Debian Configuration :: Upgrading MPlayer - Missing Description / Maintainer

Sep 3, 2010

Added the following line to sources.list:
deb [URL] squeeze main non-free
After that I did an update and upgrade.
The following packages were kept back : ffmpeg libavcodec52 libavdevice52 libavformat52 libcairo2 libpostproc51 libswscale0 mplayer ( libcairo2 is on hold ).

To overcome this I did: apt-get install mplayer
The following extra packages will be installed:
liba52-0.7.4 libartsc0 libbs2b0 libdirac-decoder0 libfaac0 libggi2 libggiwmh0 libgii1
libmp3lame0 libopencore-amrnb0 libopencore-amrwb0 libvdpau1 libx264-104 libxvidcore4
It ends like: Unpacking replacement mplayer ...

dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/mplayer_2%3a1.0~rc3++svn20100804-0.0_amd64.deb (--unpack):

Next thing I tried : apt-get dist-upgrade:
The following packages will be REMOVED:
libavfilter0
The following NEW packages will be installed:
libavcore0 libavfilter1 libavutil50 libva1
The following packages have been kept back:
libcairo2
The following packages will be upgraded:

Ubuntu :: Uunable UFW Configuration, In A Programme Called Firewall Configuration

Feb 4, 2010

When I enable UFW Configuration, in a programme called Firewall Configuration, runs along with the System. Now, I configured it such that it can run along with the Session. Now, Ubuntu is already secure. So, is there any need for additional Firewall like this? (ufw is already present in Ubuntu, and this only Configures it). And, is it required to have it enabled always for keeping the Firefox running? (Because It may consume System Resources). Or, is there any other firewall that consumes less System resources or runs at the Background?

Debian Installation :: Debian 5.0.4 New Install Will Not Read Boot Disk Info

Mar 10, 2010

I down loaded Debian 5.0.4 and burned it to CD (several times I might add till it was right) and now the computer I'm putting it on wont acknowledge it as a boot disk and load. It does not have a problem with my windows cd, which has a crack and the start of all my problems, But not the Debian CD-1 disk. what now? The computer is an IBM thinkpad a22p. Everything works as far as I can tell. But I was going to reinstall Windows and failed in that because of a small crack on the edge of the disk that stopped the install and any hope of accessing the file on the laptop. Microsoft does not support windows xp any longer, you must buy windows 7, but the ibm will not run it due to processor speed and ram limitations. But it will run linux and I'm willing to try it just to get out of microsoft control.

Idon't know what else to do. This is the link to where I downloaded the software ( [URL] ). The others five that i downloaded were on the same page that I got this one. Are there bad files here? Is there a missing file in the disc?

Ubuntu :: Make Unity Ignore Its Own Monitor Configuration

When I first started using Unity, I configured the dual monitor system under the settings program. I then changed my xorg.conf, but Unity is ignoring that configuration and switching to its own. I think this might have something to do with RandR, but I'm not sure. Is there a way to make Unity use the xorg.conf configuration?

Programming :: Destructor Called On Objects In Deque Without It Being Called Explicitly

Jul 13, 2011

I feel there's a bit of a misunderstanding going on between C++ and me...My problem is that I have a deque of pointers to a class, and create objects then add them to the deque in a for loop. However, the destructor is called on the object as soon as the loop quits.

Code:

This prints:

Code:

Now, if I change the deque from deque<Test*> to deque<Test> then it works fine - I get:

Code:

However, I can't do this with my actual code, because I am creating a deque of pointers to an abstract class, so it won't let me instantiate the class. (This is all so that I can take advantage of polymorphism, and call functions on a set of similar objects without worrying what type of object I'm dealing with).

So, I suppose my question is: what is the correct way to create that deque of pointers to the abstract class? I don't seem to be barking up the right tree currently.

Debian :: Let Apt-get Update Ignore Installation Media?

Sep 24, 2010

Short version: Why does apt-get update since recently ask me for my installation DVD?

Long version: In my sources.lst there is still an entry for the installation DVD.

I like that because if a package on DVD is still the newest version then there is no need to download it again. (If I comment out the DVD entry apt-get update will ignore the DVD but at the same time no package will ever be installed from it again, right?)

Since some time ago this was no problem as apt-get update didn't have a problem with the entry - or if it had (I don't really remember), there was just an error message and the process would continue with the other sources. But then this changed and now I'm asked to insert the disk (luckily I have only one DVD) every time and the routine waits until I have done so.

