View 6 RepliesI'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on my brother's computer. He has his sound system connected via the 3.5MM audio connector, but he also has an optical port on the back of the computer we have yet to try (he has cable and all though) but I doubt that will work versus the 3.5MM audio connector. His ethernet also doesn't work, he doesn't need it as he has a Linksys wireless PCI card and that works as of right now.
I also am not sure about his current graphics driver, in Windows XP he could have his native screen resolution which was either 1920x1080 or 1920x1200, I'm not at his place right now so I can't find that out. On Ubuntu he can only go to like 1400x1050 I believe, which isn't nice on his 23" monitor.
Is there any way I can get sound working on a MacBook Pro 6,1 in Lucid without breaking the Wifi or Nvidia drivers?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am basically wanting to use my Ubuntu 10.10 computer as a router. Note: Before you say just get a router please note that I am poor/cheap. I have two ethernet connections and one wireless connection on my netbook. I want to share the internet connection that is going into one of the ethernet cards through the other ethernet card and the wireless card.
DSL-->1sr Eth --> 2nd Eth (currently works)
DSL-->1sr Eth --> Wireless Card (Adhoc) <--(connects with limited connectivity AKA no internet)
The 2nd Ethernet card already has working internet, but when I connect to the Wireless card (through an Adhoc network), it cannot get an IP (I believe).
I installed redhat enterprise Linux 5 on an acer laptop to dual boot with windows vista the nic works perfectly with windows but does not work with the RHEL5.

and "Realtek RT8188CE Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E "
I have ubuntu9.10 running on this[dual boot].
For some reason there is no wifi and ethernet connectivity.
Are the drivers not installed? where and how do I start to troubleshoot this problem.
I have an old PowerBook G4 that I would like to use as a 'dummy' computer for learning wireless penetration (WEP/WPA attacks) more effectively. I had been using a wireless router, but I gave it away I can use Mac OS X to share an ethernet connection over wifi, but this is _very_ un-configurable. You get two options only, WEP and a key-length. So, I would like to install someway to make this wireless connection more configurable.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to work out where the driver for my ethernet connection is under Ubuntu 10.4. I am trying to install Debian testing on a new machine, provided by employer, which has an onboard ethernet connection instead of a separate card. At installation, Debian just says it cannot find an ethernet connection and offers a list of drivers to choose from. I have no idea what to choose so I thought I would install Ubuntu on the same machine and get the driver from there. The mboard is Intel DQ57TM

I'm an experienced user in Windows but a complete novice in Linux. I have a dual boot with ubuntu and 7 ultimate, the thing is that Ubuntu doesn't recognize my wi-fi card. Windows Device Manager tells me that my card is "Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Minicard" made by Broadcom. I don't know if my problem is with a driver or incompatible hardware, the ISO is perfect because I already installed linux on every computer in my house.

I do realize there have been quite a few posts with this network adaptor, but non really described the problem I have here.
What happens is that suddenly the WiFi LED on the computer stops blinking, the WiFi connection gets disrupted, and the device is not recognized anymore when checking ifconfig. Only cold restarting the machine helps then... it will work for a while (between 1 and 20 minutes) and then crash again.
On Windows 7 the card works perfectly fine. With Ubuntu 11.04 in Live CD mode I have the same effects (connection crashes after a while). Also tried booting an older kernel, no success.

I want to have UNIX or Linux on my laptop but I found that the wireless did not work on all the ones I tried. I have not tried again for over 6 months but don't have the time to experiment. It took me a week straight last time, I tried PCBSD (8.1), Ubuntu, OpenSUSE (11.3), and various others. The laptop was just released then, so I can understand why all the drivers might not have been compatible then.
I am hoping someone else has successfully added a distribution and can tell me which.
LAPTOP: Dell Inspiron M5010 (15R) [not to be confused with Dell N5010, which is the Intel version]
Here is my hardware (from Speccy):
We have some users with Dell 980's running RHEL that get no sound in RHEL and also in their Windows XP VM. I've logged in as root and still no sound.
When I run the command "alsamixer" I've turned up all the levels for Master and Speaker yet nothing works.
I believe this box has the realtek alc269 sound card. I've read some of the solutions on it but there doesn't seem to be a definitive fix for this issue.

Based on the some forum that I've read, adding the MODULE_LICENSE("GPL") is one of the solution. I did add it inside usb_main_dev.c and recompile but I still get the same errors.
I've had an annoying couple of days beginning with a win7 reinstall on a dual boot system (win7/10.10) that wiped out grub. I reinstalled ubuntu (10.04) in the hopes of just getting grub2 back up, but that failed and I ended up with a new install of 10.04 on the partition and a happily functioning and coexisting win7/ubuntu wit grub working the way that I wanted.
However, I'm traveling, and tried to reinstall the wifi drivers manually. I think I messed something up and installed the 10.10 drivers onto the 10.04 system (I only had a 10.04 disk and the pendrive usb method failed). Anyway, when I tried to (re)install the drivers from the cd, I got the error: a later driver has already been installed. However, the problem at hand is as follows: now my win7 install doesn't see any of the wireless networks around. So, I think I somehow fraked the wifi card.
A friend lent me their Ubuntu book but I can't understand it and could not find anything about the sound suddenly going from the speaker on Monday night. I went to Sony Ericsson's site to check something on my account and loud music suddenly started blaring out so I pressed the Fn button and End which muted it. However, I forgot to take it off before closing down for the night and as of Tuesday morning I have no sound. Would me leaving mute on all night have screwed something up or has it just suddenly gone? I am so upset as I cannot afford to get another laptop as not working and this is my last resort since my original Compaq one died.
I appreciate any "Helpful" solutions. Not in techy but layman's terms please as I won't understand. Also if you do reply, I am in the UK and also don't get notifications so I am not being rude if I can't get back to you quickly. I will be going to bed now.

And once I've edited the wl_linux.c file, how do I compile it? I'm new to Ubuntu and I've been at this for days now, here's my previous issue before I ended up with this one [URL]. I thought Linux based software was supposed to be reasonably trouble free? I've been trying to get my laptop up and running for close to a week now, I had less trouble with Windows!
