Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Natty Narwhal Will Not Connect To Router
Jun 1, 2011I have Ubuntu 11.04 Natty and when I started it the first time it wasn't connected to the Internet. I refreshed and did the basic stuff. But it wasn't so simple. I went to Network Tools and Natty didn't recognize my router. I am not connected through Ethernet either. I can't do/can't afford to do an ethernet hookup. I don't want to spend my time running a cable to the floor below my CPU. Anyway, I have a Broadcom 4306 Network Controller. I am currently using my Windows to post. Also, I can't get drivers from Synaptic or anything (that includes NDISwrapper). Can I use Windows drivers without downloading NDISwrapper? I'm so confused and starting to think this is hopeless. Even worse: I don't have a disk for installing Ubuntu, I downloaded online alongside Windows with Wubi, Again, my network controller is a Broadcom 4306.

This is a headless server in a datacentre, yet the upgrade caused me to install GUI packages I do not need. Is there a way to quickly remove all but the default server packages?

Networking :: PPTP Client Fails To Connect To Microsoft ISA PPTP Server?
Sep 17, 2009I'm trying to connect to a Microsoft ISA PPTP server from my Linux box. The box I'm connecting from is itself a router. I have no problem connecting a Windows XP machine to the VPN via this machine. This is fine, but I would rather connect via the Linux machine, giving me far more advanced routing options (i.e. no to send every packet from the XP box completely unnecessarily via the PPTP tunnel). The Linux router is running Debian Lenny.
I've checked iptables. There were initially some issues. I've fixed those.
Invoking pppd from the console, I can see that authentication succeeds, but then some negotiation goes wrong and the server terminates the connection. Here's the output from pppd, with the more sensitive stuff removed:

Ubuntu Servers :: Can't Get Any Of Componants To Connect To The Jabberd2-router?
Jul 12, 2010Alright so i have been trying to setup a XMPP server for internal chat for a small company..now my issue is i can't get any of componants to connect to the jabberd2-router..I have done the nessessary modification of the xml files in /etc/jabberd2 but i can't figure out what is wrong. Jan 14, 2011I have 5 linux ssh servers at my office that are behind a router. How do I connect to any one specific server from outside the LAN? Do I have to port forward the router giving each machine it's own port? That seems clunky.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Encrypted DVD Playback In Maverick Or Natty?
Jun 16, 2011this is on three separate laptops; an HP Pavilion 4120se, a Sony Vaio VGN-S5XP and a Dell Studio XPS1340. All are showing the same symptoms, though the first two are running 10.10 and the last is dual-boot Win7Pro and Natty 64-bit. All are UK models with a Region 2 restriction. The dual boot machine will run all legal movie DVDs perfectly under Windows 7 Professional. All three installations will run educational and similar DVDs. On all 3, Medibuntu repo is enabled, Ubuntu Restricted Extras are installed, as is libdvdcss2 and libdvdread4 (if those 2 can co-exist!). I'm using Movie Player and VLC.
I have tried UK retail commercial Region 2 movie DVDs, foreign region-free movie DVDs, Chinese pirate movie DVDs. None work. However, Licklibrary guitar instructional DVDs work fine - so the drives are OK! I've tried the oldest movie DVDs I have, and the same result. MP in Maverick tells me, "Could not read from resource" (VLC just does nothing!), and in Natty it says, "Could not read DVD. This may be because the DVD is encrypted and a DVD decryption library is not installed".
I have read as much as I can of the sticky above, and searched through every 'can't play DVDs' thread - hence the installation of all the above-mentioned software, codecs and libraries, all to no avail. Is it simply that the lack of commercial kick-backs from open-source software means Linux users will not be allowed to view movie content, or is there something fundamental I'm missing?

Ubuntu Installation :: Why Is Natty Minimal Install So Much Bigger Than On Maverick?
May 25, 2011I have a couple of 64bit Maverick installs from the minimal CD.They each have about 1100 packages installed. When I started to upgrade one to Natty with the Upgrade Manager, it told me it wanted to install 205 new packages (along with upgrading 877).205 new packages seems like a lot of growth in the minimal install.Why do I need those 205 packages?Then I looked at the minimal CD page where I saw that the minimal CD itself (which has lists of packages not the packages) grew from 15.6 to 22MB.So, did the minimal install just bloat up with Natty or what? Is there an even-more-minimal install?

Jan 18, 2011I am having trouble connecting back to my vpn at work while I'm at home. Mainly need to get our local svn repos for at home development. I successfully connected to the vpn following this [URL]..I am running Lucid Lynx 64bit and I followed the 9.10 section of the tutorial on setting up PPTP connection.
It worked fine. Then I walked away from my computer and it was disconnected when I came back 2 hours later. I was unable to connect back to it. I used my laptop which is running windows 7 and it connected just fine. So, now I am unable to connect to it and have no idea why. I viewed my system log and don't know what to do with the information. Could someone help me out on this.

