Fedora :: Getting Error (4290) While Installation
Jul 14, 2009
I d/l the dvd installation image of fedora i386 and tried to install it. First what I saw is the error message - Disk error 20, AX = 4290, drive FX
What that mean and what can I do about it?

I've just built a new system, the motherboard has an inbuilt ATI 4290 video (part of AMD GX890) and I'm using it with a Dell 2405 monitor. I've installed the latest Catalyst driver (10.6) from the AMD site, I can build the driver and X starts OK. The control panel for Catalyst says it will support 1920x1200 for a DVI connected screen - which mine is. When I start X it's always 1600x1200 and if I set the resolution via the Catalyst control panel, I get a display that has a black edge on the right of the monitor - about 1/4 of the screen.
At this point, I haven't tried setting any Modelines in xorg.conf as the fglrx driver is getting the information from the monitor via DDC and I'm assuming (probably a bad idea) that this data is correct.
Can anyone make any suggestions regarding this? Should I be setting Modelines regardless of what the driver gets from the monitor? Log files available if requested. Other that the 1600x1200 limitation, the system (AMD X6 1090t) runs very well.

Make: Fujitsu-Siemens
Model: LifeBook P7120
For some reason (hardware - I am guessing) the LiveCD does not boot on some laptops. The LiveCD worked well on my Dell Inspiron 1525 without any problems but my Fujitsu-Siemens refused to boot up. If you are trying to install or use F12 with the LiveCD ISO image burnt onto a CD on a laptop and fails with the following error:[drm:drm_mode_rmfb] *ERROR* tried to remove a fb that we didn't own Boot has failed, sleeping foreverthis workaround may work for you. Sometimes it will come up with another error about 'Root Device Not Found'
The workaround only works on a bootable USB key for some other reason, created with 'live-usb creator' and not a CD nor a LiveCD image on a USB created on a windows machine. I have tried them all.

I have been trying to install MATLAB 2008b as a standalone version; however, every time when the process runs to 18% it shows an error as follows: "There was an error extracting the archives for MATLAB compiler. Chceck that you have enough disk space and rerun the installer."
I did have checked the disk space which is much more than enough. I have also changed few different disks that are way more than enough as well, about 5GB at least, but this error still popped out when it runs to 18%.

I have the DVD installer of Fedora 10, i want to dual boot with windows vista. well i get up to the partitioning part of installation (in anconda) and it asks me how i want to partition it... i wanted to re size my partition and create the default format, so i keyd in 70GB and Okay. then it came up with an error, saying I had bad sector(s) The error told me to run chkdsk /f /r in windows, then i could run ntfsresize with -b, (in Linux) well i did all those steps, and shrunk /dev/sda1 to 70gb (/dev/sda2 is my recovery partition) i have a 140 gb hard drive, but can't find the unallocated space anywhere!
when i booted windows, it ran a chksdk, like it should, and in my computer it said that it had been shrunk (because the pie graph showed a capacity of around 70GB) When i go into windows disk management it says no unallocated space, just one big partition (and a 8gb recovery partition) this is the same with GParted on puppy linux, GParted on fedora 10 (live cd) says there is no drives I can mount or unmount and same error on partition logic... in EASUS partition manager i get told that there is no unallocated space, in the fedora installer there is only /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2. Does anybody know.. how to install fedora on this partition, or get rid of the partition and repartition it another way. when i click on the option to remove all linux partitions and create default format, it errors and says it cannot make another primary partition, then says there is no room for /boot. and i can not proceed.

I'm trying to install Fedora for the first time on my Desktop. Unfortunately, upon restart once the installation is complete I get the following error:
Code:
This is from Fedora 12 x86_64 DVD. I presume that this obviously has to do with my disk selection during partitioning, during which I deselcted the two drives that I didn't want to be part of the install and left the one that I did selected. I also selected "use entire disk". The drive had copies of both Ubuntu and Windows 7 on it, which I expect were wiped out during install.
I know that the details are sparse...but that's all I did. I'm happy to go back into the installer to retreive any necessary information that may be needed/to reinstall.

Ive installed about 50+ boxes with ubuntu/mint/fedora/etc but f15 is giving me a real headache...
I tried a fresh install over f14 with this drive (sdb, sda is my backup disk)
Installed obviously in part7
After rebooting (successful copied live image on hdd)
Code:
After another couple of installs (with lvm & w/o lvm) & even disconnecting the second harddrive -> same issue
Typing 'ls' in the rescue grub prompt returns
Code:
Cant 'ls /' into a single them - unknown filesystem (grub is installed in mbr of sdb) 'linux rescue' (wanted to try manual grub installation) command didnt work either.
Now again on fedora 14, same installation procedure, works fine. (and i wont bother doing a full distro upgrade from f14)

I am trying to run Fedora 14 from Virtual PC 2007 on Windows XP. Every time I try to boot it, it flashes some code and shows a blue screen with the Fedora logo for a fraction of a second. It goes to an ms-dos type screen with a white background and a single "[" in black. Then I receive an error saying "An unrecoverable processor error has been encountered. The virtual machine will reset now." I have googled many times and have scavenged the Fedora site for a solution, yet I have not found one for Fedora 14.

