Jun 29, 2010I recently reinstalled Lenny and I am attempting to save my /home directory. I used the graphical install and when it came to the part about partitioning, I created a new /home partition "hdb1" and told the installer to ignore my old /home partition "/dev/hda9".Following the completion of the install, I logged in and changed my /etc/fstab so that /home --> my old /home partition "/dev/hda9". I then mounted the old partition to /home and rebooted the system. Now, when I go to my /home directory >> properties, I can see that the files I had are on the drive (2GB are used) --- but --- I cannot actually see the files??

May 16, 2010I'm recompiling my kernel on a dell latitude c600 running lenny as I type, and it's taking forever, so far upward of 4 hours.I think I'm getting drivers for ever piece of computing hardware since the univac So I googled "a kernel conf creator" and got [URL]... Its a nice, clean method for finding what hardware your using... you just run lspci cpuinfo make xconfig and put in all the info yourself. So I was thinking: this is exactly the kind of dull, repetitive behavior that computers were made for. Is there a program that can find my hardware info, and make the.config itself, with very little user input?Or should I reinstall debian on another partition and steal the .config from it? Or should I man it up and do it myself?

Nov 19, 2010Due to a bug that will be fixed at squeeze (I'm running lennyx64), I can't mount ntfs partitions from gui interface (or else, directories with non-English characters will be ignored).
So I'm mounting with disk-manager (hd partitions only), or from konsole. Obviously, mounting from konsole, is the only option for usb flash sticks.
Suddenly, just out of the blue, today debian stopped mounting ntfs partitions from konsole. Since this was my only option for mounting safely my friend's sticks, I have a big problem right now.

Debian Configuration :: Adding Compex ReadyLink NIC To Debian Lenny?
Nov 4, 2010I have added a 10 Mbps network card to my SGI O2 MIPS workstation running Debian Lenny running the 26-2 kernel. The workstation already has an onboard NIC which is working fine.(eth0).
lspci -v shows ths card as:-00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Compex ReadyLink 2000 (rev 0a) Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 18 I/O ports at 1800 [disabled] [size=32] Upon googling I found out that this card is an NE2000 clone. I downloaded the latest 2.6.36 kernel sources and did the following:-
1. Make Menuconfig
2. Loaded an alternate kernel config file (my working kernel config file)
3. In DeviceDrivers->Network device support->Ethernet (10 or 100 Mbit)
I selected ASIX AX88796 as the help associated with this showed it as an NE 2000 clone. configured it to be a module and did make, make_modules and make_install. Edited /etc/Modules to load ax88796 and added an alias eth1 ax88796 to this file. copied the new kernel to the /boot and did a reboot, the machine booted up fine and udev -r showed the 2.6.36 kernel and lsmod showed ax88796 loaded. But, Iam not able to bring up eth1 using:-
ifup eth1
The error messages given are:-
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
eth1: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device

Oct 9, 2009When I logout/login to Gnome, and sometimes if I stay logged in for awhile, Gnome resets my desktop settings, especially my remote desktop settings, which is how I remote into this subnet and manage the other web managed things like switches. 1. Can I statically set remote desktop (vino I think) settings so they don't change?2. Are there any gnome applet settings I can change to keep this from happening?

I would have thought that removing a given kernel package would trigger the removal of the older kernel headers. Can someone confirm that is, or is not, the behavior? I ask this because it seemed to me that the older kernel header packages were indeed removed when I removed some older kernel packages.

I would expect apt-get to automatically also remove linux-headers-2.6.25-2-amd64 and linux-headers-2.6.25-2-common. Is that what will happen, or do I need to explicitly state all three packages on the apt-get remove command?

Dec 14, 2009i was trying to use gnome and kde but i don't like them. I tried xfce and it seem to fit my needs but.My computer is used to be powered on for a weeks. While time passes, a process xfdesktop begin to use more and more memory and to free RAM i need to log out and log in again.
I tried squeeze yesterday on my virtual machine and it has 4.6 and seem not to have that bug, RAM usage is static(yes it still works when i write this and have memory usage 34492k, which is not changing for an hours of usage already), also 4.6 is MUCH better than 4.4.
i already tried adding squeeze to "sources.list" but i can see too many dependencies which should be upgraded if i install 4.6, i'm beginning to afraid it can crash entire GUI(or entire system, i can see there is libc6 required to be updated).

I know it's not our home network because my desktop flies (running Windows).Currently, I have the driver from this guide installed. Feb 27, 2010i am trying to get a pxe server working on a debian so other clients can boot off it. the problem has two parts.
1. getting the pxe working. so far the tftp part doesnt work. the client says tftp error. so i guess the dhcp portion is working, but theres something wrong with the /var/lib/tftpboot or the deamon config itself.
2. the other issue is that in the shop many system's have non-working disk drives. also many of them do not have a usb boot option in the bios. all i need to do is get the "bare" kernel file or grub(?) to boot over pxe and give me the ability to boot from a usb flash drive and load the rest of the linux files from there. my primary intention is NOT netinstall. although it wouldnt hurt. my intention is running a linux live usb on systems without bios usb boot support. ive read somewhere that a full pxe live boot requires nfs setup. i am asking for that, just so i can boot from a flash drive.

In order to get a newer kernel that would recognize a linksys usb wifi adapter I got the advice to upgrade to a newer kernel - 2.6.30 or newer. Which I am able to get from backports.
But when I try with .30 or .32 my machine will not boot. I do have a raid, but it is only used for data files - I do not boot from it or have any system files on it.
