Upon installing Debian, it asked me if it can use a mirror to get updated packages. I said no, yet it ignored my command and fetched packages. Why did Debian disobey me?

* -m or -f options of apt-get -- because they do not help me in any way
* downloading the package manually and using dpkg --force-depends-version -i <package> -- again, not apt-get
I need the --just shut the fuck up and dl&install the darn package option immediately.
I am just too tired and am missing something in the man pages for aptitude and not getting my search terms right but I can't seem to find a way to make aptitude ignore a couple of supposed broken packages (they work just fine by the way). The only way I can find to remidy the situation is to remove those couple of packages or upgrade several things to their Squeeze counter parts. I really don't want to try and do the upgrade as at home I am stuck on a 56k connection. Removing the broken packages I guess won't be too bad if I can find the debs again after I install a couple of things I want to add to my system. I would however just like to make aptitude ignore the state of my system and try to install what I want anyway.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have just installed Debian Lenny and was trying to upgrade the installed packages from the packages.debian.org site. when i asked synaptic to add the downloaded packages the would not appear, but when i checked the .xsessions file there are entries saying that the packages were being ingnored because they were either different versions, the MD5 did not match or even "can't find pkg". i have to use the local library to download the packages because i dont have an internet connection at home.

I have installed Lenny in my labtop. I have problem to install packages; command "make" "make install" "configure" doesn't work. It return: "bash: make: command not found". So I can't install flashplayer :/ Well, I start with Lenny.

Long version: In my sources.lst there is still an entry for the installation DVD.
I like that because if a package on DVD is still the newest version then there is no need to download it again. (If I comment out the DVD entry apt-get update will ignore the DVD but at the same time no package will ever be installed from it again, right?)
Since some time ago this was no problem as apt-get update didn't have a problem with the entry - or if it had (I don't really remember), there was just an error message and the process would continue with the other sources. But then this changed and now I'm asked to insert the disk (luckily I have only one DVD) every time and the routine waits until I have done so.
Is there a way to change that back?
I've read some apt documentation and the apt-* manual pages including apt.conf and some examples for that but could not find something useful though there might be something I missed because I didn't understand everything I saw.
Clearly, it makes sense that DVDs and the like can be included in apt-get update because some people update offline with these media. But (the standard) DVDs are read-only and the individual disks are identified by apt (see /var/lib/apt/cdroms.list). So the system should not expect an already known DVD to change but recognize if a new one is being used.
if there is a way to blacklist certain packages when updates come around. The reason for this is that I have two repositories that contain Smplayer and Mplayer. But one repository versions of this aren't VDPAU active (but the build is newer).

when I have a broken packages on the system and want to apt-get install something (completely unrelated to the broken package) apt-get starts giving me crap about the broken stuff and won't download and install the packages I'm asking for. How can I make it ignore the completely unrelated stuff about missing deps on my system and download what I want?
View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter installing debian 5.0.4 basic from first dvd, I extracted all other dvd images to hard disk and pointed /etc/apt/sources.list point to all these directories.
after refreshing using synaptic package manager, I got list of all 20,000+ packages, and did a
"apt-get -y install ......(all 20,000 names)". It failed due to some conflicts. So I used "--force-yes -f " option as well.
It went on for nearly two days to install everything. (in between due to power failure, something was done half way and was able to login to KDE boot option and see lots of software installed.)
After complete install - it shows a startup screen of Debian EDu - but fails to boot up.
Is there a way to install all softwares + all XWindow systems simultaneously?
On Debian repo I found virtualbox-ose packages there. What will be the difference in operation/function between their packages and the packages download on virtualbox.org website?

Now, as of now, I want to carry out the compilation using 32 bit libraries, however, I really don't want to install 64bit version of all prerequisites each time I switch the compilation from 32 bit to 64. Is there any way to have both architectures at the same time?
I am using grep to filter out directories I am not interested in like this:svn stat | grep -v data/charts | grep -v lib/model | grep -v web/picsIt seems a bit "hacky". Is there a better way to specify more than one string to ignore, so that I dont have to chain multiple grep commands?

I was thinking of downloading them here and transfer and install them on the other machine at a later time but because of dependencies I don't know what packages I'll need besides of the ones I really want, for example: After the fresh install from the cd, I would like to install build-essential which requires g++, make etc... but is there a way to download all that instead of doing it manually? Since I don't really know when to stop downloading dependencies. I tried aptitude download but it only gives me the meta-package. I also thought of chroot to a fresh system, install the packages and retrieve them from the local folder where they get downloaded but I was looking for something less complicated.

