I'm new to fedora, and I had an issue when I installed Fedora 11. I remembered how to make a user and password in terminal, and I had to look up the command to start GUI, but the two I found, gdm and startx, were not recognised. How do I start the GUI?
View 14 RepliesI tried to kind of beautify my CentOS 5.3. So I kind of break some rules ( like compiling tar balls.. ). To cut it short, I installed avant window navigator ( source, compile, etc ). Before that I also installed compiz ( which made my desktop kind of much more *alive* ). Problem is there are some bugs on AWN, then I think my webcam got affected too ( not showing proper display ). I then decided to uninstall compiz thru YUM. After this, restarted my system, then whooppss my Gnome, won't load properly. the AWN was gone, then the bottom part of my desktop was just black. I only got a top menu, which whatever application I open there's no top bar on it ( where you see the name of the window ). Also every application just shows up on my upper left corner of the screen. So I definitely broke it. So I switched to another session ( Ctrl Alt F2 ) then went into a terminal. I tried to load again another X Session ( Ctrl Alt F8/F9 ), but nothing comes up, am I doing that wrong?
Now in cases like this where the GUI is not loading correctly, what work-arounds are usually made? I did some tweaks by guessing everything will kind of reset by renaming my gnome hidden folders, but no luck. What to do on this situations? Is it possible to kind of switch to pure terminal session, uninstall whole Gnome package there, remove some settings, reinstall Gnome and everything will be ok again? Or is it possible if Gnome is broke like kind of start a KDE session? How's this things relate to XOrg11.conf something? Could anyone just give like some overview like which sits on top of what.
Since I can't fix my problem yesterday I just reformatted laptop and reinstalled 5.3 with Virtualization checked, and I noticed my kernel says "xen". I thought of trying this builtin virtualization software because I had problems with VMWare before also.
Just downloaded f10 last night. Install goes fine, but when I boot it goes to root command line. I enter in startx and recieve and error.

I have installed fedora, the installation very well took place, only I have a problem to reach the system in graphical mode, and when I tap " startx " in the console it shows the following error:
Fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
I was in the process of installing Fedora 12 when it came to the "Operating Systems List". Here it recognised only Windows and none of the other 4 Linux distros already installed. Looking at the option to "add" and then given the drop down list for each partition, can someone tell me what to enter in the LABEL box for these partitions, or how to find what to enter in these boxes to enable these distros to be booted?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI was installing Fedora 13 on my computer as I need it for a class I'm taking but wanted to keep Ubuntu (10.04) as well. So now the setup is: Windows 7 on sda, Ubuntu and Fedora on sdb.I did not install the bootloader when Fedora 13 prompted to. Running sudo os-prober and sudo update-grub only finds Windows 7.I know I can manually add it in 40_custom but have no idea how to go ab out that. The output of my fdisk -l is as follows:

I installing Fedora 12. I did ALL the same as in the installation guide, GRUB installed into MBR. And after installation and rebooting - nothing happens, after BIOS messages there is nothing - computer hangs. GRUB seems to be not installedI have 2 hard disks. At first I tried to install on the 2-nd drive(it is slave). Afterward I detach one disk and try with only one hard disk(it is master). Nothing changes - computer hangs.

I tested the disk with seagate diag it reports no errors. I used Partion manager and created three partions & formatted them. Other distros see the disk , I am trying crunch bang it installed with no fuss. I have googled & looked in known issues pages.
Currently running F10 on a RAID1 software raid array in Linux (not hardware or BIOS). I used the F13 install disk to boot and selected install/upgrade. Problem is that the Anaconda portion never sees the RAID device.
I tried passing the "nodmraid" argument to the kernel during boot. Other research suggested that the auto=md switch should be appended to the mdadm.conf file. No results from either solution.
Anaconda does not see the /dev/md0 or /dev/md1 and consequently it only offers an installation option.
What I would prefer is to upgrade.
I installed fedora on one of my three hard drives and it seems that something went wrong with the other two. Fedora recognizes the other drives but it seems the data on those drives is not there anymore. The below images are screen shots from my computer folder and disk utility program. I tried to look through Fedora documentation but I did not find a solution to my case.

The only readable error I have gotten is from suse. Said something about an unreadable file system. All of the others have just hung at some point during the live cd boot.
I have now tried live cds of the following and none have worked.
Its a stock alienware that I bought 3 years ago. The only change I have made is updating the ram, which I bought directly from dell to make sure it was compatible. The alienware is an intel core 2 duo, 4 gigs of ram, 160gb HD, dual sli nvidia graphics cards. not sure about the mother board, could figure it out if its necessary. Is there any reason the hardware wouldn't be supported?
I'm trying to set up a pc to rip my old LPs. Dual PIII 600MHZ that I loaded Fedora 9 onto to see if it would work and it seemed OK so I downloaded Fedora 11 to put that on. Now it is not loading the kernel module for my Soundblaster 16 ISA pnp card although it was fine in Fedora 9. I can do a $ modprobe snd-sb16and that seems to work fine in that I can

