I want to install ubuntu 10.10 on my old laptop. I try to do this by usb stick, i came to the blue window boot device, there are 4 options to choose: Hard disk, cd-rom/dvd, floppy disk and lan boot. I tried all of them, but nothing happend.
View 5 RepliesI created a USB stick with Ubuntu 9.10, used it to boot a dell Inspiron 1550 laptop which has WinXP. I tested 9.10, everything went fine out of the box so to speak. But when I went back and tried to boot XP again I got a blue screen. XP starts in safe mode and no apparent problems are detectable but it will not start in Win normal mode anymore.

I click OK and the installer seems to finish nicely, except the terminal throws several errors along these lines (see photo):

I tried also with 10.04 LTS, the difference being that the install warning appears two or three times instead of once. Some results from googling (Ubuntu Forums, Ubiquity bug) suggest unchecking the initial update options. I am going to try this but I'm not sure if I'll be able to get the boot loader right (there seemed to be problems with this).
When i try to install Fedora 15 on a clean machine it freezes as soon as the pixelated load bar with the white, light blue and dark blue colors show.
I have tried several different versions of Fedora (64bit and 32bit) and have tried to burn it to a CD and/or DVD (For the larger version) and copying it to a usb pen with universal linux usb, liveUSB creator (from Fedora) and last one i don't remember the name on.
I have had Xp on my pc for a number of years, and have just installed Ubuntu as a dual boot os. I had a bit of trouble installing GRUB, but that's been resolved. My real problem is that now, after reinstalling GRUB, windows crashes at shutdown with a blue screen, as follows.

Have recently dual-installed F14 with Windows 7 on an Asus Eee PC 1015P, have been in and out of both systems satisfactorily a number of times. Now the Fedora boot just hangs up at the plain blue "f" screen. I have been prodding around looking at the problem of having no WLAN under Fedora but have not knowingly made any changes. I thought about just doing a re-install but am reluctant to risk messing things up further i.e damaging the Windows until I have Fedora working ok.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI get past the count down. The bars run across the top. Then my lcd monitor announces it has no signal and goes to sleep. Had this problem with earlier versions of Ubuntu, particularly 8.04. Was fixed in 8.10.

I don't really have any Linux experience. But I wanted to try it out. Now I'm afraid I did not set this up properly. Grub gives me 3 options:

When I select <Other> to boot into windows... it starts to try to boot... but then flashes a quick blue screen & restarts. I tried to boot into Window's normal mode, safe mode, and command line... all just restart fdisk -l gives the following:

I have searched and read threads about the Bitlocker, grub and TPM issues that might show up, but I can't draw any conclusions as some information contradict each other. To make sure I don't screw up my pc as thought I need to make a new post.
At work I'm supposed to run Windows 7 and encrypt the win-partition with Bitlocker. I have installed Windows, turned on the encryption and it ties into the TPM. But as I am moving over to the *nix department I want to run Ubuntu as dual boot to check everything rusn fine with all the systems I need. Before I installed Windows I partioned the disk:
1,5 GB for system/bitlocker requirement
147 GB for Windows, C:
85 GB which is empty where I intend to install Ubuntu (not formated yet)
I boot into Windows with my bitlocker/TPM key on an USB-stick. Without the usb-stick the pc won't boot. Now, before I try to install Ubuntu I want to make sure to do it the right so I don't mess up the Windows installation or won't be able to boot the pc at all.
There seem to be several "schools" to this. Some suggest I should have installed Ubuntu first, then Windows and then encrypt. Some say, no worries just fire away and install since you are not planning to read the windows-partition from Ubuntu. Or an alternative, install but make sure to deactive the encryption during installation. Some say, install but make sure grub is installed in (multiple choices) location.

