears before the screen goes blank and the install freezes is the blue line changing to white. I have tried several different SATA configurations , have turned off all non essential options in BIOS(ethernet, USB support), and have tried loading with fail safe bios settings.

My organisation is running squirrelmail on a redhat server. When users are created , at that time the admin sets a password. Thereafter the user can login to his account using the password. But he can't change it as is the case with gmail or yahoo mail. Also the password for any account is known to the admin in addition to the user himself - a weak security arrangement !So what I wish to do is provide a way for users to change his password anytime he wants and also during the first login - as is normally done in banking sites, etc
