I have just upgraded my lenny box to squeeze. I did it by clean-installing squeeze. The installation was successful, but I just noticed that I had forgotten to backup some important files I had on this machine before the installation...
Now, is there any way to recover those files?

How to best manage partitioning when install programs not from debian repositories?I just discovered that Debian installs applications not from repositories to /opt and /lib. Both directories or folders reside in root (/) partition.Having made my root (/) partition (which is only around 500MB) -- more than sufficient for holding a couple of linux images but NOT good for holding application. What is the best solution for resolving this? It's annoying and worrying that my system always reminds of a close to full capacity root partition.

how to install Dropbox for Debian Squeeze from source. Please read everything before you begin. I prepared it as I installed Dropbox for my own system. Please Note: I use sudo, you may have to use root or 'su' from the command line. If you don't know the difference between sudo and su, then you shouldn't try this until you know. At the time I did this, the lastest dropbox version was 0.6.7.

Recently I tried to install Debian 8.3 from *netinst.iso as a VM on VmWare Worksation 12. I try this in my office where there is a windows proxy set, for some security measures. During the installation in order to download updated and install additional packages I need to choose a mirror and then a proxy. I try to set the proxy but all I receive was an error. Decide to continue with the minimal installation and when the system start just to enter the proxy in etc/profile the reboot and I was thinking that everything will work just fine and I will be able to install everything I need. When I try apt-get install I receive a message Ign cdrom:// Debian ... Then to remove that error I edit /etc/apt/source.list but even then nothing happened when I try to use apt-get install. I receive and error message "Unable to locate the package.

We've started using Debian based servers more and more in work and are getting the hang of it more and more every day. Right now I'm an ace at setting up partitions, software RAID and LVM volumes etc through the installer, but if I ever need to do the same thing once the system's up and running then I become unstuck.
Is there any way I can get to partman post-install, or any similar tools that do the same thing? Or failing that are there any simple guides to doing these things through the various command line tools?

I have installed Suse on my Windows Vista 64bit machine a couple of times, but the last time I did it - after a disk change - presented some unanticipated problems. Prior to install, Windows Disk Management (whose output I was unable to paste into this question) showed that my disks were laid out as follows:
[Code].....
Disk 0 is a Seagate ATA drive, while Disk 1 is a Western Digital Ext HDD Usb Device. Looking back, I think I should have carved out a partition after M before installing Suse, but I was uncertain whether to make it a logical one or a primary, and in the past the installation has taken the 25 or so gig it needed from the last defined partition on disk 0. This time, however, it went after disk 1, and reformatted the entire drive, deleting about 300 gig of user data, including my system backup. What really suprised me is that it took up the entire drive: 2 gig for the swapfile, then a 20 gig partition, and all the rest for the third partition.
This is not what I would have expected. I especially would not have expected the installation to re-format user data. In any case, I did not want Suse on disk 1, so I reformatted the drive and then used my Partition Manager to rebuild the boot Mbr. So now, I am able to boot into windows, do not have Suse on my machine, but have lost critical data. My disks are now back to the way they were when I started (see above), except that drive F is now all free space, except for my latest backup. My question is how do I ensure, when I reinstall Suse, that it will choose disk0 for the installation and will not overlay any of the data that I have on that drive.

I have problem to install my fonts in my Debian. I used this guide but it not worked for me, i just could right click on the font and install it with font viewer.
Ubuntu Linux searches for fonts in specific locations as listed in the /etc/fonts/fonts.conf file.
A look at the contents of /etc/fonts/fonts.conf file indicates the following directories which are searched by Ubuntu Linux for fonts. They are :
/usr/share/fonts
/usr/share/X11/fonts
/usr/local/share/fonts
~/.fonts
So if you want to install new fonts in Ubuntu Linux or Debian for that matter, you can copy the fonts to any one of the 4 directories listed above.
The last directory ~/.fonts is a local hidden directory in every user’s Home folder. If you install the new fonts in this directory, the fonts will be available only for the person logged into that particular user account.
If you want your new fonts to be available system wide, to all users, then you should install them in any one of the first three directories listed above.
Once all your fonts are copied to the specific font directories, you have to make Ubuntu Linux aware of the new fonts so that it can make use of them. This is done by running the following command in the console :
$ sudo fc-cache -f -v
Result:
sepanta@dhcppc1:~$ sudo fc-cache -f -v
/usr/share/fonts: caching, new cache contents: 120 fonts, 6 dirs
/usr/share/fonts/X11: caching, new cache contents: 0 fonts, 6 dirs
/usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi: caching, new cache contents: 358 fonts, 0 dirs
/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi: caching, new cache contents: 358 fonts, 0 dirs
/usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1: caching, new cache contents: 8 fonts, 0 dirs
[Code] ...
Red are my fonts in two different folder.

