I am trying to install Fedora 11 in Virtual Box using the Live CD. When I try to format with EXT4 (Default) it says the boot volume cannot be EXT4, when I try EXT3 it says it doesn't match the Live filesystem. This is retarded it won't let me use either. (I don't usually throw around the word retarded, only in rare cases and this is one)

I also executed "dmesg", it also showed similar errors. Has the disk gone bad or the kernel is corrupted?

I'm trying to upgrade, but have this issue: usually I download the DVD iso, run checksum, burn it, test the disk, and when found ok, I run the upgrade. Now, however, I keep getting "disk not ok" at 95% of the disk test. I have downloaded and verified the iso twice, used 2 DVD's, 2 different DVD-drives, 2 different computers and keep getting this error at 95%.

I am now installing with ext3 instead of ext4. I am hoping for better success with it and will update. I was able to try MinGW with WINE before the first crash and I liked what I saw there. While changing the filesystem can I do it by parts? what I mean is for example: I have 2 partitions like '/' and '/home' with ext3, so I backup data in '/home', change '/' to ext4 then mv files from '/home' to '/' and change '/home' to ext4 and finally mv those files from '/' to '/home'. I tried rescue mode of Fedora-11-i386-netinst.iso after these steps above. The / partition can be found and mounted to /mnt/sysimage correctly. I can read/write files in / partition, and i can even yum new softwares in rescue mode, but it just can't be mounted when booting.

I created a new partition for Fedora 13, 64bit. I installed Fedora in sdb8 (hd1,7), formatted ext4, and created a separate /home in sdb7, formatted ext3, so I might share it with Ubuntu, in sdb6.
Fedora installed with Grub2. It booted fine, and after adjusting references in fstab Ubuntu booted OK too, but rather roughly.
That is when I shifted the boot flag to the Ubuntu partition. So now the original Ubuntu Grub is handling boot once again. Ubuntu boots as before, but I can't get Ubuntu's Grub to boot Fedora. An earlier post suggested this code, which generated error 13, Invalid or inappropriate executable:

I've got alternative lines invoking the kernel, because someone had suggested omitting the direct reference to root= ....
Either way I get error 2 - Bad File or directory.
I suspect the problem may be that I'm booting Grub in an ext3 partition and trying to invoke Fedora in an ext4 partition. Does anyone know if that is the likely cause of my problem? If so I can reinstall Fedora formatted ext3.
Alternatively, can I create a Fedora /boot partition, and move/reinstall Grub there? Either way -- should I use old Grub, so both Grubs are the same?
Should I have assigned mount points to sdb8 (Fedora) and sdb7 (home)? Currently I'm not using sdb7 at all.

I have a external usb 20Gb hdd. It was a ntfs partition but i could'nt mount it, so I try with a ext3 partition, because with centos it's mount automaticly, but... for some reason that I don't know, even with a ext3 partition my centos don't detect my external usb hdd, howerver I already try to mount it on ubuntu to see if it work, even on windows with some programm to recognize ext3, it was alright, but why can't i mount it on my centos?
View 13 Replies View RelatedI compiled a 2 custom kernels so far (many custom kernels just 2 that I have used) however, both of the kernels display an error message about EXT3-Fs and unable to load custom options even though all my partitions are ext4.
I have looked around and the only reason I find for those are that the file systems are corrupt beyond repair,However the problems always ments EXT3-fs is a ext3 file system problem and EXT4-fs is a ext4 file system poblem. Why is mine saying EXT3 and some times EXT2 when im using EXT4?

I have a NAS from WD that runs some stripped down flavor of linux. The NAS has one USB port at the back which can be used to expand the storage. If I plug in an external disk formated in either NTFS or HFS+ then the system automatically mounts the disk and shares it over samba. If I plug in a disk that is formated in ext3, the disk is recognized but that's about it. It doesn't mount or get shared or anything. I have tried asking WD about this and I have tried asking google. But after two days of searching I am turning here for some more expert advice.
Here is what I've managed to figure out so far.
If I check dmesg before and after plugging in the ext3 usb disk I have found out that these lines are added to the log:

I have tried googleing those last two lines but I haven't found any info that I can make any sense of.
If I run the command "mount -a" I get the following messages from the shell: "mount: Cannot read /etc/fstab: No such file or directory"
Hover I am able to mount the ext3 disk manually. First I get this info from fdisk

