Ubuntu Installation :: Why Is Natty Minimal Install So Much Bigger Than On Maverick?

May 25, 2011

I have a couple of 64bit Maverick installs from the minimal CD.They each have about 1100 packages installed. When I started to upgrade one to Natty with the Upgrade Manager, it told me it wanted to install 205 new packages (along with upgrading 877).205 new packages seems like a lot of growth in the minimal install. Why do I need those 205 packages? Then I looked at the minimal CD page where I saw that the minimal CD itself (which has lists of packages not the packages) grew from 15.6 to 22MB.So, did the minimal install just bloat up with Natty or what? Is there an even-more-minimal install?

Ubuntu :: Maverick (10.10) Dual Monitor- Desktop Bigger Than Screen?

Jan 20, 2011

Im running a wee Aspire One, 1024*600 with an external monitor 1024*768 (maverick desktop edition- 10.10) I have them set up independently, the external is to the right, and above my aspire. I have set this up in the monitors options. But it seems the desktop environment (although not the backgrounds) extend off to the right of my aspire (under the external) and to the left of my external- (above my aspire).

I know that it may be nit-picking, but it is a right pain when I 'loose' stuff on this phantom desktop space. For example- when i move my cursor into one of these spaces- and have to wiggle it about till it pops onto one of the screens. Also- i'd like my screensaver to pop up on both screens, and span them both- not just be repeated on both...

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Encrypted DVD Playback In Maverick Or Natty?

Jun 16, 2011

this is on three separate laptops; an HP Pavilion 4120se, a Sony Vaio VGN-S5XP and a Dell Studio XPS1340. All are showing the same symptoms, though the first two are running 10.10 and the last is dual-boot Win7Pro and Natty 64-bit. All are UK models with a Region 2 restriction. The dual boot machine will run all legal movie DVDs perfectly under Windows 7 Professional. All three installations will run educational and similar DVDs. On all 3, Medibuntu repo is enabled, Ubuntu Restricted Extras are installed, as is libdvdcss2 and libdvdread4 (if those 2 can co-exist!). I'm using Movie Player and VLC.

I have tried UK retail commercial Region 2 movie DVDs, foreign region-free movie DVDs, Chinese pirate movie DVDs. None work. However, Licklibrary guitar instructional DVDs work fine - so the drives are OK! I've tried the oldest movie DVDs I have, and the same result. MP in Maverick tells me, "Could not read from resource" (VLC just does nothing!), and in Natty it says, "Could not read DVD. This may be because the DVD is encrypted and a DVD decryption library is not installed".

I have read as much as I can of the sticky above, and searched through every 'can't play DVDs' thread - hence the installation of all the above-mentioned software, codecs and libraries, all to no avail. Is it simply that the lack of commercial kick-backs from open-source software means Linux users will not be allowed to view movie content, or is there something fundamental I'm missing?

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Minimal Install On Netbook

Feb 19, 2010

I've been playing with Ubuntu for severla years, although I've been a casual user, always just installing from the live disc. I'm comfortable with apt-get, and not scared to format, reformat, get angry, calm down, reinstall, etc.

I'd like to upgrade my Dell Mini 9 netbook wti 9.10. one of my problems with 9.04 is space. with the standard install I'm using 3.7 of my 4 Gb of HD and want to try and streamline that. I've starting have problems upgrading my apps because of space to downlod the upgrade to.

I plan on formating and starting from scratch with the minimal CD (transfered to USB), but I want a clear recipe of steps.

Main goals:
- Standard gnome interface (not remix)
- Open office writer, calc, and impress
- Chromium

I know once I get started to type "cli" to install the basics, but then what? Many of the guides I've seen online are several years old. I can handle chromium and Open Office once I'm all up and running, but I don't want to install and then uninstall firefox, gimp, etc.

Ubuntu Installation :: Possible To Do Minimal Install With 3G Modem?

Jan 13, 2011

I recently downloaded the latest minimal Ubuntu ISO from the official download page.

Is it possible to do a minimal install if I do not have Ethernet capable internet?

I use one of those 3G (cellular) USB modems from companies like Verizon. Basically, it's a cell-phone, with the phone component taken out.

I did something similar with Debian recently, but I had to install the kernel along with the 'dpkg' package, to the HDD. From there, I had to reboot into the core system, install the packages like ppp, wvdial, etc, and then continue with a fresh install of the rest of the system.

There doesn't seem to be a way for me to either install the core files to HDD, or install the internet connectivity packages in the live environment for my modem.

Debian Installation :: Minimal GUI Install With Web Browser

Nov 1, 2014

I have recently acquired a micro-sized-PC (A Dell FX130) which comes with a VIA C7 processor, 1GB RAM and 1GB onboard flash. The only application I need is a web-browser, I will use the FX130 to access a (very limited) number of web applications and to download/print-html-to-PDF - putting files onto a USB thumb-drive. I want to encrypt the disk to guard against tampering, and to run a restrictive firewall.

When I try to install the i386 debian-7.7.0 image - I run into the snag that it won't let me use guided configuration for the 1GB flash drive... and - when I guess at a sensible partitioning... I find that I run out of space during the standard installs. I note, however, that a whole bunch of significant applications (which I don't need) are being installed.