I have installed jessie on a couple of machines. One is configured as the NFS filesystem exporter and NIS server. The other one, I am trying to configure as NFS and NIS client. NFS does not seem too much of a problem, I can mount the exported filesystem to a directory in the client and unmount it, but when I install NIS the system becomes very slow. Any command preceded by "sudo" takes a very long time (a few minutes) to complete. Then, upon rebooting the system, it reports many services failed to start (login, accounts, modem manager, avahi, network manager, exim). When if finally completes, I get a terminal login, instead the graphic login window.

i need to install a mail server with the following requirements: smtp, imap, web administration interface (users management to be done by a non-specialist) and ... to be easy enough to install/implement on debian (this is one time deal for me ...)
i used until now Xmail, phpxmail and nocc, very easy to install and it was working flawlessly, but unfortunately nocc is a too poor webmail client be cause is based only on pop3 literally the requirement is that on the web[client] mails sent must be saved and from what i see on webmail that only can be done with imap and (this is the big problem) Xmail does not support imap so i cannot install a good webmail client

I've got a Dell Optiplex Desktop here, the CPU is a Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2400 CPU @ 3.10GHz. The integrated ethernet here is from intel also, it's a 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection. This computer is running a Debian Squeeze 64bits, distrib sid, kernel 2.6.39-2-amd64.Well, here goes the story. I had a lot of trouble with the ethernet card, being very slow, and it just didn't work when i was using tftp. So I downloaded and compiled the latest driver available on Intel website. Currently with debian sid, the version for the driver ( e1000e ) is version: 1.3.10-k2. From Intel I got the version 1.3.17-NAPI.Alright, so I build it, and move the module manually to the right place, replacing the previous version at the same time ie :
$ sudo cp e1000e.ko /lib/modules/2.6.39-2-amd64/kernel/drivers/net/e1000e/e1000e.ko
However, there is is still something bothering me. When I want to check, after rebooting, that I did it right, here is what happens :
$ sudo ethtool -i eth1
driver: e1000e
version: 1.3.10-k2
[code]...
So, which one should I trust ? Is there something I didn't do properly when installing the module ? Or maybe I just don't understand ethtool and modinfo enough.

Having tried different approaches to install (and run!) a webserver certificate from StartSSL on an Apache2 webserver, I had no success at all since three days. There are many web pages out there in the internet, each is naming it other ways, i.e. one speaks from server./etc/ssl/certs/server.pem, another name it /etc/ssl/private/server.key etc. etc.
Is there a common-sense description how to name a private key, how to name the public key, and just important again, where to place them and what what rights they must have to protect them? And, still important, which config file to adopt (default-ssl, or default-ssl.conf).
By the way, I implemented already the certificates in an other environments, and they are all working (tested with the ssl checker [URL] .....).
How to find a common-sense web page for Apache2 on Debian 8.1?

I've a problem running jessie on a XEN supervisor; my running kernel and the installed kernel image differ, because the host system forces the kernel at boot time. Current loaded kernel is
Code:
Select all$ uname -r
3.18.12
But I'm not able to install this version from the standard repository.
Code:
Select all# apt-cache search linux-image

linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64 - Linux 3.16 für 64-Bit-PCs

linux-image-amd64 - Linux for 64-bit PCs (meta-package)
linux-image-amd64-dbg - Debugging symbols for Linux amd64 configuration (meta-package)
nvidia-kernel-3.16.0-4-amd64 - NVIDIA binary kernel module for Linux 3.16.0-4-amd64
linux-image-2.6.32-5-xen-amd64 - Linux 2.6.32 for 64-bit PCs, Xen dom0 support
Now I'm facing issues loading kernel modules for iptables, because the module path does not exist. Is there an easy way to install a proper kernel image from the standard repositories?

I just installed the lastest stable Debian (gnome) today and what I was most afraid just happened: my laptop's wifi isn't working properly, it isn't turning on. This had already hapened on livecd.
In the laptop's chassis leds, the wifi led apears as green. When I click to turn on the wifi, as shown on the picture the button, quickly disappears and appears again not seeming to have any effect at all at turning on the wifi but not showing any error either!
Picture :
What's interesting about the wifi not working is that in the installation process I was able to connect to a wifi hotspot and it connected to the internet fine!
Now after installation was complete and my system did the reboot, I was no longer able to connect to the internet using wifi.
My wireless card is Atheros AR9565 and my LAN card is also Atheros.
Here is an output of lspci and lsmod which may have some leads about the problem.
lspci
Code: Select allquant@debian:~$ lspci
