Debian Installation :: Cannot Write Grub To Boot Location - Fatal Error

Jun 10, 2011

I have been following this tutorial [URL]. When I get to the end of the installation and try to install GRUB to the /boot partition I have set up it throws a fatal error at me. No explanation other than it can't write to the specified location. I double checked all the partition settings which were the same as the tutorial then skipped the GRUB installation and finished. The only thing I can think of that might be wrong is that the 250MB partition size specified for /boot in the tutorial is too small.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot With Debian - Write /dev/sda1 To The Bootloader Rather Than /dev/hda1 Using Grub-mkconfig?

Aug 19, 2010

I installed Debian on my PC and then installed Ubuntu. This worked fine and I could dual boot between the two. The PATA disk was /dev/hda on debian and (I think) /dev/sda on Ubuntu. I copied the entire disk to a sata disk using dd from knoppix and put the PATA one to one side. Now the Ubuntu comes up fine but when I boot debian, it complains about references to /dev/hda1, which is present in grub - root=/dev/hda1. Debian now expects sda references rather than hda references. How do I persuade Ubuntu to write /dev/sda1 to the bootloader rather than /dev/hda1 using grub-mkconfig?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Server Will Not Boot - Fatal Error

Oct 5, 2010

This box is running 10.04 server, it's been running perfectly for almost 6 weeks. It's only function in life is running MailArchiva which is an ediscovery package, runs very well. Anyhow, yesterday the boss tells me he wants to do something else so the last thing I did was an apt-get update and an apt-get upgrade, no errors were observed, I seem to remember like 8 updates were available, this is what I've normally done in the past to keep it current. The last thing I did after that was shutdown -r now.

This morning I can't get into the box, I reconnected a monitor to it and this is the error I'm getting when it stops after about 9 lines into the boot process;
modprobe: FATAL: Error inserting padlock_sha (/lib/modules/2.6.32-24-server/kernel/drivers/crypto/padlock-sha.ko): No such device.
This is a mystery to me, the system is not encrypted. The only stuff that is belongs to MailArchiva. Anyhow someone evidently made off with my install cd so I am downloading another to see if I can repair this but I have no idea what broke.

Fedora Installation :: GRUB/LILO: Getting The Location Of The Boot Partition?

Feb 13, 2009

I somehow recalled a rule re the location of the boot partitions with LILO being required to be in the first part of the drive (1024 cylinders, it seems) and I found it indeed in an old doc:

Boot Partition: Your boot partition ought to be a primary partition, not a logical partition. This will ease recovery in case of disaster, but it is not technically necessary. It must be of type 0x83 "Linux native". If you are using lilo, your boot partition must be contained within the first 1024 cylinders of the drive. (Typically, the boot partition need only contain the kernel image.) Is this still valid in GRUB, esp in Fedora 10?

Debian Installation :: Squeeze- Grub Can't Dual Boot -ntoskrnl.exe Error

Jun 7, 2010

I cannot count how many times I have re-installed squeeze, and do all kinds of fixes to grub, but no joy. Every time, there is this ntoskrnl.exe error, and to re-install it. I thought my WIN XP may be corrupted, so I reinstalled it, and updated it with sp3 and all updates. Then I re-installed squeeze (reformatting all partitions). At the end, the installer ask if I want to install grub to mbr. I replied yes. After reboot, only the 2.6.32.3-amd64 and the recovery kernels show up on the grub screen, no winxp.OK, I booted into squeeze kernel and looked at the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file, and there winxp is not included in /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober section. In terminal, I typed

#os-propber and it found winxp in /dev/sda1
then I typed
#update-grub

and now /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober now show winxp.I rebooted, and winxp shows on the grub screen, and I chose winxp. It came back with "ntoskrnl.exe ...error... re-install ntoskrnl..."Here are the details:

fdisk -l

Ubuntu Installation :: Error 29: Disk Write Error Then Trying Again Windows Seems To Boot But It Takes Much Longer

Aug 17, 2010

i finally decided to updgrade from Hardy Heron to Lucid Lynx. for this i made a backup of my old install, then i couldnt find my Lucid CD so i used a Karmic one to partition my old ext3 to ext4. There were some errors but after trying a few times it worked. Installed Karmic, rebooted (worked fine), downloaded all updates - (did NOT reboot to let updates take effect) and upgraded to Lucid.

Everything went fine so far. Now when i try to boot into Lucid the system hangs, i've also got a windowsXP partition on there so i tried booting that, first grub tells me Error 29: Disk write error then trying again windows seems to boot but it takes much longer than it should and seems to hang.

