I upgraded my dedicated server using the do-release-upgrade command, and it seems to have installed many extra packages I do not require. This is a headless server in a datacentre, yet the upgrade caused me to install GUI packages I do not need. Is there a way to quickly remove all but the default server packages?

I upgraded from Maverick to the Natty beta a little while ago. It all worked fine for a couple of weeks. Then, this morning, I was unable to boot. I got to GRUB, picked the first option and it went to the Ubuntu 11.04 with the dots, then returned this:

I want to make a rescue disc for debian such that if anything goes wrong everything can be restored to its original condition. whatever extra packages are installed they should also be put back. most importantly zimbra and its dependencies.

Installed Debian Sqeeze onto my desktop using the same netinst cd. However, this time I had connected the desktop to my router during installation. Similary installed "Standard System".
Both system later installed with KDE and working fine. Noticed that immediate after installation of the "Standard System", my desktop had more files installed eg. the exim package. Why the extra packages (eg exim) are installed? Are they actually required?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded from 11.2 to 11.4 and the installation/upgrade worked just perfect. I than followed the instructions in the "New User How To/FAQ", "Multimedia and restricted format" post. I was following the instruction in the 11.4 section. I added the additional repositories as explained. I then was on the section where it talks about going into software management and selecting the "Packman" repository and clicking to "switch systems packages" to the versions in this repository (packman). I than click this link and the "warning" screen appears and I am present with conflict resolution after conflict resolution dialog. It just seems that there are some many conflicts, it just seems wrong and I canceled.
The installation/upgrade appears to have worked just fine. My mail is there, audio and dvd play back worked the first try after the upgrade. I am not clear if this is what I should expect or their is something wrong or if I even need to complete this step for a successfully installation.
I just upgraded to Maverick, and now I can't change my theme except for the cursor and window border/decoration.I've just reinstalled the themes I want to use (Dust + Dust extra) successfully, and while the window border/decorations change properly when I select them, nothing else changes. The icon set doesn't change;gnome-panel doesn't change. I'm stuck on the fugly fallback theme - the one you see when you do gksudo gedit or something.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a fresh Debian install, since this install was on a desktop, I had an internet connection and didn't notice (it was late, I was half asleep) I opted to download a whole load of packages I didn't really need. I thought all was doomed until I remembered that I have done another Debian install but a week ago on a laptop, which has a nice clean install without all the bloat.
So I ran dpkg --get-selections > selections
and had it sent to my new desktop installation.
Now if I run dpkg --set-selections < selections followed by dselect-upgrade nothing happens. I assume this is because the smaller list contains all the packages 'to be installed' which already are, and all the missing packages are not being purged. Do I need to explicitly add all the packages I want to purge to the 'selection' list or is there a better way of doing it?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've upgraded to Maverick but now I cannot get my wireless card working. In Lucid it didn't work out of the box, but worked perfectly by wrapping the Windows driver with ndiswrapper.
I noticed when I installed Maverick that wireless is enabled in Network-Manager and it gives me the option to create a wireless network or connect to a hidden network but it's not discovering/showing any of the wireless networks in range! So it seems as though the card is being recognized but the driver isn't working fully...? I tried wrapping the windows drivers, but that didn't change the situation at all.

I upgraded my laptop from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat). Upon rebooting after the upgrade I get a black screen. No login window, nothing. Just a black, empty void on my screen.My laptop has a Nvidia graphics card, and reading around on the internet I heard that there is a problem with Meerkat and Nvidia cards, something to do with the driver or some such thing.Is there a way to fix this?I'm wondering if it's possible to boot Ubuntu into a command line interface instead of X Windows, log in, and change the driver settings in xorg.conf? How would I go about booting into the command line? Is there a sequence of keys to press at boot time?

However, when I now run System -> About Ubuntu, I'm told I'm running Natty Narwhal 11.04, rather than Ubuntu 10.10 which I was aiming for. I never noticed this earlier, though... I guess it's a month or two since I upgraded.Did something go wrong in the update and cause this to happen by mistake?I there a way for me to downgrade to 10.10?

The commands
apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
are not the solution, because they install all distro packages, and I want only the base of desktops KDE and Gnome.
I can install LXDE with
apt-get install lxde
instead of
apt-get install lubuntu-desktop
I can install Xfce with
apt-get install xfce4
instead of
apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
However, I could not do the same with KDE and Gnome.
The upgrade finished, did a y to reboot and it boots to memtest, no sign of the grub screen at all.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just upgraded to Natty but since doing so the Wicd icon is missing. Everything is working ok, connection is as it should be but I would prefer to have the icon showing that I am connected to my network.
I have spent hours looking for a solution and tried several different remedies, none of which work.
I have been getting video error's in gnome-panel since I upgraded to Natty. It seems to become transparent on part of it, and my background covers it. I have tried deleting my gnome-panel preference's, to no aval. Does anybody know how to fix this?

this is on three separate laptops; an HP Pavilion 4120se, a Sony Vaio VGN-S5XP and a Dell Studio XPS1340. All are showing the same symptoms, though the first two are running 10.10 and the last is dual-boot Win7Pro and Natty 64-bit. All are UK models with a Region 2 restriction. The dual boot machine will run all legal movie DVDs perfectly under Windows 7 Professional. All three installations will run educational and similar DVDs. On all 3, Medibuntu repo is enabled, Ubuntu Restricted Extras are installed, as is libdvdcss2 and libdvdread4 (if those 2 can co-exist!). I'm using Movie Player and VLC.
I have tried UK retail commercial Region 2 movie DVDs, foreign region-free movie DVDs, Chinese pirate movie DVDs. None work. However, Licklibrary guitar instructional DVDs work fine - so the drives are OK! I've tried the oldest movie DVDs I have, and the same result. MP in Maverick tells me, "Could not read from resource" (VLC just does nothing!), and in Natty it says, "Could not read DVD. This may be because the DVD is encrypted and a DVD decryption library is not installed".
I have read as much as I can of the sticky above, and searched through every 'can't play DVDs' thread - hence the installation of all the above-mentioned software, codecs and libraries, all to no avail. Is it simply that the lack of commercial kick-backs from open-source software means Linux users will not be allowed to view movie content, or is there something fundamental I'm missing?
if there is a way of downloading some extra packages and including some extra repositories that will automatically install during the main installation? With the option of a few settings being saved too... like for those that are used to windows having the gnome menu on the bottom.
I am promoting and convincing a lot of people to try Linux and I always recommend fedora as the OS of choice. I have no interest in creating my own distro, because I love Fedora. I just want to make sure these users can have all the codecs and little extras that makes computing fun without being a geek.My main issue is when I wipe their HDD and install Fedora, I then have to repeat the same tweaks and installs every time. This is my 7th time doing the exact same install and am looking for a quicker way.

I have a couple of 64bit Maverick installs from the minimal CD.They each have about 1100 packages installed. When I started to upgrade one to Natty with the Upgrade Manager, it told me it wanted to install 205 new packages (along with upgrading 877).205 new packages seems like a lot of growth in the minimal install.Why do I need those 205 packages?Then I looked at the minimal CD page where I saw that the minimal CD itself (which has lists of packages not the packages) grew from 15.6 to 22MB.So, did the minimal install just bloat up with Natty or what? Is there an even-more-minimal install?

I have downloaded fedora 9 iso to my xp os so I can dual boot my machine. I can't seem to find a place to plug up my RJ-45 to download the extras package in an RPM or a tar file so that I can transfer it onto my linux os so I need a wireless site to download from.
