Ubuntu Installation :: How To Load Kickstart Config File - Refuses To Load File / Launches Generic Install
May 6, 2010
I created an Ubuntu 10.4 iso with the kickstart cfg on it, trying to boot it with the ks=/cdrom/pathtoconfig (tried even ks=cdrom:/path) parameter in VirtualBox but it refuses to load the file and just launches the generic install.

Tonight I installed ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) on an external usb harddrive with a dvd I burned and I used my older desktop. I disconnected all internal and external drives first so everything had to be put on the usb drive I selected (only option available). I used the option to load extra software, use the entire hard drive, and let the software do it's thing. I basically had no options where to put things and it didn't have much choice.
When I boot the usb drive on my laptop (win 7 64 bit) by telling the bios to boot to it first... I get an error: modprobe: FATAL Could not load /lib/modules 2.6.35-22 generic modules No such file or directory. This message appears twice and then it does boot into ubuntu and seems to work fine. I'm new to this OS so that is an uneducated guess but the things I have done seem to be working. So exactly what is this error referring too? Is there a way to fix the problem or do I just ignore it.

I am getting a strange font problem (see attached screenshot) for a user logging in over VNC Server, I am also logged in over VNC however I am no experiancing any problems... This was the case on CentOS 5.3 and on 5.4. I have tried removing the .vnc dir in the users home dir and re running vncserver so that it recreates it, I found this in the logs:
1. (nautilus:14718): Pango-WARNING **: No builtin or dynamically
2.loaded modules were found. Pango will not work correctly.
3.This probably means there was an error in the creation of:
4.'/etc/pango/pango.modules'
5. You should create this file by running pango-querymodules.
6.Fontconfig error: Cannot load default config file
[code]....

I recently lost the default panel from the top task bar, a message appeared on boot up saying a config file was missing or couldn't load - or something to that effect. I didn't realise to what it was referring until the computer (an Acer One) completed its start up and I could see the desktop
How can I restore the panel? (graphic from my other Ubuntu laptop attached showing the default panel appearance)

I'm trying to install Ubuntu (9.10) on my sisters computer. I have installed ubuntu 9.10, but when I try to boot it from hard drive, it would stop loading a bit after the logo appears. The screen would turn off while the system is still running. Live version of Ubuntu works after reports of errors. I tried to search for the problem all over the forum, and could not find a good lead to figure out the problem.
So far to figure out the problem, I verified if cd is corrupted. No issues there. Googled the problem, and seems like other users were able to install 7.04 (old posts).
Its so weird though that live version works and the installed version does not.
Here are my specs:
I can post logs, but I'm not sure which one is useful as I'm relatively new to this process.

I'm using RHEL 5.4 and trying to use the system-config-kickstart to generate a ks.cfg file with all the settings already appeneded. After running the "system-config-kickstart --generate ks.cfg" command, the file gets created but it's missing the firewall configuration, partition information and so on.
How can these settings also be generated with the system-config-kickstart?

My problems connecting to DSL are caused by not having the linux-atm-lib file.
After downloading the file and trying to run it, the error message is: Could not find RPM package in pool.
Where is the RPM package?
This is a new install. So far everything seems to work except DSL connection.

My internal hard drive developed a problem (probably from a fall) and needs to be replaced. In the meantime I've decided to use my external hard drive to hold a version of Linux (ubuntu 10.04) until I am able to replace the internal hard drive. For some reason I am unable to get the external drive to accept the recovery disks I have for Windows 7.
What I'm having issues with is that after installing the Ubuntu OS on to the external, I reboot the PC and it tells me it cannot find a boot file, and won't load anything. I have to run the live cd version of the OS to get anything to work right.

I've had Ubuntu 11.04 installed on my desktop since it's release. Up until an hour ago, it was working fine. I clicked on an update from the update manager, now booting into a graphical mode is completely broken, (the start-up load hangs at 'Check Battery State ... [0k]'). I restarted my computer, and booted into safe mode, and launched the terminal. This all works fine. I then typed :
Code: sudo gdm start into the command prompt, hoping that I would be able to start things manually. Instead, it spat out this: Code:
gdm-binary[230]: WARNING: Unable to load file '/etc/gdm/custom.conf'. No such file or directory.
gdm-binary[230]: WARNING: Unable to find users : no seat-id found.
gdm-binary[230]: WARNING: Gdm Display: display lasted 0.070467 seconds
The last line was printed about 8 times, with slightly different times, before it gave up and failed. Some information which might help, I have Gnome 2, Unity and KDE (not sure which version), installed. My graphics card is the GTX 275, and I have driver the Nvidia driver 275.21. So yeah, I think the update has gone and moved custom.conf somewhere, but I have no idea on how to fix it. I have a graphics programming assignment due on Friday and I would be eternally grateful if I could get this fixed well before then.

I'm trying to load RHEL4 (I know, I know, but I can't get around that) on a Panasonic Toughbook CF-31 using a kickstart file. I start the install using 'linux acpi=off ks=cdrom:/ks.cfg' (I use acpi=off otherwise it hangs at some ACPI embedded controller message). It does not recognize my CD-ROM drive, though, and asks me to choose the driver or point to a driver disk. I've selected 'Advanced Host Controller Interface SATA (ahci)' and it is able to continue on. It forgets that it was supposed to run off of the kickstart, though, and goes into the default graphical install. My question is...how do I add a line into the kickstart to choose this driver?

I was in Ubuntu when I dropped my laptop, which resulted in a cracked screen. I loaded Windows (Vista), and found it and the files to be unharmed. On my attempt to load Ubuntu, it takes me to a GRUB screen, where it gives me a default message about GRUB. If I try the command "exit" it replies "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key. It's installed on the same hard drive as Windows (dual boot setup), and Windows works fine. I do have files I would like to get off of Ubuntu (if it is unrecoverable),

I installed my updates this morning, except for the nss packages which refused to work. So I just installed the other packages and left the nss package. When I rebooted my computer X would not load. I managed to track down an error by typing "startx" from the command line:
Code:
symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libXi.so.6: undefined symbol: XESetWireToEventCookie
All I did was update my computer and have not done anything else to the system. Also, I found this: [URL] And I can not but notice that the version of libX11 available from yum is not 1.3.3. Could there have been a packaging error with the updates?

I had Fedora 7 and Windows Vista dual booting on my computer. I just installed Fedora 10. When the live CD asked me where to install it, I chose "Remove all Linux Partitions and create default layout" The installation went perfectly, but now when reboot my computer, it boots directly into Fedora; GRUB does not load to ask me which OS I want to load. I know I did not overwrite Vista because I can still view my Vista files through Fedora. Here is my grub.conf file:
[Code]...
What do I need to do to make GRUB load again upon booting?

I dual boot windows xp and ubuntu 10.04 LTS and the wireless card works perfectly fine in xp so I know its not a hardware/network issue. In ubuntu, it detects wireless networks, will connect to network and work for about 20 seconds.
[Code]....
and it continues on after this alternating between a normal 20ms and high ping over 200ms. The connection refuses to load anything off the internet/local network.

Running Ubuntu Server 10.4
I'm in need of some auditing to determine what is happening with some files on our local server. What is generally the best tool to load, and do you have any good links to a tutorial on how to install, setup and run?
I'm looking for what users have accessed a file. ... read, open, edit, delete, move, save... etc..
