I've been using opensuse 11.2 and windows xp at parallel. After I decide to reinstall windows, I got the error saying "invalid partition table" after the first restart of windows xp installation.
I tried to use windows system recovery console and committing fixmbr and fixboot commands, but didn't work.
After all, i boot with opensuse livecd to run the grub and got my opensuse back.
How can I installed windows on a opensuse installed system? My plan was first to install windows xp, then opensuse again.

I need to use the fixmbr command to fix my windows installation. I'd like to restore grub to its former state after doing so. I have searched how to do this and since my configuration differs slightly, I'd rather get more specific instructions. Right now this is what menu.lst looks like:
Code:
titleUbuntu 8.04.1, kernel 2.6.24-21-generic
root(hd0,2)
kernel/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-21-generic root=UUID=0c5d1c9c-70bb-4f61-a0ad-7dc5e59d9713 ro quiet splash

Im probally just being a noob here but for the projects sake I thought it would be good to identify this problem. I have an old advent laptop and I tried to install Opensuse from DVD on it. I followed the installation as normal but when I tried to boot it said some sort of check was forced and then I have to enter the admin/root password upon doing this I got the message system repair # in red. I have tried to repair the system through the installation DVD and tried re-installing it but I still get the same message.

Now I would like to uninstall it and use Windows XP instead. But when booting from the winxp disk, the only partition I can see, is the flash drive I am installing from. I was told to uninstall grub, but the fixmbr command doesn't do anything for me.

I was using the disk utility on Ubuntu 10.04 and wanted to make by 500GB external NTFS formatted USB drive into 1 x 50GB FAT32 and 1 x 450GB NTFS. I clicked the option that said format or create a partition and it basically wiped the whole thing in a split second leaving me with 500GB of seemingly empty space. Obviously the files are still there but I cannot boot the drive to view anything. I have downloaded testdisk, but don't know how to use it, but I am sure there is a relatively simple solution here. I am currently repairing the boot sector of the drive as Test Disk showed the drive as "no type" i.e. not FAT/NTFS/ext4 etc., but shows the correct amount of used space though, but I cannot view anything err go, I cannot use the undelete command as yet.

I've used rEFIt and to create a dual boot system on a new MacBook Pro 7. 1 following the directions in the community forum. I can book ubuntu and mac os x fine. However, the MBR boot table shows an error in the partition map.
[Code]...
How can I fix this, rEFIt and gptsync are unable to repair the MBR error... Will this cause problems (since MBR shows the ubuntu boot partition overlapping the OSX partition)?

I have mounted an NFS share with ISO images on my kvm Server. If i connect such a iso to a VM (using virt-manager) for installing a operating system i get the following error on startup: Error starting domain: internal error Process exited while reading console log output: char device redirected to /dev/pts/1 qemu: could not open disk image /mnt/iso/public/Linux/Distributions/Debian/debian-504-amd64-netinst.iso: Permission denied
The problem is definitly that kvm (or qemu or libvirt-bin, i don't know) tries to set permissions (rwx owner for libvirt-qemu, --- for kvm group, --- for other) on the file, although it has read permissions. Is it possible to change this behavior?

I had been running ubuntu 9.03 for quite some time, but for school I needed windows, so after installing windows on a free'd partition, it will not give me the ubuntu boot option and loads staright into windows(vista)[typical windows]. I am aware that one is able to repair it with an ubuntu boot disk, but my dvd-rom isn't functioning. My question is, is it possible to repair it with a USB stick instead?

I recently upgraded to 11.04 on my WUBI and after a while the OS just stopped booting. Every time I try to boot it drops to the grub command line. I can't boot manually because it says file not found when I enter "linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic" And I can't repair the installation through the LiveCD as it gives the error message:"(initramfs) mount: mounting /dev/loop0 on //filesystem.squashfs failed: Input/output error. Can not mount /dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs".Can anyone help with restoring the OS?

I am currently in a country where the internet speed is roughly 15KB at best, if at all. So I cant download the 9.10 live CD. My grub2 broke when I reinstalled windows (because its so virus prone). This guide: [URL]. Says how to repair grub2 using grub2 live CD. Currently I have access to a 6.10 Ubuntu CD but when I try to mount the boot partition I get an error saying that the filesystem has unknown options. I think that the latest filesystem didn't exist back then and even if that would work. Can I reinstall grub2 using grub? Or is there any possibility to download an ultra small linux live system image with grub2? it seems all ubuntu variations come in 500MB+ packs.

I get this message when I boot
init: udevtrigger main process (440) terminated with status 1
init: udevtrigger post-stop process (449) terminated with status 1
init: udevtrigger main process (447) killed by TERM signal
I'm now on the live cd, is there anyway to either fix that, or just repair the system? I tried booting in safe mode too, none of those started up either.

