Ubuntu Networking :: Upgraded To Natty But Since Doing So The Wicd Icon Is Missing?

May 19, 2011

I have just upgraded to Natty but since doing so the Wicd icon is missing. Everything is working ok, connection is as it should be but I would prefer to have the icon showing that I am connected to my network.

I have spent hours looking for a solution and tried several different remedies, none of which work.

Ubuntu :: Natty System Settings Missing All But 1 Icon?

Jun 19, 2011

My gnome-control-panel (or System Settings) only shows a 'Users' icon, all the rest are gone. I've tried reinstalling gnome-control-center and all related pkgs, so it's a configuration problem of some sort. I see this if I enter a Unity session, Gnome Classic, or Gnome-Session.Here's a screenshot of what it looks like:

Ubuntu :: Missing / Invisible Power Button Icon In Natty

May 16, 2011

My power button icon on the toolbar in Unity is invisible -- that is, it occupies the far right-most column of pixels and displays no icon. (See attached screenshot -- the power button menu only comes up with the mouse all the way to the far right (where you can't really see it in the screencap.)).Any idea how to get it back? It's not a big deal, but it'd be nice to avoid being made fun of by my OS X/Wind0ze-using friends for having an invisible power button.I have Natty installed, but using the same /home (and thus the same config files) from previous installs. Might that be the problem?

Slackware :: Upgraded WICD - Cannot Connect To Wireless Point

May 24, 2011

I just upgraded to 13.37, and for some reason wicd now cannot connect to my wireless point. It keeps saying the password is wrong, when I know for an absolute fact that it is correct (even changed the password to '1' just to make sure, and no dice. Which is weird because even though its the exact same version of wicd, and not only that, it no longer seems to be able to see networks with my built in card, so having to use a USB card. Anyway, googling turned up very little. Seems to be a common problem across distros, and some people reported that downgrading to 1.6.x fixes it.

So, I ran
Code:
removepkg wicd
And it uninstalled wicd. Downloaded wicd-1.6.2.1-x86_64-1.txz from a 13.0 mirror and did

Code:
installpkg wicd-1.6.2.1-x86_64-1.txz
While in the correct directory. It installed, and I ran wicd. But checking the version number when it loaded, it says its 1.7.0 again.

Not really sure why this happens. I'm assuming there's some remnant of wicd that removepkg doesn't dump, and its preventing me from installing this older version of wicd. What do I need to do for this? If anyone has a surefire way to make 1.7 work again, that would be fine.

Ubuntu Networking :: Nm-applet Icon Missing From Panel

Jul 2, 2011

In 11.04 on a Dell Latitude D610 laptop, there are two logins. User1 has sudo privs, User2 does not. When either user logs in, network-manager picks up on whatever remembered wireless network is available, connects, and the nm icon shows in the panel. If the other user logs in (via Switch User), the connection persists, but the nm icon does not show in the panel.

Under 11.04 it appears there is no way to put the nm icon back in the panel, even when the connection is set to "available to all users", and even when the user missing the icon is User1 (who has sudo privs). If control is now switched back to the first user who logged in, the nm icon is still there, and the system is still connected, but if that user logs off (rather than clicking Switch User), the connection is dropped, and when the other user gives their password to resume their session, there is now neither connection nor an icon with which it can be re-established.

This would appear to be a bug, but is there a way to ***FORCE*** the nm icon to appear in the panel? The connection is already set to "available to all users", and doing a networking start does not do anything. Under 11.04 it appears that there is no way to make any icon appear in the panel if it is not already there.

I guess it's a month or two since I upgraded.Did something go wrong in the update and cause this to happen by mistake?I there a way for me to downgrade to 10.10?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgraded-Missing Grub-not Booting

Jun 8, 2010

Had v9.x installed alongside Windows XP SP3 install. Have not used it that much since install.
Got the bug to upgrade to v10.

Went through the upgrade process, everything seemed fine.

At the end of the install process asked which dev to install GRUB onto - I selected only one drive, the wrong one of course, and the reboot failed.

Boots up with:

Have LiveCD running now to post. Ran Info_boot Script.sh - results below.

Will reinstalling v10 from Live CD fix this? Will this use Wubi or just go through normal install process? Or is there an easier fix to install GRUB on the correct drive to get the dual boot choice of Windows XP and Ubuntu back.

Naturally I need to get back to Windows ASAP - it's the net gateway and print server for my home/office setup.

Ubuntu :: Natty: Dash Icon Size And Removing Workspace Switcher?

I did my best to search for any solutions but came up empty-handed. Is it possible to reduce the size of the dash icons in Natty? They are unnecessarily massive for my taste. Please note that I am not talking about the launcher icons which can be resized in Tweak.

Is it possible to remove the workspace switcher icon from the launcher? [solved] I've removed the places icons as per this thread and wouldn't mind removing this icon as well.

Ubuntu :: GRUB Files Missing In Natty Narwhal (11.04)

Jan 14, 2011

A couple months ago, I created a dual boot between Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 using wubi. I then upgraded to 10.10. What would usually happen is I would start up my laptop and it'll go to the Windows boot manager, letting me choose between Windows 7 and Ubuntu. If I would choose Ubuntu, it would go to a GRUB boot manager. It would let me choose between several different ways to boot Ubuntu, mainly that there were different options that were all the same except they had different numbers in the name, i.e. Ubuntu, whatever, 14.33.22.19.25 or something like that.

A couple weeks ago, I updated to 11.04. At first it worked good, but then a couple days later I updated a bunch of packages. It tried to CAT a GRUB file and failed. It gave me an error code, but I ignored it. Yesterday, I updated again, but since last time failed, it told me to do a partial upgrade. This I did, and it was successful. But now, everytime I go to GRUB and try to select any of the options, it tells me "Error: File not Found" and I cannot boot into Ubuntu. There are recovery versions for each choice, and using these I can boot into Ubuntu in low graphics mode and I can also get to a command line prompt.

Ubuntu :: Adobe Flash Properties Missing In Natty?

i have an issue with Flash flickering with ATI X1600 and Natty. I saw suggestions to disable hardware accelleration by right-clicking on a flash video then going to settings. When i do that it takes me to Adobe's web page and it states that for linux there should be a control panel application to change flash settings. I do not see that anywhere in Natty. When i checked online I see some mention of a "adobe-flash-properties-gtk" but I do not see that anywhere in the repos. I also enabled the partner repo but no luck. How can one change the settings for flash in Ubuntu Natty 11.04?

Ubuntu :: Nautilus Actions 3.0.5 - Natty Missing Addons In Context Menu

Apr 30, 2011

Upon a fresh installation of Ubuntu Natty, I have noticed only a couple of my nautilus-actions are actually showing up in the context menu. On further review, I noticed Nautilus-actions has changed a lot, and I cannot seem to figure out why most of my actions are not showing up. It seems no matter what I change, they will not show up. Some of the ones I cannot seem to get up are 'Wipe' commands and several of my homemade ones that worked flawlessly in past Ubuntu versions, such as Chown, Make Executable, Renamer, among others. Oddly, two of them work just fine, Search Here and Open Root Nautilus. I am not sure why these work, while the others do not, other than they are not used by selecting item(s)/folders. Also, I noticed there is a change with the parameters, in which now all of them use %F instead of %M. Does anybody know why that is, and/or does it really matter. FYI, I am using the classic version, not Unity as my desktop.
