I have installed fedora, the installation very well took place, only I have a problem to reach the system in graphical mode, and when I tap " startx " in the console it shows the following error:
Fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
I just installed Red Hat Linux Professional 8.0 in my VMWare, but I do not know how to start X Windows. I have tried to type "startx" on "RUN", but I get error message: Fatal Server error Server already active for display 0. If this server is no longer running, remove tmp/.X0-lock and start again.

However, every time I run startx to start the graphical interface, for a brief moment I can see (just before the screen is put in graphical mode) a lot of error messages. How can this be? I use slack 12 a lot and have reinstalled this distro many times. However the described behavior always repeats.

I am trying to install FC14 on a Power 1800. I get hte message that installation stoped due to fatal error whn trying to install module.init.tool package.
This is a repetitive error. I burned a new CD, checked it but get the same error.
The exact message is: A fatal error occurred installing the module-init-tools package. This could indicate errors when reading the installation media. Installation cannot continue.
I must say, the RPMfusion version of the Nvdia driver package work better with FC10 than they did under FC9 for me, which is to say: they work at all. Still get corrupted output after a few hours of work, but I imagine that's just the underlying weakness of the Nvidia driver bubbling up. Either way, now I have other problems:
First off, the Intel driver for my onboard video setup has stopped working entirely. The attempt to bring up X on the Intel setup gets me to the KDE login screen and locks the machine up hard (poweroff required). A look at the xorg.0.log shows that the server seems to be stuck in a loop trying to determine the valid video properties for the session.
Here's my xorg.conf, BTW. I have it setup to perform different configurations depending on which DefaultServerLayout line gets uncommented (lines 4 - 6). If anybody has a better way of doing this, I'm all ears. While we're on my xorg.conf, pleas view lines 64-67 and/or 75-77. This is my quickie way of changing drivers (again, all ears) which brings us to the next problem, neither the nv or nouveau drivers work with my system. Interestingly enough, both drivers tend to fail in the same relative spot in the process, I think. Please refer to line 207 of this xorg.0.log with the nv driver or line 140 of this xorg.0.log from the nouveau setup. Either way, both sessions die with the same message: (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. Fatal server error: no screens found Gotta go, x session getting corrupt,,,
- is there a way to set the default user in console login so that all needed is to press enter(or event without it) to be able to input the password for that user - also is it possible to console login without password, by just inputting user name and pressing enter how to put startx for that user right on login, so that the user doesn't input the command manually

On my Laptop i am trying to Install alongside my current 9.10 installation and i keep getting the errors illustrated in the screenies. View 8 Replies View RelatedThis box is running 10.04 server, it's been running perfectly for almost 6 weeks. It's only function in life is running MailArchiva which is an ediscovery package, runs very well. Anyhow, yesterday the boss tells me he wants to do something else so the last thing I did was an apt-get update and an apt-get upgrade, no errors were observed, I seem to remember like 8 updates were available, this is what I've normally done in the past to keep it current. The last thing I did after that was shutdown -r now.
This morning I can't get into the box, I reconnected a monitor to it and this is the error I'm getting when it stops after about 9 lines into the boot process;

This is a mystery to me, the system is not encrypted. The only stuff that is belongs to MailArchiva. Anyhow someone evidently made off with my install cd so I am downloading another to see if I can repair this but I have no idea what broke.
Last night software updater notification showed 29 updates. I was building a liveCD image so decided create the image first then install the updates. After the updates were finished, I did a reboot because some packages required it, I logged on successfully, then I shutdown for the night. This morning when I executed the same command used to create the liveCD image, I get the following error.

I updated the latest kernel and other new maintenance tonight and started getting this error at boot...doesn't appear to be hindering anything. My encrypted partitions (luks, ext4) still open and are accessible.

I have been a regular user of Linux and have never faced a problem like this one, after I installed Linux Fedora 14 on my laptop. After installation, almost all the softwares that I was earlier using with the earlier version of Fedora are stopping immediately on starting and exitting with a fatal error. eg. when I try to run paraview, it immediately closes after giving some fatal error. Similar is the case with gambit, tecplot and mayaVi softwares.With my earlier version of Fedora, I was not facing any problem. But since I installed Fedora 14, I am facing this problem. I even tried by downloading and installing latest version of paraview and mayaVi from the net, but the latest versions also on starting give the same error : fatal error, and exit the program.

I have been following this tutorial [URL]. When I get to the end of the installation and try to install GRUB to the /boot partition I have set up it throws a fatal error at me. No explanation other than it can't write to the specified location. I double checked all the partition settings which were the same as the tutorial then skipped the GRUB installation and finished. The only thing I can think of that might be wrong is that the 250MB partition size specified for /boot in the tutorial is too small.

How do I "run recovery"? Edit: Ok so it looks like I had som bad ram in my system that caused this - I found a site that told me to do this:
rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db*
rpm rebuilddb
yum clean all
I did this but now when I try something like yum install firefox it pulls in a ton of already installed packages.
I'm tring to run AMDOverdriveCtrl, since they don't have an RPM file for Fedora i tried to compile from source i followed the instruction in the readme files run the make command

View 14 Replies View Relatedi tries to upgrade my fc14 to fc15 using preupgrade. during installation packages process i get an error "fatal error bla-bla-bla installing netsniff-ng-...". i've booted in fc14 (in emergency mode) and manually removed old netsniff-ng package and installed new package. after that i've booted in preupgrade process. it finishes successfull. but now i can't boot in fc15 - i get "kernel panic" error. i've opened grub.conf and there is no 'initrd' section and there is no initramfs for fc15 in /boot folder. i've tried to boot fc15 with initrd /initramfs-bla-bla-fc14.i686.PAE.img. fc15 booted, but i think something wrong, because network not working, and there is only "lo" in ifconfig. what can i do?

Fatal server error: Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). Server aborting I think it has something to do with the amd/ati catalyst driver and korganizer. My video card is XFX Radeon HD5670. I have Fedora 14 x86_64 latest update with xorg 1.9.1-3. I tried catalyst 10.9, 10.10, 10.11, and kernel 2.6.35.6-45.fc14.x86_64, 2.6.35.6-48.fc14.x86_64, 2.6.35.9-64.fc14.x86_64. Same problem.
If I use vesa driver, or from another PC with proprietary nvidia driver, no problem. Open source radeon driver works ok but sometimes the display turns off and I can't get back the display. And I need 3D. I scoured through the forum and followed the instructions exactly:

Installed windows xp on new ata Hdd and added ubunto next; got error 18 ; used the Fixmbr at the win console for repair; able now to access my windows but not the Ubunto; I guess Grub removed on repair. Would like to bring ubunto back.

1. Some one told me to change the xorg.conf file but i failed because there is no such file in the given location
2. Some one told me to create it using system-config-display but for fedora 14 there is no package for that

Tonight I installed ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) on an external usb harddrive with a dvd I burned and I used my older desktop. I disconnected all internal and external drives first so everything had to be put on the usb drive I selected (only option available). I used the option to load extra software, use the entire hard drive, and let the software do it's thing. I basically had no options where to put things and it didn't have much choice.
When I boot the usb drive on my laptop (win 7 64 bit) by telling the bios to boot to it first... I get an error: modprobe: FATAL Could not load /lib/modules 2.6.35-22 generic modules No such file or directory. This message appears twice and then it does boot into ubuntu and seems to work fine. I'm new to this OS so that is an uneducated guess but the things I have done seem to be working. So exactly what is this error referring too? Is there a way to fix the problem or do I just ignore it.
