How to best manage partitioning when install programs not from debian repositories?I just discovered that Debian installs applications not from repositories to /opt and /lib. Both directories or folders reside in root (/) partition.Having made my root (/) partition (which is only around 500MB) -- more than sufficient for holding a couple of linux images but NOT good for holding application.What is the best solution for resolving this? It's annoying and worrying that my system always reminds of a close to full capacity root partition.

Last week I upgraded from Squeeze to Wheezy. Everything seems to be in order, except now launching empathy will get my 4 separate GNOME keyring prompts in a row. I guess my keyring got copied for some reason, but I can't figure out what package to install to deal with my keyrings, as gnome-keyring-manager is only in sid...

I've got 4 identical 1 TB drives and would like to use them in a software RAID configuration on my home server. I'm running Debian Linux using 'mdadm' utility to manage the software RAID. I don't know how much I've read is fact or dated or even false so I decided I would ask here to get help from people who know more about this than I do. This is essentially just a file server machine to store all my data so being that I've got four identical SATA hard drives, I was thinking about doing RAID level 5. I guess I'll start here and ask if that is the recommended level of RAID. I think RAID level 5 will be fine for my general server usage. My second issue is partitioning the four individual drives to get maximum performance / space from them. Basically just asking here how would you or you recommend I partition the drives? I was thinking about doing three seperate partitions per drive:
/dev/sda1 = 4 GB (swap)/dev/sda2 = 1 GB (/boot)/dev/sda3 = 995 GB (/Now from that partition schema above, obviously all the types will be 'fd' for RAID and the partition for /boot is going to be bootable. My confusion is that I read Grub doesn't support booting from RAID 5 since Grub can't handle disk assembly. If /dev/sdx2 (sda2, sdb2, sdc2, sdd2) are partitioned for /boot (bootable), how would you guys configure this RAID to match up equally? I don't think I do a RAID level 1 on 4 identical partitions, right?

My sources list for updates is a bit wonky as in needs the correct uk repositories listed, for Lenny main, could someone point me to where I can find the uk repositories so I can enter then in the software sources option from the menu?

I'm rather new to Linux...especially Debian. I've been running Kubuntu for about 1 month now and I wanted to try out Debian as well. So I installed it on a laptop (Downloaded the 6 DVDs). Now, how do I add some repositories to Synaptic so I can update my software? Also, is there a list of repositories? So far, every time I want to install something I need to insert one of the DVDs.

As title says, running unetbootin throws this error [URL]...... I can easily find the files myself (go to synaptic > look at installed files > scroll down) and I can't remove/purge because they would require me to remove some important software (XFCE).
FIX: Required some more 32 libraries.

So I am helping a friend (computer n00b) to install Debian Squeeze over the telephone, since his Vista had crashed, and after we set up the partitions like so:9 GB /1GB swap 150 GB /homeIt "hangs" for a while, i.e. nothing happens, and then it says that it "failed to partition disks". It did not give any error codes, and I did not see the message first hand, since I was doing it over the phone, but I was thinking that there is something wrong with the hard drive (causing Vista to crash perhaps?) so could this be circumvented by just using the first (or last) 10-15 GB of the disk?

I installed new ati radeon drivers in the morning because i was getting display/screen deformation when using some programs (like vertical lines and so on). Now everything is just fine but i can't get 3d accelerator to work and due to this some games are running very slow. I am a new linux user. I have done everything i know and searched this from the internet but i can't get 3d acc. to work again. i have installed new drivers over the old ones (or i don't know; mesa?)

I've got Debian Sid x64 on my machine. Problem is that in my KDE setup several programs don't work, namely System Load Viewer plasmoid, plasmoid with temperature info and update-notifier-kde. System Load Viewer always shows 0% RAM and swap usage, as well as no processors, temperature sensors plasmoid shows no sensors available even after I installed lm-sensors and run sensors-detect, update-notifier-kde doesn't show any notifications even if I run aptitude update manualy. I might be mistaken but it seems to me that these three programs are not working because of some common reason, most likely some policy package either missing or misconfigured, but I can't figure out what is it.

1. I'm trying out ratpoison (a windows manager). It's cool, but a few commands weren't working - I now think that it's because Debian delivered ratpoison 1.4.3 (Feb 2008), while development has issued two more releases (the latest being 1.4.5). Should I (or should I not) install the later release?

I noticed that WineHQ doesn't exist in the Debian repositories. Or is there a Wine alternative in the repositories? If not, how can I install the latest stable version of Wine ?
it says here http://www.winehq.org/download/debian that some .deb packages need to be downloaded and manually installed, but I don't know how to install them...

how to install Dropbox for Debian Squeeze from source.Please read everything before you begin. I prepared it as I installed Dropbox for my own system. Please Note: I use sudo, you may have to use root or 'su' from the command line. If you don't know the difference between sudo and su, then you shouldn't try this until you know. At the time I did this, the lastest dropbox version was 0.6.7.

I've been wondering what's the advantages and disadvantages of installing an iceweasel extension from the debian repositories vs the addons.mozilla.org website. I can thus far see that extensions installed from the repositories can't be uninstalled from inside iceweasel. Is there any difference? Are they installed in different places? Are they always accessible to all users? Any difference at all?

I've installed two emulators, one for Nintendo 64 and GameBoy Advance, but I couldn't find the program after it installed. I have also installed NES emulator, but it could be found by searching its name in the Menu. I'm sure I haven't selected to only download the package and not install it.

