Debian Configuration :: Upgrading MPlayer - Missing Description / Maintainer

Sep 3, 2010

Added the following line to sources.list:
deb [URL] squeeze main non-free
After that I did an update and upgrade.
The following packages were kept back : ffmpeg libavcodec52 libavdevice52 libavformat52 libcairo2 libpostproc51 libswscale0 mplayer ( libcairo2 is on hold ).

To overcome this I did: apt-get install mplayer
The following extra packages will be installed:
liba52-0.7.4 libartsc0 libbs2b0 libdirac-decoder0 libfaac0 libggi2 libggiwmh0 libgii1
libmp3lame0 libopencore-amrnb0 libopencore-amrwb0 libvdpau1 libx264-104 libxvidcore4
It ends like: Unpacking replacement mplayer ...

Next thing I tried : apt-get dist-upgrade:
The following packages will be REMOVED:
libavfilter0
The following NEW packages will be installed:
libavcore0 libavfilter1 libavutil50 libva1
The following packages have been kept back:
libcairo2

Ubuntu :: Get The "package Maintainer's Version" Of Grub (chose Local Version!)

Jul 23, 2010

I chose the local version of grub when prompted on the last update. However, after doing a bit of reading, it looks like I should have selected the "package maintainer's version" .

I've looked at the release notes [URL] related to grub and changing the menu.lst. However, when I open the menu.lst per the instructions, it is blank (the file opens but there is no text in it). I also ran the sudo update-grub command but was never prompted to choose a the local version or maintainer's version.

Is there a way to go back and get back to the prompt to select the ""package maintainer's version"?

Debian :: Installing Command Line Debian Squeeze System On Eee PC 701

May 29, 2011

I have been trying to install a command line Debian Squeeze system on n Eee PC 701., but have run into a number of problems:

1) All install info I can find assumes that the person wants to install a GUI system of some sort.
2) The Eee PC has a unique 2 MB. partition that needs to be preserved, so no guided install.
3) The Eee PC has an SSD instead of an HD. Most postings I have seen recommend an install without a swap partition, but the install (both live and text) seems to choke and despite a fresh formatting of the existing partition, claims to be overwriting existing files.
4) I can understand from the wiki that the Eee PC wireless driver (Atheros) should be included in Squeeze, but when the wireless connection and password is added, the installer claims that the password is not correct, despite me having checked it a number of times.

I hope someone can help me out. I just want to use the Eee PC for low resource stuff done on the cli like using a text based web browser to access the net through a wireless router and to hook it up to an external USB HD and to my stereo, to play my music collection.

Debian :: Moving Debian From Virtual System To Physical

Feb 19, 2010

I have been learning Debian by using a virtual machine. After fine-tuning my installation procedure, I decided to copy that installation to my physical system. The hard drive already has another Linux based system installed. I plan to dual boot. After copying files I updated fstab and menu.lst.

The partition scheme between the virtual and physical environments are similar, but the partitions are not mapped exactly the same. Thus the Debian system on the physical hard drive fails to boot. I think the initrd created in the virtual machine is looking for the root file system on /dev/hda1 whereas on my physical drive the new location is /dev/sda7.How can I rebuild the initrd on the physical system? Or how can I build an initrd in the virtual system that will function on the physical system.I started to use the installation DVD in rescue mode, but I did not get too far.

Debian :: Kde Paralyzed - System Has Debian Squeeze

Sep 24, 2010

Once in kde, after an undefined time (can be minutes or hours), mouse cursor start to have a fixed shape (if i am in iceweasel on a link, the mouse can get locked with the hand shape). In this state, the mouse cursor can still be moved, but no program can be launched or closed (X) in kde. I still can launch a new console now (ctrl+atl+F2), "ps" don't show any process consuming cpu (all processes are near 0). "sensors" shows 55*C. Other commands as "kill" going to lock, they don't work and at the same time they don't return the cursor to the shell.

How does the 'testing' version of Debian stabilize? I mean, the updates from upstream are very frequent, so if the Debian maintainers upgrade a package till the very end (for e.g if they just upgrade to 2.6.36), when will they get time to test it (so as to freeze it)?

Debian :: Gnome And KDE On Same System?

Apr 30, 2010

Gnome is my preferred desktop but would also like to use KDE. My question is:

If I install both Gnome and KDE on the same system, when using Gnome I suppose I'd get all the KDE stuff and vice versa making for an overcrowded desktop. Is it possible to have both environments on the same system without this happening?
Put another way, if a computer has two users and one uses KDE and the other Gnome, is there no way to separate the two environments?

Not so good ill admit. With linux, ive spent several hours setting up wireless, sound and games. i dont want to loose all that time if something happens. being new to linux i dont see a back up feature or a way to save the current configuration i have. id hate as a new user to make a stupid mistake and blow the system and loose all my hard work any suggestions? id like to back up the system as it is so i can restore /copy back this set up if possible. whats the tool to use? does it exist in linux?

Debian :: Load On Idle System

Nov 2, 2015

I had noticed that my workstation (running debian testing) is having a constant load of about 0.9 (+/-0.1), even while the system is completly idle. The system starts with a normal load and then goes up to about 0.9 within a few minutes and then will stay there forever (well it can get higher, but never lower). This is the load graph after the system runs some time: URL....

I have tried everything I know to find the cultprint but there is no cpu usage and no io usage. I even have disabled the desktop and still have this problem. Also I have tried booting an older Kernel (4.1 and 3.16) with no difference in the load. Here is some information about my system:

Code: Select all» uname -a
Linux localhorst 4.2.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.2.3-2 (2015-10-14) x86_64 GNU/Linux.

Debian :: Crypto On System Slows Down ?

Dec 25, 2010

I've got a Lenny system on a quad core system with 4GB of ram. Currently Linux www 2.6.26-2-amd64 #1 SMP Thu Nov 25 02:05:44 UTC 2010 x86_64

I've had it for a couple of years, and its been fine, very fast and reliable.

Lately, its got a problem: after its been running for a day or two, access using SSH, or TLS/HTTPS gets really slow. Painfully slow. A reboot returns the system to normal fast operation.

I can't think of anything that has changed, other than I got a new SSL cert and installed it.

The system is mostly a vanity domain server, with Apache HTTPD running a half dozen very low volume services. Its running bind9, mysql, and a few other things, nothing big, nothing that would load down a quad core with lots of ram. The disk is only 14% used.

Debian :: Opy Entire System From Virtual Box?

Feb 20, 2011

I supposed to install a server (mail, dns, dhcp etc) but we need to record all the steps that we're doing, thats why i decided to setup a virtual machine and record everything with Xvidcap (which works great by the way).

The problem:

Now we need to test this server at school which means i have to take my computer to school and setup up a network overthere, whats the big deal about this? my computer case is a huge xclio a380 which weights about 35lbs (not kidding) so taking this thing to school riding a bus 3 hours to get there every weekend is not a good idea.

Is it possible to make a copy of the entire system and put it on a laptop?