I installed fedora on my laptop and everything went fine, i installed my bradcom drivers and rebooted.
Next step was kmod for nvidia but when i rebooted i couldn't use fedora anymore cause loading freezes at some point. same thing happens to my desktop pc, where i solved the problem booting with an older kernel (this time i have an error saying "eth0 link not ready" or something like that). Everytime i try to boot with a more recent kernel loading freezes. The point is...i can go through with my desktop pc by choosing another kernel, but i can't even boot with my laptop.
I am trying to install fedora on my semi aging PC. It installed fine and prompted me to reboot. So I did, but then as soon as it tries to load the grub menu, it gives me the following error: no such device: 2cb414b7-7620-48a9-93af-f03aec3495e4How do I restore grub and make it work? Right now I am using the livecd to type this. I do not really need the grub loader since I am only running one OS, which is currently fedora. I recently had Ubuntu 10.04 which did not have grub (at least it is not shown during the boot) and suited me more than fine.

I'm trying to dual boot with Vista, didn't have this problem while dual booting with Windows 7. My computer is an Acer Aspire M5640, Core 2 Duo E7200, ATI 3450 video card.

From one of the prevous threads, one of the members said that i had to have 2 partitions on my HD. Currently, i already have 2 partitions. Can someone give me advice on what to do??
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a fancy new Quad Core Xeon machine here that I'm trying to install F10 x64 on. The installation went fine. When it reboots the first time, though, I get the dreaded Error Loading OS.
So I dug up my bookmark of the awesome Grub HOWTO here and followed the steps to install Grub manually. Alas, I get the same result after installing it. Even tried doing a makeactive (hd0) just in case, but no luck.
I did more searching and searched for "raid install" but didn't find anything helpful. So here I am... hoping somebody has some insight.
I have an Intel DG33TL MB, Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650, 8GB SuperTalent DDR2-800, and 4 Seagate 500GB hard disks. The disks are connected to a 3Ware 9650SE-4LPML and set for RAID0. I partitioned the drive in the following manner: 900GB for XP-Pro x64 (first install), 100 GB XP-Pro (installed second), and the remaining for FC10. After installing FC10 x64 using downloaded DVD .iso I am getting the following error on reboot:

I installed a software that is used for modeling purpose. After installation, it showed me the following error.

I hope i need to install some libraries. While i searched in google, i found some postings telling i should intall libmotif3 and some postings telling that openmotif should be installed. I dnt know what to do now as i dnt find both these libraries when i try to install with yum.
Someone kindly write me how to get this libXm.so.3 installed in fedora10.
I got a new laptop, this is the one: [URL] and decided that I wanted to go with Fedora instead of Ubuntu with this computer. The laptop runs win 7 64 bit so I'm trying to go with Fedora 64 but it will not boot. I first installed Fedora 12 64 bit from the DVD install and it would go to grub fine but when I boot the fedora os It just stops in the middle of the boot script. When it stops, the last 4 lines are:

I hadn't messed with it for a few weeks and yesterday I saw that 13 was out, so I downloaded and burnt the Fedora 13 64 bit CD. I popped it in, booted the computer and it did the same crap. It didn't stop at the same line but it was around a line with:

So I guess the kernel isn't loading properly or something. Do ya'll think I would be better off using the 32 bit?
I just installed fc14 on my laptop and am trying to install (mandelbulber) but i get this error.

Just installed Fedora 14. My HDD LED is flickering constantly about 7x a second. This only happens after I start X-windows and continues if I log out. Top shows dbus-daemon at 15% CPU. I'm sure this is causing it as it only starts after X-windows.

After finishing the install I am prompted with terminal. I logged in and did the following:

ubuntu with windows xp on my laptop. My problem is everytime I out of ubuntu, the vga driver seems to disappear. I can't start x server, and when go into windows xp, the screen is on very low resolution state. After go into win xp and reboot, I can boot either ubuntu or winxp normally, everything is okey again. In summary:- When go into XP and reboot, I can boot ubuntu and XP normally.- When go into ubuntu and reboot, I can only boot with very low resolution in XP and can not start x server if boot ubuntu

I am trying to install Fedora 12 x64 on my 27" iMac 10,1. I have tried both the installation dvd and the gnome live cd (both x64 i did not try the x86). On the installation dvd I get as far as the menu giving me the boot/install options - I have tried to install both with a basic video driver and the regular install/upgrade option - both times it begins loading components for the installer program (/sbin/loader) etc. After it loads sbin/loader and mounts the partitions it freezes with half the screen being the terminal txt beforehand and the other half being just a standard fedora logo w/blue background. It is not much different when I try the live-cd the only different is it does the exact same thing when the timer for automatic login is done. Any possible command line arguments that I could use to stop the graphical corruption?