Yet I would appreciate a simple overview about the process.Specifically, I would like to start with something simple: building a package with the Firefox 3.5.7 tar.gz pre-compiled binaries.If I understand correctly, the source files from Debian are modified in some way from the upstream provider, but my little Firefox project is not dealing with sources at all. The binaries are already compiled. So I'll appreciate a simple overview about creating a package from those Firefox binaries.
I realize the Firefox binaries can be installed as is, along with needing to create three sym links. That is not my goal. I figured starting with pre-compiled binaries will be an easier start into the Debian packaging process. Further, I prefer to install software with a package manager as that provides a system that is easier to maintain long-term.I suspect that an aide to my learning would be to extract the Iceweasel package and then draw similarities from that.
How to tell the kill command to ignore processes if that process is not alive?
For example: 3453 is an alive process but 44534 is not.

I'm currently studying for my Linux+ test and I'm getting conflicting information regarding the rm -rf command. Yes, I know this a dangerous command, but my question is in regard to how the command functions. In one book I'm studying it says that rm -rf / home/myfolder (there's a space in there) will delete the entire root directory because there is a space between the root and home directory. It says that if there is a spacing such as this, it will ignore anything after the space, so in this case, it would delete the root directory and stop, not that there would be anything left anyway. Then in another book I have, it says that if you did a rm -rf folderName / (with the intention of adding the trailing slash to indicate it is a directory and not a folder) it will delete everything in folderName (assuming it's a child directory of your pwd) and then CONTINUE on and delete the root directory. Now, those two statements contradict each other. When you remove a directory, does the command line ignore anything after a space or not?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to install a command line Debian Squeeze system on n Eee PC 701., but have run into a number of problems:
1) All install info I can find assumes that the person wants to install a GUI system of some sort.
2) The Eee PC has a unique 2 MB. partition that needs to be preserved, so no guided install.
3) The Eee PC has an SSD instead of an HD. Most postings I have seen recommend an install without a swap partition, but the install (both live and text) seems to choke and despite a fresh formatting of the existing partition, claims to be overwriting existing files.
4) I can understand from the wiki that the Eee PC wireless driver (Atheros) should be included in Squeeze, but when the wireless connection and password is added, the installer claims that the password is not correct, despite me having checked it a number of times.
I hope someone can help me out. I just want to use the Eee PC for low resource stuff done on the cli like using a text based web browser to access the net through a wireless router and to hook it up to an external USB HD and to my stereo, to play my music collection.
Debian Lenny worked just great. That was my first experience of Debian. The installer recognised all my hardware and the system was soon up and running brilliantly with a few tweaks. Confident of Debian's reliability, I decided to move to Debian 6 and did a fresh install, with downloads of the new operating system rather than a distribution upgrade. The installation routines have not worked for the same computer system. I don't know if its hardware not being recognised by Debian 6 that were recognised without a problem by Debian 5??
At first, the boot-up flipped at "Waiting for /dev to be fully populated," there was a kernal panic then Debian disappeared. No signal was sent to the monitor and I had to switch off the computer manually
I was able to look into the Debian 6 OS from Arch Linux, installed on different partitions of the same hard-drive. I am able to overwrite the Debian files as root from Arch.
My i686 machine has PATA IDE drives.
Why are 2) dbus and the 3) avahi-demon failing? I need to get them started first so that I can get an internet connection and try and correct the problem with X and the wrong Nvidia driver. Is there some configuration I can do either from Arch, where I am now, or the bash prompt on Debian? Thanks in advance.
I successfully configured my local DNS server. I have server1.mydomain.com, pc1.mydomain.com and so on ..
The problem is that my website is hosted on an external server (not on the local network), so www.mydomain.com is not found in the configured zone/subnet
How can I tweak my DNS to fetch ALL subdomains from the gateway (just as it went before the DNS existed)?
I can't find gnome-mount using aptitude, but certainly it is listed in packages.debian. org/squeeze. Maybe I need add a new repository. But how do I know what is that repository?

APT - it really has me mystified at times so I'm looking for an idiots guide on how to use it. I've googled and read the APT How to on the Debian site, as well as a lot of other APT pages, so I understand what it does and the command structure, but I can't seem to download one off packages from the Debian site.
I've managed to get the updates to work (ran an update the other day) so I know my source file is working (my source.list points to deb http://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian/ lenny main) however I don't understand/can't figure out how to get single packages from Debian.
As an example I want to get the rsynch package which has a download page in Debian and my mirror in the source.list file can be used. However when I do apt-get rsynch I get an error message that says it can't be found.
Looking at the Debian package website it does say that the rsynch package can be requested from the subdirectory of pool/main/r/rsync/ at any one of the listed download sites (of which the site in my source.list file is one of those listed). Do I have to add the pool/main/r/rsync/ information to my sources.list file, or add it to the apt-get command?
After installation the Debian Squeeze when installing some packages the system asks for the installation debian CD. I wonder how i can change the configuration so that the system can install the packages without the CD?