I have desktop effects on and window shadows enabled. The main windows don't seem to follow this, nor does any taskbar pop-ups when you hover your mouse over them. I even set the shadow settings to high/annoying settings but I only see it on context/right-click menus.
I don't like the blue shadow because it is too light, but I can't seem to find where to change it. This seems to also apply to in-active windows as far as the size of the shadow but with a gray shadow instead. Still, if the desktop effects were effecting this, then the shadows I see should be large. Plus, desktop effects only give you one color choice with it just being darker on the active window. How to change this?
Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I got this error after: Reducing my Windows 7 partition by about 100gb. Creating a new partition (100gb) and copying my Ubuntu partition (10gb) to the new partition. After it was copied, and pasted, the original partition was deleted. I now had two partitions a new 100gb Ubuntu partition and a 600gb (or so) Windows 7 partition.
All of this was done using a bootable USB with Ubuntu 10.10 and GParted partition editor. Now when I boot I get the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key." error.
I'm trying to produce some screenshots of the screen in which there's a window playing a video in avi format. The problem is whenever I take a shot, the video window appears 'solid blue' in the output image. Is there any way or program with which I can capture the current frame of the video
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 from USB stick. I used System>Admin>USB Start up Disk Creator and a 9.10 .ISO version to create the bootable USB stick.
When I plug my USB key into my computer, my computer doesn't boot from it. I tried on several other computers and none of them boot from my USB key. The bios settings on all my computers boot from removable media first.
I repeated the above steps with a different USB key and I still can't boot from the USB key. When I browse the USB key directories, I can see all the necessary files to install ubuntu.
Last year, I didn't have trouble installing ubuntu 9.04 from USB key. Not sure what I'm doing wrong this time.
Can anyone tell me how to trouble shoot this problem?
I used unetbootin (on another machine) to put the ubuntu 10.04 minimal amd64 .iso onto a usb stick. I used it to install a minimal system on a new 64-bit laptop (dual booting with Windows 7). Now, when I turn on the machine I get my choice of OS. When I pick Ubuntu, I get a blinking cursor, the harddrive is accessed. Then the cursor disappears, the harddrive is quiet, and nothing else happens.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter several attempts at installing Ubuntu 10.10 on a Samsung N150 laptop/netbook, I have finally succeeded, but it won't boot without the installation USB drive being plugged in. Trying to boot it without the USB thumb drive it just stops at a black screen and does nothing.
With the USB drive in, it doesn't actually load up the installer, as you would expect, but boots normally into Ubuntu. Once booted, you can remove the drive and it runs fine without it. When you plug it in, it sees it as /dev/sdb, and the only hard drive is also seen as /dev/sdb. So it never mounts it. It can mount any other USB thumb drive normally.
I have a USB stick with a mechanical write protection (a small switch that disables writing on the stick). I have installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 on this device usung the startup drive creator. If the switch is in the position that allows writing, Ubuntu boots as expected. But if I switch to write protection, I only see a blinking cursur. Because it is a live system on the stick I expected that it should work as well, because nothing should be written to the stick. Does anyone have an idea why it behaves like this and how I can change it?
View 9 Replies View RelatedBefore: I had 2 os's ubuntu and windows installed on my system. Recently, I decided to install ubuntu to a flash drive. All went well except grub was not installed to the flash drive, but appended the existing grub setup on my hard drive.
Now: Even if I set the default system in grub as windows, or the original ubuntu install, my system will not boot unless the usb stick is plugged in. I get message. Error: grub rescue: My ideal solution: To stop grub searching for my flashdrive before loading the boot menu, and if possible to write grub to the flash stick.
Can Ubuntu install and boot from external HD while still booting windows off internal HD?In an attempt to spread Ubuntu my friend wants to use ubuntu off an external HD and still have windows fully operational on the internal HD. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have downloaded the "debian-7.8.0-amd64-netinst.iso" from the official website. I then used dd to create a bootable usb stick. The usb stick is detected by the HP Proliant server but it does not boot from it, even if no other OS is present (so boot order is not the problem, and even if it was, i checked the bios). I tried the original iso in a Virtualbox environment and it worked without a problem.
I then tried creating the usb stick in Windows using "Unetbootin" and "LinuxLive Creator". When I insert the stick into the HP this time it boots from it and all is good. I can not use this approach though, because I want to automate the installation until I can SSH onto the server. But somehow unetbootin and linuxlivecreator overwrite my modified debian isos preseed file (which also works perfectly on a Virtualmachine).I also used dd to create a Ubuntu usb stick and that works without a problem on the HP Proliant.
I burned a live dvdrw with the hybrid live cd of debian 8.1 gnome and installed Debian onto the 32gb usb stick like this
8gb for /
22 for /home
2gb for swap
after chrooting into the usb stick with the live dvd-rw and installing grub2 there again cause the installation couldn't do it without chrooting first.. I wasn't able to boot from the laptop I installed Debian with but I could on my Desktop PC.