I am sure I'm missing something - is there an easy way to do a "minimal" GUI install that would make it easy to fit (just) a web browser (Chrome - ideally) and dependencies onto a 1GB bootable flash drive in a 'Debian-standard' fashion?

The installer is not able to find my wireless connection stating "No Network Interfaces Detected". I did try to install yesterday in town with a friends wired internet connection and I got the same result. Ubuntu Installation :: Wired Minimal Install - No Network Interfaces Detected?

Jul 18, 2010

I'm trying to do a minimal install via a USB flash drive. Everything was good until it tried to recognize my network (wired). It showed "No Network Interfaces Detected" (On Ubuntu and Debian). I wish to do a minimal install since I want to install the programs I want myself. Plus, I have a small flash drive.

I'm using an Atheros AR8151 PCI-E as my card (as shown by Windows). I also have a wireless, though I don't care much about that, wired will probably be easier. Through the command shell, I can see Ethernet Controller: Atheros Communications AR8151 v1.0 Gigabit Ethernet (rev c0). When I do plug the Ethernet cable in, I don't get the lights on during Linux installation but they do come on in Windows. If I need some additional driver, can I somehow add it to the minimal installation? I was looking through the log file and found that i82365 could not be loaded, a PCMCIA controller. I'm assuming this is separate from the NIC and interfaces between the bus and the NIC.

no idea whether it's because it couldn't find the drivers or because the controller was incorrectly identified. But I'm pretty sure this is why I can't get my network card to work.

Ubuntu Installation :: Perform A Minimal Install To A USB Attached Hard Drive?

Dec 28, 2010

I'm trying to figure out how to perform a minimal install to a USB attached hard drive. A full install works just fine, when I start the install from the LiveCD desktop, all the USB drives are visible and can be installed to. In the minimal install, the requisite kernel modules for USB storage don't seem to be loaded, therefore, my USB hard drive is not visible and cannot be mounted, partitioned, or installed to.

The reason behind this is I'm trying to build an XBMC install on a USB hard drive and want only the minimum backend OS that's necessary as some of the Ubuntu desktop software causes issues with some of the XBMC software. I've posted on the XBMC boards about this, but my questions have gone completely unanswered,

Fedora Installation :: Minimal Install Media - 'ext4 Cannot Be Used For Boot' Error

Jun 15, 2009

I live in a country where 1Mbit broadband is a premium service for large businesses. I am paying a little over $40 a month for a 128k connection with monthly capping. I want to download Fedora but the download is just huge for my connection, especially as it is used for work 14 hours a day. I have attempted the LiveCD and got the 'ext4 cannot be used for boot' error. I also have several other specialised distros on this machine and it's going to be a pain inserting a new boot partition just for Fedora.

Like it is possible with Slackware, can I just download the first CD of the Fedora 11 set and get a minimal install from this or does Fedora need the whole set of disks? Is there a simple enough net install option that I could use instead? I can't understand why they can't just release something like Ubuntu's alternate install CD.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Install Packages In Maverick (10.10)?

Feb 4, 2011

I decided to give a new download of Ubuntu 10.10 a chance. It went on fine,I even installed VirtualBox with noi problem, But I am light on assessories, particularly gimp. I tried the Ubuntu Software Center, then I tried the Synaptic Package Manager for this and other packages, and guess what? I kept getting errors like this:dpkg: failed to read on buffer copy for copy info file `/var/lib/dpkg/available': Input/output error
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)I even found a link that showed how to include gimp on 10.04 or 10.10 with a few command line statement, and I thought that would fly, but I got the same error again. Another problem is that my monitor keeps fading to a sort of blue-gray color indicating the processor is having trouble keeping up, but I have only FireFox running, and the keyboard locks up after after just a a smaill handful of charactrers are typed, then after about 10 seconds or so, the keyboard buffer flushes to the screen.

This certainly is not typical of earlier Ubuntu versions, and I wonder if anybody else has similar problems or knows the cause and cure.I am down to the point of asking myself, what is so urgent with the Ubuntu developers that we are having more and more conflicts between hardware and software to resolve with each new release? And that they are pulling more and more packages out of the LiveCD in order to make room for something that is bulking up in some other manner? What are you people up to, make Ubuntu more like Windows with coming releases? If I wanted Windows, I would stick with or get a newer version of Windows.

Ubuntu Servers :: Create A New Server Package And Leave Minimal Minimal?

Feb 17, 2010

After a long time I tried ubuntu(9.10) again on my fileserver, I have some remarks; why does a minimal server installation include X/openoffice? I don't need document conversion on a fileserver and I bet a lot of people don't. Wouldn't it be better to create a new server package and leave minimal minimal? low memory installs (64mb) don't work unless you configure swap by hand in between things, 64mb ram is a lot in my eyes. I mean, not to be rude but if I wanted all this I could've better installed Solaris.

That said it's stable and running fine. Since it's my home fileserver I tried to convert my previously created raid10 mirror on an adaptec 1200 card to a softraid 5 solution. This is wat I did:
