Ubuntu / Apple :: Intermittant Wifi Connections On MacBook Pro 3,1 Lucid 64 Bit?

May 8, 2010

I installed the bleeding edge drivers using a guide I was referred to from the wiki, when I was having intermittent wifi connections. It worked well for about two days, but now it's just as intermittent as before, and it works just fine in OSX and on other machines, so I'm thinking I need to change the driver.

How do I go about installing another driver? Which ones have you had luck with for a MacBook Pro Santa Rosa 3,1 running lucid under 64 bits?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Unabling Wifi Macbook Air 10.04?

Jul 1, 2010

I have installed 10.04 on my macbook air. As I can't physically connect a macbook air to the internet there is no way to download the necessary drivers and the 'hardware packages' doesn't have the nvidea or broadcom packages which were present when I booted off the livecd. I presume therefore that, like gparted, these are only present on the livecd & aren't installed by default. When I installed karmic I downloaded the drivers from my mac partition then transferred them over. I've tried doing the same with the lucid equivalents,[URL].. but when I try to unpack them (32-bit versions as is the version of Lucid I have) in the correct order each returns an error saying the drivers are either damaged or I don't have permission. I definately have the necessary read/write permissions so assume they must be damaged somehow.

If I can't connect to the internet Ubuntu is useless. Has anyone got any idea as to how I can enable wifi please?

Ubuntu / Apple :: MacBook Air 3,2 && Bad Wifi Performance?

Jun 23, 2011

running natty 64bit @ MBA3,2.Wifi performance is sometimes abysmal (~200ms ping to AP, 10% packetloss) with my Linksys WRT54Gv2 AP.It is not the hardware, as there is no wifi problem while running MacOSX at the same location. It is not the location, as MacOSX works fine (~6ms), and so does another computer with wifi connection (~1ms) on the same desk.So I'm suspecting the driver: Broadcom BCM4353 802.11 Hybrid Wireless Controller 5.100.82.38.

I have created a partition through Boot Camp, downloaded the 64 bit Intel installer for PC and Mac, verified the checksum, burned a CD from its image (on the second try), but when I try to boot up from that CD, rEFIt refuses because of a "legacy" problem. I assumed it would be a live CD, from which I could do the installation; am I wrong, is there another way to install from it? My MacBook Pro 5,3 is the one exception to having its own installation page.

When I booted into it, it said I couldn't run unity because I didn't have the required drivers. Ubuntu Multimedia :: HDMI Sound Not Working With NVidia ION Drivers

Jun 4, 2010

I have a zotac IONITX motherboard with HDMI video. The video seems fine, but I haven't been able to get the sound working through the HDMI cable. Even the little speaker at the top is gone. It was working fine when I had speakers hooked to the motherboard. I have installed the latest 256 driver from nvidia. If I run 'aplay -l' I get this:

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
lspci -v gives :

Memory at fae78000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel
Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel

I don't know if this is important, but I noticed that it says its running an intel driver for my nvidia sound. Could this be the problem and if so, How do I fix it? Also, if I click on system->preferences->sound it comes up with a dialog box that says that its waiting for the sound system to come up. Why I am not getting any HDMI sound or even the little speaker icon at the top?

Ubuntu / Apple :: ISight Not Working On Macbook 4,1 And 11.04?

Jul 29, 2011

Although I had 11.04 running smoothly on my Macbook 4,1 (OS X 10.5) since it came out, I never bothered to actually test the iSight camera. So I fired up Cheese, but it claimed that it could not detect any webcam installed. gstreamer-properties does not list iSight either.I followed this article step by step: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ma...am/AppleiSight. After installing the firmware I pulled from my OS X partition, neither Cheese nor gstreamer picked up on my camera. As a matter of fact, I investigated further and realized that /dev/video0 does not even exist. The firmware seems to be recognized by the kernel, according to dmesg:Quote:

usbcore: registered new interface driver isight_firmwareI repeated the procedure in the article again after purging the firmware-tools package, but no dice. I resorted to booting back into OS X to use my webcam, but as you can imagine this is not very convenient heh.Does anyone have any advice as to where to go from here?EDIT: I ended up uninstalling the firmwire, since it caused my Macbook to become unresponsive (purple screen of death?) every time after coming out of sleep. I haven't found a solution for that either. For now I guess I'll keep my OS X on a partition to use iSight until something comes up to resolve this issue.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Installing Latest NVidia Proprietary Drivers On 64 Bit Lucid 10.04

Jan 12, 2011

Thought I'd put this together based on what I just did as it's hard to find a place where you get complete info in one place for this topic.

Not taking any credit as it's just piecing together stuff found on the net.

Of course this is for my specific hardware and system so YMMV:
- Palit Sonic GT 240 card
- Lucid 10.04.1 64-bit
- Intel DG33FB board and E7200 CPU
- LG monitor L194WT at 1440x900 res

Reason for choosing the latest NVidia drivers instead of the ones available from the System > Administration > Hardware Drivers option is that the latest ones contain specific fixes for my card, that are not available in the others.

Prerequisites:

All of the following is based on a freshly installed 64-bit Lucid 10.04.1 system. Some actions may need modification if you have already been tinkering with Nvidia drivers.

1. Backup your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file if any. The default clean install of 64-bit Lucid 10.04.1 doesn't create this file so unless you have generated and modified the xorg.conf file for your specific needs, skip this.

2. Install the following packages

Code:

If this doesn't work, run

Code:

And paste the output of that in the command above so you get, say

Code:

3. Remove the following packages using Synaptic's 'Completely Remove' option
- nvidia-173-modaliases
- nvidia-96-modaliases
- nvidia-current-modaliases
- nvidia-common

4. Create a new text file disable-nouveau.conf in the directory /etc/modprobe.d/ with the following contents

Code:

5. Download the latest NVidia drivers applicable to your card from here:[url]

6. Save the downloaded file (e.g. NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.29.run in my case) to an easily accessible location like your home folder. Make this file executable by running, say

Code:

7. Check that the driver was correctly downloaded.

Code:

8. Run Update Manager, Check for updates and Apply any found

Installation:

1. Restart and choose the recovery option from the Grub options list.

2. Choose the Root Shell option in the list of options presented subsequently.

3. At the root shell run the following

Code:

If you skip this, the driver installer will inform you of the need to do this.

4. This will present you with a login prompt. Login with your admin username and password.

5. Navigate to the folder where the driver installer is present and run it, like

Code:

6. Accept the license text.

7. Say Yes to installing the 32-bit Open GL drivers.

8. I think you need to say Yes/ Accept once more time to initiate the driver installation.

9. Once the driver is installed it will ask you whether it should configure xorg.conf for you, say Yes. This will create the xorg.conf file if not present in your system and modify an existing one if present.

10. Back at the prompt, shutdown the system

Code:

11. Restart and use the normal startup option in the Grub options list, if all goes well you should see your beautiful desktop.

Debian Hardware :: Drivers For NVidia GT240 Video And DWA 525 WiFi?

Nov 3, 2010

Finally, i decided that i don't want to spend my time on this anymore and thought that maybe it's a sign i should try other distros (even though theoretically Linux is Linux is Linux), and Debian has always been appealing to me.

So my question is, has anybody had any experience (or issues) running Debian on the hardware mentioned above? I'm actually contemplating Ubuntu already, because there's a chance it will spare me some time and configure everything by itself, but the pride of a person who used to configure Linux from scratch doesn't let me switch to Ubuntu yet