I am trying to boot Fedora15 using a USB stick. It fails to boot properly It works fine when I boot Fedora 14 using the same usb stick. I've attached some screenshots. Trying to run it on a Lenovo T500 2081CTO with an ATI graphics card.
View 2 Replies View RelatedInstalled ubuntu 10.4 over previous ubuntu on Intel 945G. After installation and reboot the system does not boot: "no bootable device - insert boot disk and press any key".
Installation was done from USB-stick, prepared by UNETBOOTin. I have two HD's, one used for system + storage, another one just for storage. I manually deleted previous system partitions of previous ubuntu install in system HD. The system HD had about 1/3 of free and unallocated space for system partitions, which ubuntu installer created during the installation.
I tried to reinstall grub from bootable USB-stick and it succeeded but it did not help. The system is still not bootable.
I have used ubuntu for years and never happened something like this. Am I missing something or is ubuntu missing something???
HW failure is ofcourse possible but I am quite skeptical about it because Live ubuntu from USB-stick works well.
i had a working multi-boot system, vista on sda1,2; swap sda3; ext=sda4; ubuntu sda5; fedora sda6; data sda7 - i mount the data partition when using all of the linux releases so i don't have to have multiple copies of music, docs, etc. everything has worked fine until yesterday. i tried to install fc12 on sda6, replacing fc11. it required me to format sda6 as ext4. i wasn't sure where i had grub installed, but have a backup of menu.lst in data (sda7), so figured i could let it install to mbr or wherever it wanted to by default. when the install completed and i reboot, i get a black screen and these messages: CLIENT MAC ADDR: 00 19 XX XX XX GUID: XXXXX PXE-E53:
No boot filename received
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent.
No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key I tried reinstalling fc12, same exact errors. I then thought maybe the problem had something to do with ext4 partition mixed in with ext3's, so i installed mepis on the sda6, and let it write grub to mbr (i think, not really sure where it wrote it). anyway, i still get the identical black screen. no grub type menu or anything. the screen used to show "DHCP for a few seconds", but doesn't anymore after i disconnected the ethernet cable.........

I downloaded the .iso then used the "make startup disc" feature in my Mint 9 desktop machine to make a usb install disk. All appears well at that point. When I try to boot from the usb stick, I get an error message as follows:

View 1 Replies View RelatedIn order to try to rescue a USB stick which has probably a corrupted allocation table, I would like to get the device.I'm using Ubuntu 10 as a guest in VirtualBox, Host: Win7. Windows just tells me that the USB is not formatted.When tail -f /var/log/messages and I insert the USB stick, there won't be anything appended.
fdisk -l does not show anything.

When I plug in my 8 GB SanDisk Cruzer USB stick into my desktop box, the KDE Device Notifier fails to recognize it. It will recognize every other USB stick. "fsck" reports no errors. I can mount it manually. I can read and write to it. The Device Notifier on my netbook recognizes it. So does another desktop box. By the way this started recently so I suspect some software update.