General :: Unable To Connect To PPTP VPN With Ubuntu 10.04?
Aug 15, 2010I'm trying to connect to my corporate VPN using a laptop running Ubuntu 10.04. It's a company laptop but as I have chosen to run Linux rather than "a proper" OS, I'm mostly on-my-own as far as getting these things working. Normally that's OK because I am almost always successful - except this problem has had me stumped for several weeks now.
The problem is that I am unable to access the VPN from my home network. I am using the Gnome Network Manager interface to configure the PPTP connection but no matter what combination of options, domainusername formats, encryption options or authentication methods I select, I get the exact same behaviour, which is essentially a 10-second wait, and then a failure message. I checked /var/log/daemon.log:

the laptop is connecting to the Internet via a WiFi access point (bridge mode), then an ADSL router. PPTP pass-through is enabled on the ADSL router and Access Point. if I connect the laptop to the ADSL with an ethernet cable (to eliminate the WiFi), there is no improvement. another laptop (running Mac OSX) is able to connect to the VPN, via WiFi or cable. another client, Windows7, is able to connect to the VPN via cable. an iPhone is able to connect to the VPN via WiFi. this laptop is able to connect to the VPN from inside the corporate firewall.
So I've got three other devices that are able to connect to the target PPTP VPN, and a laptop that can't, except when I move the laptop inside the target network, it can connect. I've tried methodically selecting various VPN options with no change in result. I've also read several Ubuntu Forum posts suggesting turning off EAP and that doesn't help either. I'm now at a loss how to fix this, and what will happen next is I'll be told by Management "we told you so", drop Linux and switch to a "proper" OS like Windows instead, which I really don't want to do.
Networking :: Set Up A Laptop As A Router To Connect Wirelessly To ADSL Router?
Nov 6, 2009I have a desktop PC running Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7, and a Eee PC 701 laptop running EasyPeasy Ubuntu 9.04. I'd like to connect the desktop to the laptop with a wired connection (eth0), then the laptop to my ADSL router using wireless (ath0).
I have a crossover ethernet cable (I bought on ebay). I have set up my laptop with a static IP address on my LAN and it uses OpenDNS.
I have added this to /etc/sysctl.conf on the laptop:
net.ipv4.ip_forward=1
Then I tried this on the laptop:
sudo iptables --table nat --append POSTROUTING --out-interface ath0 -j MASQUERADE
sudo iptables --append FORWARD --in-interface eth0 -j ACCEPT
This is a variation on what I found on other sites describing how to set up a router. I don't understand iptables very well, but I gather that the above two lines should set up forwarding so that traffic from my router to the laptop will be forwarded to the desktop, and vice versa.
But this doesn't work. The connection doesn't even establish between the laptop and the desktop.

Sep 10, 2010I'm trying to establish a connection to my ISP which uses PPTP protocol and a VPN server. The deivce I got from my ISP is a modem, not a router. The problem is my computer is unable to communicate with the ISP VPN server.

At my home office i have a class C lan with a Fedora 13 machine. I can get fedora 13 to connect using pptp no problem. I have my router running tomato set to redirect all traffic to teh 10.0.0.0 network to my linux server. My questions is how to I make the fedora 13 machine pass all the traffic from my network with destination 10.0.0.0 over the vpn tunnel? so for instance if i ping anything 10.x.x.x from any machine on my network it will find it and reply?

2. Open the Network Connections item in Control Panel. A list of existing dial-up and LAN connections will appear.
3. Choose the 'Create a new connection' item from the left-hand side of the window. The Windows XP New Connection Wizard will appear on the screen.
4. First click Next to begin the wizard, then choose the 'Connect to the network at my workplace' item from the list and click Next.
5. On the Network Connection page of the wizard, choose the 'Virtual Private Network connection' option and click Next.
6. Enter a name for the new VPN connection in the 'Company Name' field and click Next. The name chosen need not match the name of an actual business.
7. Choose an option on the 'Public Network' screen and click Next. The default option, 'Automatically dial this initial connection' can be used if the VPN connection will always be initiated when the computer is not already connected to the Internet. 8. Enter the name or IP address of the VPN remote access server to connect to, and click Next. Company network administrators will provide this information.

But in Centos how we can able to configure PPTP VPN for this we need to install any package. I got all the vpn access credentials from my office to work from home, but i cant able to join in my office network. because of this prob.

Mar 24, 2010I followed (or at least tried to follow) tutorials on doing this. I installed network-manager-pptp and tried to configure network manager to connect to a VPN. In the settings when I select MPPE with 128-bit encryption, after I've selected it and applied it, I check the settings and it's invariably unchecked. I tried using KVpnc after getting frustrated with network manager, and I can't seem to get that working either. I've been trying to search for info on this, and I can't seem to find anything on why I can't select MPPE with 128-bit encryption. That seems like it might be why I'm unable to connect to the VPN?

My selinux policy was enforcing but I changed it to disable and allready rebooted. Update: At the moment after connecting by Ethernet cable to my home network the connection wold be established but no address would work to the remote network, I've disconnected the cable and resumed using my wifi connection and the VPN connection is working again!! I don't have a clue about what just happened.. since itś working I need to get some work done and will provide more info on this matter if I found something new.
OpenSUSE Network :: Can't Connect Via Pptp Vpn To Internet
Mar 15, 2010since installing opensuse 11.2 KDE, is that I can connect to the local resources when I'm not connected via the pptp vpn to the Internet but as soon as I establish an Internet connection, I cannot. Under Windows and other distros I've tried, this has never been an issue, usually I can connect to either local or Internet resources, interchangeably. In a nutshell, I don't know how to troubleshoot this.

I assume the failed read line is the culprit. I am currently running on a test machine. There is no firewall. I read on this error points to a firewall misconfiguration, but there isn't one.

Jan 7, 2011I have started a newly started a VPN-service with some friends and are offering both OpenVPN and PPTP-vpn.The OpenVPN works perfectly, but we have some problem with the PPTP.It is possible to connect to the VPN, but once connected you can't get any type of access to the outside world ( the interner ).I've googled (Ok, not I, but the tech-guy has) and havn't found any solution so therefor we try here.We are running Debian 5.0 on a XEN VPS.On the machines we've tested OpenVPN works like a charm.
