Ubuntu :: Upgraded From Maverick To The Natty Beta - Unable To Boot

Apr 8, 2011

I upgraded from Maverick to the Natty beta a little while ago. It all worked fine for a couple of weeks. Then, this morning, I was unable to boot. I got to GRUB, picked the first option and it went to the Ubuntu 11.04 with the dots, then returned this:

Code:
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2
/dev/sdb2: clean, 330122/2170880 files, 7302496/8683520 blocks
init: udevtrigger main process (367) terminated with status 1
init: udevtrigger post-stop process (372) terminated with status 1
init: udevmonitor main process (366) killed by TERM signal

Ubuntu Servers :: Upgraded From Maverick To Natty - Installed Unwanted Extra Packages

Apr 30, 2011

I upgraded my dedicated server using the do-release-upgrade command, and it seems to have installed many extra packages I do not require. This is a headless server in a datacentre, yet the upgrade caused me to install GUI packages I do not need. Is there a way to quickly remove all but the default server packages?

Ubuntu :: (MAVERICK) 10.10 Beta Will Not Let Log In

Sep 4, 2010

I was running Ubuntu 10.04 and yesterday I decided to test drive the 10.10 beta. After updating to 10.10 and rebooting, all I now get is the login screen with all the icons displaying as an 'X' and more importantly, no actual login prompt. I know just enough about Ubuntu to properly break it, but I am at a loss as to how to fix this, since it doesn't give me the option of opening a terminal.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgraded 10.04 To 10.10, Unable To Boot Normally?

Oct 10, 2010

I had upgraded Ubuntu 10.04 (which had worked fine) to 10.10 and now if I try to boot normally, I see the "Ubuntu 10.10" text and startup meter... thing for only about a second, then it becomes a pure purple screen and all disk activity stops. I can still boot through Recovery mode with a failsafe X session and Windows (my other OS) can still boot. Along with that my desktop wallpaper is completely white. My PC is an Acer Aspire 4530-6823 with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 QL-62 dual-core processor clocked at 2GHz, a NVIDIA GeForce 9100M G and has a dual-boot between Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 set up

Ubuntu :: No 3D Graphics In Natty Beta 1?

Apr 5, 2011

I wanted to try out the Natty beta 1, but apparently it fails to load the graphics drivers. When I run the "Additional drivers" app, no drivers are listed. I installed the nvidia-current package and rebooted, but nothing happened. This problem occurs with an install in a VirtualBox machine, as well as with the live CD. Running Maverick with Compiz and the proprierary Nvidia drivers on a Lenovo T61 with Nvidia Quadro NVS 140, built in 2008. I hope this machine is not too old already to upgrade to Natty?! What can I do to see the fully graphics-enabled Natty/Unity desktop on my laptop?

Ubuntu :: Upgraded To Maverick; Can't Change Theme?

I just upgraded to Maverick, and now I can't change my theme except for the cursor and window border/decoration.I've just reinstalled the themes I want to use (Dust + Dust extra) successfully, and while the window border/decorations change properly when I select them, nothing else changes. The icon set doesn't change;gnome-panel doesn't change. I'm stuck on the fugly fallback theme - the one you see when you do gksudo gedit or something.

Ubuntu :: Can't Login After Installing Natty Beta

Apr 1, 2011

I just tried upgrading to the Natty beta. I am having a problem logging in now. When I boot up I get to the GDM login window and try to log in. Then I get an error message that says: Failed to load session "ubuntu" And then I click log out and it just states me back to the login screen. There is no menu to select sessions or anything on the login screen, just the shutdown menu and the clock.

--Edit-- I fixed part of the problem and I can access my sessions now. I can log in using GnomeShell, but any of the other options result in "failed to load session 'ubuntu'" or "failed to load session 'gnome-classic'". I'm getting the feeling something is broken with Gnome, but I don't know what.

Ubuntu Networking :: Upgraded To Maverick But Now Cannot Get Wireless Card Working?

Mar 24, 2010

I've upgraded to Maverick but now I cannot get my wireless card working. In Lucid it didn't work out of the box, but worked perfectly by wrapping the Windows driver with ndiswrapper.

I noticed when I installed Maverick that wireless is enabled in Network-Manager and it gives me the option to create a wireless network or connect to a hidden network but it's not discovering/showing any of the wireless networks in range! So it seems as though the card is being recognized but the driver isn't working fully...? I tried wrapping the windows drivers, but that didn't change the situation at all.

