Ubuntu Installation :: Refresh - Restore Current Installation Without FULL Reinstallation

Apr 7, 2011

I installed Ubuntu Lucid Lynx a while ago. but then upgraded it to 10.10

I don't have the CD with me right now and i need to fix some mistakes of mine (being a n00b to ubuntu) urgently i.e. i can't wait for morning. Is there anyway i can rollback to the time when my ubuntu installation was in mint condition?

One more thing. Let me tell you my mistake. Almost a month ago i installed Apache2 on my Laptop (for LAMP). and now i have to install Apache Tomcat for JSP development. but the problem is that the files made by Apache2 and the PHP5 installation i made are not removed with

Code:

Code:

So now the apache2 files are superseding the Apache Tomcat. hence i cannot distuinguish between apache2 or apache tomcat when i goto:

Code:

So if anyone has a way of ridding my laptop of this disease without complete overhaul, please post your replies here.

Until then, I will have to defect back to Windows.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Installation - Reinstallation ?

Jan 31, 2011

Regarding dual boot and GRUB. Here is my situation: Year ago I bought computer i7-920 6G one HDD, I installed windows 7 on it. than I bought second HDD, placed it into master 2 position and installed ubuntu on it. after installation of ubuntu I got GRUB loader as first thing when I start computer (I don't remember the particular settings during installation) So far so good now is the question - is GRUB on the first or on the second HDD? can I swap both harddrives so the ubuntu one will be in master 1 position? I'm asking because my windows 7 is now wrecked (can't even get it to safe mode) and I need to clean the first HDD and reinstall windows.

Ubuntu Installation :: Add Swap Partition Without Reinstallation

Apr 9, 2011

I'm using ubuntu 10.04 and it seems that I forgot to set up a swap partition when I installed my system. So, I can't install hibernate, and I don't think I have any virtual memory any more.

I know that I can always set up a swap file to play the same role, but since swap file is not contiguously stored on hard disk, the performance is expected to be worse than a swap partition.

So, how can I add a swap partition and make my system boot with it every time from now on? I have unused space on my hard disk, and re-installation is NOT an option.

Ubuntu Installation :: Thunderbird Won't Refresh It's Window?

Jun 9, 2010

I updated my laptop to Ubuntu 10.04 and among the many problems I've had is this strange one with Thunderbird 3. It will not refresh it's window. That is, it loads, and some of the panes (such as the one on the bottom right that shows the selected message) remain blank.

The work around I found is to grab the title bar and move the window. That will force a refresh, but it is terribly annoying to write a message and not see the words until I stop and move the window a hair.

This behavior happens when the Appearance settings (System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual effect) are set to "Normal" or "Extra". Under "none" Thunderbird behaves normally, but everything else looks terrible!

I'm guessing this is a Compiz problem; has anyone else seen this happen? more importantly, how do I fix it? and all other programs work fine under all appearance settings.

Ubuntu Installation :: Full Installation On USB External Hard Drive?

Apr 26, 2010

I disconnect my internal Windows hard drive first. Then run the installer from the Desktop CD. Everything works great. This is approximately the steps I take: I reboot, everything is good. I reconnect my internal hard drive, boot to Windows, reboot back to Kubuntu, everything is still good. I run updates and follow the instructions of the Comprehensive Multimedia & Video Howto. I reboot again, still no problems. At this point, I figure everything is OK and I have no worries. I boot to Windows and do some work in that environment. The next time I boot to the external Kubuntu hard drive, I get the following errors:

Begin: Starting AppArmor profiles ...
mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: No such file or directory
mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory

I want to install Ubuntu 10.04 to another machine alongside that other machine's XP. I know I could just run the install disc; but I'd like to take what changes I've made to Ubuntu along with it - for instance, TrueCrypt, Simple Backup, AdobeReader 3 (I think that's an addition), K3b, MuseScore, and some other applications I've added along the way. Also, I went thru some Terminal commands to get Brasero to copy CD's recently and would like to avoid doing that again.

Ubuntu Installation :: Bad Monitor Refresh Rate After Upgrading To 10.04?

May 3, 2010

I just upgraded to 10.04 and I've noticed some flickering on my monitor... if I'm correct, the problem is the refresh rate. It is set to 60 Hz and it doesn't give me any options to change it. I would guess that the display drivers are installed correctly because I'm running a lot of CompizConfig effects without a problem Is there anything else that could be causing this problem?

Fedora Installation :: Benq FP731 Fails To Show 72 Hz Refresh On F11?

Jan 2, 2010

I try to stay max 3 releases behind with Fedora, and now it is time to upgrade from a well behaving Fedora 8 to Fedora 11, not to slip too far behind. I have an Intel motherboard with a 82865G video chip. My display is a BenQ FP731. Fedora 8 the display works nicely giving 1280x1024 resolution at 72 Hz. On Fedora 11 the 865G chip ensists on setting the refresh rate to 75 Hz. I have copied the xorg.conf I use in Fedora 8 to /etc/x11/xorg.conf in the Fedora 11 installation. The chip sets itself to 60 Hz or 75 Hz, but not the desired 72 Hz which would give clear picture. What am I missing here?

Below a copy of my xorg.conf that gives the crystal clear and desired 1280x1024 @ 72Hz in Fedora 8 but gives a shivering and unusable 1280 x 1024 @ 75 Hz in Fedora 11:

---- clip clip ----

#Load "dri"

Then I want to format the original 60GB to something else, probably NTFS since both linux and windows can read it.I tried sbackup but that creates a back up on my current drive, not what I intended. If there is a gui program that will work that would be great, if not I'll still give whatever suggested a shot.

Ubuntu Installation :: Backup Current To Another HDD?

May 4, 2011

I am going to dist-upgrade my 10.10 installation to 11.04, but as precaution, I would like to replicate my existing installation onto another hard disk and perform the dist-upgrade there. When I am in booted into my current 10.10 installation, the hard disk (MBR, 4GB) is partitioned as such:

/dev/sda1 - /boot
/dev/sda2 - swap
/dev/sda3 - /I have an empty hard disk (MBR, 10GB) connected to the PC, and I partitioned to have a similar layout.
/dev/sdb1 - /boot
/dev/sdb2 - swap
/dev/sdb3 - /Since the 2 HDDs are of different sizes, I made /dev/sdb3 larger.

My question is: what is the easiest way to create a backup of my current working Ubuntu onto my secondary hard disk? I hope to perform the backup while booted into my existing 10.10 system; or I have no other choices but to boot from a LiveCD (e.g. Clonezilla) for backup?
