Ubuntu :: Removed Video Card To Switch To Onboard Video / Cannot Start Kdm

Jun 19, 2011

Got a bit of a problem where xorg can't start kdm. I pulled out a dying AGP card to try and switch to onboard video, and I think the previous configuration is gumming up the works.I've been running this system for quite a while, as you'll be able to tell from the version numbers.Would like to avoid having to transport my Amarok databases to a new server. I make heavy use of the song ratings and whenever I try to transport the database from the old system to a fresh build I have to spend hours relearning sql commands.Any ideas how to either fix the resolutions on the ATI or (preferably) get KDE to start on the onboard graphics?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Onboard HDMI And A Video Card At Same Time?

Jul 26, 2010

I'm looking at upgrading my motherboard and graphics card. Ideally, I'd like to have 2 monitors running at once (DVI), and an output to an LCD projector (HDMI). If I can't have all 3 working at once, I'd like the 2 monitors on all the time (off the graphics card), and then switch from the monitors to the HDMI output so that only the projector is getting video.

So, If I get a motherboard with onboard HDMI, would it be possible to run the HDMI out at the same time as the graphics card output?

Fedora Hardware :: Dual Video Cards - ATI PCI & Via Onboard ?

Oct 17, 2010

I am a bit overwhelmed with all the information out here, and can't get this to work properly after trying to for two days. I have a PCI ATI card(Sapphire Radeon 9250):

00:08.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] (rev 01)
00:08.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] (Secondary) (rev 01)

of which I am only wanting to use the Primary, and my onboard video:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. KM400/KN400/P4M800 [S3 UniChrome] (rev 01)

right now my xorg.conf is empty and I only get a display off my ATI card. How can I get my onboard to display as well like it does in windows?

I've tried many ways that I found and nothing seems to work.

Ubuntu Installation :: Configure Onboard Video - Gigabyte 890GPA-UD3H ?

Jan 28, 2011

I just replaced my motherboard with a Gigabyte 890GPA-UD3H. I am happy to report that the OS (Ubuntu 10.04) was smart enough to boot up using the pre-existing software RAID 5 (four disks) and work fine with the new motherboard, CPU, and memory. However, since the new motherboard has a nice onboard display, I removed the PCIe graphics card (which was needed on the old board), and am now trying to configure the OS to use the "OnChipVGA."

This is what lshw produces

And here is what I get with startx:X.Org X Server 1.7.6

Ubuntu :: Onboard Nic Plug Broken Pci Nic Inserted Need 2 Remove Onboard

I just built a computer and the onboard nic pluggin is loose and won't register or connect right... so I had to put another nic card in pci to connect to wired network for internet. Problem now is its delaying something fierce... i'm thinking if i can manage to uninstall or disable the onboard nic maybe things would work better... problem is i wouldn't know how to do it... I know hardware is connected via a document somewhere in the file system... if I were to delete the file would that disable the nic or would it just reinstall itself on the next boot?

Hardware :: Keyboard Failure And Updating BIOS?

May 12, 2010

I am using a Dell dimension 4550 with pentium 4 processor. My current BOIS is A01. I am running Slackware 13. My current problem is that whenever I reboot, the keyboard fails just before the kernel selection page. This isn't a huge problem because I only have one kernel to boot but it is quite annoying. Whenever I shutdown the computer and boot it up again the keyboard works fine. The problem only occurs when I reboot. How do I fix this? Would updating the BIOS solve the problem?

Ubuntu :: Getting X To Work After Switching From Onboard Intel Video To A 5000 Series ATI Card?

Apr 25, 2010

I'm having trouble getting X to work after switching from onboard intel video to a 5000 series ATI card. Apparently I need to switch to a MESA or fglrx driver. I did a sudo apt-get install fglrx-driver and it installed but still no X. I'm currently using Karmic. I've tried to boot with a live CD which works fine and changed the xorg file manual but that was a mess.

When I start I get a checking battery state ... done and it stays there forever sometimes and sometimes I can login but without x. Typing startx gives me a long list that says check the xorg website. I've been looking around for a way to fix this and haven't been able to get it working.

OpenSUSE Install :: Sudden Failure Of BIOS To Detect New Harddisk?

Feb 5, 2010

I have problems with my acer aspire M1201. I have added a 2GB RAM beside the 1GB stock RAM. Currently I have reformatted my stock Hitachi HDD 160GB and I have added another HDD in which it is a Samsung 500GB HDD SATA drive. I have successfully installed GNU/Linux Opensuse 11.2 OS in the new harddrive (Samsung). Besides all that, the other specifications are all stock. After 2 days of successful runs in the new OS and no problems at all, the OS hangs and fails to boot and displays this, Error 18 : Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS. I should mention also that while setting screensaver, when I chose OpenGL, the OS hangs and i have to hard-reset my pc. I suspect that the current BIOS version which is R03-B1 and product name ACRA8000-S03-990610-R03-B1 needed update due to new hardware. But currently there is no new downloads in Acer's website regarding my BIOS version. What should I do to run my Linux successfully? I should also mention that I haven't logged to the internet due to unsuccessful dialer which i have consulted my internet service provider and yet to rectify.

Ubuntu :: Use The External Drive To Plug Into Any Machine And Run By Just Changing The Needed Bios Mods In That System

Jun 17, 2011

I was just thinking about installing an operating system like ubuntu or ubuntu server on an external harddrive. this being possible , i would like to know if we can use the external drive to plug into any machine and run my ubuntu by just changing the needed bios mods in that system. and without further having to install the necessary hardware specific devices into my os.

Because each machine would have its own hardware set, how would the os handle it or would it have to install the necessary drivers and so on everytime it comes across a different system from the immediate previous hardware it was used with. and i know this was why laptops were invented even maybe to have that portability to use with but this without a laptop, just an external hard drive that can make up and help us use the hardware at hand with ease without any installations of any kind.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Video Failure On Startup 9.1

Jan 24, 2010

About 1 hour after successfully installing 9.10, the window elements started flickering and were inaccessible. I was working on intalling dimdim, but I did not touch any system files around the time the failure occurred. Thereafter, any regular login attempt results in a flickering black box on top of the new dim-gray-light ubuntu login window. The machine needs to be rebooted to get out of this mode. System restore mode works perfectly. startx starts the x environment, but with the flickering and uselnessness. The machine is a dual bood Ubuntu/Vista box (yeah, I know, Vista came with it). It is an intel quad core 2.33 MHz processor. The video is a cheapo on-board type. I have included system stats at the end of this message.

General :: Ubuntu: Failure To Login With Multiple Video Adapters?

May 10, 2010

I have a computer with three video cards and six monitors. Works great on Windows. Trying to get it to run Ubuntu 10.4 as well. It loads fine when I have it configured to run on one adapter; detects both screens, runs ok. But I want to turn the other 4 monitors on and run the whole thing as one extended desktop (one session, etc). So I downloaded and installed the newest ATI driver for Linux, which seems to work, kinda. I ran this to set up the screens:

aticonfig --adapter=all --initial -f Now when I boot, Ubuntu seems to turn on all the screens (3 viewports, each with two cloned displays from what I can tell). When I enter my login info OR move the mouse off the main screen, the screens freeze and the kbd/ms become unresponsive.