This makes the usb disk visible in the shell, but since this is a NAS, it is kinda useless as long as it doesn't show up in samba.
Since I'm pretty new to linux I don't know what to try next so I'm hoping for some advice as to what I can do to make the ext3 usb disk automount.
I am unable to boot my server and it is erroring with the message "Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!". Here are the details:
I have a brand new Dell PowerEdge T110 server with Quad-Core Xeon CPU and 2GB 1333MHz RAM. I have installed a hard disk (SATA, 7.2rpm) on this machine that I removed from another Dell PowerEdge T100 server with Dual-Core Xeon CPU that was running software RAID 1.
Now when I boot the new T110 server, it displays the following error messages code...
I am running CentOs v5.5 x86-64. If I put the hard disk back into T100, it boots fine. I do not know why it is not working with T110 server.

where "theUUID" (without the quotes) is the UUID
I believe this is caused by me trying to get lvm to use the external /boot because when I had unmounted the external /boot, it was creating a /boot in root. So, I booted a live cd and mounted the external /boot where /boot in the root volume is supposed to be. Basically, I think the problem is that I need to make my /boot (which is the only ext3 partition in the entire system and I want it that way) "relate itself" to the lvm root so that it boots into the system. As mentioned earlier, in the live CD, I made the external /boot mount itself in the root's /boot but I don't know how to tell the system to do this on its own while booting without my assistance. I chrooted from the live cd which involved a lot of tedious stuff but basically the important stuff I did were:
grub-install /dev/sdb
update-grub
update-initramfs -u
P.S.I get the issue in the Subject of this topic by telling tune2fs to mark the external /boot, lvm / and /home partitions as "dirty."
Running Debian Squeeze, I used gparted to wipe the fat partition on a 8GB USB thumbdrive, and repartitioned it with ext3. Everything goes fine, and gparted and fdisk -l both show the correct partition, but I can't seem to mount it, and automount in gnome fails as well.code...
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am using CentOS 5.5.I suppose this is an oft repeated question. I accidentally deleted, using rm command, 2 wmv files. The files were in a single ext3 1Tb drive, with just 1 partition --- the ext3 one. Each file is 600 - 800mb. The 1Tb drive has only about 20Gb data.Immediately after deleting the files i unmounted the drive (/dev/sdc1). Thereafter i searched the the net and came to know of the recovery tools foremost and photorec. I have installed both of them. I am currently running both of them as root --- foremost is just showing a lot of * signs on the terminal and photorec has managed to find some txt and png files --- but no wmv.For foremost i used: /usr/sbin/foremost -t wmv -i /dev/sdc1For photorec i followed some instructions available on the web.
In the meantime, based on some post on the net i ran debugfs as root, then cd into the directory where the files were deleted. Then on typing ls -d i managed to get the inodes of the 2 deleted files and the names of the deleted files are also correct. The instructions on the net http://www.theavidcoder.com/?p=3 tell me to run fsstat and dls both of which i am unable to find in /bin, /usr/bin, /usr/sbin and /sbin. So i am unable to proceed further.
I got a CentOS server + KDE from a server (which I had no contact until now), he had 2 HD's one for the system and another for files.
I brought the HD system home to try to make it run on a virual machine (VMware) so I can do some testing before you put in practice.
But already converted the VMware HD to the system, it tries to start but it shows some errors and in a message "kernel panic - not syncing: attemped to kill init"
I think the drivers are correct, has edited the file "/ etc / modprobe.conf" edited these entries equal to another I installed CentOS on VMware.

I am trying to dual boot Vista and F10 and I have 2 different 400GB hard drives to do it on. On the first HD, I have Vista installed but when I try to install F10 on the second, I get this error message:

I have a 500Gb external disk (esata) used a part of a backup cycle. I tried to mount it for the next backup cycle and an i/o error was detected in the ext3 journal. I fixed the bad block but that lost the data in the block and ran fsck.ext3. This resulted in a damaged file system message and a scan of the disk and fsck finished ok. The disk mounts rw. I am not really sure if I should reformat this disk. I have copied the backups off the disk and in any case there are later backups. Reformatting is not a problem but takes time and I would prefer not to do it if it is not required but I want a clean file system

I just got a new hard disk so that my "/" and "/home" partitions would be located at their own separate drives. All was well until i tried to expand my "/home" partition to fill up the entire drive that used to also have the "/" and swap partitions on there. Let me sketch the before-and-after scenario in GParted,

Gparted gave an error prompt after which i found out that the entire ext3 partition (/home) had been moved to the left but not yet expanded to the right, which is of course not a problem. However, for some reason it has labelled the entire ext3 partition as a swap partition!
I'm still running ubuntu from the usb flash drive, because i dont want to risk that the (120GB) swap area will actually be used and cause my data to be lost.
I guess my question is, can i relabel the swap partition as ext3 like it was before without formatting (ie without losing data)?