I am on Debian/Tor/Vidalia environment and I am thoroughly confused as to what the Apt-get engine does. To put it simply, I landed on Debian because I heard that Torrent-downloading stuff via an external application such as U Torrents does no longer guarantee anonymity, even with a Tor proxy server. So I got into the Amnesia CD stuff, after burning the ISO image on CD. I was hoping then to be able to install U Torrents on Debian and carry out the U Torrents downloads from within the Debian shield.
I did download U Torrents but I was unable to install it from the .exe file. Then I heard that programs can be installed in Debian only via a special APT-get engine. My understanding was that by running the" APT-get" engine in the CMD( Terminal) screen, I'd be able to access the softwares I wanted to install, such as U Torrents..
Unfortunately, when I run the " Apt-get" engine with the script " Apt-get Install + software name, " I get a " no packages found" answer. I searched for Bit Torrents, Azureus, U Torrents and a host of other common softwares, to no avail.. None is there. I even got to the APT-get.org site. THere I did find hundreds of repositories and packages , but I haven't the slightest clue as to what they contain. This database is not searchable by software name, so I don't know if and where my software is there.

I have just installed Ubuntu (/dev/sda7) and Debian (/dev/sda4), but since I have updated all informations on Ubuntu, then Debian did not appear anymore on the grub list. There is an wiki I have found, but I an not really sure about what to do.
Here are the boot informations:

ps: on this file, it says that the /boot is installed on the MBR and /dev/sda3. I will remove the boot from MBR as I am now using /dev/sda3 instead. Sorry for my english

Q:How to set a Dual boot for 2 linux OS's on a 80GB HD? I have 5 Lenny 5.0.5 DVD's and that is currently installed. No data on current setup needs to be saved. So a reinstall is not a problem.
Would like to set up as follows:
1st OS permanent Lenny 5.05 (about 50GB).
2nd OS space (about 30mg) is (testing) or playing with CD/DVD's of the month.
My background: I did S/W development on the HPUX about 100 yrs. ago, so I can just get around the command line.

I am trying to remove some icons from the "taskbar"/panel and find the only real options are adding MORE widgets, adding another panel, or deleting the whole panel.I simply want to remove a duplicate and re-arrange the icons without having to delete the panel, add another panel, and careful add, in the order I want the icons, the widgets right-click on the panel and I get "Task Manager Settings ALT+D,S" and "Panel Options" which offers no visible means of managing the panel.I condemned to deleting the panel and starting over?

I am trying to install Debian Lenny on my iMac. When the installer menu comes to the partitioning scheme, I have no choice other than "manual partitioning".
Based on what I have read so far, I think I need to have at least two partitions:
- a root partition (/) but for how much space I am not so sure yet
- a swap partition equal to the amount of my RAM (which in this case is 2 GB DDR3): is this correct?
I wonder if I should furthermore make a "free space" (around 1 GB) and a boot partitions as well. Should I make any further partitions?
I want to devote some 50 GB of space to Debian so how the rest of this space should be partitioned: that is, when I am done with root, swap, free space, and boot, I am still left with a considerable amount of space.

I have a linux server with debian system. I want to put in my debian server a site. I installed apache php mysql and phpmyadmim. I really thought that was more difficult for me to put my site database. But now i can load on server my database with phpmyadmin after a very simply installation. I could not believe. I'm studying how make ftp work (apt-get site-ftp?) and waiting from my host directadmin installed. But i try to manage linux console and was very exciting for a newbiest like me!
Now I can write text on my site server with echo etc,etc, I have a database, but I have not site files. While I was studying tutorial to make apache work, I frequently read the directory /var/www and my debian console confirm that is an existing directory. How can use this directory?
Any listing debian linux server commands to:
copy, delete, paste from my pc desktop a file TO folder /var/www ?
It is possible without ftp? Another question. Which bad errors can make a newbie like me configuring apache with linux? I ask this because I read all where that I could not manage a server system if I'm not a sysadmin, but I have only to put in a site... what the real risk?

I am a ubuntu user but I want to go to the next level to use debian because what I heard of it, but I get confused to what to install on my computer do I install debian testing or debain stable with testing repositories.
- I want to use this system to the home use only.
- I want to use the newest packages because the stable packages is too old to use.
- What about using more than one repository i.e stable with testing with unstable at the same time (the same sourcelist)
- Is the testing and unstable sid packages good enough for the home use?

I have a Intel DH67CL motherboard with UEFI support(and updated to latest BIOS). I have connected a 180GB Intel 330 SSD into my system so as to install Debian testing.
Presently, a 160GB sata hard drive is connected along with SSD and is used to boot default OS.
1. I am planning to do GPT partitioning. I am totally new to GPT partitioning. from what I understands, It needs some mandatory partitions like ESP. My doubt is, in a SSD solely booting Linux, will I need to create separate /(root) and /home and /data partitions? Also, I plan to use /var/log and some other frequently updated directories moved into existing harddrive.
So, what is the partitioning order - is this fine - ESP(512MB), /boot(100MB), /(30GB), /home(50GB) and /DATA(50GB) and remaining 16-17GB for over provisioning for the SSD?
2. is there a need to have 128MB MSR(microsoft reserved) in the case of Linux
3. With gdisk or parted for creating partitions? how to verify if partitions are aligned. In GPT, only primary partitions are supported?
4. Some answers in askubuntu/superuser says ext4 is not really good for SSD, instead take JFS? is this true? Is Btrfs mature enough to use with Desktop system
5. Which bootloader? gdisk creator Roderick is pushing for rEFInd or gummyboot instead of GRUB2.
6. In my PC, 4GB RAM is available with a core i3 processor. Shall I mount /tmp in RAM? Will I need to specify the size of RAM when mounting using /etc/fstab? A size of 1GB is fine?
7. using deadline I/O Scheduler instead of CFQ?