Then i tried Karmic and Lucid LiveCD (which i found in the meantime) none of the LiveCDs make it to boot after about 20 minutes. (previously they worked fine)looking at the errors it seems to be something about the harddrive. Why the harddrive would stop the LiveCD booting is a mystery to me but the same messages appear when i select Recovery from the Grub menu so i guess the problem is related.

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Error "modprobe: FATAL Could Not Load /lib/modules 2.6.35-22 Generic Modules No Such File Or Directory"

Apr 14, 2011

Tonight I installed ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) on an external usb harddrive with a dvd I burned and I used my older desktop. I disconnected all internal and external drives first so everything had to be put on the usb drive I selected (only option available). I used the option to load extra software, use the entire hard drive, and let the software do it's thing. I basically had no options where to put things and it didn't have much choice.

When I boot the usb drive on my laptop (win 7 64 bit) by telling the bios to boot to it first... I get an error: modprobe: FATAL Could not load /lib/modules 2.6.35-22 generic modules No such file or directory. This message appears twice and then it does boot into ubuntu and seems to work fine. I'm new to this OS so that is an uneducated guess but the things I have done seem to be working. So exactly what is this error referring too? Is there a way to fix the problem or do I just ignore it.

Debian :: Grub Error 22 - Multi Boot (Win XP Home And Lenny AMD64)

Sep 1, 2010

I have a dual boot computer. I seem to be having a bit of a problem with Grub lately. Every time I do any kind of update in Debian Lenny AMD 64 it borks my Grub. The first time I had to change a few lines in menu.lst (hd1,1 to hd0,1), no problem. The second time, things went downhill fast and G-Parted was giving me errors on my NTFS partitions. I had to do an XP repair, fixboot, and I had to reinstall Grub completely to the MBR.

Now, I having a "Grub Loading stage1.5. Grub loading, please wait.... Error 22". All I did was update Debian Linux and shut down. From my initial searches this is an error relating to not finding the correct partition. I have booted with a G-Part CD and it shows all my partitions. I do have a Windows XP Home boot cd if I need it. Here is my partition outline if you need it:

/dev/sda1 NTFS (Windows) flags--boot
/dev/sda2 Ext3 (Linux)
/dev/sda3 FAT32 (shared space between Windows and Linux)

Debian :: Unable To Boot From Grub 'error Unknown Command Initrd'

Feb 24, 2009

I'm running Debian testing and after a recent software update, suddenly I can no longer boot into my single Linux kernel image anymore. I did look at the software update before I did it and I don't believe that it removed any software packages. When I try to boot into my linux 2.6.26-1-amd64 image, I get the following message from grub:"error: unknown command `initrd'"..The same error appears if I try to boot into single-user mode. I have a Windows XP partition on the same hard disk and I am still able to boot into that from grub. I've searched the net and haven't really found my same problem replicated anywhere. I would imagine that the problem is just that somehow the initrd package got removed in my last software update, but again I don't recall seeing any software that the update planned to remove.

Any thoughts on how I would go about fixing this problem? Since I'm unable to get into Linux at all, I imagine I'll have to use a LiveCD to get in and fix the problem, but I don't know where to begin looking.

Debian Configuration :: Hard Drive 1 Wont Load - Gives Me A Fatal Error

May 14, 2011

My problem is that my debian in hard drive 1 wont load, gives me a fatal error.

This is my computer:
Hard drive 1 (1TB): broken debian 333gb, windows7 666GB (approximately)
Hard drive 2 (250GB): debian (working fine, im using it now).

Details: I tried to install some webcam software thing and I think somehow i deleted some system files... ...So now when I start my computer, grub loads and i choose Debian on hard drive 1,i click it but when it goes through the list of things, it says

FATAL ERROR /lib/modules/2.6.32-5-amd64/kernel/fs/fuse/fuse.ko: No such file or directory

And it just goes to a blank screen with a blinking cursor.

Now that's not all. I did something else wrong... I ran Gparted from a usb stick to create an extra partition on hard drive 1 because i was trying to install another linux on it or something so I can access my computer.

But, when I tried to shrink it and create an extra partition on the disk of about 150gb, it was taking so long and i read that it may take about 40 hours, so i turned it off after a few hours. So, I may have created more problems than my original problem.... I can still boot into Windows 7 though.

So now i have:
Hard drive 1 (1TB): broken debian about 120gb, windows7 666gb (approximately), free partition
Hard drive 2 (250GB): debian (working fine, im using it now).

Also, of interest: When I look at the folders of the messed up debian, there is nothing in the /lib/modules/2.6.32-5-amd64/kernel folder. Empty.

So basically. my problem is that I get the fatal error, and then maybe i create some extra problem by stopping the partitioning when it wasnt done. so please help me try to fix the fatal error first
