View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an 10.10 Maverick Ubuntu, and I've tried to update it to Natty version, but when I try it says to I check my connection with Internet and then close the update app, but my connection is fine, I think this could be something related to the host, since when I try to use sudo or play Frets on Fire it says that they "couldn't resolve the host".
View 2 Replies View Relatedthis is on three separate laptops; an HP Pavilion 4120se, a Sony Vaio VGN-S5XP and a Dell Studio XPS1340. All are showing the same symptoms, though the first two are running 10.10 and the last is dual-boot Win7Pro and Natty 64-bit. All are UK models with a Region 2 restriction. The dual boot machine will run all legal movie DVDs perfectly under Windows 7 Professional. All three installations will run educational and similar DVDs. On all 3, Medibuntu repo is enabled, Ubuntu Restricted Extras are installed, as is libdvdcss2 and libdvdread4 (if those 2 can co-exist!). I'm using Movie Player and VLC.
I have tried UK retail commercial Region 2 movie DVDs, foreign region-free movie DVDs, Chinese pirate movie DVDs. None work. However, Licklibrary guitar instructional DVDs work fine - so the drives are OK! I've tried the oldest movie DVDs I have, and the same result. MP in Maverick tells me, "Could not read from resource" (VLC just does nothing!), and in Natty it says, "Could not read DVD. This may be because the DVD is encrypted and a DVD decryption library is not installed".
I have read as much as I can of the sticky above, and searched through every 'can't play DVDs' thread - hence the installation of all the above-mentioned software, codecs and libraries, all to no avail. Is it simply that the lack of commercial kick-backs from open-source software means Linux users will not be allowed to view movie content, or is there something fundamental I'm missing?
I have Ubuntu 10.04 with Gnome. Whenever I put in a blank CD/DVD an icon on the desktop appears named "Blank CD/DVD" and a window appears asking me what I want to do with it. How do I disable the window and the icon from the desktop?

I have a couple of 64bit Maverick installs from the minimal CD.They each have about 1100 packages installed. When I started to upgrade one to Natty with the Upgrade Manager, it told me it wanted to install 205 new packages (along with upgrading 877).205 new packages seems like a lot of growth in the minimal install.Why do I need those 205 packages?Then I looked at the minimal CD page where I saw that the minimal CD itself (which has lists of packages not the packages) grew from 15.6 to 22MB.So, did the minimal install just bloat up with Natty or what? Is there an even-more-minimal install?

I upgraded my dedicated server using the do-release-upgrade command, and it seems to have installed many extra packages I do not require. This is a headless server in a datacentre, yet the upgrade caused me to install GUI packages I do not need. Is there a way to quickly remove all but the default server packages?
View 1 Replies View RelatedNo matter how many times I press the mute button on my laptop, when I turn it on I get the drums, and when I login I get the music -- at least 2 seconds of it before the mute button will respond. This is not great for turning on the laptop in a quiet lecture hall! I googled for some solutions to this problem, and none of the suggested pathways seem to work with Maverick: System>Preferences>Sound no longer has the option to choose the login sound "System>Administration>Login Screen" has a checkbox labeled "Play login sound," but I have it unchecked and the login sound plays regardless. Is there any way to turn off the login sound in Maverick so I can turn on my computer in peace?

My question is, can I still get updates for Maverick without being prompted for upgrade to Natty? Also I would like to remove the button from Update Manager. Is there a simple way to do that?
I just upgraded machine to natty, after which the xmodmap configuration remapping capslock stopped working (as in not doing anything at all). Running xmodmap manually (-e "clear Lock") doesn't have any visible effect either. I haven't tried doing this on another machine (I'm only close to one machine running ubuntu and reinstalling seems rather overkill), but the same config worked before the upgrade, and is working on another machine running arch.
Is anyone else having these issues and, if so, has anybody found a solution? The line of interest is, simply, "clear Lock".
Update Manager is inviting me to update from my Maverick Meerkat to Natty. Is this a good idea?

In Debian, there are several tools with similar functionality, but users coming from other Linux distributions will find the tools in this package more familiar.
Go to Terminal and open it and type the command "chkconfig' press enter. code...
after installing just type "chkconfig"
you can see list of service which one is off or on in your system code...
Today I upgraded my Lucid to Maverick. After upgrading, from "update-manager -d", I tried a couple of new programs (games, actually) and re-enabled the third party repositories. I don't have exotic things, just google chrome, transmission beta, and some more of this sort. After rebooting, the system enters in terminal instead of the regular gui. I tried to search online for possible solutions, but none worked. I tried
(1) startx
output: fatal server error, no screen found.
(2) sudo service gdm stop; sudo service gdm start
Output: gdm start/running process 1265
(3) removing the option nomodeset from the boot. To do this I edited /etc/default/grub, the line with the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX and ran grub-mkconfig. After a reboot, the computer returned to the terminal.
(4) some even suggested removing /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but I don't have that file...
I have an acer timeline with initial hardware. I don't know which graphics card it has, if any... I really need to get my computer running, and I was looking for suggestions before reinstalling 10.04.
For testing purposes, I'd like to disable windows decoration on my desktop. However, I don't know how to do such a thing, I can't find a parameter for gtk-window-decorator nor emerald that can disable them. I have also tried disabling window decoration in compiz settings but after disabling the check mark for windows decoration it is automatically marked again after a couple of seconds

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am still booting from my Ubuntu Lucid Lynx, and I want to upgrade to 10.04 Maverick Meerkat without losing any of the files, and work I have done so far. I have discussed this with a friend, and he has informed me that I can do this by going to the upgrade manager in the ADMINISTRATION menu under SYSTEM. He told me all I had to do was click install, and it would install all of the packages for me, and automatically upgrade everything to 10.10 without any loss of files and information. Is this true? Also currently I am dual booting from Windows XP, and Lucid Lynx. I have a 32 bit processor, Intel Dual Core.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded my old laptop to Maverick, and something went wrong. The update process crashed near the end. I had to kill the window. Tried to do a dist-upgrade but nothing happened, so I rebooted. After the reboot, I got a black screen, showing "Disconnected from Plymouth", and a login prompt. But the keyboard is disabled, so I can't even log in. If I try the recovery mode, I get a menu with options to get to a command line, but the keyboard is still disabled (only Ctrl-Alt-Del works).I already had a similar error in Lucid: the black screen with the Plymouth error showed up, but after a few seconds X started anyway and everything went fine. Now I'm stuck.

I have talked to other people, and they say to wait about a month until after the release to fix all bugs and stuff. Is this a good Idea? Or should I update now and just get it over with?

I suspect that this has something to do with the fact that I haven't been able to install a number of updates for a while (I receive the Partial Upgrade error message). Is there any other safe way to upgrade that can bypass this problem?
