Ubuntu :: Wireless Card Drivers On Dell Inspiron N7010

May 14, 2011

I had just installed Ubuntu in my brother's laptop and the drivers for the laptop`s wireless card got deleted, or that's what is leading me to believe. Prior to the installation, the laptop was picking up wireless signals just fine. I tried finding the drivers on the INTERNET but there are too many and I don't want to get the wrong one. Even so, I don't know how to install it through Ubuntu or anything. I tried the "disswrapping" app. but it was looking for some sort of ".if" file type. I also tried using the Terminal, but I'm not an expert on this kind of stuff. I got Ubuntu 2 days ago on my own laptop.

General :: How To Install Drivers To Get Wireless Card Working

Mar 18, 2011

With nearly all Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Linux Mint being the exceptions), my system never seems to recognize that my laptop even has a wireless card attached to it. That is, when I run "lspci" the wireless card doesn't even show up on the list like it does with Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Mint. This narrows my options when it comes to choosing a distro to install on my computer. I can't seem to find instructions as to how I can make my wireless card work. I assume it needs a driver. I managed to find the driver, I think, in the form of a .tar.gz file. The card is a Realtek Semiconductor, RTL 8191SEvB Wireless Lan Controller (rev 10).

General :: Which UNIX Distribution Works On A Dell M5010 Without Having To Compile Any Drivers

Jul 22, 2011

I want to have UNIX or Linux on my laptop but I found that the wireless did not work on all the ones I tried. I have not tried again for over 6 months but don't have the time to experiment. It took me a week straight last time, I tried PCBSD (8.1), Ubuntu, OpenSUSE (11.3), and various others. The laptop was just released then, so I can understand why all the drivers might not have been compatible then.

I am hoping someone else has successfully added a distribution and can tell me which.

LAPTOP: Dell Inspiron M5010 (15R) [not to be confused with Dell N5010, which is the Intel version]

Here is my hardware (from Speccy):

Fedora :: Need GCC To Install Wireless Drivers In F14?

Mar 7, 2011

I'm using Fedora 14 (standard Gnome desktop) on a x86_64, GCC is not pre-installed. It's from a physical DVD installation, not a live installation. As I need GCC to install my wireless drivers, I have no internet access right now and can't use

Code:
# yum groupinstall "Development Tools"
or
#yum install gcc gcc-c++
or any other yum commands.

My next course of action was to try to call GCC by name, but when searching for it in the terminal, all I get is:
Code:
bash: find/: No such file or directory
Although the Add/Remove Software utility recognizes that I have GCC and all other standard compilers (but does not install them for some reason). So I think, okay, no problem, I'll just download the .rpm and other dependencies from a different computer and add them to my machine with a flash drive since I can't find them within my own OS.

I got gcc-4.5-1-4.fc14.x86_64.rpm, then these additional files as outlined in the error message:
Code:
error: Failed dependencies:
binutils >= 2.20.51.0.2-12
cloog-ppl >= 0.15
cpp = 4.5.1-4.fc14
gliibc-devel >= 2.2.90-12
libmpc.so.2 ()(64bit)

I get as far as installing the cloog binaries before I start getting long lists of failed dependencies, like so:
Code:
# rpm -Uvh cloog-ppl-0.15.7-2.fc14.x86_64.rpm
warning: cloog-ppl-0.15.7.2.fc14.x86_64.rpm: Header V3 RSA/SHA256 Signature, key ID 97a1071f: NOKEY
error: Failed dependencies:
libppl.so.7 ()(64bit) is needed by cloog-ppl-0.15.7-2.fc14.x86_64.rpm
libppl_c.so.2 ()(64bit) is needed by cloog-ppl-0.15.7-2.fc14.x86_64.rpm

I go on adding missing dependencies, the next one being libppl.so.7, but
Code:
error: Failed dependencies:
libc.so.6 is needed by libmpc2-32bit-0.8.2-9.1.x86_64
libc.so.6 (GLIBC_2.0) is needed by libmpc2-32bit-0.8.2-9.1.x86_64
libc.so.6 (GLIBC_2.1.3) is needed by libmpc2-32bit-0.8.2-9.1.x86_64
libc.so.6 (GLIBC_2.2) is needed by libmpc2-32bit-0.8.2-9.1.x86_64
libc.so.6 (GLIBC_2.3) is needed by libmpc2-32bit-0.8.2-9.1.x86_64
libc.so.6 (GLIB_2.3.4) is needed by libmpc2-32bit-0.8.2-9.1.x86_64
libgmp.so.10 is needed by libmpc2-32bit-0.8.2-9.1.x86_64
libmpfr.so.4 is needed by libmpc2-32bit-0.8.2-9.1.x86_64

I feel like I'm in an infinite loop of failed dependencies. Basically what I want to know, is there a much easier way of doing this that I'm missing? Or should I just tough it out and rpm -Uvh all these lib binaries?