Details of my system:

Code:

Ubuntu 10.10

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgraded To Maverick Meerkat, Getting Black Screen?

Nov 10, 2010

I upgraded my laptop from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat). Upon rebooting after the upgrade I get a black screen. No login window, nothing. Just a black, empty void on my screen. My laptop has a Nvidia graphics card, and reading around on the internet I heard that there is a problem with Meerkat and Nvidia cards, something to do with the driver or some such thing. Is there a way to fix this?I'm wondering if it's possible to boot Ubuntu into a command line interface instead of X Windows, log in, and change the driver settings in xorg.conf? How would I go about booting into the command line? Is there a sequence of keys to press at boot time?

Ubuntu :: Comupter Crash After Trying To Install Natty Narwhal Beta?

Apr 25, 2011

I was going to install the Beta for Ubuntu 11.04 using the command update-manager -d. Everything went fine accept the fact that I had maybe two other programs running the same time as the update wich made my computer performance get really high wich ended in overheating and that my computer (using a laptop, of course) shut off. When I started my laptop again it will not go any further than the Ubuntu start screen saying something like "The device / cannot be found or is not ready yet". Can I all my files although I haven't done any backup?

However, when I now run System -> About Ubuntu, I'm told I'm running Natty Narwhal 11.04, rather than Ubuntu 10.10 which I was aiming for. I never noticed this earlier, though... I guess it's a month or two since I upgraded.Did something go wrong in the update and cause this to happen by mistake?I there a way for me to downgrade to 10.10?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Encrypted DVD Playback In Maverick Or Natty?

Jun 16, 2011

this is on three separate laptops; an HP Pavilion 4120se, a Sony Vaio VGN-S5XP and a Dell Studio XPS1340. All are showing the same symptoms, though the first two are running 10.10 and the last is dual-boot Win7Pro and Natty 64-bit. All are UK models with a Region 2 restriction. The dual boot machine will run all legal movie DVDs perfectly under Windows 7 Professional. All three installations will run educational and similar DVDs. On all 3, Medibuntu repo is enabled, Ubuntu Restricted Extras are installed, as is libdvdcss2 and libdvdread4 (if those 2 can co-exist!). I'm using Movie Player and VLC.

I have tried UK retail commercial Region 2 movie DVDs, foreign region-free movie DVDs, Chinese pirate movie DVDs. None work. However, Licklibrary guitar instructional DVDs work fine - so the drives are OK! I've tried the oldest movie DVDs I have, and the same result. MP in Maverick tells me, "Could not read from resource" (VLC just does nothing!), and in Natty it says, "Could not read DVD. This may be because the DVD is encrypted and a DVD decryption library is not installed".

I have read as much as I can of the sticky above, and searched through every 'can't play DVDs' thread - hence the installation of all the above-mentioned software, codecs and libraries, all to no avail. Is it simply that the lack of commercial kick-backs from open-source software means Linux users will not be allowed to view movie content, or is there something fundamental I'm missing?

Ubuntu Installation :: Why Is Natty Minimal Install So Much Bigger Than On Maverick?

May 25, 2011

I have a couple of 64bit Maverick installs from the minimal CD.They each have about 1100 packages installed. When I started to upgrade one to Natty with the Upgrade Manager, it told me it wanted to install 205 new packages (along with upgrading 877).205 new packages seems like a lot of growth in the minimal install. Why do I need those 205 packages? Then I looked at the minimal CD page where I saw that the minimal CD itself (which has lists of packages not the packages) grew from 15.6 to 22MB.So, did the minimal install just bloat up with Natty or what? Is there an even-more-minimal install?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot To XP Of Maverick On Dual-boot System

Nov 10, 2010

When I first installed Ubuntu as a dual-boot (about 18 months ago), I had problems booting to XP, which were eventually solved for me in this thread, which set Windows to boot Ubuntu, rather than the other way round.

I've just had to do a fresh install of Maverick, following a major problem, and I'm back to being unable to boot XP. The error is different from before and I don't want to start guessing at what to do about it and screwing things up still further.

The GRUB menu lists Ubuntu first, then Windows XP. If I choose XP, it takes me to my previous boot menu, with Windows as the first option. However, selecting this gives me

Code:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>system32
toskml.exe

Please re-install a copy of the above file. Windows and Ubuntu are on separate hard drives. XP was fine until I re-installed Ubuntu.