I am trying to install Fedora 11 from the full DVD iso on a system using an Intel D945GNT motherboard with a dual-core 3.2GHz Pentium D installed. The installation hangs quite quickly and produces the error "Kernel panic - not syncing"... The previous line is something along the lines of "EIP: [something] intel_i915_configure() [something else]". I have tried many different kernel boot options, such as acpi=off, nolapic, nommconf, and the like, but to no avail. It seems as though this has something to do with a memory mapping conflict due to the allocation of video memory for the on-board graphics chip, but I'm not at all certain about that.

Trying to give Fedora a proper trial by installing it on my main machine's hard drive. I tested the Live CD from a USB drive for a while and really liked it. Fedora is the first distro that I've tried that does Gnome Shell justice.
I haven't been able to get it to work on my system so far, however.
Some context: I have a triple-boot laptop (Windows 7, Debian, and now Fedora 15) with 4 physical partitions (True Crypt-encrypted W7, LUKS-encrypted Debian, LUKS-encrypted F15, and a boot partition). The True Crypt boot loader is on the MBR, and when I press Esc I get the Grub boot loader from the boot partition. This has worked well for me in the past, but something is awry now.
When I installed F15, I did not opt to install a boot loader (because I didn't want to have trouble getting into my other systems, which has happened to me before). Instead I booted up into Debian and ran update-grub, which found the Fedora partition and added an entry to Grub. I'm not sure whether that entry is correct, however, but editing it has not solved my problem.
When I choose the Fedora entry from Grub, it starts to boot and asks for the password to mount the partition. Shortly afterwards, however, it throws the following error: modprobe: FATAL: Error inserting padlock_sha (/lib/modules/kernel-name-here/kernel/drivers/crypto/padlock-sha.ko): No such device
Then it drops down to a shell and I can't do much from there.
I've tried blacklisting padlock-sha, but that doesn't make the error go away or get it to boot up.

[code]...
Similarly, if I click on System>Add/Remove Software>Package Collections, I get No groups could be found. A cache refresh should fix this. I don't see how to do a cache refresh. I tried rpm --rebuilddb, which didn't do any good and um clean all which also did no good. I did manage to do the updates with yum updates But I don't want to have to use yum at the command line all the time to do updates.

I want to upgrade my 32bit Fedora from 11 to 13 version. I tried both options: via preupgrade tool and via installation media (DVD). Both options failed with following Anaconda error at the beginning of installation process:
RpmUtilsError: RPM Error opening Package
In my case, the problem was in package:
/mnt/sysimage/var/cache/yum/anaconda-InstallationRepo-xxx.i386/packages/fontpackages-filesystem-1.44-1.fc13.noarch.rpm.
I switched to terminal, and discovered that size of this file is 0.
I downloaded installation DVD from official torrent, so checksum was autmatically checked. Verification test at the beginnig of installation was also successfully passed. So media is OK. Moreover, I also tried to upgrade via preupgrade tool with the same results.
I found similar bug with unclear status in Fedora Bug Tracking system for Anaconda in F12: [URL]

I have 2 CPUs Which are Intel and AMD based. I used F9 before and didnt have any issues while I removed the hdd that I'd installed F9 on INTEL based and then put my hdd on my AMD based cpu. Well it booted and ran perfectly no issues came up.And then I've done the upgrade to F10 (clean install on INTEL). I do the same case above. But I got error msgs it said that the UUID cannot be found (I was using label on F9 fstab and worked fine).
I put back my hdd to intel based cpu and then try to edit my fstab and menu.lst (change UUID to LABEL). WOW I thought by changing UUID from fstab and menu.lst would resolve my problem but it doesnt solve anything. My devices (sda1/2/3, /boot, and /home) cannot be reconized.Well do you guys know how to change UUID to LABEL? and what exactly my problem?

So I've been having major problems with Ubuntu, and I've decided to give Fedora a try. But low and behold, I'm having some troubles here too.
The install CD gets past the point where it has the 3 colored bars on the bottom of the screen loading up the system. Then it goes to a screen and prints out some lines (pretty sure its just part of the system booting up). So everything is going fine, then it gets to the following line...
Code:
VFS: inodes on changed media or resized disk sr0
And it keeps spitting that line out over and over and over again.
I googled this error, and apparently it can happen sometimes if your HD isn't connected properly or isn't talking with the computer properly. But I know that it is because I currently have a 250g partition with Vista on it that I can access just fine. And also a 250g ubuntu partition on it.
However, when I try to go into the Ubunut installation via grub, it says that it doesn't exist.
So do I need to use gparted or something to reformat that portion of my hard drive? Or is there something else I can do to get that error message to go away?

When I try to format with EXT4 (Default) it says the boot volume cannot be EXT4, when I try EXT3 it says it doesn't match the Live filesystem. This is retarded it won't let me use either.