I have Ubuntu 11.04 on an AMD64 machine (HP Pavilion DM1). It worked fine for a while but recently any time I try to invoke the Update Manager.I have had some incidents of being unable to resume after sleep (until I disabled the catalyst driver) so possibly in one of those that file got hosed.

OK, so about a week ago or so my Ubuntu 10.04 install no longer recognizes my iPod Touch or Iphone. I have had no luck getting them to work. i REALLY do not want to fresh install Ubuntu. Is there a way I can like repair or restore (a la "Window$") that will fix the OS itself without removing any programs or settings?

I think a recent update to 10.04 somehow has broken my installation. When I turn on the machine, it just sits at the splash screen with the white dots turning orange from left to right as if it is going to boot up.
I have tried letting it sit there but after half an hour it still remains the same. I have tried booting into recovery mode but that fails somewhere along the startup process. Is there a way to 'repair broken installation' when booting up with live cd? I have been able to get to that option and I am trying to avoid doing a fresh install if possible.

When I attempt to boot into Ubuntu 9.10, I get the error: "Error 15: File not found" I know the reason for this - I deleted it - Doh. A latest upgrade told me I didn't have enough room in the boot partition to install the latest files, so I thought it would be a marvellous idea to remove the old stuff, to give it some room. I obviously deleted something that I needed by mistake. I was using synaptic to do the remove & thought I would be safe. A good learning experience.
In grub menu I have options: Kernel: 2.6.31-15 - generic and also its recovery option, both of which get the same error. (It's a dual boot with XP as the original os). Ideally I'd just like to get the latest working kernel and put it somewhere appropriate, rather than do a full install. Is this possible and if so how? I have a separate boot partition (in dev/sda5), swap (sda7) and Linux (sda6).

I am running a 64bit 10.10 with gnome. Its pretty much a fresh install. I saw a project called CAINE, it looked neat so I'd thought I'd give it a try, something in the installation mucked up. Now when I open the Software center I get a message telling me "Items can no be installed or removed until the package catalog is repaired" I click repair and I get this error message: E:I wasn't able to locate file for the caine-from-deb package. This might mean you need to manually fix this package.:So I thought I'd give it a go using synaptic package manager, it gives me these error messages: E: caine: subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 2 E: caine-from-deb: subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 2.I am currently unable to install or update any software at the moment so I really need help to get this fixed.

I have installed windows 7 back to its former state in after foolishly messing around with some installation options in an Ubuntu install (this caused windows to disappear, and me to repair it). In *repairing* windows, I overwrote my grub file and the boot options for Ubuntu, so that it looks something like this:
Disk 1: Primary Partition - Windows 7
Disk 1: Secondary Partition - Windows 7
Disk 1: Secondary Partition - Free Space ( this is where I have Ubuntu installed)
How can I repair my grub file so that I can boot into my Ubuntu installation?

I have a laptop with 250 GB SATA HD that has the following:
Win7 Pro installed first with sda1=system reserved partition, sda2=C: drive, sda5=separate software application programs to differentiate from Windows' Program Files. Ubuntu 9.10 was installed next (sda6=common swap partition for all Linux distros, sda7=Ubuntu root, sda8=Ubuntu home). Then Opensuse 11.2 was installed with sda12=root and sda13=home. Finally FedoraCore11 was installed with sda9=boot, sda10=root and sda11=home. Ubuntu and Suse have grub loader in their own root partitions.
Suse's grub menu controls all OS's. From this grub menu I can select Windows or any other Linuxes. Suse uses legacy grub because it was installed right after Ubuntu 9.10 which uses (legacy) grub.
Here is opensuse's grub menu:
# Modified by YaST2. Last modification on Wed Mar 31 11:49:28 EST 2010
# THIS FILE WILL BE PARTIALLY OVERWRITTEN by perl-Bootloader
# Configure custom boot parameters for updated kernels in /etc/sysconfig/bootloader

I initially had a dual boot where I could decide to either boot into Windows 7 or Ubuntu 10.04. It work seamlessly. At some point, however, when I booted into Windows, it just seem to only load it "half" in the sense that the desktop just turned black (but when ctrl-alt-del was hit I did receive a screen with the different options).
I suspected there was a problem with grub and proceeded to restore the Windows bootloader by booting into the Windows CD and repairing the computer by entering the commands:
After restarting I suddenly do not have the option to boot into Ubuntu (where did it go?) and booting automatically into Windows the original problem persists.
Any idea what happened here and how I can restore things?