Is there a way to change that back?

I've read some apt documentation and the apt-* manual pages including apt.conf and some examples for that but could not find something useful though there might be something I missed because I didn't understand everything I saw.

Clearly, it makes sense that DVDs and the like can be included in apt-get update because some people update offline with these media. But (the standard) DVDs are read-only and the individual disks are identified by apt (see /var/lib/apt/cdroms.list). So the system should not expect an already known DVD to change but recognize if a new one is being used.

Debian :: Making Apt-get Ignore Broken Packages?

Apr 21, 2011

what should not be mentioned:

*disabling "Automatically fix broken packages before installing or removing" in aptitude -- because it does not work

*editing /var/lib/dkpg/status -- not related to apt-get really

* -m or -f options of apt-get -- because they do not help me in any way

* downloading the package manually and using dpkg --force-depends-version -i <package> -- again, not apt-get

I need the --just shut the fuck up and dl&install the darn package option immediately.

Debian :: Force Aptitude To Ignore Broken Packages

Jul 26, 2010

I am just too tired and am missing something in the man pages for aptitude and not getting my search terms right but I can't seem to find a way to make aptitude ignore a couple of supposed broken packages (they work just fine by the way). The only way I can find to remidy the situation is to remove those couple of packages or upgrade several things to their Squeeze counter parts. I really don't want to try and do the upgrade as at home I am stuck on a 56k connection. Removing the broken packages I guess won't be too bad if I can find the debs again after I install a couple of things I want to add to my system. I would however just like to make aptitude ignore the state of my system and try to install what I want anyway.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Export VPN Configuration Info

Apr 16, 2010

I've got an EeePC, running Jaunty, and I can use the Network-Manager to connect through my ibVPN account just fine. I want to also use this ibVPN account on my desktop running Hardy. I've tried to manually transpose all the configuration info, but it keeps coming up with errors (a number of errors, including sometimes "bad username/password"). So I thought: "Hey, why am I even bothering with all this manually transposition of credentials? I can just Export the account config info from the (working) Jaunty machine and then import them straight into the Hardy machine." Should be pretty simple, huh? Woulda, coulda, shoulda. I go to the VPN tag in the Network-Manager on Jaunty, select "ibVPN" (the working VPN account) and click Export. I tell it to save the info to a file called ibVPN (pptp).conf... and I get an error saying:

Code:

Cannot export VPN connection The VPN connection 'ibVPN' could not be exported to ibVPN (pptp).conf Error: unknown error You see that "Error: unknown error" crap? Means I don't even know what needs changing. Damn fool network-manager. I've tried jiggling stuff round, but nothing seems to make a difference.

Ubuntu :: Loading Configuration Info For Evolution Alarm Notify Error

Mar 16, 2010

Today my computer froze a couple times while running VBox forcing me to hit the reset button on the computer, anyways, now I am getting this error:
Code:
An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information for evolution-alarm-notify. Some of your configuration settings may not work properly.

Code:
Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See [URL] for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-0bZHOOZLeL: Connection refused) to be perfectly blunt with you, i dont know what ORBit is or what it is for and the file /tmp/dbus-0bZHOOZLeL doesn't exist on my computer (not even a symlink) the only network sharing apps that are running on the machine are SAMBA and IPP, according to synaptic I don't even have NFS installed on the computer.

As for evolution-alarm-notify, I don't use use evolution (unless I get a pgp encrypted email) which is highly unlikely that I will get one, I am thinking, if I remove the evolution link from my notification bar will that fix the problem?

Debian :: Firewall Keeps Blocking Something Called CPQ-Wbem?

Jul 4, 2011

My firewall keeps blocking something called CPQ-Wbem. There have been about 10 instances of this.

A machine on the network is advertising it runs, or looks for machines running, Compaq Insight Manager on TCP/2301. If the machine isn't yours or you haven't enabled Compaq's web-based remote management then silently drop it.

Now as far as i know i do not have a network, just a dsl connection. I also do not own a Compaq computer. So if someone who has some knowledge of this could you explain to me how a " network is advertising it runs, or looks for machines running, Compaq Insight Manager on TCP/2301 " . This would seem to me to be a local network thing not a www thing ?

I read that I can copy one over from /var/x11r6/lib/xinitrc, but the /x11r6/ directory doesn't exist either. I've installed xorg, but the directory still eludes me. A package search yields nothing useful. I am using the SLiM display/login manager, which I believe calls startx, which should theoretically generate the ~/.xinitrc file.