Debian :: Install Wireless And Nvidia Drivers?

Apr 29, 2010

I looking for a new disto been using ubuntu. my friend recommended Debian, I just installed it and made it unusable very quickly by trying to use repositories for ubuntu. I'd like to know if there is an easy way to make my wireless work like in ubuntu it just does, (i don't even need to attach a cat 5 cable after install), and I'm happy in my blissful ignorance. Also an easy way to install nvidia drivers?

I need Broadcom and nivida 173 drivers. I looked through the Debian forums while I had a working system but found nothing easily and iceweavel was so slow, unless there was something wrong with my wired connection. Is there an easy way to install no free drivers?

Fedora :: How To Install RealTek Wireless Drivers

Jan 6, 2011

is how I added the RealTek 8188CE (or other RealTek drivers) to my newly installed Fedora 14 on a Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4056 laptop. This is assuming you have performed a regular install of Fedora 14 and have done nothing else.

1. Download the drivers at the RealTek download page here:URL...Search for your model in the "Download Search" box and selecting the Linux version of the software. In my case I typed in 8188CE and selected RTL8188CE (Software).

2.Extract the downloaded file into the desired location, open a terminal window, and navigate to the folder where you extracted the drivers.

3.Enable Sudo using the following command:su -echo "username ALL=(ALL) ALL" >> /etc/sudoers.Where "username" is your account username.

4.While still logged on as root, type in the following to install gcc and the kernel headers:yum install gcc kernel-devel kernel-headers patch make exit(From this point you really only have to follow the readme.txt instructions in the drivers folder, but I'll add them here)

5.Change to Super User sudo su

6. Compile driver from the source code make

7. Install the driver to the kernel make install reboot

Ubuntu :: Can't Get Drivers For Wireless Adapter To Install

Feb 24, 2010

I'm booting from disc on a compaq presario F700. Somehow, I messed everything up and now it's not reading that I have an OS. Which was previously vista. Now, when I boot from disc and try to install no partitions come up. I did open the blasted thing to clean it not too long but as far as I know, nothing dislodged. It is a laptop, btw. So, my kneejerk reaction is that the hard-drive got damaged or knocked loose. I also tried using kill-drive to erase it so I could start fresh, also no Hard drive detected. So, I'm going to try that. In the meantime I have another issue. When booting from disc I can't seem to get the drivers for my wireless adapter to install. I have them. Madwifi for AR5001X but I don't know where to put them via terminal.

Ubuntu Installation :: Wireless Driver Install Error On Liveusb For Dell Inspiron Mini 9

Oct 5, 2010

I have a persistent liveusb with ubuntu 9.10 that I installed using the method on [url]

I use it on a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook (that boots Mac OS X from its SSD). An ubuntu persistent liveusb works just great for occasional linux development and testing, but ubuntu 9.10 will be EOL next year, and I want to stay current.

I've installed ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS on a liveusb using the method on [url]

After I've booted the liveusb, under the network menu I see this:

Wireless Networks
Device not ready

A menu appears that looks like a PCI card with a lock on it. I select the only item under that menu, "Install Drivers". This gives a dialog that says "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system. Proprietary drivers do not have public source code..." etc. Under Ubuntu 9.10, I could at this point select "Broadcom STA wireless driver" and click the "Activate" button, and it would work. So I did that in 10.04.1.

It says, "Downloading and installing driver..."

While it's doing this, the "kerneloops" menu item appears. Then a dialog that says,

Sorry, the package "bcmwl-kernel-source 5.60.48.36 +bdcom-0ubuntu3" failed to install or upgrade.

Then another dialog that says

SystemError: installArchives() failed.

What the heck is happening here?

Well, it turns out that the error messages are wrong. I restarted and the DM9/ubuntu 10.04.1 was able to connect to the wireless network.

tl;dr: Proprietary wireless driver installation works, but it claims that it doesn't.
