General :: Which UNIX Distribution Works On A Dell M5010 Without Having To Compile Any Drivers

Jul 22, 2011

I want to have UNIX or Linux on my laptop but I found that the wireless did not work on all the ones I tried. I have not tried again for over 6 months but don't have the time to experiment. It took me a week straight last time, I tried PCBSD (8.1), Ubuntu, OpenSUSE (11.3), and various others. The laptop was just released then, so I can understand why all the drivers might not have been compatible then.

I am hoping someone else has successfully added a distribution and can tell me which.

LAPTOP: Dell Inspiron M5010 (15R) [not to be confused with Dell N5010, which is the Intel version]

Here is my hardware (from Speccy):

Ubuntu :: Compile Wubi For Distribution?

The Gosalia Enterprise and we are in the midst of creating a Linux Distribution.

I have been set the task of creating Wubi-like application for our ISO (Ubuntu9.10-based) but I don't know how to, so I came here to ask.

How can I compile WUBI for our ISO of Gosalia? Also, how can i create an ISO of Gosalia, we know that we can use Remastersys, but what is the PROFESSIONAL way of doing it?

Hardware :: What Distribution For Dell Latitude?

Nov 12, 2009

I'd really like to start using Linux, but I don't know much about it. I tried installing Mandriva One 2010, but it apparently isn't compatible with my laptop. Does anybody know what would be a good distribution to use with an old Dell Latitude CPx? I'd like to get a free bootable CD one for starters, if possible. I mainly would like to use it for surfing the Web.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Distribution Where Audio Just Works?

Jul 20, 2010

Is there a Ubuntu distribution in which sound "just works"? I'm booting into Windows 7 far too much.I am running both Jaunty (on an old P4V533-MX desktop) where for some reason my sound went away, and Lucid, on a new Dell laptop (all-Intel Studio 14). I thought a new installation of Ubuntu 10.04 on modern hardware would give me rhythmbox back, but I get no sound of any kind from the Dell laptop after installation, although everything works Ok if I boot into a W7 (came with the purchase) partition.

I don't want to fiddle with configuration files any more - just wondering if there is a "most-dependable" Ubuntu with respect to audio. Which I will install. Frustrated and impatient after weeks of this.I am an old (hairy eared) Unix fan but IMO if Linux continues to complicate itself so freely (i.e. Pulseaudio - I don't know an audio mixer from a can opener and would prefer to remain that way), then the small market share it has will slip away rather than grow.

Hardware :: Distribution That Works With Radeon 9250

Jan 16, 2010

I'm new to Linux, been running Ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop, love it. I set up a dual boot with XP on my desktop, but it's seemingly impossible to get my ATI Radeon 9250 working with any reasonable performance with later versions of Ubuntu (as several more experienced users have assured me).

Does anyone know of decently easy-to-use distributions that work out-of-the-box (or without dedicating more hours of work) with the Radeon 9250?

I've tried Ubuntu 9.10, 8.04, and OpenSUSe, latest version. No dice.

Hardware :: Compile Your Own ATI Drivers In Debian Distros ?

Mar 4, 2009

This probably isnt the correct place to put this, But I can hardly understand how this forum is organized. And forget blogging, I dont even know what that is, let alone how to make one.

Anyway i see tons of requests for installing the ATI drivers in linux, I can only help with the debian based distros.

This was originally posted here http://www.mepis.org/node/13647

Quote:

Finally, after many days of research on how to install Ati proprietary drivers on Mepis 6.5 with 3D and dual-monitor enabled and my Radeon x1950Pro I have come to a successful install and i will share my method below.

My system specs are below.

I read a lot of documentation and tried many guides on Ubuntu/Mepis forums with no or limited results until I found a guide on a french Ubuntu forum that guided me to success.

I had to modify the guide to my needs since it was aimed at installing on Ubunto 7.04 Feity Fawn. Since Mepis 6.5 is based in part on Ubuntu 6.06 the core parts of the guide were adequate.

If you follow every step to the letter eveything should work right away, and fast. (Make a backup of your xorg.conf before you do this!) Make sure your monitor(s) is setup or detected properly in xorg.conf

So here it is customized, adapted and translated to english:

1)Go here and download latest ati drivers: [url]

In our present case these are:

Quote:

ati-driver-installer-8.36.5-x86.x86_64.run

2) If you tried installing previous versions of fglrx Use synaptics search function and remove everything with "fglrx" in its name before we start.

3)Open a console

Here is a one liner you can use that does everything above in one shot:

4)Reboot PC (Will probalby be command line logon with no GUI (X))

Login to your user and then su to root and enter: aticonfig --initial or in my personal case

aticonfig --dtop=horizontal --overlay-on=1 --force-monitor=crt1,crt2

I noticed on some of my tests that sometimes the xorg.conf files dissapears during this process. Seems like a bug. In such a case restore your backup and repeat the aticonfig routine.

type

reboot

5)When you are rebooted you will have a working gui but no 3D acceleration yet. So open a console and su to root

kwrite /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Add:

To the end of your xorg.conf

CTRL-ALT BACKSPACE or Reboot

Test in console as root and you should have 3D

fglrxinfo

Ubuntu Networking :: Compile Drivers Or Hostapd From Source + Ath9k = No 11n

Nov 19, 2010

I've been running hostapd for a while in 11g mode with great success. Having upgraded the router machine to maverick today, I had a poke at getting hostapd working in 11n mode without too much fuss. From cursory reading of old forum posts, this appears to now be built in functionality without needing to compile drivers or hostapd from source - this is borne out by a few 11n-related lines in the default configuration file.

When adding those two lines to my config file, though, I get the same error message I did a few years ago when trying this out for the first time:
